Topic Career (Топик Карьера)

«What to be» is the most important question young people ask themselves. Your destiny and family relationship depend on it. Many aspects of life should be taken into consideration while answering the question «what to be». Different circumstances can influence our choice, we may follow someone’s experience or advice or be encouraged by certain people and events.

At early years of mankind development there were just a few jobs such as farmers, bakers, butchers or carpenters. In 17-th century I Russia it was about 200 professions. Now days exists 40000 varieties of jobs, but new kinds of work appears all the time. There is no doubt  that it’s difficult to chose correct. We have so many professions to choose of. Challenging, rewarding, exciting, prestigious, professions seem to be attractive. If a job is monotonous, exhausting, messy you will say it doesn’t appeal to you. We divide jobs into caring, creative, outdoor, office professions and forces.

We refer nursing, teaching to caring professions. Creative professions include the job of a journalist, designer. To work in the office means to be a bank worker, a secretary, a receptionist. If you work in agriculture, horticulture, conservation you are a representative of the outdoor profession. Those who work in the police, army or navy choose forces. Besides these professions you may make a career in law, finance, international business relations, tourism business, banking and others.

Making the right choice can be rather frustrating. You should know your strengths and weaknesses. You must keep in mind what different jobs can require. Some jobs need accuracy, good imagination, physical strength. Others will require experience, special training, travelling a lot, working long hours from home, working late or even working night shifts.

I wish we had a special subject in career teaching at school. If only there were visits to places of employment and higher education. At the lessons of career teaching we could investigate our good and bad points, our interests and aptitudes, we could relate our knowledge and values to our ambitions and requirements of different occupations. Such lessons would clarify relationship between education and employment.

It is important to realize that if you are practical and organized, like routine that doesn’t vary, have a tidy mind then you are suited for an office profession. Creative nature, imaginative mind, sociability and ability to communicate will enable you to be a designer, a tourist agent, an interpreter or a market researcher. Artistic and loving nature, imagination, sensitivity make the occupation of a painter, actor, dancer, florist, architect, beautician suitable for you. Working as a teacher Teacher’s demands love for children, perfect experience in subject, and the power of explanation. In matters of future career the priority should be given to education. If you are conscientious, efficient, capable of doing accurate work, responsible — your prospects of getting a good job increase.

Since I was a child I wished to be a programmer. I was interested in working with numbers, bites, structures and finding answers for complex problems. I love Mathematics and I am very good at it. As for my personality, I may say that I am constructive and persistent, I have strong logic, easily solve problems and I prefer teamwork rather than independence. To find a job I like I need to have excellent science knowledge’s so I could pass examinations to institute.

And there is another thing to keep in mind, it’s creation of correct impression on people, especially, when you apply for a good position. Your possible in the future employer will search for your Curriculum Vitae. It’s info about your previous experiences, education and personal qualities. Then he will decide whether to invite you or not for an interview. The way you look, your confidence, correct speech and behavior and knowledge of subject will make good impression on the interviewer.

TASK 3

You are going to give a talk about your career plans. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.
Remember to say:
  • what job you want to do in the future;
  • what two subjects you think are the most important for your future job, and why;
  • whether your family approve of your career choice or not
  • what your attitude to building a career is
You have to talk continuously.

I’m going to give a talk about my career plans.

First of all, I would like to say that it’s rather difficult to decide what to do in your life when you are only 16 years old. I haven’t decided and I haven’t chosen my future job yet. I’m thinking about a career of a doctor/journalist/IT specialist. I’m still not sure.

To be a doctor I need to learn Chemistry and Biology. (To be a journalist I need Russian and Literature. To be IT specialist I need Mathematics and Computer science). These subjects are the base of the job I’m thinking about as a career of my life. Also to get to the university I’ll have exams and these subjects will definitely be in the list of compulsory subjects.

My parents give me a chance to decide what to do in the future by myself. When a told them about my plans to become a doctor/journalist/IT specialist, they approved it. They think that it is a useful job which is also rather well paid. Moreover, my uncle is a successful doctor/journalist/IT specialist, he is my role model and I’m sure that he likes my choice too.

I definitely want to be successful at work so my attitude to building a career is positive.

I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about my career plans.

1.

Jobs of the future
You are now choosing your future career and are considering what jobs are high in demand
in the modern world. But actually you will start working full time in several years only so
why not think about what jobs will be necessary then? In our world, which is rapidly
changing, several years means a long time really. There will be more IT specialists in all
spheres, especially in medicine. There will be genetic engineering affordable for all people.
More and more things are done online nowadays so there will be people who regulate our
life in the Internet like Internet lawyers, for instance. There will probably be eco
psychologists – psychologists for animals and plants. More and more professions will be
inevitably connected with exploring the outer space as well. So before making your final
decision, try to look into the future of our planet and you will probably choose a job which
will be popular in ten years’ time.

The first human carrying flight technology was the hot air balloon. While unmanned balloons have been around in some form for thousands of years, the first flight with people aboard was in 1782. The large balloon on top is called an “envelope”. It holds hot air created by a heat source known a burner. The burner creates an open flame by burning a mix of propane and air. Hot air balloons are capable of floating because the hot air inside the envelope has a lower density than the colder air outside. The top of the balloon usually has a vent which allows the pilot to control the speed of ascent or descent. Passengers typically stand in a basket beneath the envelope. While most envelopes have a standard balloon shape, others are designed to look like animals, cartoon characters and other fun objects.

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Because swamps were considered unpleasant places in which to live and harmful to health, many people thought that unless they were drained the land was worthless.

Other swamps were drained to make new land. As the population grew and more land was needed, people drained swamps or filled them to make room for more farms and factories, more roads and airports.

Few people thought that it might be harmful to get rid of swamps. As swamps disappeared, other things happened. There were both more floods and more droughts than before. There were also more fires, for swamps had acted as firebreaks. Hunters noticed that there was less wild game. Wild life that once lived in the swamps was dying out, because it had no place to live.

People have always told stories and legends to explain natural, but mysterious, occurrences such as the Northern Lights. The Vikings believed the Northern Lights were caused by the shining weapons of warriors. The Alaskan people thought the lights were the souls of salmon, deer and other animals. The Indians told the stories of giants living in the North and thought the lights were their torches.

The Northern Lights are actually caused by electrons from solar winds. They are attracted to the poles by the magnetic fields found there. They mix with gases in the atmosphere, which causes the gases to glow. The Northern Lights are most visible in the far north. They are typically green, purple, red or blue.

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands in addition to numerous smaller islands. Tokyo is the country’s capital and largest city. Mountains dominate Japan’s landscape, covering 75 to 80 per cent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese have long celebrated the beauty of their mountains in art and literature, and today many mountain areas are preserved in national parks. Most of Japan’s people live on plains and lowlands found mainly along the lower courses of the country’s major rivers, on the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and along the sea coast. This concentration of people makes Japan one of the world’s most crowded countries.

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

Since ancient times, humans have loved and cherished cats as their pets. Today more than 80 million cats reside in US homes, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. Yet there is still a lot we don’t know about our feline friends – including what they think of their owners. After observing pet cats for several years, scientists have come to an intriguing conclusion: cats don’t really understand people the way dogs do. They tend to feel it is they who own their masters, not vice versa. On the contrary, dogs perceive people as being very different from themselves. As soon as they see a human, they change their behaviour. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from the way it plays with a dog. Cats are independent creatures and they can easily change their owner without changing their habits.

Task 2. Study the advertisement. You are considering going on a bus tour and now you’d like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask four direct questions to find out about the following:

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Task 4. Imagine that you are doing a project “Best Places to Live for a Teenager” together with your friend. You have found some illustrations and want to share the news. Leave a voice message to your friend. In 2.5 minutes be ready to tell the friend about the photos:

• give a brief description of the photos, justifying the choice of the photos for the project ;

• express your opinion on the subject of the project – which place for living you would prefer and why.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (2-3 sentences for each item of the plan, 12–15 sentences total). You have to talk continuously.

Hi, Masha. I’ve found two photos and I`d like to discuss them with you

1) Give a brief description of the photos

In the first picture we can see two people, a man and a woman, driving through a cornfield in a mini tractor. They must be farmers collecting the harvest they have grown.

In the second picture there is a young man going along the street of a big city. He is having a camera in his hands. He seems to be looking through the photos he has just taken.

2) Say in what why the pictures are different

There are important differences between these pictures.

Firstly (the first obvious difference is that) the people on the left are in the countryside, whereas the man on the right is in urban area. Secondly, while the couple in the first picture is enjoying their work in the piece and quite of nature, the man in the second picture is surrounded by lots of people hurrying about their business. The atmosphere of this busy street seems to be noisy.

3) Mention the advantages and disadvantages

Of living in a city and in a village

I think that both places for living shown in the pictures have their advantages and disadvantages. Urban residents, for example, have more opportunities for entrainment and education as a great number of universities, theatres, cinemas and museums are located in big cities.

But on the other hand, people living in big cities may suffer from lack of oxygen to breath and constant noise and pollution. As for rural dwellers, they seem to have a better way of living as they can enjoy fresh air, lots of greenery and pure nature around them. On the downside, rural residents,

Especially teenagers may feel bored and isolated as they don’t have so many opportunities to for entrainment as their peers in a city have.

4) Explain how these photos illustrate the project

These photos work really well for out project as they show that although living in the countryside is good for physical and mental health of the youth, they are deprived of many opportunities compared to urban residents.

5) Express your opinion on the subject

Personally, I would not like to live in the countryside because I’m found of hustle and bustle of a big city. Also, I like to have everything close at hand. I think I would get bored living in a rural area as there would be nothing for me to do there.

(What did you like …when you were a child? Would you like to… in ten years?).

Skyeng

ege 2022 speaking 2 skyteach

• give a brief description of the photos, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;
• say in what way the pictures are different, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;
• mention the advantages and disadvantages (1–2) of _____;
• express your opinion on the subject of the project—whether you would like to ____ and why.

Выразить свое мнение по теме проекта, и ответить на вопрос whether you would like to… and why.

Antarctica is the driest place on Earth. Parts of the continent have seen no rain for two million years. A desert is technically defined as a place that receives less than 10 inches of rain a year. The Sahara gets just 1 inch of rain a year.
As well as the driest place on Earth, Antarctica can also claim to be the wettest and the windiest. Seventy percent of the world’s fresh water is found there in the form of ice, and its wind speeds are the fastest ever recorded. The unique conditions in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica are caused by so-called katabatic winds. These occur when cold, dense air is pulled downhill simply by the force of gravity. Though Antarctica is a desert, these completely dry parts of it are called, somewhat ironically, oases. They are so similar to conditions on Mars that NASA used them to test the Viking mission.

1.You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.
How many days a week do you go to school?
I go to school 6 days a week, Sunday is a day off and the school doesn’t work. When we have public holidays I also don’t go to school.
What subjects are you good at?
In general I am successful in many subjects such as history, social study, literature and others but to be honest I am especially good at English. I have an aptitude for remembering new words quickly and use them in a right way while speaking English.

Questions (task 2)

Task 4. Imagine that you are doing a project “Best Places to Live for a Teenager” together with your friend. You have found some illustrations and want to share the news. Leave a voice message to your friend. In 2.5 minutes be ready to tell the friend about the photos:

• mention the advantages and disadvantages (1-2) of the two places for living;
