Fast
food is very popular and saves time for busy working people. However, many
experts say that it is not completely healthy.

Do you know a person who has
never been to McDonald’s? McDonald’s is the leading global foodservice retailer
serving millions of people in more than 100 countries each day. McDonald’s
restaurants sell what is called «fast» or «junk» food —
hamburgers, chips and so on. Such food is very popular, especially with
children and teenagers.

Personally, I adore
hamburgers, cheeseburgers, apple pies, muffins and fruit cocktails. This food
is tasty, cheap and ubiquitous. What is more, going to McDonald’s saves much
time and effort. I don’t have to go to a supermarket, prepare meals and wash
the dishes when I eat out. Besides, I like the holiday atmosphere of
McDonald’s. There I can relax, enjoy the food and celebrate some event with my
friends and relatives.

But experts say that fast food
makes people overweight and even obese and elevates the risk of diabetes and
cancer. If your food includes hamburgers, chips, hot dogs, pizzas and fizzy
drinks like Coke, Pepsi, Sprite and others, you are facing a serious problem
threatening your health. Such food is full of chemical additives. For example,
a can of Coke contains about eight teaspoons of sugar and artificial
sweeteners. Moreover, there is a risk of food poisoning.

To sum it up, we should think more about
our health. We should try to avoid fast food and eat more fruit and vegetables.
Those people who don’t care about what they eat may face serious problems. So
let’s remember about our health and make the right choice.

Пояснение.

38.1 Summer holidays are the longest in a school year, what is why lots of people like them best of all. However, students usually experience summer learning loss. While doing a project on how students in Zetland avoid it, I have found a pie chat containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the data, the majority of the students prefer reading books (41%) as well as practicing languages (31%) to make their brains work in summer. Meanwhile, doing tests is the least preferable way to avoid summer learning loss, only 3% of the respondents have chosen it.

It is worth mentioning, that locating a summer program is not as popular as it seems to be, at 15%. Nevertheless, it is more preferable than visiting museums. In my opinion, students like spending their summertime with peers in a camp more than watching masterpieces of art or learning history in museums.

Although summer holidays are always wonderful per se, without enriching summertime opportunities, the break can lead to serious academic consequences. The best solution to this problem is to choose one of academic summer programs that provides students with strategically planned, structured summer experiences, like lectures, practices, clubs and excursions.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that avoiding summer learning loss is really important for students. It should be done in order to maintain their academic results at a high level. (233 words)

38.2 Life has been becoming faster and eating out is an inherent part of this process. While doing a project on the most popular fast food in Zetland, I have found a table containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the data, people have quite a wide range of dishes when it comes to eating fast. It is clear that the majority of the respondents prefer hamburger, pizza or fries; their joint share is 76%. Although, hot dogs are sold everywhere and Asian food is very popular nowadays, they are at the bottom of the table (15% and 9% respectively).

It is worth mentioning that hamburger has a leading position with 29%. It is more popular than fries that is usually goes with hamburger as a lunch offer in various fast food restaurants. To my mind, fries is only addition to a hamburger or sandwich so it is seldom chosen itself.

One problem that people often face eating fast food is that it is not healthy. Most of these dishes are high in calories, fat or sugar. Of course, there are some soups and salad but it is difficult to eat them on the way. One solution to this problem is to run a fast food chain with a kind of space food, it will be balanced in calories and vitamins, tasty and easy to eat.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that eating healthy food is essential. It will help people live long and happy life. (251 words)

Some people think that fast food is not really harmful for teens, whereas others say that it is really dangerous for health.

soch 001 002

I think that fast food is not very harmful. First of all, teenagers nowadays are very busy with plenty of homework and studies. I am sure it is better to eat something that is not really healthy than to remain hungry. Second, there are different kinds of fast food and not all is unhealthy. One can have salads, desserts or bakery that are not fried in oil and feel pretty good after eating it.

soch 001 003

At the same time there are people who say that if teens eat fast food regularly they can get chronic diseases that are hard to cure.

soch 001 004

Well,  If young people eat fast food often they might spoil their health, however, I do not think one should blame teenagers for their addiction to fast food. Sometimes they have so much work to do that they just do not have any time to eat quality food. There are quite healthy dishes like salads or cakes that one can order in fast food cafes. I also believe that to stay hungry is far worse.

soch 001 005

In conclusion, I would like to say that fast food is not meant to be eaten everyday. One can ruin his or her health in many ways and fast-food is not an exception. I strongly believe that youngsters should be aware of fast food’s potential longterm harmfulness and it is advisable to minimize eating it. Neverthelessin case of emergency it can be eaten, since eating low quality food is better than starving.

or

In conclusionI would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue. At first sight fast food might be dangerous for health but in actual fact starving is even more harmful. Thus, I believe that junk food can be eaten in case of emergency.

1.  What natural resource do Icelanders use as an alternative to central heating?
2.  What should you take with you when going to Iceland?
3.  What are the national characteristics of the local people?
4.  In what seasons can you see snow in Iceland?
5.  What extreme excursions can the country offer?
6.  What does a traditional Icelandic house look like?
7.  Why are these animals widely used in tourist business?
A.  In spite of its hard northern climate, Iceland is very attractive to tourists. Many people who have visited the country once want to go there again and again. The country turns skeptics into poets and optimists. It’s not only because of the views but also because of the local people. Icelanders are friendly and hospitable and welcome guests. It really compensates for the cold harsh climate!
B.  An adventurous traveller would never mistake Iceland’s scenery for any other because of the boiling water fountains and the steam coming from the earth. Smoking volcanoes attract the bravest tourists. Iceland is the only place in the world where you can hike up a volcano and even go inside. There are guided walks to the glaciers, large masses of slowly moving ice, too.
C.  Icelandic weather is unpredictable throughout the year. Bright sunshine can easily change to cold and miserable weather within a few hours. In the summer, rain is typical in Iceland. From September to May, when the temperature falls, it often snows, especially on the south and west coasts.
D.  Till nowadays Icelanders cannot do without horses. And horses are very important not only for farming. From the Viking Age, horses have become a part of Iceland’s culture. They look like My Little Pony toys but they are exceptionally strong, so they can do heavy work and survive cold winters. The horses are good-natured, which is perfect for new riders. Guesthouses and travel companies across the country offer horse rides and tours.
E.  If you decide to visit Iceland, you’ll never regret your decision. The only thing that can spoil your trip is the weather. That’s why it’s very important to get a reliable weather forecast whatever season it is. If you wear appropriate clothes and have some smart heating devices, neither rain nor snow can ruin your trip.
F.  Hengill, a place near Reykjavik, is a famous landmark of the country. It is a field of more than 7 thousand hot springs. The water from the springs is used to warm the houses and to fill the open pools in the capital of Iceland. The water comes from below the earth where the temperature is about seven thousand degrees.

Задание 5

В поле ответа запишите одну цифру, которая соответствует номеру правильного ответа.

Fast Food

When people all over the world are looking for a quick, easy meal, fast food is the most common choice. With good service, low prices and a relaxed atmosphere, fast food looks like the ideal choice. In fact, over 25 percent of Europeans eat fast food every day. Fries and hamburgers are sold everywhere: in big cities, small towns, shopping malls, airports, bus stations, schools, and even hospitals! There are 31,000 McDonald’s worldwide.

However, fast food companies make clients eat more. They offer over-sized burgers, extra-large French fries, and big portions of Coke. What’s more, these “large versions” are usually cheaper. The products have lots of calories, sugar and fat. A typical hamburger at a fast food restaurant weighs 170 grams. In 1957, it was just 50 grams. According to scientists, your fast food meal is like three ordinary meals.

Fast food doesn’t spoil. This is because it has lots of “special” ingredients. There’s a video on YouTube that illustrates this. It is based on a true story. In 1991, an engineer from the USA, Tom Scarvell, met with friends for New Year’s Eve. They stopped at McDonald’s on the way home. He bought some cheeseburgers, ate one and put the other in his coat pocket. Then he forgot about it. A year later, he took the coat out of the wardrobe, put it on and discovered the cheeseburger in his pocket from New Year’s Eve. It looked exactly the same. He was absolutely shocked. He told his friends and family but nobody believed him. So he decided to start a “burger museum” to show everyone that these cheeseburgers and hamburgers don’t decompose.

He started collecting burgers, one every year. He kept them on bookshelves in his living room in the open air. These burgers looked exactly the same, the bun, the meat, the cheese, the special sauce, the cucumber, even the lettuce. They all kept their shape and colour for over five years!

It is surprising that although most people don’t think that fast food is the best choice they can’t stop going to fast food restaurants, like McDonald’s. The chain has healthy dishes on the menu, such as fruit and vegetables. Why not order them? But you don’t go to McDonald’s for a green salad or a yoghurt! The unhealthy hamburgers, French fries and milkshakes are more common and attractive and to many people they are tastier than low calorie dishes.

There is no problem with eating fast food from time to time. If you really are dreaming about a hamburger, go and get it. But if you’re having a stressful day, remember that lunch in a fast food restaurant is not a good choice. Doctors strongly recommend avoiding all fast food and takeaways these days. You can occasionally allow yourself a fast food meal. However, if you are eating it more than once a week, think of giving up.

Fast food should play a small role in your life. If you don’t have a way out, have a fast food meal in one of McDonald’s restaurants but choose the healthier dishes. You should be aware of what you eat and try to develop healthy eating habits.
