Sorry, comments are closed for this post.
Many of us own items we aren’t currently using and don’t plan to use in the near future. From baseball cards to musical instruments, electronics to American Girl Dolls, these goods take up valuable real estate in our homes. While others of us operate e-commerce stores out of our homes and are constantly looking for potential customers to sell to. Fortunately, whether you’re running an online store or just looking to sell some old collectibles, an option exists to help us all declutter our attics and closets while making some money in the process.
Founded in 1995 in Campbell, CA, eBay brings buyers and sellers together in a vast online marketplace. Because of the sheer number of users, sellers can often find buyers willing to pay their desired rates. And while the company does take a portion of each sale, there is usually no fee for listing goods.
In this sense, eBay can be a great resource for sellers who are unfamiliar with the world of online sales and want to get their feet wet.
Steps to Selling on eBay
If you’re interested in selling your goods on eBay, the first step is to create a personal account or business account. If you plan to sell items as part of your business and intend to use its name in your listings, it’s best to opt for a business account.
Along with your address and other contact information, you must create a username and password, and agree to the eBay user agreement and privacy policy. You won’t be asked to provide payment information until you try to buy, sell or bid on an item. While eBay accepts payment via credit card, the company encourages users to submit PayPal account information.
After creating your account, you can start listing items for sale. Start by providing a title for your listing. This may include a UPC, ISBN or part number, as well as any relevant keywords to help searchers find your product. Next, you can upload as many as 12 photos of your item and set the pricing and shipping options.
While some sellers use auction-style pricing to induce bidding wars, others prefer to set a fixed price of sale, known as the “Buy It Now” option. The latter is ideal for sellers who know the true market value of their product and don’t want to waste time with an auction.
The listing page is also where you list shipping prices and options. Some sellers prefer to use USPS flat rate boxes and envelopes rather than pay by the pound, while others utilize calculated shipping that takes buyer location and package weight into account. Additionally, some sellers offer options that include free shipping, international shipping or in-person pickups.
When you’re finished creating your sales listing, you need only click the “List It” button for your item to enter the market. As mentioned above, eBay does charge sellers a fee for each item sold. It’s important to be aware of this fact when setting prices to ensure you will make a sufficient profit on the sale. You can track your listing throughout the auction process by visiting the “My eBay” page, which is where you can respond to questions and concerns from potential buyers.
Once eBay notifies you that a buyer has submitted payment, it’s time to ship your item to the address listed. In some cases, a buyer may not make proper arrangements to pay his bill upon purchasing. If you have yet to receive payment for an item, eBay requests that you try to work things out with the buyer via messages before escalating the matter to eBay staff. Both buyer and seller must come to an agreement to terminate a sales transaction.
Tips for Success
Once you’ve created a business account, it’s time to list the items you wish to sell. Here are some steps for selling products successfully while building your reputation.
Do Your Research
It doesn’t matter how rare or valuable your product is if prospective buyers are unable to find it. To make your listings more searchable, it’s wise to include a few keywords and descriptive terms in the title. If you’re struggling to find the right title for your product, take a few minutes to research similar items that have sold in the past. By being accurate and specific, you can boost your odds of making a healthy profit.
Be Truthful
It’s no secret that people sometimes lie about the quality of goods sold online. After all, customers can’t see what they’re buying up close until they receive it. While not every item you sell needs to be in mint condition, it’s important to be upfront and honest about potential flaws.
For best results, include a few pictures of the item taken in good light as well as a brief description of the defect. Not only does being honest reduce your chances of dealing with an angry buyer down the line, but it also helps establish your reputation as a trusted and reliable dealer.
Ellen: Hey Nick, how’s it going?
Nick: Hey, Ellen, it’s going great! How about yourself?
Ellen: I’m doing well too. Just getting back from my trip to Karelia.
Nick: Really? Who did you go with and how long were you there?
Ellen: I was with my parents. We went camping there for 2 weeks. One week we spent an a camping ground near a small lake and the other way we went white water rafting down the river.
Nick: Wow, what an adventurous holiday! Did you stay in a cabin at the lake?
Ellen: No, we didn’t. We had our tent. We always sleep in a tent when we travel. It’s a lot cheaper.
Nick: Oh my! I wouldn’t be able to do that at all. I’m such a hotel person myself.
Ellen: But why, Nick? Camping in a tent is so much fun! You can hear the birds in the morning, enjoy the fresh air and..
Nick: And mosquitoes? No, thank you! I’d much rather sleep in a comfortable bed, warm and clean. There isn’t a bathroom when you sleep in a tent, is there?
Ellen: No, not in the tent, of course, but the campsite where we stayed at in Karelia had a public bathroom with showers, so that was convenient.
Nick: Well that’s good to hear, but it’s still hard to sleep on the ground in a sleeping bag, I think.
Ellen: Well, yes, at first, but then you get used to it. You can use a special soft mat to sleep on. It keeps you warm and comfortable.
Nick: I suppose I could try that, but I still think a hotel room is a nicer place to stay, Ellen.
Ellen: Well, Nick, tastes differ. So what have you been doing these last 2 weeks before the school starts?
Nick: Oh, I’ve been at home, shopping for school supplies, getting my books and uniform in order, you know.
Ellen: Sounds fun. I still have to try on my uniform and see if I need a new one. I’ve got all the other things, I think. Did you see that new history book for this year? It looks very interesting.
Nick: Yes, I did! I loved the maps and illustrations on it. I hope we have our history teacher from last year again this year.
Ellen: Yeah, me too. She was so nice and her lessons were so fun. History can be quite complicated sometimes.
Nick: So true! Especially when you have to memorise all the dates and names. I can never get it right who led what battle and which Tsar was at the throne at what time.
Ellen: Well, I’m afraid I have to go. There is still much to do.
Nick: Yes, me too. It was good to chat with you, Ellen.
Ellen: Bye, Nick! I’ll see you soon at school.
Nick: Bye.

T-shirts are a universal clothing item. If you’ve ever attended a rock-concert, cheered on a sports team or participated in a charity, you’ve likely racked up a bunch of them. But over time, they tend to get worn out or just overwhelming in volume. Sometimes, a removal might be necessary. There are always people who need gently used clothing to hand them over to. But you can give old T-shirts new life. There are scores of ideas for upcycling them from the simple and practical to the downright creative.
-
Four T-shirts sewn together make a dog blanket that is harder to destroy by chewing and cheaper than dog beds from a pet-shop. A dozen T-shirts can turn to a travel quilt for a grown-up human. To make a travel pillow, just cut around the T-shirt design and add other fabrics around and stuff it all with the leftovers. When one is sick or sweating at night, old T-shirts may serve as pillow covers. Lots of people just sleep wearing them and consider them best pajamas.
-
Not only must your old-T-shirts be clean and in good repair. Make sure that the receiving charity actually needs them. Such organizations rather accept business suits for people to wear to job interviews or gowns for girls who want to attend high school proms but can’t afford a new dress. Illegal businesses often send unneeded clothes overseas ruining local textile and clothing industries. If you really just want to get rid of old clothes, it is better to throw them out.
-
The English obsessed with Do-It-Yourself activities won’t throw away even badly worn-out T-shirts. They’ll wear them or use as rugs for painting or plumbing or polishing silver. Gardeners will cut them into strips and use those strips to tie up tomato plants or trees. Handy women will knit or crochet rugs for kitchen or door-mats out of T-shirt strips. One of them boasted about turning one into a macramé lampshade!
-
They make great surgery recovery shirts for dogs. Dogs do hate these stupid cones, but T-shirts don’t bother them at all. Some people also find T-shirts smooth enough for skin and cut them into small tissues to reuse as makeup-removing wipes soaked in micellar water or a tonic lotion. Old T-shirts are less damaging to dry hair than terry cloth, as well. So why not convert them into towels? And you’ll hardly find a girl who’s never worn an old T-shirt when coloring her hair.
-
Cut the fringe along the bottom and tie up the hole. Cut off sleeves to turn into handles. You’ll get a no-sew reusable grocery substitute to help get plastic bags out of the environment. So easy to make! Still so pleasant to remember and demonstrate your participation in sports competitions, festivals, fundraising and other events you’ve collected T-shirts from every time you use them.
-
Using braiding, knotting and macramé turn them into headbands that won’t squeeze your head. Tear them into strips for hair curls. You can make kid-friendly jewelry from old T-shirts. Cut them into strips, braid them into necklaces, bracelets and scarfs. Safe to chew on for those who can’t get rid of the habit so far. They also serve well as chew toys for dogs. Dolls will also profit from getting clothes made from old T-shirts.

There’s just one essential purchase I have to make on the way to the press conference — and that’s the Financial Times. The FT is by far the best accessory a girl can have. Its major advantages are: a nice colour, price (only 85p.), and if you walk into a room with it tucked under your arm, people take you seriously. With an FT under your arm, you can talk about the most frivolous things in the world, and instead of thinking you’re an airhead, people think you’re a heavyweight intellectual who has broader interests, too.
So I stop at a newsstand and buy a copy of the FT, admiring my reflection in the window of Denny and George. I don’t look bad, I think. I’m wearing my black skirt from French Connection, and a plain white T-shirt from Knickerbox, and a little angora cardigan which I got from M and S but looks like it might be Agnes B. And my new square-toed shoes from Hobbs.
It’s a habit of mine, itemizing all the clothes I’m wearing, as though for a fashion page. I’ve been doing it for years — ever since I used to read Just Seventeen. Every issue, they’d stop a girl on the street, take a picture of her, and list all her clothes. ‘T-Shirt: Chelsea Girl, Jeans: Top Shop, Shoes: borrowed from friend.’ I used to read those lists avidly — and to this day, if I buy something from a shop that’s a bit uncool, I cut the label out. So that if I’m ever stopped in the street, I can pretend I don’t know where it’s from.
So, there I am, gazing at myself, thinking I look pretty good, and half wishing someone from Just Seventeen would pop up with a camera — when suddenly my eyes focus and snap to attention, and my heart stops. In the window of Denny and George is a discreet sign: SALE. I stare at it, my heart thumping hard. It can’t be true. Denny and George never have a sale. Everyone I know in the entire world aspires to owning a Denny and George scarf.
I swallow, push the door open and a girl who works there looks up. I don’t know her name, but I’ve always liked her: she doesn’t mind if you stand for ages staring at clothes you really can’t afford to buy. Usually what happens is, I spend half an hour lusting after scarves in Denny and George, then go off to Accessorize and buy something to cheer myself up. I’ve got a whole drawerful of Denny and George substitutes.
‘Hi,’ I say, trying to stay calm. ‘You’re… you’re having a sale.’
‘Yes.’ The blond girl smiles. ‘Bit unusual for us.’
My gaze sweeps the room. I can see rows of scarves, neatly folded, with dark green ‘50 per cent off’ signs above them. I don’t know where to start.
‘You always liked this one, I think,’ says the nice blond girl, taking out a shimmering grey-blue scarf from the pile in front of her. The girl looks at the label. ‘Reduced from $340 to $120.’ She comes and drapes the scarf around my neck and I stare at my reflection. I have to have this scarf.
‘I’d snap it up, if I were you.’ The girl smiles at me. ‘There’s only one of these left.’
‘I’ll have it,’ I gasp.
As she’s laying it out on tissue paper, I take out my purse, open it up and reach for my VISA card in one seamless, automatic action — but my fingers hit bare leather. I stop in surprise and start to rummage through all the pockets of my purse. And then, with a sickening thud, I remember. It’s on my desk. How could I have been so stupid?
‘How would you like to pay?’ she says pleasantly.
‘I’ve just realized I’ve left my credit card at the office,’ I stutter. ‘Can you hold it for me?’ The girl looks dubious.
‘For how long?’
‘Until tomorrow?’ I say desperately. She’s pulling a face.
‘I’m afraid not,’ she says. ‘We’re not supposed to reserve sale stock.’
‘Just until later this afternoon, then,’ I say quickly. ‘What time do you close?’
‘Six.’
‘Can you hold it until then?’ I say. ‘Please? Please?’ The girl relents.
‘OK. I’ll put it behind the counter.’

A. Contact professionals before travelling to distant countries.
B. There are companies which are ready to help you to start your travels with the minimum of hassle.
C. Passes to different regions allow you to have unforgettable experience of your journey.
D. Travelling in Europe may differ considerably from exploring America.
E. If you want to go easy on your wallet you’ll find reasonable efficient networks in most countries.
F. Rates are lower if you are not alone on your travels.
1. There will be times when you’re travelling when you’ll need to change your plans. You may fall in love with a place and decide you want to stay there a little bit longer. The hop-on, hop-off bus service is just the thing, allowing you to visit nine countries throughout Europe at your own pace. The budget traveller’s preferred option, bus travel is the cheapest way in which to see the country. Flexible passes give you unlimited travel for anything from four to 60 days.
2. For those truly memorable journeys, trains can’t be beaten, whether you’re heading through golden prairie land or the Rocky Mountains. The Train Explorer Pass offers great value with regional passes available depending on which region you intend to visit.
3. America is the home of the open road. The movie and rock , cliches you’ve seen are not inaccurate, and the highway is often the best way to see the huge cities and National Parks. Petrol is cheap, and conditions are excellent — just watch the speed limits which are considerably lower than in Europe.

With this in mind, it’s essential you consult your GP or a travel clinic (which are located throughout the country) at least two months before you start your travels. Depending on your destination, inoculations may be necessary, but remember prevention is always better than cure.
7. Depending on how friendly your home country is with the one you intend to visit, you’ll need to satisfy certain visa requirements. This can cost you time, money and several pairs of shoes as you traipse around the embassies, so time is of the essence here. There are a number of visa assistance companies that will take the grief out of this whole process.

The eBay Addicts
Katie is sitting at her computer, eyes glued to the screen. It’s 2 am and the eBay auction is about to end. Within minutes the 25-year-old events manager from London will know if she has won another pair of Gucci shoes to add to her collection.
The scene may sound familiar. Indeed, eBay — the Internet auction site — has become a modern phenomenon, with 10 million British users, 135 million worldwide and up to 600,000 joining every month.
The other side-effects of her self-confessed addiction are far more alarming. Katie has spent so much of her substantial J50,000-a-year salary on eBay since discovering it in November that she is already J10,000 in debt.
It is not just her finances which are feeling the strain. Her health is also deteriorating under the stress of owing so much, and she has been to see her GP. What horrifies Katie even more is the fact that she can see her personality changing as a result of her addiction: she admits she is now prepared to lie to cover the extent of her problem.
Natalie, 27, from London, who works for a casting agency, also finds taking part in the eBay auctions and hunting for bargains addictive.
‘I admit that I am an addict and I probably do need professional help,’ she says. ‘Every day I wake up and say that today I am not going on eBay. But I can’t stop myself. It started as my stress-buster from work and now it’s the cause of my stress. The thrill of the auction is like a gambling rush.’
These young women are not isolated cases. David Nott, Addictions Programme Manager, is seeing an increasing number of patients with eBay addiction, which he says is a very real condition.
While shopaholism has been recognized as a problem for years, he believes eBay addiction is different because of the combination of shopping and gambling which makes it so compelling and potentially more addictive.
‘While a lot of people claim that the possibility of picking up a bargain is what attracts them to eBay, the single biggest thing that tends to keep them coming back is not what they buy, but how they buy it,’ he says. ‘The whole thing is geared around anticipation, winning and losing — it’s a very emotive process.’
He says eBay addiction should be treated as seriously as any other.
‘It is potentially life-destroying. While it doesn’t have the immediate health implications, it can lead to disrupted sleep, the same types of adrenaline highs and lows and obviously the overspending and consequent financial problems that this entails.’
A15 Why does the author in the second paragraph say that «the scene may sound familiar»? Because people taking part in the eBay auctions are:
1) a rare case
2) ordinary buyers
3) spread all over the world
4) decreasing in number
A16 People visiting eBay auctions are:
1) gamblers
2) addicts
3) shopaholics
4) lonely people
A17 According to the author what attracts people in eBay auctions?
1) the rush of excitement
2) anticipation, winning and losing
3) the need to by things
4) the possibility to pick up a bargain
A18 EBay addiction is different from shopaholism because:
1) there is no human interaction
2) it is a combination of shopping and gambling
3) it is more addictive
4) you buy things online
A19 David Nott says that the side effects of eBay addiction are:
1) destroyed relationship and stress
2) financial problems
3) deteriorating health and change of personality
4) adrenaline rush, disrupted sleep and financial problems
A20 EBay addiction according to David Nott should be treated seriously because:
1) you get hooked
2) it has immediate health implications
3) bidding is exciting
4) it may destroy your life
A21 Natalie thinks that her addiction:
1) is self-destructing
2) influences her relationship with parents
3) is the cause of her stress
4) is just a hobby

Speaker A
: We’ve had our dog, Fido, for two years now. My parents asked me which animal I’d like, and I said a dog. A dog was a good choice for us because we’ve got a big house and a fenced-in garden where he can play, and we all take turns walking him. Dogs need space and exercise. People who’ve got a small flat and not a lot of free time to spend with their pet should probably get a fish instead!
Speaker B
: Our cats, Leo, Tabs and Boo, certainly keep us entertained round the house. They love to play and sleep and they certainly perk up at mealtimes. But they have their own characters. Leo is super friendly and loves to sit on your lap. Tabs always runs away when you try to pick her up. And Boo is unpredictable – sometimes he loves you, and sometimes he doesn’t! I guess they’re like people in a way – no two are alike!
Speaker С
: I love having an aquarium. I’ve got two fish in it now. They don’t really have personalities, you know, although they get excited when I toss flakes of food in their tank. I started off with just one fish, then after six months, I decided it would be fun to get a second one, and they seem very happy together. They’re easy to look after – just give them some food and watch them swim!
Speaker D
: We’ve got a really cool parrot named Polly. Polly’s a great character, and she talks! What better pet could you have, right? Sadly, though, Polly wasn’t feeling well a few weeks ago. She stopped eating and wasn’t talking so much. Everyone who owns a pet must look after it, so we had to take her to a vet, who prescribed some medicine. She’s much improved now and back to her usual chatty self!
Speaker E
: Our local pet shop has got lots of different pets – rabbits and hamsters, birds and fish. I’m always tempted to buy another pet, but I know I mustn’t! But every time I go there, I pick up something for my dog, Gus. He loves having a new toy to chew on or chase round the house. I think about myself, you know. I love video games, but I can’t play the same one over and over again!
Speaker F
: When we were thinking of getting a pet, we had to consider where we would get one. The pet shop near my house has lots to choose from. But I get so sad when I think about all those animals that are out on the streets. So my parents and I decided that we would visit the city shelter and rescue a pet from there. And that’s how we got our dog Chester, who’s more than happy to live with us!

: Vicky, are you going to Helens fancy dress party on Saturday? You have to come, if only to see my outfit. I’m going as a gorilla rugby player!
Vicky
: That’ll be hilarious, Jason! I wasn’t sure if I was going to come, but I think you’ve helped me make up my mind. But I don’t know what to wear. I was thinking maybe a princess, but that seems a bit boring.
Jason
: No, that sounds great. If you came as a princess, you would wear loads of jewellery and a huge crown, right?
Vicky
: Hmm, I’m not keen on that idea, really. Where would I get all those things? I don’t want to spend a thousand pounds on an outfit.
Jason
: That’s a good point. Well, what about a celebrity? Maybe you could come as Lady Gaga. That should be easy to do, shouldn’t it? Just copy one of her looks.
Vicky
: No, I can’t do that. Lisa’s already going as Gaga. Besides, I think I’m way too tall to be her. She’d only come up to my chin if she were standing in front of me!

: What about a mermaid? You know, dress up like a fish! I think you’d look really good in that kind of outfit, and it can’t be that expensive, can it?
Vicky
: That sounds interesting, but how would I get round the party without falling over? It would be quite difficult to walk!
Jason
: Hmm, maybe you could wear a long green skirt and ask your mum to sew a fish tail on the bottom.
Vicky
: How creative! I’ve also got a funky green blouse and I can put some fake seashells all over it. I think we’re getting somewhere with this idea! Of course, I’ve got an exam in three days, so I can’t spend all my time making a mermaid costume.
Jason
: Hopefully it won’t take too long to make.
The party’s this weekend and today’s Monday. That’s plenty of time, don’t you think?
Vicky
: Well, my exams in maths, which I’m terrible at. I think I’ll have to wait until it’s over before I can do this costume. But at least I’ve got the idea.
Jason
: Well, good luck in your exam, and with the costume!
Vicky
: Thanks. See you at the party Jason!

Presenter
: Hi everyone and welcome to our programme, Awesome Job! Today we have John Stone with us to talk about his work in ecotourism. John, welcome to the show.
Speaker
: Thanks for having me.
Presenter
: Tell us some things about your job and what your company does.
Speaker
: I work as a tour guide for a company called Go Green Tourism. We specialise in tours to unique habitats with rich biodiversity. We organise very small tours, for maybe 20 people or less, so that the environment remains protected, and our destinations are mainly tropical regions in South America and most recently South-East Asia. We travel to our destination and stay at a local village near the habitat, which is where we eat and sleep. Then we go on a guided walking tour of a rainforest and we educate our travelling companions about the different flora and fauna of the area.
Presenter
: So you have to be well-trained in plant and animal sciences to give one of these tours, yes?
Speaker
: That’s right. Typically the tour guides have a degree in biology or botany, or a master’s in forest conservation, something like that. My specific educational background is in zoo management, but I saw an advert for this job and decided I wanted to give it a try. I’ve learned a great deal more about the natural environment through this work, which I’m happy about.
Presenter
: Is ecotourism safe for the environment, in your opinion?
Speaker
: We do our very best to ensure that any place we visit is left virtually untouched. Our ecotravellers must attend a seminar before we embark on our journey in order to learn the dos and don’ts of the trip. People who sign up for these tours are quite conscious of the environment to begin with.
Presenter
: Does your company participate in environment protection programmes?
Speaker
: I’m glad you asked that, because yes, we do. Part of our profits go to awareness programmes aimed at educating people about the rainforests and their value as a resource. Most people don’t realise that without rainforests, we wouldn’t be able to survive.
Presenter
: There is also the problem of rainforests being cut down, isn’t there?
Speaker
: Yes, we also provide funds for organisations that fight illegal logging and land clearing in Brazil. These organisations work with the Brazilian government and although it’s a continuous battle, they have made progress in recent years in protecting land.
Presenter
: That’s good to know. What sorts of things do people get to see in the rainforests, besides plants and animals of course?
Speaker
: Oh, many things. We visit dazzling waterfalls, and pristine lakes and rivers. We also visit the native peoples who live in or near the rainforests – the ones who are welcoming to visitors anyway! So there is also a cultural exchange that takes place between the ecotravellers and the locals. I’ve even picked up a few words of the locals’ languages, which is really cool. Of course, I’m a long way off being fluent!
Presenter
: And do you just visit rainforests?
Speaker
: Well, the company is only about eight years old, so the focus has been rainforest regions mainly in Brazil, but as I said before, we do visit South-East Asia, which we started doing a couple of years ago. But I’m excited to say that we are planning to expand our operations to regions in Africa, such as the Serengeti and Madagascar. Business has been booming for ecotourism, so hopefully that trend will continue, for us and for other environmentally-conscious organisations…
{mp3}b1{/mp3}
1) perfume, not a good present, reasons 2) present, create, memories 3) practical presents 4) present, good for everybody 5) perfume, the best present 6) present, a good way out, not always perfect 7) choosing a present, think, person’s lifestyle
- 1) скорее всего речь пойдет о причинах, по которым духи не могут быть хорошим подарком, ключевые слова на которых будет строиться высказывание: perfume, bad, not very good, awful, scent. 2) наверное, речь пойдет о каком-то совместном действии в качестве подарка, чтобы об этом остались воспоминания, ключевые слова: do together, memory, share, past 3) речь пойдет о практичных подарках, подарках для дома или хозяйства, ключевые слова: home, domestic, pragmatic, gifts 4) вероятно речь пойдет о подарке или подарках, которые подойдут любому человеку, ключевые слова any person(man), all, everybody 5) речь, видимо, пойдет о причинах, по которым духи являются наилучшим подарком по мнению говорящего, ключевые слова: excellent gift, best present, perfume 6) речь, скорее всего, пойдет о способе легко решить проблему с выбором подарка, ключевые слова: way out, easy to buy, choice 7) видимо говорящий будет убеждать, что при выборе подарка необходимо учитывать то, какой образ жизни ведет получатель этого подарка, ключевые слова: lifestyle, way of life, choose a gift
Отмечаем все возможные варианты: A) 6, 4 B) 3 C) 1,5 D) 6,4 E) 2 F) 7.
