Task 1.

1

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some

interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your

friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out

aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

There is an established stereotype among foreigners that Russia is a country of

eternal frost and snow-covered streets. This is all because for many years

foreigners have been frightened by the phrase «Russian winter». But it’s not all that

simple, Russia is a vast country and the weather in different areas can be

completely different. Russia consists of several continental zones For example, in

the north winters are long and harsh, in some places there is lots of snow and

temperatures fall below -40 degrees Celsius . These winters are normal, not only in

the northern regions of the country but even in the Far East. Summers in these

areas don’t even see three warm months out of the year

The closer you get to the south the warmer the Russian climate gets. In the central

part of the country summer becomes warm—even hot—which makes it possible for

a good harvest of grain, fruit and vegetables. Winters here are not extremely cold

and the average winter temperature does not fall below -15 degrees Celsius. By the

way, in Russia the real warmth does not start until the middle of April. And only at

the end of May does everything start to bloom and people go without their warm

clothing.

2

Task 2. Study the advertisement.

You are considering visiting the museum and now you’d like to get more

information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out the

following:

1) location of the museum

2) opening hours

3) admission fee

4) special exhibitions

5) discounts for students

photos. Choose one photo to present to your friend.

1

2

3

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more

than 2 minutes ( 12-15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

when you took the photo

what/who is in the photo

what is happening

why you took this photo

why you decided to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: «I’ve chosen photo number…»

Task 4. Study the twо phоtоgraphs. In 1.5 minutes be ready tо cоmpare and

4

cоntrast the phоtоgraphs:

give a brief description of the photos (action, location)

say what the pictures have in common

ствующей цифрой, только один раз. В задании есть одно лишнее утвер-

ждение. Вы услышите запись дважды. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. У

Вас есть 20 секунд, чтобы ознакомиться с заданием.

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

Learning Spanish let me be part of my best friend’s family and have friends in col-

lege from South America whom I may not have met had I not had such an interest

in learning Spanish. I like myself with these other people more than I like my

American self (if that makes sense). I have known a lot of people who learned an-

other language at the age of

19 and above who now speak their second language

almost without an accent but speak their first language with an accent!

Speaker B

Learning a foreign language always gives you a chance to compare the foreign

language and your mother tongue. In order to learn another language, you need to

learn the different titles and functions of sentence parts. Learning these things can

make you a better student and a more articulate person. Also, many of the root

words used in foreign vocabulary will help you later on as you struggle to compre-

hend or analyze new words in your native language. For instance, studying Latin in

high school taught me an incredible amount of English, because English has so

many words that come from Latin. The same is with Greek.

Speaker C

I know this might not make sense at first but hear me out. I know it’s not polite in

some situations. But if you and some of your friends learn a foreign language,

you’ll be able to talk to each other without other people having a clue what you’re

saying. This works best if you choose a language few people study, such as Japa-

nese. Avoid the Big Two (Spanish and French), because too many of us learned

them in high school. And you never know who has a German, Finnish, Italian, or

Greek grandmother!

Speaker D

Traveling is one of the great joys of life and also one of the most expensive. Why

not get the most out of your experience? As a person who doesn’t know the native

tongue you are completely excluded from the culture. The locals ignore you and all

that’s left for you is sightseeing and taking cheesy photos. Knowing even a few

phrases of the language will make a huge difference. You will meet many more

people and find it much easier to get around. People are much more welcoming if

you make an effort to speak their language. This can turn a frustrating experience

into the trip of a lifetime.

Speaker E

A language is what makes us human. It is the medium we use to share our thoughts

with the world. Could you imagine а thought without а language? A great language

also has a wonderful musical quality. Learning a new language is like learning a

new way to think and a new way to sing. I am often struck by new phrases that are

profoundly meaningful and melodic. At those moments I feel grateful to be alive.

Don’t sell yourself short by stubbornly ignoring every language but one.

Speaker F

Believe it or not, the majority of the world does not speak English. We are so iso-

lated that we hardly realize this. The truth is new thoughts and ideas are happening

everywhere and they are not being immediately translated. The world is getting

smaller and we are coming into contact with more non-English speakers all the

time. Gain an advantage for yourself in business and personal relationships by be-

ing able to communicate with people in their language. This will set you apart and

gain you immediate respect and credibility.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. ( Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

(Pause 15 seconds.)

Now we are ready to start.

John: Hello, Maggie. What are you buying?

Maggie: I’m choosing a dress to begin with. What do you think about this one?

John: Ooh, it’s a gorgeous dress, Maggie, but the other one seems nicer.

Maggie: Mmm, it’s lovely, isn’t it? But you’re right, the blue dress looks better.

And I’m going to buy it.

John: Remember to take the receipt. Last year I couldn’t return a jumper because

I didn’t have a receipt.

Maggie: What was wrong with the jumper?

John: Nothing except the colour, the shape and the size. It was a present from

Mum. Every Christmas she gives me a dreadful jumper, but I can’t explain to her

that I don’t need it because I don’t want to hurt her feelings.

Maggie: That’s why I always buy clothes myself.

John: Can we go and look at the computer games now?

Maggie: OK, Johnny, you are very patient. Let’s just have a look at shoes and then

we can go to the electronics shop. I want to buy a camera for my brother. So what

are you doing at Christmas John? You’ve got a few days off work, haven’t you?

John: Indeed I have, Maggie, and I’m going to Poland for a few days. I’m looking

forward to a nice cosy Christmas. Fancy joining me?

Maggie: I’ve already been invited, but thank you. Tim and I had quite a long chat

the other day. It’d be nice to see him but I’ve already made plans. I’m spending

Christmas with my Mom and Dad.

John: Yeah, you’ll have a family Christmas. I expect we’re feeling peckish, so

we’ll have a quick bite to eat before going home.

Maggie: OK, let’s go.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. ( Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

(Pause 15 seconds.)

Now we are ready to start.

Presenter: Good morning. Today we’ve got Susan B. Anderson, a popular knit-

wear designer and the author of some famous books. She’s also a blogger with a

well-organized legion of fans . Enjoy. Hello, Susan. Nice to meet you.

Susan: Hello. Nice to meet you too.

Presenter: Did you always want to be a fashion designer?

Susan: Both of my Grandmothers were fashion designers, but I didn’t really

know that until I started college! One had her own label and the other worked as a

Womenswear Designer for a fashion house in Dublin. For as long as I can remem-

ber I was always interested in fashion and started to modify my clothes from a very

young age. My mother taught me to knit when I was six. Definitely, I thought

about other occupations such as being an architect, but as soon as I knitted the first

dress from just a ball of wool, I knew knitting was my calling in life!

Presenter: Where did you study?

Susan: When I was in high school I took a tech theater class where my professor,

after seeing me create patterns without formal background, introduced me to the

idea that I could study and in fact work in fashion. None of my guidance counse-

lors knew about schools or careers in fashion at that time so I turned to the Inter-

net, I found summer programmes and developed a portfolio that got me into the

Fashion Institute of Technology.

Presenter:

Could you talk us through

your

fashion

CV?

Susan: Last year I worked on my own label and launched my first collection,

Spring Summer 2014, at NY Profile during New York Fashion Week, where I

picked up the ‘Best Womenswear Designer’ award. I also took my collection to

Tokyo, where I had a fashion show and exhibition. Just recently I had my debut

show at London Fashion Week, showing my A/W 09 collection at Vauxhall Fash-

ion Scout.

Presenter: It is really gorgeous. What inspired your A/W 09 collection?

Susan: My trip to Tokyo 2 years ago where I met Japanese designers and was

introduced to Japanese culture- I was amazed by the bold architecture and the con-

trast of delicate patterns, often found on the facades. My aim was to create a col-

lection which was both modern and bold, yet sophisticated.

Presenter: How do you describe your style?

Susan: Simple, but funky. I like unexpected colors or interesting patterns and with

a little Rock n’ Roll or vintage decor nod.

Presenter: Any new projects in the works?

Susan : Yup! I’m currently writing my seventh book (but first one for Chronicle

Books), which will focus on projects using intermediate knitting skills. I’m work-

ing on my new collection but it’s a secret.

Presenter: What’s your favorite part of blogging?

Susan: My favorite part of blogging is the interaction I have with the readers.

I have had so many mothers and grandmothers send me photos of their new babies

and children . I have had e-mails and comments from people with elderly or sick

family members who have knitted a toy to brighten their days I have heard from

countless charities all doing so much good in the world through knitting. I also get

to hear from new and experienced knitters who are inspired to try something new

because they saw it on the blog. It’s the heartwarming stories big and small, and the

words of appreciation and encouragement that make blogging so worthwhile.

I have fun with it and I always look forward to posting a new entry.

Presenter: Thanks, Susan, for taking the time to talk.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. ( Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

Keeping viewers glued to a TV set 8. The appearance of TV advertising

A.

For about seventy years TV has been used as a vehicle for advertising in

some countries . Since the late 1940s, television commercials have become

far and away the most effective and most popular method of selling products

of all sorts. The radio advertising industry was well-established when

television made its debut in the 1940s, and television was developed as a

commercial medium, based upon the successful format of the radio.

B.

In the earliest days of television, it was often difficult to understand whether

you watch actual television programmes or commercials. Many of the earliest

television shows were sponsored by single companies, who inserted their

names and products into the shows as much as possible. For example, Texaco

employees appeared during the show to perform while the Texaco musical

logo would play in the background.

C.

Another important milestone came in the 1960s with the introduction of very

short commercial breaks during a TV show. Now it was possible for several

companies to use a popular programme as an advertising platform together. It

was one of the most efficient ways of marketing, and companies like Tide and

Crest took it as an opportunity to expand their ad campaigns.

D.

In the 1970s, the broadcast of television advertisements which promoted

cigarettes was banned by the administration. This resulted in a conflict

between the government and television networks, as for them these ads

constituted a significant portion of the total revenue. The period between the

1970s and the 1990s was marked by the increase of the time of commercial

breaks from 9 to 19 minutes or the debut of celebrities advertising brand

products.

E.

Today the vast majority of television commercials consist of brief advertising

spots, ranging in length from a few seconds to several minutes. Commercials

of this sort have been used to sell literally every product imaginable over the

years, from household products to goods and services, to political campaigns.

It

is

considered

impossible

for

a politician to

wage a

successful election campaign without airing a good television commercial.

F.

The brief commercial «breaks» that interrupt shows regularly are the primary

reason for the existence of modern-day television networks.

The

programming is intended to capture the attention of the audience so that they

will not want to change the channel; instead, they will (hopefully) watch the

commercials while waiting for the next segment of the show. Entire industries

exist that focus solely on the task of keeping the viewing audience interested

enough to sit through commercials.

G.

The TV commercial is generally considered the most effective mass-market

advertising format, and this is reflected by the high prices TV networks

charge for commercial airt me during popular TV events. The ratings systems

determine how successful television shows are, so that they can decide what

rates to charge advertisers for their commercial airtime. For example, a single

thirty-second TV spot in prime time may cost up to $2 million.

Why The English Love Drinking Tea

Ever since the 18th century, tea time has been an integral part of English life.

People from other countries have a set idea of what English tea time means: smart

dresses, delicate finger foods, and hot tea all served on the best china.

This is not a passion that England shares with most of the rest of the world,

where coffee is almost universally more popular than tea. In fact, the per capita

consumption of tea in the United Kingdom is 12.85kg per year, which is almost

three times as much as in Morocco which comes in second place at 4.34kg per

year. This per capita consumption is even higher if you looked at England (one of

4 countries in the United Kingdom) on its own. Perhaps surprisingly, in Japan the

popularity of tea has been suffering a slight decline since the start of the new

millennium.

During the early 1700s the British East India Company began growing tea in

the newly conquered Indian territories on an industrial scale using cheap labour

and conquered land. The massive scale of tea production in India, the majority of

which was sent straight to England, sent the price of tea plummeting. Suddenly,

what was once a rare treat for the wealthy became an affordable product which

ordinary British people could enjoy on a regular basis. Not only that, but sugar was

just starting to become more affordable for ordinary people as well. As a result of

this, tea became a powerful symbol of the benefits of Empire for the ordinary

English citizen.

It is one thing to understand why the English first started drinking so much

tea, but that doesn’t really explain why we continue to do so some 300 years later.

My own personal opinion is that one of the biggest reasons behind our continuing

love affair with tea is because we find tea comforting. Its familiarity is like a cosy

comfort blanket to us, and the long tradition of tea drinking provides a calming

ritual with which to punctuate the day.

At times of stress, grief or hardship it is not uncommon for the first

response of an English person to be ‘making a nice cup of tea’. The sheer

familiarity of the ritual serves to centre you, diminishing the pressing concerns of

the moment by making them seem small in comparison to such a long and often

repeated tradition.

Being an Englishman, I prefer drinking tea with milk. Debate continues

whether to put milk in the cup before or after pouring tea. Originally milk was

always added before tea to prevent hot tea from cracking the fine bone china cups.

Tea experts agree with this tradition but also state that tea needs to be left in the

water on its own for the flavour and colour to develop and a splash of milk should

be added later.

Tea itself seems to have calming properties, and it most certainly has a range

of proven and suspected health benefits. Although many English people actually

drink more tea than is strictly good for them, it cannot be denied that in moderate

quantities (4 cups per day is usually said to be ideal) tea drinking has a remarkable

range of health benefits. Studies have shown that drinking three to four cups of tea

per day reduces your risk of having a heart attack, as well as protecting you from

a range of degenerative heart conditions. Although the link has not yet been fully

proven, several studies have suggested that tea drinking may help to prevent

a range of different kinds of cancer, including lung cancer.

стяжённые (краткие) формы can’t, didn’t, isn’t, I’m и т. п. считаются как

одно слово;

числительные, выраженные цифрами, т. е. 1, 25, 2009, 126 204 и т. п.,

считаются как одно слово;

числительные, выраженные цифрами, вместе с условным обозначением

процентов, т. е. 25%, 100% и т. п., считаются как одно слово;

числительные, выраженные словами, считаются как слова;

сложные слова, такие как good-looking, well-bred, English-speaking,

Задание 1

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

Monarchy sounds pretty cool… a King, Queen, Prince or Princess, royal ceremonies and weddings. But when it comes to making important decisions, the fate of the country is left to chance. Monarchy is having one person with absolute power and that person can overrule any decision! Is it fair if your family has worked hard for three generations and then someone comes in and takes away everything you have? If you have a bad king or queen, you are in big trouble for a long time because you can’t vote out a monarch.

Speaker B

Who needs democracy nowadays? The politicians misuse the rights given to them. On the contrary, monarchy, if used right, could be very effective. It works very well because the monarch can really get things done as he has no congress or parliament to convince to do things his way. The monarch acts like a president, but he has years of experience to add to the role of government adviser, having worked with many political parties over the years. My country is ruled by the monarchy. The Prince and Princess are nice people and they’ve done a lot for our country.

Speaker C

In reality, there are a lot of people who feel that monarchy is an expensive anachronism. In the UK, the monarchy is not nearly as costly to the taxpayers as some people think it is. They make far more money for Great Britain than they receive. The tourist trade became huge in the last century; much of it made from the Royalty. The Royals also raise enormous amounts of money for charities by being patrons of them. Besides, we do not have to elect a president, and this alone saves a lot of money. I’m sure Britain would be far less well-off as a republic.

Speaker D

The monarchy is thousands of years old and it is steeped in tradition. One can say that monarchy is a bit outdated but it does have lots of advantages. Firstly, it attracts plenty of tourists, who love visiting Britain because of its rich cultural and historic heritage, which is mostly due to the Royals. Everyone loves the Royals and they want to see Buckingham palace. Did you see how many people were present at the wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate? Abolishing the monarchy would be the same as knocking down the Tower of London.

Speaker E

The most well organized nations in Europe are all monarchies. I don’t think this is a coincidence. I think having a neutral monarch provides strength and unity in the country. The monarch provides a sense of continuity in times of political and social change. While political parties change constantly, the sovereign continues as Head of State, providing a stable framework within which a government can introduce wide-ranging reforms. And at least one part of the government is always there. Elected parties come and go, but the monarch is always there to ensure that the elected government is put in place.

Speaker F

I would say most of us are a bit indifferent in our opinions on monarchy. Having never lived under a monarchy, we mostly don’t have sufficient experience to really know what it’s like to be under a monarch. However, I can’t see any significant difference between a monarchy and a republic. Most of the western European republics are almost no different in constitution from monarchy, except that they have a president instead of a king or queen to do formal stuff like summoning and dissolving Parliament, calling elections, and appointing the Prime Minister. So from a governmental point of view, there’s absolutely no benefit.

Задание 2

Now we are ready to start.

Kate: Hi, Pete — I just wondered if you fancied coming out for a coffee.
Pete: Oh, I was just writing a letter.
Kate: Writing a letter! Is your phone out of order?
Pete: No… well, not exactly a letter. Ben’s applied for a job at a children’s summer camp, and they’ve asked me for a character reference. He must have put me down as one of his referees.
Kate: Oh dear — you’re not going to tell them the truth, are you?
Pete: What do you mean?
Kate: Well, that he’s a big-headed show-off who goes out every night and never does a day’s work.
Pete: Oh, come on, he’s not that bad — I mean, kids love him. Do you remember the birthday party that he arranged for his little brother last month? It was really fantastic! And he always entertains his brother’s friends with his magic tricks and silly jokes.
Kate: Oh yes, he’s great with children — but he’s a big kid himself, isn’t he?
Pete: Yes, I suppose he is a bit immature. You never know what he is up to.
Kate: And I hope they don’t expect him to work before four o’clock in the afternoon. You know what he’s like — he needs a bomb under him to get him up in the morning.
Pete: That’s right. He’s always late in the morning.
Kate: Also, he hates taking orders from anybody. Do you remember that job he had last summer in a restaurant? He ended up throwing a bucket of water over the chef when she asked him to wash the kitchen floor.
Pete: Oh no, don’t remind me. He won’t do anything he doesn’t enjoy, will he? Mind you, he did run that restaurant single-handed when the chef and two of the waiters were off sick with food poisoning.
Kate: That’s true. He’s good in a crisis. But having said that, he’s good at causing a crisis as well I mean, you know the food poisoning was his fault, don’t you?
Pete: Oh, yes — oh dear, this isn’t helping. Yet I think he could…
Kate: Hey, do you think he’s still got blue hair?
Pete: Well, his appearance is rather strange but kids find it rather attractive, Come on. Let’s go and get that coffee.

Задание 3

Now we are ready to start.

Question: Doctor Dibb, what is ARCTAS?

Answer: ARCTAS stands for the Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites. It is part of the activities that are going on under the umbrella of the International Polar Year about every 40 or 50 years. 2008 and 2009 are two of those years when this is occurring after the last ones were in the 50’s. This is the time when the international community comes together and focuses on polar aspects.

Question: Why should we study the Arctic?

Answer: It’s generally a very clean region because nobody or very few people actually live there, but there’s a lot of pollution that is imported into those areas and transported there. So our main goal is to see how it is getting transported, where it is coming from and what impact it might have on the regional climate in the arctic region.

Question: Why don’t you use satellites to get this data?

Answer: The satellites do a good job of staying there for several years so they do provide us a longterm view of things. They also cover a lot of territory so they are more global in nature, but they don’t do a very good job in terms of the details. They don’t measure a lot of things that we need to know in order to understand the system, in order to be able to model it and to forecast or predict the changes in the future. So a lot of detailed observations we will be doing using airborne platforms are really not possible from satellites. But there is a second aspect. Things that are measurable from satellites require a lot of validation, because a satellite is really an indirect measure of things.

Question: How does this study relate to climate change?

Answer: Given the recent loss of Arctic ice in 2007, which was unprecedented, this is a fortuitous time for us to be here looking at climate change in the Arctic. We’re particularly interested in the atmospheric contribution to that so in the spring we’re looking at what is traditionally been described as Arctic haze. Besides, this Arctic haze has components that come from pollution transport from mid-latitude locations such as North America, Europe and Siberia.

Question: So, are you looking at how carbon dioxide is related to climate change?

Answer: We’re not only looking at carbon dioxide, which is the most recognizable greenhouse gas, but also at methane, and CFC’s and ozone, even more importantly. Ozone is a greenhouse gas that’s not emitted by pollution but is created by the chemistry of pollutants as they’re transported to the Arctic. Trying to understand those things is an important part of this campaign.

Question: What recent changes in the Arctic have made the ARCTAS mission really important?

Answer: One of the things that has been of great interest in the last few years is why the snow and ice are now. melting earlier in the year and freezing up later and, clearly, the air is a little warmer. There’s also speculation that the dirt and the black carbon that is in the Arctic haze that’s deposited just as the sun is coming up may actually change the reflection of the snow and hasten the melt season. So where is this black carbon coming from? Is it increasing or decreasing over time? And does it have a measurable effect on the reflection of the white surface as we come out of the winter in the Arctic? These questions are a major motivation behind ARCTAS.

Question: What is your field of study and how does it relate to the ARCTAS mission?

Answer: We have a lot of similar issues, like where the air comes from that gets to a place like Greenland and how it gets out of the atmosphere, and onto the ground. Recently we’ve discovered that there’s very active processing of the snow. When the sun shines on the snow, a lot of complicated chemistry happens that nobody knew about 10 years ago. I’m actually studying snow and air samples in Greenland to better understand ice core analyses that have been done by other folks in our group and in other areas of the world.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.)

This is the end of the Listening Test.

10. Установите соответствие между заголовками 1-8 и текстами A-G. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

1) Foreign Food
2) Diet Dangers
3) Changing Habits
4) Eating Out

5) Plan Your Diet Carefully
6) Popular but Useless
7) Food Safety
8) Eating Together

A. A quick look at junk food facts tells us junk food and diets do not go hand in hand. Junk foods are also called ‘empty calorie’ foods and have no nutritional value. Nevertheless, they are enjoyed by lots of people because of their simplicity to manufacture, consume and, of course, their taste. Chocolates, burgers, pizzas, potato wafers and fries will surely find their way into everyone’s heart.

B. Thai cuisine is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. In fact, several Thai dishes, such as Tom Yum Soup, are currently under scientific study for their incredible health benefits. Of course, it’s already known that many of the fresh herbs and spices used in Thai cooking — such as turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, and fresh chillies have immune-boosting and disease-fighting power.

C. Vegetarian diets can be very healthy, but eating a balanced diet when you are vegetarian usually requires a little extra attention. Because vegetarians eliminate certain foods from their diets, they often need to work to add foods into their diet that will provide the nutrients found in meat products. If properly planned, vegetarian diets can provide all the nutrients you need.

D. It’s actually easy to make good choices at a fast-food restaurant or the cafeteria. Most cafeterias and fast-food places offer healthy choices that are also tasty, like grilled chicken or salads. Be mindful of portion sizes and high fat add-ons, like dressings, sauces or cheese. Most restaurant portions are larger than the average serving of food at home. Ask for half portions or take half of your dish home.

E. Family meals are making a comeback. Shared family meals are more likely to be nutritious, and kids who eat regularly with their families are less likely to snack on unhealthy foods and more likely to eat fruits and vegetables. Teens who take part in regular family meals are less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs. Beyond health and nutrition, family meals provide a valuable opportunity to reconnect.

F. Families are cooking more meals at home, cutting back on take away in the face of the economic downturn. In addition to cutting back on take away and eating out, families have begun cooking more vegetarian meals and are adding vegetables, lentils and baked beans to allow them to cut back on meat quantity. Consumers also indicate that they are likely to prepare meals that can be spread across more than one mealtime.

G. In recent years it has become common practice for celebrities and stars to publicize food products. Businesses take advantage of consumers’ mentality of ‘following the stars’ and invite celebrities and stars to perform ‘false advertising’ so as to mislead or even deceive consumers. The law stipulates that those who publicize ‘faulty food products’ will share responsibility with food producers and sellers.

When you mention the name ‘Hovercraft’ most people think of a helicopter. If someone sees one from the river bank, the term ‘airboat’ comes to their mind because most people are not quite sure A___________. Few people know of the personal sized hovercraft B___________.

A hovercraft is a vehicle, designed to travel over any smooth surface. Hovercraft are unique among all forms of transportation in their ability to travel equally well over land, ice, and water C___________. That is why they are used throughout the world as a means of specialized transport D___________. Hovercraft can be powered by one or more engines. The engine drives the fan, which is responsible for creating high pressure air. The air inflates the ‘skirt’ under the vehicle, causing it to rise above the ground.

The Hovercraft Museum, located in Hampshire, houses the world’s largest library of documents, publications, photographs and drawings on hovercraft, E___________. The museum also contains a large collection of original manufacturer’s hovercraft models including the world’s first working hovercraft model built by Christopher Cockerell.

Cockerell’s idea was to build a vehicle floating on a layer of air, F___________. To test his hypothesis, he put one smaller can inside a larger can and used a hairdryer to blow air into them. Christopher Cockerell was knighted for his achievement in 1969.

Hovercraft have now become much larger, more efficient and are in widespread use all over the world.

As Andrea turned off the motorway onto the road to Brockbourne, the small village in which she lived, it was four o’clock in the afternoon, but already the sun was falling behind the hills. At this time in December, it would be completely dark by five o’clock.

Andrea shivered. The interior of the car was not cold, but the trees bending in the harsh wind and the patches of yesterday’s snow still heaped in the fields made her feel chilly inside. It was another ten miles to the cottage where she lived with her husband Michael, and the dim light and wintry weather made her feel a little lonely.

She was just coming out of the little village of Mickley when she saw an old lady, standing by the road, with a crude hand-written sign saying ‘Brockbourne’ in her hand.

Andrea was surprised. She had never seen an old lady hitchhiking before. However, the weather and the coming darkness made her feel sorry for the lady, waiting hopefully on a country road like this with little traffic. Normally, Andrea would never pick up a hitchhiker when she was alone, thinking it was too dangerous, but what was the harm in doing a favor for a little old lady like this? Andrea pulled up a little way down the road, and the lady, holding a big shopping bag, hurried over to climb in the door which Andrea had opened for her.

When she did get in, Andrea could see that she was not, in fact, so little. Broad and fat, the old lady had some difficulty climbing in through the car door, with her big bag, and when she had got in, she more than filled the seat next to Andrea. She wore a long, shabby old dress, and she had a yellow hat pulled down low over her eyes. Panting noisily from her effort, she pushed her big brown canvas shopping bag down onto the floor under her feet, and said in a voice which was almost a whisper, ‘Thank you dearie. I’m just going to Brockbourne.’

‘Do you live there?’ asked Andrea, thinking that she had never seen the old lady in the village in the four years she had lived there herself. ‘No, dearie, ’ answered the passenger, in her soft voice, ‘I’m just going to visit a friend. He was supposed to meet me back there at Mickley, but his car won’t start, so I decided to hitchhike. I knew some kind soul would give me a lift.’

Something in the way the lady spoke, and the way she never turned her head, but stared continuously into the darkness ahead from under her old yellow hat, made Andrea uneasy about this strange hitchhiker. She didn’t know why, but she felt instinctively that there was something wrong, something odd, something … dangerous. But how could an old lady be dangerous? It was absurd. Careful not to turn her head, Andrea looked sideways at her passenger. She studied the hat, the dirty collar of the dress, the shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs… Thick black hairs? Hairy arms? Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a woman. It was a man.

At first, she didn’t know what to do. Then suddenly, an idea came into her terrified brain. Swinging the wheel suddenly, she threw the car into a skid, and brought it toa halt. ‘My God!’ she shouted, ‘A child! Did you see the child? I think I hit her!’ The ‘old lady’ was clearly shaken by the sudden skid. ‘I didn’t see anything dearie, ’ she said. ‘I don’t think you hit anything.’ ‘I’m sure it was a child!’ insisted Andrea. ‘Could you just get out and have a look? Just see if there’s anything on the road?’ She held her breath. Would her plan work?

It did. The passenger slowly opened the car door, leaving her bag inside, and climbed out to investigate. As soon as she was out of the vehicle, Andrea gunned the engine and soon she had put a good three miles between herself and the awful hitchhiker.

It was only then that she thought about the bag lying on the floor in front of her.Maybe the bag would provide some information about the real identity of the old woman who was actually not an old woman. Pulling into the side of the road, Andrea lifted the heavy bag onto her lap and opened it curiously. It contained only one item — a small hand axe, with a razor-sharp blade. The axe, and the inside of the bag, were covered with the dark red stains of dried blood. Andrea began to scream.

Before my many years’ service in a restaurant, I attended a top science university. The year was 2023 and I was finishing the project that would win me my professorship. In the end, it resulted in my becoming a kitchen employee.

My forty-second birthday had made a lonely visit the week before, and I was once again by myself in the flat. Like countless other mornings, I ordered a bagel from the toaster. ‘Yes, sir!’ it replied with robotic relish, and I began the day’s work on the project. It was a magnificent machine capable of transferring the minds of any two beings into each other’s bodies.

As the toaster began serving my bagel on to a plate, I realised the project was in fact ready for testing. I retrieved the duck and the cat — which I had bought for this purpose — from their containers, and set about calibrating the machine in their direction. Once ready, I leant against the table, holding the bagel I was too excited to eat, and initiated the transfer sequence. As expected, the machine whirred and hummed into action, my nerves tingling at its synthetic sounds.

The machine hushed, extraction and injection nozzles poised, scrutinizing its targets. The cat, though, was suddenly gripped by terrible alarm. The brute leapt into the air, flinging itself onto the machine. I watched in horror as the nozzles swung towards me; and, with a terrible, psychedelic whirl of colours, felt my mind wrenched from its sockets.

When I awoke, moments later, I noticed first that I was two feet shorter. Then, I realised the lack of my limbs, and finally it occurred to me that I was a toaster. I saw immediately the solution to the situation — the machine could easily reverse the transfer — but was then struck by my utter inability to carry this out.

After some consideration, using what I supposed must be the toaster’s onboard computer, I devised a strategy for rescue. Through the device’s rudimentary eye — with which it served its creations — I could see the internal telephone on the wall. Aiming carefully, I began propelling slices of bread at it. ‘Certainly, sir. There’s a burst water pipe on the floor above, I suppose I’ll kill two birds with one stone and sort you out on the way.’ The clerk arrived promptly, leaving his ‘caution, wet floor’ sign in the corridor. I spoke immediately, saying I was on the intercom, and requested that he simply press the large button on the machine before him. ‘This one, sir?’ he asked, and before I could correct him, the room was filled with a terrible, whirling light, and he fell to the ground.

A minute later he stood up again, uncertainly, and began moving in a manner that can only be described as a waddle. The duck, meanwhile, was scrutinising the flat with an air of wearied distaste. I gazed at the scene with dismay. Suddenly an idea struck the clerk, and with avian glee he tottered towards the window. I spluttered a horrified warning to no avail. He leapt triumphantly from the balcony, spread his ‘wings’ and disappeared. I would have wept, but managed only to eject a few crumbs.

Determined not to give up hope, I began to burn clumsy messages into slices of bread, and slung these desperate distress calls through the window. I sought not only my own salvation, but also to account for the bizarre demise of the clerk, who must no doubt have been discovered on the street below. I soon found my bread bin to be empty, and sank again into a morose meditation.

A large movement shocked me from my morbid contemplation. Before me, having clambered up from the floor, stood my own body. It regarded me with dim cheer. ‘I have been upgraded,’ it announced in monotone. The room was silent as I struggled to cope with this information. Then: ‘Would you like some toast?’

The truth dawned on me, and I wasted no time in seeing the utility of this revelation. I informed the toaster, which was now in control of my body, that I wished it to fetch help. It regarded me warily, then asked if I would like that buttered. Maintaining patience, I explained the instruction more thoroughly. I watched with surreal anticipation as my body of forty-two years jerked its way out of the flat. It rounded the corner, and there was a hope-dashing crash. It had tripped up on the ‘caution: wet floor’ sign. To my joyous relief, however, I heard the thing continue on its way down the corridor.

Minutes passed, then hours. On the dawn of the third day, I concluded that the toaster had failed in its piloting of my body, and that help was not on its way. Pushed on by a grim fervour, I began igniting the entire stock of bread. As the —– poured from my casing, and the first hints of deadly flame flickered in my mechanisms, I began the solemn disclosure of my own eulogy. Suddenly the fire alarm leapt into action, hurling thick jets of water across the flat, desperate to save its occupants. A piercing wail erupted from all sides, and a squabbling mixture of annoyance, relief and curiosity filtered into my mind.

Once the firemen had visited and deactivated the alarm, I was identified as the fault, unplugged and hauled away to a repair shop. The staff there, finding nothing to remove but a faulty speech chip, apparently put me up for sale. I only know this because, on being reconnected to the mains, I found myself in a shiny, spacious kitchen. Missing my electronic voice, I could only listen to the conversation of the staff, discussing the odd conduct of their new cook. The end of their hurried discussion heralded his arrival. I gazed at the door in silent surrender, as my body stepped proudly on to the premises, displaying its newly designed menu. At the top of the list I could discern ‘Buttered bagel’.
