For many years, if you wanted to apply for Access Scholarship, you had to plan well ahead ‘cos the deadline expired in mid-September of the year before the exam you wished to take, e.g. 15 Sept 2020 was the deadline for all 2021 CFA exams.
However, it seems that CFA Institute wants to change that. In the current CFAI. Access Scholarship program year that starts on 1 September 2022 and ends on 31 August 2023, there will be 2 application windows that will be quite short but they will be nearer to your CFA exam, which will make it easier for you to plan your CFA exam. If you are awarded the Access Scholarship, you’ll get around 7 months to use it for one of the available CFA exams (mind, however, the timeframe and exact expiration date provided by CFA Institute in the scholarship award e-mail!).
The first Access Scholarship application window for 2023 CFA exams opens on 20 September 2022 and closes at midnight ET on 18 October 2022. The second application window starts on 17 January 2023 and ends on 14 February 2023. There are also other CFA Institute scholarships such as Women’s Scholarships or Student Scholarships. In the scholarship program year that starts on 1 September 2022 and ends on 31 August 2023, 2 application windows for women are available. The first one was closed in October 2022 and the other one opens in January 2023. If you’re a student, check with your school whether you can apply. And if you’re a woman, with the 2 application windows available per year, it should be more easy for you to get your scholarship. If you want to apply for a dedicated scholarship, visit your CFA Institute account to check for details.

The early registration fee for 2023 CFA exams increases to USD 900 (from USD 700). The standard registration fee is also up to USD 1200 (instead of USD 1000).
Note that as of 2023 newcomers to the CFA Program have to pay a one-time program enrolment fee of USD 350. The amount is the same regardless of the CFA exam registration deadline you choose.

The registration for the CFA exam is a 2-step process: first you register for your exam and pay the registration fee, then you must schedule your exam day within your chosen exam window. Appointments are made on the first-come, first-served basis.
You may also re-schedule your CFA exam before the rescheduling deadline if you pay the rescheduling fee of USD 250 (for each reschedule!). The rescheduling option enables you to alter your exam day or test center location within your exam window. The change is possible based on seating availability. If there is no free spot at a given time – you should check regularly for seating availability. Mind, though, that for 2023 exams every actual rescheduling costs USD 250. Moreover, be sure to get familiar with test center information (options may vary from center to center, e.g. the length of the exam window may differ).

As of 2021, for all CFA exams there’s computer-based testing. Exams are composed of two sessions with an optional break in between. Each exam session lasts approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes.
For LEVEL 1 CFA exam, you can expect 90 multiple-choice questions per session. That makes it a total of 180 questions. You’ll have 1.5 minutes per question on average.
For LEVEL 2 CFA exam, you can expect 44 multiple-choice questions per session, arranged into 11 item sets (each topped by a vignette followed by 4 multiple-choice questions). That makes it a total of 88 questions (22 item sets). You’ll have ca. 3 minutes per question on average.
For LEVEL 3 CFA exam, you can expect both open-ended (constructed response) questions and item sets (like for level 2). Altogether, there will be 11 constructed response (essay) sets with a variable number of items/questions to be answered and 44 multiple-choice questions arranged into 11 item sets with 4 questions each. In both sessions, you’ll have a mix of essay questions and item sets (example given in the table below). For both essay and item sets, the total number of points possible to score will be stated (for each item set, it’s ca. 3 minutes per question on average, time for essays can vary).

CFA Exam Schedule: A Regular Cadence for CFA Exam Dates and Schedules
In 2023, the CFA Institute will offer the CFA exam on a regular schedule. Level I will be offered four times a year in February, May, August, and November 2023. Level II will be offered three times a year in May, August/September, and November 2023. Level III of the CFA exam will be offered twice a year in February and August/September 2023.

How Much Does the CFA Exam Cost?
CFA exam costs vary depending on when you decide to register for the exam but regardless there is a one-time enrollment fee of $350 the first time you register for the Level I exam.
How To Register for the CFA Exam in 2023
The CFA exam is administered to registrants in a computer-based testing format for three levels, which ended 60 years of paper-based testing for Level ll and Level lll. To register for the CFA exam, you must first register with the CFA Institute;
then you will be given the option to schedule your exam during one of the dates provided by the CFA Institute.

What to Bring to the CFA Exam in 2023

Bring these materials to your CFA Exam:
- A valid international passport: this is the only type of identification that will be accepted for admission
- Your CFA Exam Admission Ticket: the CFA Institute will alert you when your ticket is available, at which point you should print it on clean paper
- An approved calculator: the TI BAII Plus or the Hewlett Packard 12C
- Tip: bring extra batteries and a backup calculator, if you have one
- Pencils: multiple sharpened #2 pencils
- High-quality erasers
- Pencil sharpener
- A sweater or jacket in case you get cold in your testing room
- A wristwatch to make timing as simple as possible
- FYI: Smartwatches are not allowed!

Staying up-to-date on any changes made by the CFAI (Chartered Financial Analyst Institute), such as when and where the exam will be offered, is an important step in developing a study schedule for the CFA® exam. Knowing the dates is also beneficial because the costs change depending on when you register; if you register early, you get a discounted price, and if you register late, the regular fee is slightly more.
CFA Exam Schedule
Much like in 2022, the CFA exam will be administered four times for Level 1, three times for Level 2, and twice for Level 3, for the 2023 exam windows as well. This change in the the exam schedule by the CFAI was done to speed up the release of Level 3 results, which usually takes longer than the other two levels.

For the 2023 exam windows, the CFA Level 1 exam will be held four times: in February, May, August, and November.

How to Schedule, Defer and Reschedule Your CFA Exam?
To sit for the CFA exam, you must meet the following criteria:
- Have a bachelor’s degree or be in the final year of pursuing one
- Have four years of related work experience
- Have at least four years of education and work experience
Once you’ve completed the following CFA Exam requirements, you are now ready to schedule your exam.
Scheduling the Exam
Scheduling the CFA exam is a two-step process—«register and pay» and «scheduling the exam.» You can register and pay for the exam via the CFA Institute’s website and then «schedule your exam» using the link in your registration dashboard.
Prometric’s scheduling tool, provided by the Prometric Testing Centers, can help you choose the testing center, dates, and time-slots that work best for you. Following your scheduling, you’ll receive an email from Prometric confirming your exam day and time. Unless you receive a confirmation email, your appointment has not been set. In this case, you should contact Prometric immediately.
Even though Prometric will assist you completely in scheduling the exam, the CFAI website will continue to serve as your go-to source for the most current CFA exam information.
If you can’t find a Prometric testing center in your preferred area, keep checking again as seats are frequently added. Use the city and country filters when searching for testing locations. There are far more Prometric testing centers available when you search using these factors than by nation.
Deferring the Exam Date
Candidates may only defer their CFA exam on a case-by-case basis. Deferment considerations are based on the following events that affect the candidate or a member of the candidate’s immediate family:
- A travel restriction imposed by the government, employer, or university due to COVID-19 that prevents a candidate from taking the exam (documentation required)
- A positive COVID test within 60 days of the scheduled exam appointment for the candidate (documentation required).
- A candidate or immediate family member with a life-threatening illness in the exam window
- A candidate’s immediate family member’s death
- Military service (candidate only) during the exam window
- Pregnancy (candidate only).
- Natural disaster (in the candidate’s area)
You must provide documentation to back up your claim for a free emergency deferral. The approval and processing time for a deferral can take up to six weeks. When your account has been updated, the CFAI will notify you via email so that you can register for your next exam.
Candidates experiencing a non-life-threatening qualifying pandemic-related illness/issue are eligible for reduced registration fee deferrals. This option lowers your next registration fee to $399. If your situation does not fit within these parameters, you may
withdraw your exam registration.
Canceling the exam
The CFAI allows candidates to withdraw or cancel their exam registration until five days before the beginning of their exam window. Unfortunately, if you withdraw or cancel your exam, you will not receive a refund for the enrollment and registration fees. These fees will also not be deferred or transferred to another CFA exam.
Furthermore, if you do not withdraw your registration five days before the start of the exam window, you will be unable to re-register for the next exam until the current exam results are released.
How to Be Prepared for Exam Day?
The computer-based CFA exams are administered at over 400 Prometric testing centers worldwide. After you register, you will be given a list of seating options and test centers to choose from. Following the seat assignment, you will also be notified about lunch, parking, and other details to help plan your day effectively.

How do the CFA exam registration fees vary across deadlines?
Things have gotten simpler since CFA Institute’s recent announcement on changes in exam frequency and a switch to computer-based testing for all Levels.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the CFA Program admissions process or entry requirements?
CFA Institute recently updated the entry requirements in Nov 2022.
In short, you must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) have a Bachelor’s degree, OR
(b) your chosen CFA Level 1 exam window is at most 2 years before your graduation month of an undergraduate degree, OR
(c) have at least 4,000 hours of work experience and/or higher education that was acquired over a minimum of 3 consecutive years. Note that the professional work experience requirement for enrollment doesn’t require involvement in investment decision making process, unlike for CFA charterholders.

How do I enroll and register for the CFA Program?
Once you’ve checked that you meet the enrollment criteria of the CFA program (see previous question), you can register for the CFA program by creating an account to start your studies.
What’s this first time enrolment fee?
This is the fee that’s only applicable if you’re new to the CFA Program.
If this is your first time registering for a CFA exam ever, then you’ll have to pay this fee once, otherwise you don’t.
Do I get print curriculum books with my registration?
No.
Your registration fee includes the e-version of the curriculum, plus practice tests and mock exams.
If you’d like your own print curriculum, you’ll be able to buy it during the registration checkout process for USD 150 + shipping. You can also buy it post-registration if you like.
