1.
The
avocado originated in Mexico. The native uncultivated variety is small, with
dark black skin, and contains a large seed. The oldest evidence of avocado use,
which dates to around 10 000 BC, was found in a cave in Mexico. The avocado
tree also has a long period of cultivation in Central and South America. A
water jar shaped like an avocado, dating to AD 900, was discovered in the
pre-Incan city of Chan Chan.

2.
The
word ‘avocado’ comes from the Spanish ‘aguacate’. Avocados were known by the
Aztecs as ‘the fertility fruit’. In some countries of South America, such as
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, the avocado is known by its
Quechua name ‘palta’. The fruit is sometimes called an ‘avocado pear’ or
‘alligator pear’ due to its shape

and
the rough green skin. It is known as ‘Butter Fruit’ in parts of India.

3.
The
avocado tree does not tolerate freezing temperatures, and can be grown only in
subtropical or tropical climates. High winds reduce the humidity, dehydrate the
flowers, and affect pollination. When even a mild frost occurs, premature fruit
drop may occur. The trees also need well-aerated soils, ideally more than 1 m
deep. These soil and climate conditions are available only in a few areas of
the world.

4.
An
average avocado tree produces about 500 avocados annually. Commercial orchards
produce an average of seven tonnes per hectare each year, with some orchards
achieving 20 tonnes per hectare. The avocado is a climacteric fruit, which
means it matures on the tree, but ripens off the tree. Avocados used in
commerce are picked hard and green and kept in coolers until they reach their
final destination.

5.
Avocados
are often grown from pits. This is done by removing the pit from a ripe,
unrefrigerated avocado. The

pit
is placed in a jar or vase with tepid water. In four to six weeks, it should
split and out should come roots and a

sprout.
Once the stem has grown a few inches, it is placed in a pot with soil. It
should be watered every few days.

Avocados
have been known to grow large, so owners must be ready to repot the plant
several times.

6.
The
fruit is not sweet, but fatty, and distinctly yet subtly flavoured. It is used
in both savoury and sweet dishes, though in many countries not for both. The
avocado is very popular in vegetarian cuisine as substitute for meats because
of its high fat content. Generally, avocado is served raw, though some cultivars
can be cooked for a short time without becoming bitter. Avocados are also used
to make salads.

7.
Avocado
leaves, bark, skin, or pit are documented to be harmful to animals. Cats, dogs,
cattle, and horses can be

severely
harmed or even killed when they consume them. Avocado leaves contain a fatty
acid derivative, persin, which in sufficient quantity can cause equine colic
and, without veterinary treatment, death. Birds also seem to be

particularly
sensitive to this compound. Negative effects in humans seem to be primarily in
allergic individuals.

Every
invention has an official birth date. For the Cube this date is 1974 8
__________ .
The inventor’s name is

now
a household word, Rubik’s Cube.

Although 1974 marks the appearance of the Cube, the processes that led to the
invention began a few years earlier. At the time, Erno Rubik was a lecturer at
the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest.

In the course of his teaching, Erno Rubik preferred to communicate his ideas by
the use of actual models, made from wood or plastic, 9 _________ . When
the Cube was completed, Erno Rubik demonstrated it to his students and let some
of his friends play with it. The effect was instantaneous. Once somebody laid
his hands on the Cube,

 10
_________!
The compulsive interest of friends and students in the Cube
caught its creator completely by surprise and it was months before any thought
was given to the possibility of producing it on an industrial scale.

During 1978, the Cube began to make its way through the hands of fascinated
youths into homes and schools 11_________ . The challenge of trying to
master the Cube seemed to have a mesmeric effect on an amazing variety of

individuals.
Grandmothers, bank managers, pilots and librarians could be seen working away
at their Cubes at any hour of the day. But it was the young, schoolboys and
students, 12 _________. Now the Cube is
part of a family

of
puzzles and games which bear the stamp of the genius who created the greatest
three dimensional puzzle the world has ever known.

Erno Rubik has not changed much over the years. Working closely with Seven
Towns, he is still deeply engaged in creating new games and puzzles, and
remains one of the

As
the saying goes … ‘water, water, everywhere’. Well, how much water is there;
where is this water; how does it

move
around?

It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to not have clean water to drink. Water is
not evenly divided around the world. Some places have lots and others have very
little. Water supply is a big problem in some countries. Some people in Africa
carry water from a hole 8 __________ . This water source might not even
be in their town and they will have to travel to get it. Some kids wrote about
how they have dirty water at their school and sometimes kids get sick from
drinking it. We wonder 9 __________ .

We thought that the United States didn’t have any of those problems but we were
wrong. Appalachia, in the southern part of the United States, has some homes 10
___________.

In Arizona, the Central Arizona Project gets water piped in from the Colorado
River. This is a problem for the places that used to get most of the Colorado
River water 11 __________ . There are rules about how much water can

be
taken out of rivers. Some rivers in the West have reached that limit. There are
‘water wars’ where people argue over 12 __________ .

The problem of water supply keeps a lot of people looking for new ways to use
water better. Every time we use it, we take water away from the Earth. We know
how it flows on the surface and underground 13 __________ . In the past few
years, many households have been using rain barrels attached to the downspout
of their gutters to store and use rain water for the lawn and garden. If we
don’t spend that extra five minutes in the shower, or run the water when we brush
our teeth, we can make a difference!

3. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was bom.

4. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.

5. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more «parts of old beds» turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. «But these bits are priceless!» exclaimed the keeper of the museum. They are Iron Age jewellery and coins! Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.

6. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren’t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins — they’re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and — a big bonus — they will eat anything!

7. In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it’s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between himself and others.

8. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don’t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.

9. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What’s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

Every invention has an official birth date. For the Cube this date is 1974 1 . The inventor’s name is now a house hold word, Rubik’s Cube.

Although 1974 marks the appearance of the Cube, the processes that led to the invention began a few years earlier. At the time, Emo Rubik was a lecturerat the AcademyofApplied Arts and Crafts in Budapest.

In the course of his teaching, Emo Rubik preferred to communicate his ideas by the use of actual models, made from wood or plastic, 2 . When

The Cube was completed, Emo Rubik demonstrated it to his students and let some of his friends play with it. The effect was instantaneous. Once somebody laid his hand on the Cube, 3 . The compulsive interest of friends and

Students in the Cube caught its creator completely by surprise and it was months before any thought was given to the possibility of producing it on an industrial scale.

During 1978 the Cube began to make its way through the hands of fascinated youths into homes and schools 4 . The challenge of trying

To master the Cube seemed to have a mesmeric effect on an amazing variety of individuals. Grandmothers, bank managers, baseball players, pilots, librarians could be seen working away at their Cubes at any hour of the day. But it was the young, schoolboys and students, 5____ . Now the Cube is part of a family

Of puzzles and games which bear the stamp of the genius who created the greatest three dimensional puzzle the world has ever known.

Emo Rubik has not changed much over the years. Working closely with Seven Towns, he is still deeply engaged in creating new games and puzzles, and remains one of the principal beneficiaries of 6 .

A grave mistake?

On 12 February 1924, Howard Carter, amateur archaeologist, watched a pulley winch to open a sarcophagus. He was about to witness a sight unseen for thousands of years: the face of a Pharaoh of Egypt.

The story of how the tomb with its riches and the mummified body of Tutankhamen was discovered is well known and there is no doubt that without

Carter’s enthusiasm and determination the most exclusive cemetery in the world would not have been discovered. What is more debatable, however, is the truth Surroundingthe supposed Curse of Tutankhamen.

After discovering the tomb, Carter refused to enter it until his patron Lord Carnarvon was by his side. It was, after all, Carnarvon’s generosity which had allowed Carter to carry out his ambition of finding an unplundered tomb. They were awestruck at the contents of the chamber and in the dead of night, returned to the tomb to observe the wonders that the chamber held. It was this secret entry that supposedly caused the anger of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen.

A few days after the official opening of the burial chamber, Lord Carnarvon accidentally cut a mosquito bite on his cheek while shaving. It became septic, and Lord Carnarvon came down with a fever. A couple of weeks later he died of pneumonia. As he breathed his last breath, it is said that all the lights across Cairo flickered and went out. Bizarrely, at the same moment back in England, his beloved dog howled, then dropped dead. It was immediately claimed by the newspapers that Lord Carnarvon had been the victim of a curse. Rumours of even more mysterious circumstances began to circulate. It was said that on the day of the discovery, Carter’s pet canary had been eaten by a cobra, the same serpent which is portrayed on the brow of a Pharaoh spitting poison.

It was also claimed that a mysterious inscription had been found near the tomb, 25 warning that «Death will come on swift wings to whosoever touches the tomb of the Pharaoh.», although it was acknowledged that these words had strangely vanished. The death of anyone associated with the opening of Tutankhamen’s tomb was used as proof of the Curse.

To a public raised on the exotic novels of Rider Haggard and Wilkie Collins this was very exciting. But, in reality, if the Pharaoh was seeking revenge on those who had desecrated his tomb, then he was very selective. Above all, he seems to have spared the life of the most obvious candidate for his revenge — Howard Carter himself. Even scientific attempts to argue that the Curse was true — for instance, theories that there were deadly microbes in the tomb, or poisonous fungi — must founder on that one conclusive fact. It is no wonder that Carter himself was so contemptuous when asked about the Curse — «The answer», he would reply, «is spherical and in the plural». Instead of dying in premature and mysterious circumstances, Carter in fact lived for 17 years after his incredible discovery. Yet one great mystery, which Carter himself was powerless to solve, continues to exist. There was barely any evidence found which could shed light on Tutankhamen himself. His reign remains a mystery; his character even more so. Although there have been numerous autopsies on his mummy, we cannot even be certain what caused his death — it has been suggested that he was murdered or killed in battle. As Carter was forced to confess, «the mystery of his life eludes us — the shadows move, but the dark is never quite dispersed».

All we can be certain of is that Tutankhamen, like any Egyptian, would have craved the remembrance which it was believed gave a spirit true life after death. Forgotten for over three thousand years, the boy king’s name is now famous all over the world. Thanks to the efforts of Howard Carter, Tutankhamen has true immortality at last.

Lunch of the double

I am not easily shocked, but I still haven’t got over a recent experience in New-York. A business contact had invited me to lunch at a trendy restaurant. I turned up on time, expecting a gastronomic treat and a leisurely chat about matters of mutual interest. So you can imagine how I felt when he said that, sorry, we could only share a first course because he had scheduled a second lunch appointment. What nerve! What an insult! I vowed to never speak to him again, until a friend of mine told me that such bad manners have become quite fashionable among Manhattan’s movers and shakers. It wasn’t personal, just the trendy thing to do. It seems that many business executives are double and triple decking their lunches like club sandwiches, a practice known as Type A feeding behaviour’. It works like this: an appetizer at the Four Seasons, a hamburger with another client at 21, and dessert and coffee with a third business contact at Michael’s. The whole silly business is another version of

The power game, a demonstration that you are more important than your Suest and that your time is therefore more valuable.

I don’t know what anyone hopes to gai∏ by this kind of nonsense. It certainly didn’t work with me; and I can well imagine the reaction of other visitors from countries which still regard lunch as a serious matter, an opportunity to establish or nurture personal relationships, exchange views, lay the foundations for a deal, or celebrate the successful outcome of negotiations. I have made lasting friends and have initiated many lucrative transactions over lunch at good London restaurants like Langan’s and Shepherd’s. I believe that mixing business with pleasure is part of civilized behaviour, and all the more agreeable if one can do it on an expense account.

My idea of a good time is an hour-long lunch with a companion who doesn’t look at his watch every five minutes, who has something interesting to say, and who thinks that my opinions are worth listening to. The ambience should be stylishly casual, the service attentive but not rushed and the menu as intriguing as a balance sheet. I can do without martinis, but I prefer wine to water. I would not dream of going to the Four Seasons or Le Cirque in Manhattan’s excellent Palace Hotel and insulting the chef as well as my guest by settling for a bowl of soup. The simple answer is to lay down the ground rules beforehand. Make it clear how much time you have available and ask the guest if it fits in with his own schedule. What made my experience so shocking is that it came as a complete surprise. I hope that the insulting practice of back-to-back lunch dates is one New York trend that will not catch on in London, Paris, Rome, or Berlin. We Europeans have a reputation for lingering over our lunches. I gather that US cities like Chicago and San Francisco are holding the line at the single lunch, which is good news. They have great restaurants which deserve the appreciative patronage of relaxed and discerning customers.

I don’t mind if a host wants to show how powerful he is, it’s all part of business. However, there is more than one way of doing this. A really important player is careful in his choice of guests, but gives them his full attention. He demonstrates his power by not rushing off to another restaurant or to the office.

∣A15What is Type A feeding’ behaviour?

1) when business executives have club sandwiches for lunch

2) when business executives have lunch at the best restaurants

3) when business executives have not scheduled their lunch in advance

4) when business executives have different courses with different guests

∣A16 How did the writer feel about this?

1) silly 2) Pleasantlyshocked

3) offended 4) trendy

∣A17 Why according to the writer, do some business executives do this?

1) They don’t like eating with the same people.

2) Theywant to show they are more powerful than their guests.

3) They don’t have time.

4) They are silly and play games.

∣A18 How does the writer view lunch?

1) as a way of making friends and doing business

2) as a way of celebrating and having fun

3) as a way of ensuring you get a nutritious meal

4) as a strict business meeting

I A19 According to the writer, a business lunch

1) should not be rushed.

2) should be stylish.

3) should have a balanced menu.

4) should have quick service.

∣A20What is implied about Chicago and San Francisco?

1) They are holding the same line as New York.

2) They deserve a patronage from New York.

3) There is some good news about restaurants.

4) They are not following New York in this fashion.

∣A211 What conclusion does the writer give us

1) It doesn’t matter how powerful a host is.

2) Do not change restaurants all the time.

3) Show your power in another way.

4) It’s all part of business.

I. «When men first flew in space, they were amazed to discover that the only me∏-made object visible from orbit was the Great Wall in China.» This is a nice idea, but it’s not true. The Great Wall is mostly grey stone in a grey landscape and, in fact, is very difficult to see even from an aeroplane flying at a mere 15 kilometres above. What can be seen when Orbitingthe earth are the fires of African desert people and the lights of fishing boats off Japan.

J. Th≡ term «Mayday» is an internationally recognized radio signal which is only used when a ship is in great danger and needs help immediately. The signal is transmitted on a wavelength of 2.182 kHz, which is permanently monitor^ by rescue services on the shore. The use of this expression has a very SttalHhtforward explanation. It came from the French phrase «m’aidez», which rfle≡∏s «help me».

K. In 1700, Henri Misson1 a Frenchman visiting Britain asked villagers why they had horseshoes nailed above their doors. They said ‘it was to keep witches away. Horseshoes are made of iron and the strength of the iron was thought to protect from evil. Still today they are thought to bring good luck and many brides cany silver ones at their weddings. The position of the horseshoe is very important. It must point upwards like a cup so that the luck cannot fall out.

L. Women generally live about six years longer than men. Evidence suggests that boys are the weaker sex at birth, which means that more die in infancy. Also women do not have as much heart disease as men. In terms of lifestyle, men smoke more than women and thus more die of smoking- related diseases. Also, they generally have more dangerous occupations, such as building work.

S. Scientists say that rats can help to look for earthquake survivors buried in the ruined buildings. Dogs are already used to search for people, but rats can be even more useful. Like dogs they’ve got a great sense of smell, but scientists still need to train rats to sniff out people and to carry special radio transmitters to let them know when the survivor is found. Rats may also be trained to find bombs Orexplosives.

T. Dinosaurs roared for about 150 million years before they disappeared. We humans have only been around for about 2 million years. But cockroaches are 350 million years old and still going strong! Cockroaches can survive in extreme conditions. They can be frozen, then thawed, and walk away as if nothing had happened. They can go for incredibly long time without eating anything. And that is the secret of their success!

U. Founded in 1980, BASE jumping grew out of skydiving. But BASE jumping is much more dangerous than skydiving that is why it is banned in many countries. Legal jumps now happen on specific days and from approved structures. However, like other extreme sports, it’s the risk of disaster that makes BASE jumping so exciting.

As soon as it was over, Dorian Gray rushed behind the scenes into the greenroom. When he entered the room, Sibyl Vane looked at him, and an expression of infinite joy came over her. «How badly I acted tonight, Dorian!» she cried.

«Horribly!» he answered, gazing at her in amazement. «Horribly! It was dreadful. Are you ill? You have no idea what I suffered.»

«Dorian,» she answered, «you should have understood. But you understand now don’t you?»

«Understand what?» he asked, angrily.

«Why I was so bad tonight. Why I shall always be bad. Why I shall never act well again.»

He shrugged his shoulders. «You are ill, I suppose. When you are ill you shouldn’t act. You make yourself ridiculous. My friends were bored. I was bored.»

«Dorian,» she cried, «before I knew you, acting was the one reality of my life. It was only in the theatre that I lived. You came and you freed my soul from prison. You taught me what reality really is. Tonight, for the first time in my life, I saw through the silliness of the empty theatre in which I had always played. You had made me understand what love really is. Oh Dorian, you understand now what it means? Even if I could do it, it would be an offence for me to play at being in love. You have made me see that.»

He threw himself down on the sofa and turned away his face. «You have killed my love,» he muttered. «You used to stir my imagination. Nowyou don’t even stir my curiosity. I loved you because you were marvellous, because you had genius and intellect. You have thrown it all away. You are nothing to me now. I will never see you again. I will never think of you. Without your art you are nothing.»

The girl grew white and trembled. «You are not serious, Dorian?» she murmured. «You are acting.»

«Acting! I leave that to you. You do it so well,» he answered bitterly.

A low moan broke from her, and she flung herself at his feet. «Dorian, Dorian, don’t leave me!» she whispered. «I am sorry I didn’t act well. I was thinking of you all the time. But I will try, indeed, I will try. Can’t you forgive me for tonight? Don’t leave me!»

«I am going,» he said at last in his calm clear voice. «1 don’t wish to be unkind, but I can’t see you again. You have disappointed me.»

Не turned and left the room. In a few moments he was out of the theatre.

He hailed a horse carriage and drove home. As he entered his bedroom, his eye fell upon the portrait Basil Hallward had painted of him and he immediately started back as if in surprise. The face appeared to him to be a little changed. He could see the lines of cruelty round the mouth as if he had just done some dreadful thing. He winced and quickly glanced into a miσor. No line like that warped his red lips. What did it mean?

Suddenly there flashed across his mind what he had said in Basil Hallward’s studio the day the picture had been finished. He had uttered a mad wish that he himself might remain young, and the portrait grow old; that his own beauty might be untarnished, and the face on the canvas bear the burden of his passionsand his sins. Surelyhiswish had not been fulfilled? Such things were impossible. And yet, there was the picture before him, with the touch of cruelty in the mouth.

Cruelty! Had he been cruel? It was the girl’s fault, not his. He had dreamed of her as a great artist, had given his love to her because he had thought her great. Then she had disappointed him. And yet a feeling of infinite regret came over him, as he thought of her lying at his feet sobbing like a little child.

But the picture? What was he to say of that? It held the secret of his life, and told his story. It had taught him to love his own beauty. Would it teach him to loathe his own soul? Would he ever look at it again?

E. Turn a Bad Habit into a Good Idea

F. Fat People Are at Risk

G. Prevention Is Better than Cure

H. Choose Proper Nutrition

1. There are numerous problems associated with obesity. It is not just a cosmetic problem but also a health hazard. Doctors generally agree that the more obese a person is, the more likely he or she is to have health problems. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions. People who are overweight can gain significant health benefits from losing weight.

2. Hey, couch potato! Don’t feel guilty indulging in serials or reality shows – use the commercials as an excuse to burn calories. There is probably an average of 15 minutes of commercials in an hour-long program. If you exercised through each commercial break during just two hours of TV, you’d already have met the recommended amount of daily exercise necessary to reduce health risk.

3. Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can help avoid a lot of problems in the future. The main aim of a checkup is to detect illness at an early stage. It’s good to find out that you have a health problem before it is too late so appropriate tests should be done at the right time.

4. Do you mainly exercise for a few weeks in January before you forget your New Year’s resolution, and then again when you realize your summer holiday is around the corner? You’d not be alone, but keeping fit is something you should do all year round. You might not be particularly bothered about your appearance or your weight, but keeping fit is as much about what’s on the inside as it is what’s on the outside.

5. Pain is our body’s means to indicate that something is wrong and requires immediate attention. Pain for a short time can be taken care of by a painkiller but if the soreness is lingering for too long, then it requires proper medical expertise. Sometimes life menacing problems have back pain and joint pain as symptoms and can, if neglected, do permanent damage.

6. Think about your car- the higher the grade of the fuel you put in it, the better it runs. Your body works the same way. If you eat healthy food, you’ll be healthier and feel better. Eating well is easy if you aware of what foods are best for you. But don’t worry! Eating healthy food doesn’t mean eliminating every single thing you love from your diet.

7. Do you spend more than 3 hours a day working or maybe playing on a computer? If so, you are at a higher risk than casual computer users. Researchers warn that watching a computer screen for six or more hours a day might be linked to a progressive eye disease. This doesn’t mean, however, that people who work on a computer for less than 3 hours a day will not suffer eye complications due to computer use.

A.Gifted Children Always Become Famous

B. Awareness of Giftedness

C. Special Attitude Is Required

D. Lack of Challenge May Cause Problems

E. Contrary to Popular Belief

F. Gifted Children Have no Support

G. Identifying the Gifted Children

H. Being Gifted Is not Always

1. Gifted children’s behavior differs from that of their age- mates. Many gifted children learn to read early, with better comprehension of the nuances of language. As much as half of the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school. They can work independently at an earlier age and can concentrate for longer periods. They like to learn new things, are willing to examine the unusual, and are highly inquisitive.

2. Being academically gifted is a topic laced with myths and fears, many of which are unfounded. Moreover, academically gifted children often face special problems. So do their parents. Schools treat those children differently from those whose talents lie in other areas, like music, art, and sports. Gifted children may also be learning disabled, or have another disability while being highly intelligent.

3. Social and emotional difficulties are not directly linked to giftedness. Rather, they result from a lack of understanding by the child of the nature of their intellectual difference. Parents and teachers don’t usually discuss this difference with them because of the concern that they get a ‘swelled head’. The risk is that gifted children may view their differences as ‘weird’ or ‘bad’ or try to ignore or deny them.

4. Most of the athletes are allowed to develop their special skills at whatever rate best suits them. No one tries to stop them from becoming much better baseball players or swimmers than their classmates. Yet if an academically gifted child tries to do two years of work in one, that’s viewed as potentially harmful. Much of the concern focuses on the non-academic areas of these gifted children’s development.

5. Researchers emphasize that for the vast majority of academically gifted children those concerns are groundless. In fact, these children are more likely to develop social and even academic problems if they don’t feel intellectually challenged. If gifted children don’t go to challenging programs, they may not learn how to learn. Eventually, in college or graduate school, they feel emotionally overwhelmed when they can’t just coast through their courses anymore.

6.Gifted children represent both a challenge and a resource for schools. Educators have a responsibility to provide programs to meet the educational needs of gifted students who are capable of learning at advanced levels. Ideally, schools should have specifically trained teachers for gifted students to create a challenging and supportive learning environment for these children.

7. Gifted children are often viewed as ‘the smart ones’ who should know everything. Yet, being gifted does not mean they possess great abilities in every area. Albert Einstein was 4 years old before he spoke a word. Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade, and Leo Tolstoy flunked out of college. What do these three famous people have in common? In fact, they are all considered gifted, and in some cases, geniuses.

1. In the earliest days of computers, the only computer education was about computers. We and computers have come a long way since those days. Now computers have invaded every aspect of modern life. Education is no exception. Students can use word processors for writing, spreadsheets for mathematics and science, and databases for organizing information. Lately, the Internet has become a recognized way of getting information.

2. There are many advantages to distance learning. For homeschoolers, it’s a great way to safely get a head start on college before completing high school. In addition, many students don’t have the ability to leave home for maybe family or work obligations. Another huge advantage is the cost savings. Through distance learning, you avoid room and board fees that will have to be paid by a traditional student.

3. In Great Britain many children go to boarding schools. A boarding school can be an excellent placement for an orphaned child, because everyone is treated equally and fairly there. Many parents with non-traditional careers or those undergoing difficult transitions like divorce find boarding schools excellent alternatives. Boarding school can help children grow in independence, and friendships formed in boarding schools often last a lifetime.

4. Considered by many to be a diamond in the rough of the Parkside area, the school boasts a curriculum that encourages technological literacy. The 170 local 9th grade students don’t carry any books or pencils. The school supplies every student with their own laptop. They create multimedia presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint, receive assignments via e- mail, and conduct research online. So far, the unique program has had positive results,

5. Chorister’s schools are educational establishments which have a special emphasis on religious choir singing. These schools are usually attached to a cathedral, church or chapel, where the school choir sings. Choir schools do not exclusively educate choristers: about 15,000 pupils are taught at chorister schools in the UK, but only around 1,000 of those are choristers. Tony Blair, for example, attended the Chorister School but was not himself a Chorister.

6. For the majority of college and university students, involvement in extracurricular activities plays an essential role in the collegiate experience. Students become involved in extracurricular activities not only for entertainment, social and enjoyment purposes, but most importantly, to gain and improve skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exist on US campuses, meeting a variety of student interests.

7. The test is an important benchmark in ensuring that students will be successful in meeting the challenges they will face either in college or the workplace. If they are not able to meet the standards of the exam, how can we expect them to be successful in life? Examinations can be traumatic for both and their teachers. But just because nobody really enjoys them, we should not disregard them as a necessary part of the education process.

and — и

as well as — а также

not only… but also…

She didn’t speak to anyone and nobody spoke to her.

The organization gives help and support to people in need, as well as it raises money for local charities.

Shakespeare was not only an outstanding writer but he was also a talented actor.

but — но, а, да

and — a

yet — однако, но

They rushed to the hospital, but they were too late.

I went to bed, and my brother went to watch TV.

Kelly was a convicted criminal, yet many people admired him.

or — или

either… or… или…

I have to defend myself or he’ll kill me.

Either you’ll change your mind, or we’ll go without you.

The events we experience are less important than the meaning we give to them; life is about meaning, not experience.

Where she works is not important.

What upset me most was his rudeness.

The question is whether they will vote for us.

The trouble is that I don’t know his phone number.

I don’t know whether she will join us tomorrow.

I thought (that) you were right.

That’s the girl who is going out with John.

My brother Jim, who lives in London, is a doctor.

We’ll go out when it stops raining.

I’ll come as soon as I finish.

She was standing exactly where you are standing now.

I’ve hidden the money where no one will find it.

We didn’t enjoy the day because the weather was so awful.

As it was getting late, I turned around to start for home.

I was feeling hungry, so I made myself a sandwich.

The gravestones were covered with moss that is why it was impossible to read the names on them.

Mrs Crump looked as if she was going to explode.

Helen comes to visit me as often as she can.

You can copy down my answers, although I’m not sure they’re right.

No matter how much she ate, she didn’t get fat.

The teacher gave us the textbook in order that we might learn the rule.

He lowered his voice so that Doris couldn’t hear.

If we don’t hurry, we’ll be late.

You won’t pass the exam unless you work harder.

who

There’s the man who stole my bag!

whom

“который” в косвенных падежах (для людей в формальном стиле и после предлогов)

All students whom the Headmistress has invited must come at 5 pm.

That’s the man to whom I gave the money.

which

Have you got the book which I lent you?

that

This is the bike that I got for my birthday.

The school that my mum went to was very traditional.

whose

Tony, whose father is a lawyer, is in trouble with the police.

when

I remember the day when the war began.

where

The resort where we spent our holidays was great!

why

That’s the reason why he’s always late.

• идентифицирует член предложения, к которому оно относится, сообщая о нём существенную информацию, без которой предложение теряет смысл;

В нём можно употреблять that вместо who или which (менее формально).

Those are the books which/that I told you about yesterday.

Those are the books I told you about yesterday.

• описывает член предложения, к которому оно относится, сообщая о нём дополнительную информацию, которую можно опустить без ущерба для смысла главного предложения;

Bill Gates, who started Microsoft, is now a very rich man.

Heskey passed the ball to Owen, who scored a magnificent goal.

It + is/was + he/she … who/that…

It was Peter who told me about that.

All the Redgrave family are gifted actors. But it is Vanessa who has made the greatest impact in the world of feature films.

It was only in January that I got the test results. —

Предложения с инверсией начинаются со следующих слов исловосочетаний: hardly, barely, scarcely, never, no sooner, only then/after, not only, rarely, seldom, little, under no circumstances, at no time, not until и т. д.:

Hardly/barely/scarcely had we set out when it started raining!

No sooner had the burglar left the house than he was arrested.

Only then/Only after her death did he realize how he loved her.

Not only do the nurses want a pay increase, but they want reduced hours as well.

Rarely/seldom do we get letters from her!

Little did I know/realize that my life was about to change.

Under no circumstances should you leave your child alone in the house!

At no time was the company informed.

Not until we got home did we remember that we had left the keys in the office.

Every invention has an official birth date. For the Cube this date is 1974 A ____________. The inventor’s name is now a household word, Rubik’s Cube.

Although 1974 marks the appearance of the Cube, the processes that led to the invention began a few years earlier. At the time, Erno Rubik was a lecturer at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest.

In the course of his teaching, Erno Rubik preferred to communicate his ideas by the use of actual models, made from wood or plastic, B ____________. During 1978, the Cube began to make its way through the hands of fascinated youths into homes and schools D ____________. The challenge of trying to master the Cube seemed to have a mesmeric effect on an amazing variety of individuals. Grandmothers, bank managers, pilots and librarians could be seen working away at their Cubes at any hour of the day. But it was the young, schoolboys and students, E ____________. Now the Cube is part of a family of puzzles and games which bear the stamp of the genius who created the greatest three dimensional puzzle the world has ever known.

As the saying goes … ‘water, water, everywhere’. Well, how much water is there; where is this water; how does it move around?

It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to not have clean water to drink. Water is not evenly divided around the world. Some places have lots and others have very little. Water supply is a big problem in some countries. Some people in Africa carry water from a hole A ____________. This water source might not even be in their town and they will have to travel to get it. Some kids wrote about how they have dirty water at their school and sometimes kids get sick from drinking it. We wonder В ____________.

We thought that the United States didn’t have any of those problems but we were wrong. Appalachia, in the southern part of the United States, has some homes C ____________.

In Arizona, the Central Arizona Project gets water piped in from the Colorado River. This is a problem for the places that used to get most of the Colorado River water D ____________. There are rules about how much water can be taken out of rivers. Some rivers in the West have reached that limit. There are ‘water wars’ where people argue over E ____________.

The problem of water supply keeps a lot of people looking for new ways to use water better. Every time we use it, we take water away from the Earth. We know how it flows on the surface and underground F ____________. In the past few years, many households have been using rain barrels attached to the downspout of their gutters to store and use rain water for the lawn and garden. ‘Tune In, Turn On, and Drop Out’ was the motto of the hippie movement that grew out of people’s disillusionment with the Vietnam War. Hippies were mainly white teenagers and young adults A ____________.

The immediate precursor to the hippies was the so-called Beat Generation of the late 1950s. But where the intellectual beats tended to stay out of politics, the hippies were known as much for their political outspokenness B ____________. Their opposition to the Vietnam War became one of the most significant aspects of the growing antiwar movement in the second half of the 1960s.

To express their protests, and to ‘turn on’ others, the hippies used art, street theatre and music. This culture reached its peak in the summer of 1967, when a concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park introduced the music of the hippies to a wider audience. The concert inspired thousands of young people around the country to head for San Francisco, C ____________.

In the 60’s, hippies sought to free themselves from societal restrictions, choose their own way and find new meaning in life. This made hippies instantly recognizable to one another and served D ____________.

Hippies often chose brightly coloured clothing. Much of hippie clothing was self-made, and hippies often purchased their clothes from flea markets and second-hand shops. Tiedyeing was very fashionable E ____________.

When you mention the name ‘Hovercraft’ most people think of a helicopter. If someone sees one from the river bank, the term ‘airboat’ comes to their mind because most people are not quite sure A ____________. Few people know of the personal sized hovercrafts B ____________.

A hovercraft is a vehicle, designed to travel over any smooth surface. Hovercrafts are unique among all forms of transportation in their ability to travel equally well over land, ice, and water C ____________. That is why they are used throughout the world as a means of specialized transport D ____________. Hovercrafts can be powered by one or more engines. The engine drives the fan, which is responsible for creating high pressure air. The air inflates the ‘skirt’ under the vehicle, causing it to rise above the ground.

The Hovercraft Museum, located in Hampshire, houses the world’s largest library of documents, publications, photographs and drawings on hovercrafts, E ____________. The museum also contains a large collection of original manufacturer’s hovercraft models including the world’s first working hovercraft model built by Christopher Cockerell.

Cockerell’s idea was to build a vehicle floating on a layer of air, F ____________. To test his hypothesis, he put one smaller can inside a larger can and used a hairdryer to blow air into them. Christopher Cockerell was knighted for his achievement in 1969.

who с людьми

which или that с предметами

where с местами
