Speaker 1

I love reading. I read detective and spy stories, novels, and romantic and fantasy stories. If I’m stuck on a train or waiting for something and don’t have anything to read, I feel terrible. So something that I spend a lot of money on would probably be books. I always buy a lot of books, magazines and reader’s digests. And I keep all of them at home – my mum says it’s horrible. Also lots of my money goes on audio books. I always share them with friends. Em … it’s kind of an exchange.

Speaker 2

Oh, you know, shiny things really attract me. Every time I have some extra money, I buy bracelets, rings, earrings or necklaces. I wear them everywhere and every day. If I’m shopping somewhere and there is something flashy shining at me, I usually stop and look and very often a salesperson can talk me into buying it. It’s crazy I know. I also love buying books but I don’t spend so much on them.

Speaker 3

Ah, I spend money mostly on um … going out, like going to restaurants or clubs, and things like that. I am a party person, I love hanging out with friends. I don’t actually buy a lot of things, like electronics, books or CDs. I just spend money on going out with my friends, on food and drinks for parties. I really love chatting, dancing and making jokes.

Speaker 4

Something I probably spend too much on is clothes. I guess because I am a girl, I think of shopping as a fun pastime and I find it relaxing. Actually I call it “shopping therapy” to go and buy some new clothes. I often go alone – I don’t need anyone to advise me. I’d say I love the process of choosing and buying things. It really makes me feel good.

Speaker 5

If I had the money I wanted, I would like to go and spend two weeks at every famous place on Earth. I love traveling in comfort. Nowadays it’s very expensive. I read travel magazines and surf the Internet for information about different tours, hotels and sights – and now I know how I want to travel. That’s what I’d spend my money on if I could.

Speaker 6
I usually don’t spend that much money on anything like jewellery or clothes. But then if there is one big expense, it is food. I like desserts, especially ice cream, so when I go out for dinner I definitely have a dessert afterwards. I can’t live without cakes, candies, chocolates and things like that. Who can?

Receptionist: English Language Center. How may I help you?

Caller: Yes. I’ve heard about your centre from my classmate and I’m calling to find out more information about your program. What kind of courses do you offer?

Receptionist: Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities for students who would like to master basic language skills, let’s say, for his or her job, or to study intensively to enter a US college or university.

Caller: Okay. I’m calling for a friend who is interested in attending a US university. Can my friend apply for the next semester?

Receptionist: Well, we start in March and always ask applicants to apply no later than two months before the semester begins.

Caller: Alright. What is the tuition fee for a full-time student?

Receptionist: It’s two thousand and thirty dollars.

Caller: And how does one apply?

Receptionist: Well, we can send you an application and you can mail it back to us, or you can fill out the application form that’s on our website.

Caller: And are there other materials I would need to send in addition to the application form?

Receptionist: Uh, yes. You would need to send in a sponsorship form indicating who will be responsible financially for the student while studying in our program, and a bank statement showing that you or your sponsor has enough money to cover tuition expenses and living costs.

Caller: And how can I send these materials to you?

Receptionist: You can either send the application packet by regular mail or you can fax it.

Caller: Alright. I think that’s about it.

Receptionist: Okay great

Caller: Oh and what is your name?

Receptionist: Ok. My name is Tony Nelson. You can just call and ask for me.

Caller: Great. Thank you for your help.

Receptionist: No problem and please don’t hesitate to call again if you have any other questions.

Now we are ready to start.

Int: Today in the studio we are talking to Ben Zephani, an activist and member of the environmental group the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. Welcome Ben.

Ben: Thank you.

Int: Well, you know, people nowadays talk a lot about environmental issues. There is great concern about wildlife and the future of the National Parks in Kenya. What’s happening there?

Ben: One of the most serious environmental problems we are facing today is deforestation, which really affects both wildlife and people living around the forests. People need land for their own purposes, like growing crops and raising cattle. So they come, seize pieces of land, cut down trees and start cultivating the land. So many animals were, kind of, forced away. They had to leave their native habitats and find new hunting areas… That’s not really a nice thing.

Int: And what’s happening to the people who actually live around the forest area?

Ben: You know when you tend to interfere in a wild animal’s habitat you somehow create an imbalance between people and animals. And sometimes it’s not really a nice thing because animals tend to come close to where people live, which is really threatening.

Int: So, do they attack people?

Ben: Not that they really attack settlements but they do come in packs, groups, prides or herds constantly migrating from one place to another because of deforestation. So people are vulnerable at any time.

Int: You mean, if I lived there, I could be chased by an angry rhinoceros or an elephant?

Ben: No, actually they don’t chase people because most of the time they just pass by. But at times you come into contact with an unusual animal. You know animals live in packs, so when one animal is rejected from its pack, it’s an angry animal. It cannot join the other packs so it attacks anything and is extremely dangerous. It should not be disturbed. People can do nothing to help it. Anyone who dares to approach it is almost certainly doomed.

Int: Wow! Sounds horrible! I suppose no one would dare to try to catch these wild animals … Well, but what actually causes deforestation?

Ben: People burn wood to produce charcoal and sell it, because, as you know, people there have very poor living conditions, and they try hard to earn an extra dime to support their families. Charcoal is in great demand for cooking and other odd jobs, so people don’t even have to travel anywhere to sell it. It’s a good job. But it’s so destructive.

Int: So what’s being done to try and remedy this, or to try and counterbalance the effect?

Ben: There are three or four large activist groups that are coming together to discuss how to reduce damage to the environment. You all know the Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai who is a leader of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. She’s been trying to discourage people from destroying forests for a long time and to explain what deforestation does to the country and the environment in general and how it affects people in the forest areas. She teaches people to adjust to new conditions and environments. She moves with the times. Wangari supports National parks, conservation areas and safari parks in the country. She helps organize small businesses to learn to earn from ecotourism in the forest areas.

Int: Look, I’ve always wanted to go to Africa and I’m just wondering, if that whole safari business … is really good; if everything you see on the BBC Wildlife channel, you know, documentaries, is true to life.

Ben: It’s not a cliché, but it’s something you have to experience when you get there on safari. The BBC has never lied to their viewers.

Int: Wow! So I could be just out there … driving around in my car and on my own just seeing all those animals?

Ben: I am afraid they won’t let you drive in your own car. They provide services for you. We have in Kenya an institute called the KWS: the Kenya Wildlife Service and it has its own wardens that are highly trained to protect you when you’re in the forest. You just say where and when you want to go, what places and animals you would like to see. Tours are kind of regulated. For example, you will never be allowed to come close to feeding the animals.

Int: All right.

2) Risky sport

3) Shopping in comfort

4) Difficult task

5) Professional sport

6) Shopping from home

7) New users

8) Digging for the past

A) A group of university students from Brazil have been given the job of discovering and locating all the waterfalls in their country. It is not easy because very often the maps are not detailed. The students have to remain in water for long periods of time. Every day they cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers through the jungle, each carrying 40 kilos of equipment.

B) For many years now, mail-order shopping has served the needs of a certain kind of customers. Everything they order from a catalogue is delivered to their door. Now, though, e-mail shopping on the Internet has opened up even more opportunities for this kind of shopping.

C) Another generation of computer fans has arrived. They are neither spotty schoolchildren nor intellectual professors, but pensioners who are learning computing with much enthusiasm. It is particularly interesting for people suffering from arthritis as computers offer a way of writing nice clear letters. Now pensioners have discovered the Internet and at the moment they make up the fastest growing membership.

D) Shopping centres are full of all kinds of stores. They are like small, self-contained towns where you can find everything you want. In a large centre, shoppers can find everything they need without having to go anywhere else. They can leave their cars in the shopping centre car park and buy everything in a covered complex, protected from the heat, cold or rain.

E) Not many people know that, back in the fifties, computers were very big, and also very slow. They took up complete floors of a building, and were less powerful, and much slower than any of today’s compact portable computers. At first, the data they had to process and record was fed in on punched-out paper; later magnetic tape was used, but both systems were completely inconvenient.

F) Potholing is a dull name for a most interesting and adventurous sport. Deep underground, on the tracks of primitive men and strange animals who have adapted to life without light, finding unusual landscapes and underground lakes, the potholer lives an exciting adventure. You mustn’t forget, though, that it can be quite dangerous. Without the proper equipment you can fall, get injured or lost.

G) Substantial remains of an octagonal Roman bath house, probably reused as a Christian baptistry, have been uncovered during a student training excavation near Faversham in Kent. The central cold plunge pool was five metres across, and stood within a structure which also had underfloor heating and hot pools, probably originally under a domed roof.

Before the Hubble Space Telescope was launched, scientists thought they knew the universe. They were wrong.

he Hubble Space Telescope has changed many scientists’ view of the universe. The telescope is named after American astronomer Edwin Hubble, A ________________________ .

He established that many galaxies exist and developed the first system for their classifications.

In many ways, Hubble is like any other telescope. It simply gathers light. It is roughly the size of a large school bus. What makes Hubble special is not what it is, B ________________________ .

Hubble was launched in 1990 from the “Discovery” space shuttle and it is about 350 miles above our planet, C ________________________ .

It is far from the glare of city lights, it doesn’t have to look through the air, D______________________.

And what a view it is! Hubble is so powerful it could spot a fly on the moon.

Yet in an average orbit, it uses the same amount of energy as 28 100-watt light bulbs. Hubble pictures require no film. The telescope takes digital images  E________________________ .

Hubble has snapped photos of storms on Saturn and exploding stars. Hubble doesn’t just focus on our solar system. It also peers into our galaxy and beyond. Many Hubble photos show the stars that make up the Milky Way galaxy. A galaxy is a city of stars.

Hubble cannot take pictures of the sun or other very bright objects, because doing so could “fry” the telescope’s instruments, but it can detect infrared and ultra violet light F_______________________ .

Some of the sights of our solar system that Hubble has glimpsed may even change the number of planets in it.

1) which is above Earth’s atmosphere.

2) which are transmitted to scientists on Earth.

3) which is invisible to the human eye.

4) who calculated the speed at which galaxies move.

5) so it has a clear view of space.

The Slob’s Holiday

My husband and I went to Reno for our holiday last year. “Isn’t that place where people go to get a quickie divorce?” asked my second son? ‘Yes’, I said, trying to look enigmatic and interesting. ‘You are not getting divorced, are you?’ he asked bluntly. ‘No,’ I said, ’we are going to an outdoor pursuit trade fair. The children sighed with relief and slouched away, muttering things like ‘boring’. I call them children, but they are all grown up. My eldest son has started to develop fine lines around his eyes – fledgling crow’s feet. A terrible sight for any parent to see. Anyway, the piece isn’t about children. It’s about holidays.

The first thing to be said about holidays is that anybody who can afford one should be grateful. The second thing is that planning holidays can be hard work. In our household it starts with somebody muttering, ’I suppose we ought to think about a holiday.’ This remark is usually made in July and is received glumly, as if the person making it has said ‘I suppose we ought to think about the Bolivian balance of payment problems.

Nothing much happens for a week and then the potential holiday-makers are rounded up and made to consult their diaries. Hospital appointments are taken into consideration, as are important things to do with work. But other highlights on the domestic calendar, such as the cat’s birthday, are swept aside and eventually two weeks are found. The next decision is the most painful: where?

We travel abroad to work quite a lot but we return tired and weary, so the holiday we are planning is a slob’s holiday: collapse on a sunbed, read a book until the sun goes down, stagger back to hotel room, shower, change into glad rags, eat well, wave good-bye to teenagers, have a last drink on hotel terrace, go to bed and then lie awake and wait for hotel waiters to bring the teenagers from the disco.

I never want to be guided around another monument, as long as I live. I do not want to be told how many bricks it took to build it. I have a short attention span for such details. I do not want to attend a ‘folk evening’ ever, ever again. The kind where men with their trousers tucked into their socks wave handkerchiefs in the direction of women wearing puff-sleeved blouses, long skirts and headscarves.

I also want to live dangerously and get brown. I want my doughy English skin change from white sliced to wheat germ. I like the simple pleasure of removing my watch strap and gazing at the patch of virgin skin beneath.

I don’t want to make new friends – on holidays or in general; I can’t manage the ones I have at home. I do not want to mix with the locals and I have no wish to go into their homes. I do not welcome tourists who come to Leicester into my home. Why should the poor locals in Holidayland be expected to? It’s bad enough that we monopolize their beaches, clog their pavements and spend an hour in a shop choosing a sunhat that costs the equivalent of 75 pence.

So, the slob’s holiday has several essential requirements: a hotel on a sunny beach, good food, a warm sea, nightlife for the teenagers, a big crowd to get lost in, and the absence of mosquitoes.

As I write, we are at the planning stage. We have looked through all the holiday brochures, but they are full of references to ‘hospitable locals’, ‘folk nights’, ‘deserted beaches’, and ‘interesting historical sights’. Not our cup of tea, or glass of sangria, at all.

1) the way children behave.

2) the fact that children are aging.

3) the way children change their image.

4) the fact there is a generation gap.

A17. When the need for holiday planning is first announced in the narrator’ family, it

1) is regarded as an important political issue.

2) is met with enthusiasm by all the family.

3) seems like an impossible task.

4) is openly ignored.

A18. To find a two-week slot for a holiday potential holiday-makers have to

1) negotiate the optimum period for travel.

2) cancel prior business appointments.

3) re-schedule individual summer plans.

4) make a list of the things to be taken into account.

A19. The slob’s holiday is the type of holiday for people, who

1) do not want to go on holiday abroad.

2) go on holiday with teenagers.

3) do not like public life.

4) prefer peaceful relaxing holidays.

A20. When the narrator says ‘I also want to live dangerously’, she means

1) getting lost in the crowd.

2) going sightseeing without a guide.

3) choosing herself the parties to go to.

4) lying long hours in the sun on the beach.

A21. The main reason the narrator doesn’t want to mix up with locals is because she

1) doesn’t let tourists to her house at Leicester.

2) doesn’t want to add to their inconveniencies.

3) is afraid to make friends with local people.

4) values her own privacy above all.

Side by Side

Melissa dropped into a chair in front of her manager’s cherry veneer desk. ‘I don’t know how people with kids can do this job,’ the 25-year-old radio advertising sales rep said.

Her boss, Laurie Thompson, had heard such self-doubt before. Her six salespeople at Connoisseur Media in Erie often popped into her office to give vent to their A22 frustrations about a tough day of cold-calling.

Laurie nodded. She didn’t have children, A23 devoting herself instead to a sales career, running marathons, cycling, sailing and spending time with her husband. ‘I don’t think I’ll ever have kids, though that would really disappoint my parents,’ Melissa said.

‘Why? Because you’re A24 an only child?’ Laurie asked. Melissa said her parents would be disappointed because they A25 longed for grandkids. Then she added, almost as an afterthought, ‘I was adopted.’ From the time she was tiny, Melissa knew that she was adopted.

‘Not really,’ Melissa said. ‘It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just that I haven’t got around to it. And I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. My parents are wonderful.’

Melissa laughed and was about to leave when Laurie asked her another question.

   ‘When were you born?’

‘April 14, 1981.’ Then, feeling she’d taken A28 up enough of her boss’s time, Melissa said goodbye and headed home.

Задание 1

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A

My idea of a perfect friend is that it’s a person who stays with you in ups and downs. A true friend is someone who’s always with you whether you need money or a shoulder to cry on. He or she is always there to support and help you without being asked. You’d really know your true friends when you are having a bad time in life. I think a perfect friend is also patient and doesn’t get angry too quickly… in short an ideal friend should be perfect with his or her friend. I have only two friends that I can really call ‘close friends’. Others are just acquaintances.

Speaker B

I would like to have a friend of the same height as myself because usually all my friends are shorter than me. Of course my best friend has to be fun to talk to and she must be a good listener as well. But most importantly, a perfect friend is someone who tells me I have something on my face if I do and doesn’t just let me walk around with it there. A perfect friend is someone that I can trust, someone who is always with me. Unfortunately, I’ve never had a perfect friend. All my previous ‘friends’ used to lie to me. But I think my family are my best friends.

Speaker C

An ideal friend is a person who knows everything about you and shares all the happy and depressing moments of your life. When I cry, they simply cry with me. They are the ones who are totally caring and really understanding and they could help us in solving our problems. They cheer us up when we feel sad. They joke when we need to laugh. That’s what I call ‘perfect friends’. Nowadays, I don’t know whether I have a perfect friend or not because people are changing. But that’s OK as long as I am the one who is a perfect friend for my friends.

Speaker D

A true friend is someone who is loyal, and brings out the best in you. They never hesitate and tell the truth no matter whether you’ve done a good or a bad thing and try to improve you because they love you and care for you and would never ever let you down as they are your true friends. A true friend would never go behind your back and do something shady. In short, a perfect friend is someone who never talks behind your back no matter what … that hurts me most!!

Speaker E

Well, my best friend doesn’t really comfort me when I’m upset over bad grades at school … she takes an easier way out and tickles me instead. She’s rather short-tempered and often fights over little things, storms away … but returns an hour later with a chocolate cake and an apology. She appears visibly bored with my constant chatter but surprisingly, recalls even the most insignificant detail of what I’ve said. She has a weird way of showing that she cares for me, but the bottom line is, she does care a lot! I think that my best friend is my perfect friend for that simple reason that she’s ‘not-so-perfect’!!

Speaker F

It’s great to have true friends! They love and care for you, they will always listen to you and stand by you. True friends are honest and loyal; they will never betray you or hurt you. What really matters is that a close friend is there for you no matter what. Friends come and go, but a true one will never leave you in any situation. A perfect friend is someone who is always there to catch you when you fall, someone who you can have fun with. Well, as for my experience, all my friends leave me because they migrate to different places where it is hard to stay in touch.

Задание 2

Now we are ready to start.

Fred: Well, James, I’ve got to admit you have a beautiful backyard. How do you do it?
James: Oh, it does take time and patience. But I’ve also got a few secrets…
Fred: OK, OK, what do I have to do to make you reveal your secrets? You know if I had the money, I’d just hire a gardener.
James: No, Fred, you needn’t do that. I’d never hire a gardener. Working in the yard is the greatest form of relaxation that I know of. It’s so relaxing to hear birds singing!
Fred: You’re kidding, right?! I don’t have any birds in my backyard.
James: That’s not a problem. If you want the birds to stay in your backyard, then you must provide shelter for them. A birdhouse can be a cheap and easy way to do this.
Fred: I don’t think I’ll be able to make a birdhouse myself and there are no shops selling them either.
James: Then you can try limiting the amount of grass you have in your backyard. Most song birds don’t like grass, but prefer shrubs and trees. It’s good that you’ve got so many trees!
Fred: I would have never planted so many trees if I had known how much work they’d require.
James: You see, that’s your problem. Your attitude is all wrong.
Fred: Excuse me. My attitude is wrong? What does attitude have to do with gardening?
James: You’ve got to love working in the backyard — that’s my secret!
Fred: Love working in the backyard? What! What kind of secret is that? I expected some special lawn mower, or a special type of gardening tools.
James: No, any lawn mower or tool will do the job. It’s all in the mind.
Fred: So you think that if I had a better feeling about my work in the garden, everything would be wonderful and I’d have a beautiful lawn and healthy plants like yours, right?
James: … yes, yes that’s it. You’ve got it!
Fred: To tell you the truth, I think you’re crazy!! On second thoughts, I think I’ll just pay a gardener.
James: Ha-ha, that won’t work.
Fred: Why not?
James: Because he has to enjoy his gardening…
Fred: Please, James, thank you very much for your advice. But, don’t start it again!

Задание 3-9

Now we are ready to start.

When I’m stopped on the street, people often want to tell me that they’ve never forgotten my match against Bobby Riggs in 1973. Every single day of my life, people come up to me and say, ‘I remember watching you play that match, and win.’ Men, especially, tell me this. It’s amazing. They say, ‘I have a daughter now, and she’s ten years old. I’m raising my daughter differently because of seeing you play that match.’ They really insist that their daughters and sons have equal opportunities. It’s been a huge shift in attitude. These men are so different from their fathers and grandfathers.

My parents have always been the biggest inspiration in my life. They worked three jobs so that my brother, Randy, and I could pursue our athletic dreams as kids. They taught us great lessons, which are particularly relevant today, with the economy the way it is. My parents always said, ‘If you don’t have it, don’t spend it.” When I was eleven and wanted to buy my first tennis racket, they didn’t buy it for me. I had to work odd jobs to earn it. Their attitude was, ‘Let’s see if you’re really interested.

Let’s see if you have the focus.’ I guess I solved that one!

Actually, I don’t have much free time but when I do have a spare minute, I enjoy reading. My favourite book is Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty by Muhammad Yunus, the economist who won the Nobel Prize in 2006. It’s great. He explains how he developed the Grameen Bank and how, through the concept of micro-financing, he was able to change a lot of people’s lives. As soon as he gave out a small loan to different people, he began to visualize what that could lead to. He saw the potential. He is one of my heroes. That’s what I try to do for tennis and other things.

The person I admire most of all is Julie Foudy, former Olympic soccer star. She walks into a room and just lights it up. We see each other every October at the Women’s Sports Foundation dinner in New York, which brings together athletes from over 130 sports. She’s energetic, bright, and possesses all of the qualities that go into leadership, which sports is a great venue for. Sometimes she’ll just call me and say, ‘Help!’ We should all ask for help when we need it, particularly when we’re young-and, you know, when you need help. It takes courage to ask for it. With her energy and her leadership qualities, Julie can do just about anything. That’s great!

People always think that being a great sportsman doesn’t require any effort. They believe that success is easy. Absolutely wrong! Athletes must have a daily discipline of mind, body, and soul. They have to do it all as physical exertion teaches tenacity and will power. But you cannot just be ‘dead from the neck up.’ It is also a way of thinking, the mental side that often spells the difference between an average hitter and a good hitter and between a good hitter and a great hitter. Life is difficult sometimes. But every time I see a ball bounce, I think about bouncing back myself. It’s a philosophy.

I don’t only think about winning tennis matches. I also think about what I’ve done off the court. Everything I’ve done is trying to push the envelope, whether it’s on or off the court, to create a more level playing field for others and to help people have a better quality of life. That’s what I care about.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.)

This is the end of the Listening Test.

1) Special Attitude is Required
2) Lack of Challenge May Cause Problems
3) Gifted Children Always Become Famous
4) Awareness of Giftedness

5) Gifted Children Have no Support
6) Contrary to Popular Belief
7) Being Gifted Is not Always Easy
8) Identifying the Gifted Child

A. Gifted children’s behaviour differs from that of their age-mates. Many gifted children learn to read early, with better comprehension of the nuances of language. As much as half of the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school. They can work independently at an earlier age and can concentrate for longer periods. They like to learn new things, are willing to examine the unusual, and are highly inquisitive.

B. Being academically gifted is a topic laced with myths and fears, many of which are unfounded. Moreover, academically gifted children often face special problems. So do their parents. Schools treat those children differently from those whose talents lie in other areas, like music, art, and sports. Gifted children may also be learning disabled, or have another disability while being highly intelligent.

C. Social and emotional difficulties are not directly linked to giftedness. Rather, they result from a lack of understanding by the child of the nature of their intellectual differ- ence. Parents and teachers don’t usually discuss this difference with them because of the concern that they may get a ‘swelled head’. The risk is that gifted children may view their differences as ‘weird’ or ‘bad’ or try to ignore or deny them.

D. Most of the athletes are allowed to develop their special skills at whatever rate best suits them. No one tries to stop them from becoming much better baseball players or swimmers than their classmates. Yet if an academically gifted child tries to do two years of work in one, that’s viewed as potentially harmful. Much of the concern focuses on the non-academic areas of these gifted children’s development.

E. Researchers emphasize that for the vast majority of academically gifted children those concerns are groundless. In fact, these children are more likely to develop social and even academic problems if they don’t feel intellectually challenged. If gifted children don’t go to challenging programs, they may not learn how to learn. Eventually, in college or graduate school, they feel emotionally overwhelmed when they can’t just coast through their courses anymore.

F. Gifted children represent both a challenge and a resource for schools. Educators have a responsibility to provide programs to meet the educational needs of gifted students who are capable of learning at advanced levels. Ideally, schools should have specifically trained teachers for gifted students to create a challenging and supportive learning environment for these children.

G. Gifted children are often viewed as ‘the smart ones’ who should know everything. Yet, being gifted does not mean they possess great abilities in every area. Albert Einstein was 4 years old before he spoke a word. Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade, and Leo Tolstoy flunked out of college. What do these three famous people have in common? In fact, they are all considered gifted, and in some cases, geniuses.

Solar panels on the roof aren’t just providing clean power; they are cooling the house. Using thermal imaging, researchers determined that during the day, a building’s ceiling was 5 degrees Fahrenheit cooler under solar panels than under an exposed roof. At night, the panels help hold heat in, A___________.

As solar panels sprout on an increasing number of residential and commercial roofs, it becomes more important to consider their impact on buildings’ total energy costs. Data for the study was gathered over three days on the roof of the San Diego School of Engineering with a thermal infrared camera. The building is equipped with tilted solar panels and solar panels B___________. Some portions of the roof are not covered by panels.

The panels essentially act as roof shades. Rather than the sun beating down onto the roof, C___________, photovoltaic panels take the solar beating. Then much of the heat is removed by wind blowing between the panels and the roof. The benefits are greater if there is an open gap D___________, so tilted panels provide more cooling. Also, the more efficient the solar panels, the bigger the cooling effect. For the building researchers analyzed, the panels reduced the amount of heat reaching the roof by about 38 percent.

Although the measurements took place over a limited period of time, the team developed a model that allows them to extrapolate their findings to predict cooling effects throughout the year.

For example, in winter, the panels would keep the sun from heating up the building. But at night, they would also keep in E___________.

There are more efficient ways to passively cool buildings F___________. But, if you are considering installing solar photovoltaic, depending on your roof thermal properties, you can expect a large reduction in the amount of energy you use to cool your residence or business.

1) that are flush with the roof
2) such as reflective roof membranes
3) which causes heat to be pushed through the roof
4) where air can circulate between the building and the solar panel
5) that was not covered with panels
6) reducing heating costs in the winter
7) whatever heat accumulated inside

Arriving home after her part-time job at Burger King, Lykesia Lilly planned to shoot some hoops. It was late afternoon on a Sunday. Maybe she’d even play some one-on-one with her little nephew Adrian before supper. But when Lilly asked her sister where the boy was, her casual question was met with concern. ‘I was outside looking for him because his dad and I realized we hadn’t seen him in a while, ’ recalls Adrian’s mother, Stephanie Crump. ‘He was supposed to be playing at a house down the street, but when we called, he wasn’t there.’

In their tiny, rural community of Burnsville, North Carolina, kids still run freely from yard to yard, popping in and out of single-story brick houses with tree-lined lawns. Even traffic poses little threat. The hamlet’s centre consists of a single blinking caution light and two stores. But on that sunny May afternoon, six-year-old Adrian Clark seemed to have simply vanished. Much of his close and extended family joined in a frantic search, combing the neighbourhood and the energetic first grader’s usual play spots.

Finally, they heard faint cries coming from below a mound of rocks piled on his grandmother’s lawn. ‘We could hear him, but we couldn’t see him, ’ recalls Lilly. ‘It was like he was invisible.’ Following his voice, they stumbled on an abandoned well covered with landscaping shale that had been forgotten for years. Somehow Adrian had pushed the slabs aside and slipped into the ragged hole in the ground. There, down the dark, narrow shaft, they saw him — a small figure 15 feet below, suspended over water. Exhausted and shivering, he’d been clinging to pieces of craggy rock and concrete for nearly an hour.

From the lip of the well, the family tried to reassure the child. But they had no idea how to get him out. The well was only 14 inches wide at the top, ‘the size of a five-gallon bucket, ’ says Crump. ‘We realized none of the adults could fit through it.’ They lowered a long orange extension cord, but Adrian — who’d slipped into the murky, freezing water three times by now — was too afraid to let go of the wall to wrap the lifeline around himself.

Fighting hysteria, Crump made two calls to 911. One reached the local volunteer fire department, and the other, the Anson County EMS dispatcher, 13 miles away. But Crump still worried that Adrian would lose his grip before they got there. That’s when Lilly decided she had to go down — despite her inability to swim. ‘Everyone was panicking and crying, and I knew I couldn’t wait any longer, ’ she recalls. ‘I just had to get my nephew.’

Crump and Adrian’s father, Dale Clark, lowered Lilly down the shaft as far as they could, then let go. The well got wider part of the way down, and she slid past her nephew and into the water below. Fortunately, Lilly instinctively pushed off the bottom, 12 feet underwater, and surfaced just under Adrian. ‘I got focused, ’ she says. With the water level just under her nose, Lilly then bolstered her 100-pound nephew, who was shaking in his soaking clothes. With one arm, she grabbed the cord that Adrian’s father was dangling from above and tied it around Adrian’s waist. ‘I was pushing him and holding on with my legs while they were pulling, ’ Lilly says. ‘Somehow they got him out.’

Lilly herself was pulled out just as the rescue squad arrived. Both Adrian and Lilly were taken to the hospital, where he was blanketed with heat packs to ward off hypothermia and she was treated for bruises and lacerations. County workers sealed the well for good a few days later.

The next week, Crump threw a surprise party to honour the gentle-natured teen, who in the past had expressed fear of even the tamer rides at a nearby amusement park. ‘I think if my baby had drowned, if he hadn’t been able to hold on …’ Crump says. ‘I can’t thank Lykesia enough.’ Now working in a day-care centre, Lilly is hoping for a scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina, where she wants to study forensics. ‘She’s more serious and responsible now, ’ observes Crump. ‘I don’t think she knew she had it in her.’

Lilly and Adrian have been uniquely close since the rescue. ‘He reminds me all the time, ’ she says fondly. ‘He’ll say, ‘Thank you, Auntie, for saving me.’ And he’ll hug me. Just out of the blue.

A – 7
B – 5
C – 3
D – 4
E – 1
F – 6

Speaker A: I try to care about our planet. Some people argue that it’s impossible for an individual to affect major changes, but I disagree as there’re many things everyone can do to help our planet. Let’s start with our homes. Encouraging your family to recycle regularly is a good thing to start with. Every glass bottle you recycle saves enough energy to run a TV for an hour, while recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours! It’s not difficult to turn out the lights when you leave a room or use re-useable containers for your lunches.

Speaker B: My name is Walton and I’m from the USA. I’m personally concerned about our environment pollution. I try to protect the environment, to preserve it and leave it clean and undamaged for the next generations who are at risk of not being able to leave their homes due to the high city pollution. Yet now, in my native city (Boston) the smog has increased to such a threatening level that my family and I had to move, because the air was harmful to the health of my 4-year-old son.

Speaker С: In my country, England, there is hardly a part of it that is within its natural state. The typical English countryside, the hills and fields, have all been shaped by generations of cultivation. In fact, taking the planet as a whole there is hardly a part of it that humans have not changed. I fear that by our pollution humans are changing the places where they do not live and where they live. Deserts are becoming hotter, arctic ice is melting and wherever you look you can see the ugly footprint of humanity.

Speaker D: Of course we should care more about our planet water supplies. When you use water wisely, you help the environment. You save water for fish and animals. You help preserve drinking water supplies as well. You save the energy that your water supplier uses to move water to you and the energy your family uses to heat your water. When you use water wisely, you save money as your family pays for the water you use. So if kids start learning to use water wisely today, they will be helping themselves in the future.

Speaker E: My name is Susan and I’m 17 years old. I think the earth is the home we all live in but many people simply don’t care. I get depressed by all those warnings that we hear daily, acid rain, global warming and on and on. It is likely that there will always be some people who litter in towns and in the country, despite fines and knowledge of the environmental consequences. You cannot influence the way other people care for our planet and that makes me very sad.

Speaker F: I suggest we should use all resources in the most efficient way possible. A green home will be a good solution here as it helps to conserve energy as well as water. Waste and pollution will be decreased too. A green home protects the environment by using renewable solar energy. Solar panels on the roof of a home collect sunlight, which is then converted into power to heat the home and run the home equipment. So a green home will save energy as well as money in addition to having other health benefits.

How does a solar panel work?

If you are thinking about producing your own sun-based energy, the first thing to ask yourself is how does a solar panel work.

It is important to think about how our energy consumption habits impact not only our lives, but also the planet.

For many years, nuclear energy and oil have been almost the only way to produce enough energy to power our homes, but this is all changing. There are now way greener ways to live and to meet our needs in energy.

All you really need to know is how a solar panels works.

Solar panels work using the photovoltaic effect, and do so using silicon much like computers. When silicon is stripped down, it is ideal for the transmission of electrons – the backbone behind how solar panels work.

When they’re not charged, silicon atoms only carry four electrons, but they can carry eight when charged.

When combined with elements found in sunlight, the solar plates combine through conductive wires to allow the passing of currents between panels.

Without photons (found in sunlight) these panels wouldn’t charge. The silicon atom carries nine electrons when it connects with sunlight, but it only has space for eight.

The particle ‘drops’ the negative electron, which circulates until it’s picked up by a positive electrode, which generates charge in the panel.

The atom can remain undamaged for a long time, which is why this form of energy is so durable.

Learn more about how a solar panel works

A common mistake is that people believe you need to live in a very warm and sunny area to use solar panels. It’s not necessarily true.

Even though it’s undeniable that areas such as California, South Europe or Africa would make the best out of solar panels, a tropical climate is not mandatory if you wish to install solar panels.

The way solar panels work, is that they convert sunlight into energy. It has nothing to do with the heat, so you don’t have to live in the warmest area of the globe to enjoy the perks of producing your own energy.

Solar panels work even when there is less light, for example during the winter. The daylight time will be reduced, and so will be your energy production, but there is no reason that you won’t be able to cover your basic needs in electricity.

The temperature is not an important factor, and solar panels work in spite of the snow. You will just have to make sure that snow doesn’t cover the panel, making it harder to catch the light and convert it into energy.

The pros and cons of installing your own solar panels are numerous, and you should consider every aspect of it before making any decision.

Yes, solar panels cost a lot to purchase and install, but you’ll save a lot on your electricity bills.

Yes, solar panels work everywhere on the globe, but only as long as there is enough sun during the day. Considering installing solar panels in an area that has mostly rainy days might not be the best idea.

On the contrary, if you are lucky enough to live in a very sunny region, your production may be higher than your needs. In that case, you should contact a specialist, who will advise you on the best way to sell your excess of energy.

Yes that’s right, you can make money by producing your own energy. A win-win situation in which the planet and you will be equally happy.

How do solar panels work for your home?

Solar panels are an energy saving home power solution that can help dramatically reduce both your power bill and your carbon footprint.

Installing them is relatively simple and although their one-time installation cost may be high, long term prices for these panels are remarkably reasonable.

Many commercial and residential dwellings use solar panels as part of their energy plan and use is only growing in popularity. This applies particularly to areas of the world where at least 6 hours of peak sunshine are available on a daily basis for large parts of the year.

However, even in less sun soaked places, panels can be installed and will still help reduce your power bill to some extent.

That said, you should look over some important factors that you need to consider before installing a solar panel system in your own home or business.

This is a fairly big decision and you need to have at least your basic facts straight if you want to go ahead with it. Here are 5 important things you should know before installing solar panels on your home.

Solar panels boost the value of your home, and provide enough savings over time to pay for themselves –and yet so many avoid the prospect of doing so because it seems like such a daunting task.

Installing solar panels doesn’t have to be a nightmare; here are a handful of tips to make the process a little easier (and less scary) for the uninitiated.

Why install solar panels?

Energy consumption is an important environmental factor. To produce energy, many highly-polluting methods still exist and endanger our planet and ourselves.

Oil causes wars and pollution problems, so how do we produce a clean, violence-free energy? What if that big yellow ball in the sky could help us? Yes, we’ll tell you how solar panels can work for your home, so you can produce your own natural energy to power your home.

Going green has a lot of perks, and it’s all easier than it seems. Many websites will explain in details how to choose and install your solar panels, and produce your own energy. If you are lucky enough to live in a sunny area, make the most of it!

Be kind to the environment and to your wallet, and find out how solar panels work for your home.

Solar panels for your home: pros and cons

In these times of environmental crisis, let’s look at solar panels’ pros and cons.

You might want to start producing your own energy, and that is a great idea. Electricity is expensive, and its production can be very damaging for the environment.

If you have decided that you don’t want to contribute to air pollution anymore, or just want to adopt cleaner energy for the good of the planet, take a look at these solar panels pros and cons.

Pros

The advantages for you are numerous. Mass-energy production can be harmful to the environment and humans. Nuclear power stations have caused enormous damages to populations’ and to the planet’s health.

Aside from doing the planet and yourself a big favour, solar panels pros are also economical. Producing your own energy means that you will save a lot of money on electricity bills, and let’s face it, that is a huge solar panels pro.

Of course the amount of what you will be saving depends on different factors, and you might save more during the summer than during the winter, during daytime than at night, and so on.

On the side of solar panels pros, yes, the sun shines everywhere. You don’t have to live in a well-connected area to enjoy sunlight, and that’s great if you live in the countryside.

in remote areas, it is easier to get solar energy than a high-speed Internet connection!

Also, it is possible to sell the excess of energy produced. If you live in a very sunny area, you might produce energy in excess, but a relatively sunny area can provide you with enough energy to cover the basic needs of your family.

Cons

However, keep in mind that one of the solar panels cons is that they are costly. The installation and the cost of the panels are not cheap, but it’s worth it if you can afford it.

On the side of solar panels cons, you can’t guarantee sun everywhere. There are places sunnier than others, and you don’t really have a word in it, especially if you already own your house in a place that doesn’t have great sun exposure all year long.

It goes without saying that solar panels are more worth the try for those who live in California than for people who live in Alaska.

Bear in mind that its initial cost is high, but that you will be saving money on the bills over the long-term. It won’t be an immediate return on the investment.

However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages – solar panels are very environmental-friendly, and deserve to be taken a closer look at.

Do solar panels work in winter?

If you are considering going for home-made, green energy, you must be wondering if solar panels work in winter.

To answer this question, it’s important to know how solar panels work.

Even though the sun heats, it’s the light that’s converted into electricity. This means that even in absence of sun heat, your solar panel will continue converting the sunlight into energy, regardless of the season.

However, keep in mind that even if solar panels work in the winter, the time of daylight is reduced and so will be the amount of energy you can produce.

Even though installing your own solar panel will help you reduce the cost of your energy consumption, the whole process is a bit expensive, so before you make the investment, some practical factors need to be taken into account, depending on where you live.

You will have to consider whether this is a sunny enough area to make it worth the price, and whether or not solar panels work in winter.

Some of us don’t live in countries or cities that have an all-year-round summer-like weather, and it is something to think about before investing money and time into solar panels.

But what about other winter factors, and how do they affect my solar panels?

Does snow affect solar panels?

Whether or not snow affects solar panels is a good question, and a tricky one as well.

The amount of electricity you can produce with your solar panel will vary depending on where you live, and the season sure will have an influence on it.

Technically, the snow will not damage your solar panels. However, in order for the panels to work, they need to be able to absorb the sunlight. So you must make sure that nothing covers the panels, as it needs access to the sunlight to convert it to energy.

Make sure no leaves or significant quantity of snow obstructs the sunlight way to your panels.

The great thing is that solar panels work in winter, so there isn’t a time of the year when you’ll find yourself in a difficult situation.

It’s a great idea to reduce your mass-energy consumption. Going for solar panels is way greener, and will cost you and the planet less in the long-term.

However, if you get enough sunlight in your area in the summer, the wintertime should not cause any particular problem. Just make sure that nothing covers the panels, making it harder to absorb the light.

How much does it cost to get solar panels on a house?

The cost of your solar panel system will depend on electricity usage, which dictates how many solar panels you need.

Many people consider producing their own energy, but are wondering how much it costs to get solar panels on a house. That’s a tricky question, but the answer might surprise you.

Is it expensive? Not really.

Installing the solar panels has a cost, but you’ll eventually be saving money on electricity bills. By looking at different companies and comparing the quotes, make sure you’ll find the best priced solar panels. Keep in mind that it’s not because a company is famous that they offer the best deals.

Did you know that you can actually make money with your solar panels? If you produce more electricity than you can use, you can sell it. If the energy produced by your solar panel exceeds your consumption, it can be sold to a third-party and you’ll make some money.

Make sure to contact a specialist, who will explain to you how everything works in your region, so you’ll make the best out of your solar energy adventure!

Producing mass-energy has become more and more costly to the planet. Cheap energies such a nuclear are easy to produce, but pose potential problems for humans and the planet.

Energy production is one of the great questions of our times: how do we do it, and how do we make it less harmful for the planet?

Clean energies such as solar and wind are great alternatives, but many wonder how much it costs to get solar panels on a house. No one wants to lose money, even for the greater good, and that’s understandable.

Life is not easy, and there is no need to complicate it for nothing. However, you might be wrong if you think getting solar panels is expensive.

Of course, any transition has a cost. Purchasing and installing solar panels has one as well, and it’s surely not cheap. The cost of it might scare away some people, but it’s necessary to look at the big picture when you decide to go greener.

Indeed, you will only need to instal your solar panels once. They are quite resistant, and don’t require a lot of maintenance. Snow or rain don’t matter, and won’t damage your panels.

However, if you live in a very cloudy and rainy area, this particular alternative might not be ideal for you, as solar panels need sunlight to produce energy.

So, how much does it cost to get solar panels on a house?

You can find the best quotes on the Internet. Don’t hesitate to compare quotes from different companies and see which ones offer the best deals.

The idea is that you will start saving a lot on your electricity bills, which is often one of the most expensive bills. Since you will be producing your own, no need to give all your money to your energy provider. Get better control over your consumption and budget.

Have a talk with a specialist who will guide you through the process, and start making profit. In the end, the cost of installing solar panels is much lower than all its advantages.

Can you buy and install your own solar panels?

If you are looking to go green, maybe you are wondering if you can buy and install you own solar panels.

With a little help, it isn’t difficult to size the system yourself, select components, or even mount and install solar panels, inverters, and appropriate safety disconnects.

Solar panels have become a real alternative, and everyone should consider it for their home. Not only are the solar panels producing green and clean energy, which is great for the planet, but they come with all sorts of advantages.

Producing your own electricity will give you more independence and more control over your energy consumption and budget. If you believe to be living in an area that is sunny enough to produce your solar energy, the only question left is the one of the cost.

Buying and installing solar panels has a cost, and many are not ready to spend that much money upfront, even if it means saving money eventually, and even maybe making some.

Professional installation can be quite costly, and we see more and more people wondering whether or not you can buy and install your own solar panels.

It depends on you, and on the solar panels you want to invest in. Some companies offer smaller solar panels, and promote a DYI installation that doesn’t require professional help.

These alternatives exist, and the market is growing. You can look at the these panels, and see if they match your expectations.

However, when it comes to electricity, there is always danger. You should not manipulate some components on your own.

Also, solar panels can be quite expensive to buy, and hiring a professional to install them for you will reduce the risk of you making a mistake, which will end-up being way more expensive if you damage the materials you bought for your own installation.

To start installing your very own home solar panels, there are several things that you should consider.

In you want to have everything right and legal, seek professional help. You can buy and install your own solar panels, but don’t forget that it is safer and will anticipate problems if you ask a company to do it for you.

Trying to fix some problems on your own can be way more costly than hiring an electrician in the first place.

Going for solar panels is a great idea, and the planet and your children might thank you later.

However, like any installation, it requires skills that you might not have. If you have any doubts, ask for a professional to help you, in order to avoid any error that would result in damages to the panels, your home, or yourself.

A. Solar heat can be stored in solar panels so it is available on demand at any time. In a solar efficient designed house, the building elements store the energy for nighttime comfort and for cloudy days. Some solar technologies require no additional costs. Solar equipment costs less than other alternatives to buy and has lower running costs.

B. Volkswagen will soon announce the first car made out of carbon-reinforced rubber with an internal floating passenger capsule. Tests have shown that even at impact of 160 km per hour the car simply bounces back to its original shape and the passengers (provided they are strapped in) remain a bit shaken but unhurt.

C. Sometimes it appears that the human mark on this planet is indelible. In only a blink of geological time, 200 years or so, human construction and expansion has resulted in the destruction of more than one-fifth of the world’s forests, the melting of the polar icecaps, and the creation of a huge hole in the ozone layer. Additionally, industrial activity has damaged rivers and oceans. Environmental scientists and activists warn that humankind could very well destroy the planet.

D. The latest phone that looks like a wristwatch presented by Sieko at the Tokyo Hi-Tec exhibition features a button that when pressed can locate your position anywhere in the world to within a two-metre square. It will be essential equipment for adventurous travelers and dodgy taxi drivers.

E. Harvest time in Esperance is constant. As long as the wind blows — which is pretty much all the time — nine identical wind turbines reap the benefits of the dependable winds. These sleek, white, robot-like wind turbines loom up on the horizon. They’re not only functional machines that help provide electricity for this coastal town, but they’re also drawcards for curious tourists.

F. Biometrics involves the use of physical or biological characteristics to identify individuals. Biometric security systems operate by storing a digitised record of some unique human feature. Systems using fingerprints, hands, voices, irises, retinas and faces are already on the market. Others using typing patterns and even body odours are in various stages of development.

G. Some scientists predict that if we think of ecology we should think of changing our thinking completely. For instance, by 2058 with help of new technology Britain may announce that pollution levels are one twentieth of what they were in the year 2000. This is largely due to all non-local road transport being safely underground and the recycling of industrial by-products before reaching the atmosphere.
