The advice of American doctors is all about
1) ways to reduce negative effect of modern technologies.
2) complex measures that ensure healthy sleep.
3) positive effect of herbal therapy.
4) the process of restoring from unexpected psychological stress
A good night’s sleep — an impossible dream?
Tonight, do yourself a favor. Shut off the TV, log off the
Internet and unplug the phone. Relax, take a bath, maybe sip some herbal tea.
Then move into the bedroom. Set your alarm clock for a time no less than eight
hours in the future, fluff up your pillows and lay your head down for a
peaceful night of restorative shut-eye. That’s what American doctors advise.
American sleep experts are sounding an alarm over America’s sleep
deficit. They say Americans are a somnambulant nation, stumbling groggily
through their waking hours for lack of sufficient sleep. They are working
longer days — and, increasingly, nights — and they are playing longer, too, as
TV and the Internet expand the range of round-the-clock entertainment options.
By some estimates, Americans are sleeping as much as an hour and a half less
per night than they did at the turn of the century — and the problem is likely
to get worse.
The health repercussions of sleep deprivation are not well
understood, but sleep researchers point to ills ranging from heart problems to
depression. In a famous experiment conducted at the University of Chicago in
1988, rats kept from sleeping died after two and a half weeks. People are not
likely to drop dead in the same way, but sleep deprivation may cost them their
lives indirectly, when an exhausted doctor prescribes the wrong dosage or a
sleepy driver weaves into someone’s lane.
What irritates sleep experts most is the fact that much sleep
deprivation is voluntary. “People have regarded sleep as a commodity that they
could shortchange,” says one of them. “It’s been considered a mark of very hard
work and upward mobility to get very little sleep. It’s a macho attitude”.
Slumber scientists hope that attitude will change. They say people have learned
to modify their behavior in terms of lowering their cholesterol and increasing
exercise. Doctors also think people need to be educated that
allowing enough time for sleep and taking strategic naps are the
most reliable ways to promote alertness behind the wheel and on the job.
Well, naps would be nice, but at the moment, employers tend to
frown on them. And what about the increasing numbers of people who work at
night? Not only must they work while their bodies’ light-activated circadian
rhythms tell them to sleep, they also find it tough to get to sleep after work.
Biologists say night workers have a hard time not paying attention to the 9-to-5
day because of noises or family obligations or that’s the only time they can go
to the dentist. There are not too many dentists open at midnight.
As one might imagine, companies are springing up to take advantage
of sleeplessness. One of the companies makes specially designed shift-work
lighting systems intended to keep workers alert around the clock. Shiftwork’s
theory is that bright light, delivered in a controlled fashion, can help adjust
people’s biological clocks. The company president says they are using light
like a medicine. So far, such special lighting has been the province of NASA
astronauts and nuclear power plant workers. He thinks that in the future, such
systems may pop up in places like hospitals and 24-hour credit-card processing
centers. Other researchers are experimenting with everything from welder’s
goggles (which night workers wear during the day) to human growth hormones.
And, of course, there is always what doctors refer to as “therapeutic caffeine
use”, but everyone is already familiar with that.
So, is a good night’s sleep an impossible dream for Americans?
Maybe so.
13. Задание
Americans are referred to as a “somnambulant nation” because they
1) need special help to fall asleep.
2) are sleepwalkers.
3) regularly wake up at night.
4) don’t get enough sleep to function effectively.
14. Задание
Experiments with sleep deprivation proved that
1) it inevitably leads to death.
2) its repercussions have finally become predictable.
3) it is likely to result in cardio or nervous problems.
4) animal and human reactions are almost alike.
15. Задание
There is a tendency to sleep less because
1) people want to look tough at any cost.
2) people think they can reduce sleeping hours without any harm.
3) people have learned to cope with less sleep just as they have
learned to lower cholesterol.
4) otherwise they lose career and social opportunities.
16. Задание
Having naps during the day would be nice, but
1) doctors do not find them effective.
2) people won’t take them voluntarily.
3) bosses are against this.
4) it is difficult to arrange.
17. Задание
People who work at night can hardly
1) fulfill traditional family obligations.
2) consult doctors when needed.
3) socialize to their liking.
4) ever sleep without ear-plugs.
18. Задание
The main aim of specially designed shift-work lighting system is
1) to help people feel alert at night.
2) to provide better lightning.
3) to prevent heart diseases.
4) to stimulate human growth hormones.

Fashion is becoming hotly discussed problem nowadays. I can say without doubts that there’re more and more people who spend huge sums of money on clothes. The first reason for this is probably the fact that they are eager to make a better impression on friends, collegues or relatives. Then I don’t know for sure but I can assume that such people are trying to follow fashion trends blindly. Indeed, it is a very ambiguous question whether we should be in chase for the latest fashion trends or not. On the one hand, it helps you to remain influential and fashionable person in every sphere of our life. On the other hand, buying all clothes regardless your tastes and preferences can lead to disappearing your personality and identity. That is why I have my own unique style. I never ever buy clothes in ordinary stock shops like Bershka, Mango, Zara because to my mind every piece of clothes in these shops looks the same. So I prefer to make clothes by myself. Obviously, they are very expensive but at least I am sure they are fashionable.

Clothing is a distinctly human artefact. Even more than the use of tools, it distinguishes humans from the other crea-tures on this planet. The basic purpose of clothing was origi-nally practical. By putting on a skin, humans were able to move into regions where they otherwise would have been unable to cope with the climate. An example of this use of clothing can be seen among the Eskimos, and other people who live with extreme cold. However, clothing was not only used for protection, but has also been a means of dis-playing one’s status. Thus clothing also developed in countries where there is no real practical need for it.
Clothing teils us many things about the wearer. It can be used to indicate whether a person is a member of a particular group or Organisation. The rriost extreme example of this type of clothing is a uniform. A dress code is very important in business. It is a rare businessman who does not feel the need to wear a suit and tie. Most politicians also try to be neat and well-dressed.
The significance of what we wear is becoming more important as the cultures of the world mix. There have been cases on holiday islands where the locals have been outraged by foreign visitors — especially female visitors — who wear far less than the minimum that the locals consider decent. Actually, the signals given by clothing as worn by men and women have decreased because many women now wear what were once men’s clothes. For example, today most women are very comfortable wearing jeans. Yet the sight of a man in a dress would raise eyebrows in most western cultures.
Clothing is very important in our society. So it is highly unlikely that there will be no use for clothing in the future, unless humanity evolves into a completely new species.

Seasons and clothes
There are four seasons in the year. Each of them brings different weather and different dresses. When it is hot people wear T-shirts and shorts, light blouses and skirts, sport shoes, socks and sandals. In cold weather people usually put on warm clothes: jeans and trousers, sweaters and jackets, overcoats and caps. In winter they wear fur coats and fur caps, high boots and mittens or gloves. The proverb says: there is no bad weather, there are bad clothes. Another proverb says: everything is good in its season. When you think what to wear, choose the right dress. Think what is good at the sports ground and what is good at the party and why a long dress looks beautiful on a woman but is funny on a little girl. When you buy clothes, try them on, make sure that they are your size, that they suit you well and that you like their colour.
Can you tell us whatdo women wear? It depends on the season of the year. Usually it is a skirt and a blouse or a dress. If it is cold, they wear a coat. A pair of gloves and a hat is necessary. They also wear shoes. What do men wear? They usually wear a shirt and trousers, a coat or a jacket, socks and shoes. If it is cold, they put on a coat, a cap or a hat and a pair of gloves. If it rains, men and women wear a raincoat. In autumn when it is raining hard an umbrella is necessary.
Exercise 4. Answer the questions.
What do you like to wear at home?
What do you like to wear at school?
What do you like to wear when going to the disco club?
What clothes can we wear when the weather is hot?
What clothes can we wear when the weather is cold?
Read and translate.
Janet:
I met your mother in the clothing shop yesterday.
Nancy:
Is that so? What were you doing there?
Janet:
I went to see if I could find a nice jacket. Something to go with my red dress.
Nancy:
Did you see anything you liked?
Janet:
Yes, but they didn’t have my size – only big sizes.
Nancy:
Perhaps you could make it smaller?
Janet:
I was thinking of that. I asked your mother, but she said it would be difficult. She said better wait until I found my own size, and I agreed with her.
Answer the questions:
- Who went shopping yesterday?
- What did she shop for?
- What kind of shop did she go to?
- Did she find the thing?
- Did she buy it? If not, explain why?
- What was her friend advice?
- What did she decide to do, in the end?

8. Where is … shoe department? — It is on … third floor.
9. I think … coat is a little tight. I don’t like … hat you have chosen. … colour is ut becoming to you.
10.I am going to give him … silk tie as … birthday present. He likes ties.
- What clothes are fashionable nowadays?
- What do young people wear?
- Is there one fashion for everyone?
- Does age have anything to do with fashion and the clothes we wear?
1. style
– стиль (casual, formal, fashionable, smart)
2. items of clothing
– предметы одежды (jacket or jumper, trainers or slippers, skirt or trousers, shirt or T-shirt)
3. fabrics
— ткань (made of cotton, wool, linen, silk, leather, lycra)
4. patterns
— рисунок (plain, flowery, striped, checked)
5. colours
Read the opinions about clothes and fashion. What opinion do you share?
- highlight — подчеркивать
- features — черты
- offer — предлагать
- as a rule — как правило
- go camping — ходить в походы
- used to be — когда-то была
- go bankrupt — обанкротятся
- Opinion 1.
People often wear very fashionable
and expensive
clothes but sometimes they can’t wear them well or wear the clothes which highlight
their problems. To my mind, people should choose the clothes which are not fashionable,
but which highlight
their best features.
- Opinion 2.
I don’t care what to wear as I don’t go out very often. As a rule
, we spend evenings at home, sometimes we go camping
at weekends. So, I don’t see any reason to wear fashionable clothes. I prefer to wear casual
clothes because they are comfortable.
- Opinion 3.
I believe that people who say they don’t care for fashionable clothes, usually simply don’t understand how to wear them. Or they don’t have enough money to follow the latest trends
. As for me, I’d prefer to have trendy
clothes than out-of-date
ones.
- Opinion 4.
To my mind, there is no fashion today. It used to be
at the beginning of the 20-th century, when fashion houses offered
new styles every decade. Nowadays fashion doesn’t offer
anything new. Everything can be fashionable. I believe fashion houses will go bankrupt
soon.

Fashion has always had a huge influence on people around the world. The main reason why we try to follow the latest fashion trends is a desire to look stylish, attractive, popular and more confident. Generally people judge a new person by his appearance and his clothes and only then, by his inner qualities. There is a proverb: “Good clothes open all doors.” That’s why we do our best to make a favourable impression on others. We spend a lot of money to keep up with fashion and buy designer clothes.
Fashion often means style, glamour and success. It is also a big business. It’s hard to resist the temptation to buy some brand-name clothing in our modern world. Every day we pass by colourful shop-windows, we see plenty of ads everywhere: on buses, billboards, TV and in magazines. Many teenagers pay too much attention to their friends’ and classmates’ appearance. Sadly, if some parents are not able to afford buying trendy clothes with fashion labels, their kids often become outsiders. So clothes usually separate people into social groups.
In my opinion every person can have his own style and look unique. He should choose clothes according to his taste, age, job, constitution and character. I am glad to say that I don’t pay so much attention to fashion and I am not its victim. I don’t care too much about what other people wear. The most important thing for me in the outlook is neatness, natural look and beauty. And it should certainly suit the occasion. I must admit that some fashionable clothes are quite ridiculous and unpractical. There was a time, for instance, when young people wore baggy clothes, shoes on enormous platforms, red hair, black fingernails and bright make-up. To my mind, it was just a silly waste of money. Besides, if a person doesn’t have a good taste he is not able to put things together and look attractive and stylish even in fashionable clothes.

Fashion
Today we think about fashion a lot because every morning we have to pick our clothes for the day and also when we see meet new people, at first we judge them by the way they look and what they wear because it`s the the only thing we know about them.
Our clothes reflect our social status. For example if you are a business lady you should be dressed appropriately, it is preferable to wear well branded clothes.
Some people spend a lot of time on buying clothes because it helps them to forget about different life problems. It means shopping for clothes can be a good therapy in case of troubles, but you shouldn`t become a shopaholic and buy everything you see, the sense of style of clothes is extremely important.
Some people have the idea that it isn`t necessary to spend huge amounts of money on designer clothes. I believe that one should have at least several designer clothes in the wardrobe for special occasions, like a friend`s wedding, for example.
Nowadays fashion is an inseparable part of our life and it doesn`t matter whether you`re wearing expensive clothes or bought them on sale if you look good and dressed with taste.

Comment on one of the following statements.
1. Good clothes open all doors.
2. Exams motivate students to study harder.
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200–250 words. Use the following plan:
− make an introduction (state the problem)
− express your personal opinion and give 2–3 reasons for your opinion
− express an opposing opinion and give 1–2 reasons for this opposing opinion
− explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion
− make a conclusion restating your position
Строить высказывания в соответствии с предложенным планом;
Начинать введение с общего представления темы и предложения, отображающего ее проблемный характер;
Во введении необходимо перефразировать тему/проблему, используя синонимичные выражения;
В основной части сначала высказать свое мнение и аргументировать его, затем представить точки зрения других людей и дать аргументацию, почему с ними не согласны;
Приводя контраргументы, отстаивая свою точку зрения, желательно использовать перифраз, синонимию;
В заключительном абзаце еще раз указать на проблемный характер темы, показать, что вы способны видеть и другие точки зрения, тем не менее ваша кажется вам более убедительной;
Делить текст на абзацы, которые отражают содержательную и логическую структуру текста;
Сделать введение и заключение приблизительно одинаковыми по объему;
Разбить основную часть как минимум на два абзаца, приблизительно одинаковых по размеру;
Следить за тем, чтобы общий объем основной части был не меньше общего объема введения и заключения;
Communication has always been a sensitive issue. When speaking of it, some say good clothes can open all doors, others disagree that looks are not capable of such things.
I tend to agree with the latter for two main reasons. The first one is the fact that you need to talk to some people before you can get a door open most of the time. Clothes do help a bit while talking, but the result comes from you manners and your motives. The second reason is that for some people too expensive and outstanding clothing can mean they should stay alert and watch the one wearing it carefully, which makes it harder for him to earn their trust.
However, there are people who think that clothing gives others an impression of you before you start the talking and thus defines the outcome of the dialogue. They seem to think that a well-dressed person earns respect upon approaching others and can make use of it immediately.
I cannot agree with them, though. Clothing can tell others you have a taste for style or that you are rich, but does that mean respect? I think it does not. The way you dress and your personality are not that closely related.
To conclude, it is safe to say clothes can help you open doors, but they can»t do this job all by themselves.
Today»s discussion is about fashion.
Essay on About fashion
There is a proverb: “Good clothes open all doors”. It means that when people don’t know you they judge you by appearance and especially clothes. When you see the person wearing a perfect expensive suit your brain creates the image of successful businessmen in front of you. Instead, the person wearing old jeans and simple T-shirt won’t be allowed to enter the restaurant or many other establishments. It’s considered normal, but should it be this way?
For the vast majority of people, the word “fashion” means a lot and makes their way of living. Nowadays it’s still associated with clothes and accessories but, moreover, it influences our choice of food, technologies and even medicine. A lot of people waste money in order to seem to be fashionable and follow modern tendencies. Furthermore, they don’t choose the things they like just to correspond with social demands. Running this rat race people forget about their personal identity, their tastes and wishes.
One more important thing that we lose trying to be in fashion is our comfort. Most clothes perfectly suit fashion shows and ideal model bodies but not the real life. Choosing extremely fashionable things you risk looking funny and dull. Anyway, the power of fashion industry is so strong that it’s difficult to struggle with the desire to be similar to people from magazine covers or billboards.
I also think the thing is that the fashion changes so rapidly that there is no sense in following it all the time. I don’t see any necessity in buying expensive fashionable dresses which will be out of fashion in several months and you will look «wrong» wearing it.
I’m absolutely convinced that there is no better thing than feeling comfortable and confident in things you wear. I prefer to invest in good quality products that are fashionable all the time rather than wasting money trying to impress everyone around me.

A. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.
B. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.
C. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more ‘parts of old beds’ turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. ‘But these bits are priceless!’ exclaimed the keeper of the museum. ‘They are Iron Age jewellery and coins!’ Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.
D. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren’t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins — they’re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and — a big bonus — they will eat anything!
E. In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it’s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others.
F. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don’t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.
G. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What’s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

‘Have you written a letter to the Froplinsons?’ asked Egbert.
‘No,’ said Janetta, with a note of tired defiance in her voice; ‘I’ve written eleven letters today expressing surprise and gratitude for sundry unmerited gifts, but I haven’t written to the Froplinsons yet.’
‘Someone will have to do it,’ said Egbert.
‘I don’t dispute the necessity, but I don’t think that someone should be me,’ said Janetta. ‘I wouldn’t mind writing a letter of angry recrimination or heartless satire to some suitable recipient. In fact, I should rather enjoy it, but I’ve come to the end of my capacity for expressing servile amiability. Eleven letters today and nine yesterday, all couched in the same strain of ecstatic thankfulness: really, you can’t expect me to sit down to another. There is such a thing as writing oneself out.’
‘I’ve written nearly as many,’ said Egbert, ‘and I’ve had my usual business correspondence to get through, too. Besides, I don’t know what it was that the Froplinsons sent us.’ ‘A William the Conqueror calendar,’ said Janetta, ‘with a quotation of one of his great thoughts for every day in the year.’
‘Impossible,’ said Egbert; ‘he didn’t have three hundred and sixty-five thoughts in the whole of his life, or, if he did, he kept them to himself.’
‘Well, it was William Wordsworth, then,’ said Janetta; ‘I know William came into it somewhere.’
‘That sounds more probable,’ said Egbert; ‘well, let’s collaborate on this letter and get it done. I’ll dictate, and you can scribble it down. ‘Dear Mrs. Froplinson, thank you and your husband so much for the very pretty calendar you sent us. It was very good of you to think of us.’ ’
‘You can’t possibly say that,’ said Janetta, laying down her pen. ‘We sent them something on the twenty-second,’ said Janetta, ‘so they simply had to think of us. There was no getting away from it.’
‘What did we send them?’ asked Egbert gloomily.
‘Bridge-markers,’ said Janetta, ‘in a cardboard case, with some inanity about ‘digging for fortune with a royal spade’ emblazoned on the cover. The moment I saw it in the shop I said to myself ‘Froplinsons’ and to the attendant ‘How much?’ When he said ‘Ninepence,’ I gave him their address, jabbed our card in, paid tenpence or elevenpence to cover the postage, and thanked heaven. With less sincerity and infinitely more trouble they eventually thanked me.’
‘The Froplinsons don’t play bridge,’ said Egbert.
‘One is not supposed to notice social deformities of that sort,’ said Janetta; ‘it wouldn’t be polite. Besides, what trouble did they take to find out whether we read Wordsworth with gladness? For all they knew or cared we might be frantically embedded in the belief that all poetry begins and ends with John Masefield, and it might infuriate or depress us to have a daily sample of Wordsworthian products flung at us.’
‘Well, let’s get on with the letter,’ said Egbert. ‘How clever of you to guess that Wordsworth is our favourite poet.’
Again Janetta laid down her pen.
‘Do you realise what that means?’ she asked; ‘a Wordsworth booklet next Christmas, and another calendar the Christmas after, with the same problem of having to write suitable letters of thankfulness. No, the best thing to do is to drop all further allusion to the calendar and switch off on to some other topic.’
‘But what other topic?’
‘Oh, something like this: ‘What do you think of the New Year Honours List? A friend of ours made such a clever remark when he read it.’ Then you can stick in any remark that comes into your head; it needn’t be clever. The Froplinsons won’t know whether it is or isn’t.’
‘We don’t even know on which side they are in politics,’ objected Egbert; ‘and anyhow you can’t suddenly dismiss the subject of the calendar. Surely there must be some intelligent remark that can be made about it.’
‘Well, we can’t think of one,’ said Janetta wearily; ‘the fact is, we’ve both written ourselves out.’
There was a long silence, the forlorn silence of those who are bereft of hope and have almost ceased to care. Then Egbert started from his seat with an air of resolution. The light of battle was in his eyes.
‘Let me come to the writing-table,’ he exclaimed; ‘I’m going to write to the editor of every enlightened and influential newspaper in the Kingdom, I’m going to suggest that there should be a sort of epistolary Truce of God during the festivities of Christmas and New Year. From the twenty-fourth of December to the third or fourth of January it shall be considered an offence against good sense and good feeling to write or expect any letter or communication that does not deal with the necessary events of the moment. Answers to invitations, arrangements about trains, renewal of club subscriptions, and, of course, all the ordinary everyday affairs of business, sickness, engaging new cooks, and so forth, these will be dealt with in the usual manner as something inevitable. But all the devastating accretions of correspondence, incident to the festive season, these should be swept away to give the season a chance of being really festive.’
‘But you would have to make some acknowledgment of presents received,’ objected Janetta; ‘otherwise people would never know whether they had arrived safely.’
‘Of course, I have thought of that,’ said Egbert; ‘every present that was sent off would be accompanied by a ticket bearing the date of dispatch and the signature of the sender, and some conventional hieroglyphic to show that it was intended to be a Christmas or New Year gift; there would be a counterfoil with space for the recipient’s name and the date of arrival, and all you would have to do would be to sign and date the counterfoil, add a conventional hieroglyphic indicating heartfelt thanks and gratified surprise, put the thing into an envelope and post it.’
‘It sounds delightfully simple,’ said Janetta wistfully, ‘but people would consider it too perfunctory.’
‘It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system,’ said Egbert; ‘I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at. So you see the present system of acknowledgment is just as perfunctory and conventional as the counterfoil business would be, only ten times more tiresome and brain-racking.’
‘Your plan would certainly bring the idea of a Happy Christmas a step nearer realisation,’ said Janetta. ‘Meanwhile, what am I to say to the Froplinsons?’
