Mind that some words are pronounced differently depending on the part of speech. If we stress the first syllable, it is a noun.

Mountains dominate Japan’s landscape, covering 75 to 80 percent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. female chimp has learned how to use the Arabic numerals, 1 to 9, to
memorise the order of five numbers. She, unlike males, was able to
