The secret tunnel
In the middle
of our village, there is a beautiful old church, which dates back to the
beginning of the Middle Ages. It was rebuilt several times, but some of its
parts, including the foundations, are 1 ______.
Well, 2 ______ about restoration, a while
ago they decided to install a heating system there, as it gets cold in
winter. Some of the local boys volunteered to help, including myself.
The benches were connected in stacks, so it was hard work to lift or to push
them away, but we managed it. Most of the church floor was covered with
marble-type slabs, but under some benches there were just some
ancient-looking bricks.
We got really 3 ______, as we had heard stories
about an old underground passageway leading from a crypt below the church to
the castle in the nearest city. It is twelve miles 4 ______.
So, a friend of mine and I started to dig down there. It was relatively easy
to pull out the top layer of bricks, and underneath them we found soil, which
also moved easily as it was completely dry. We found that one side of the
hole was so soft that you could just 5 ______ a
stick through it. It was obviously that passageway! Then some workmen came in
and told us to stop. Just fancy that! We had to stop at the most exciting
moment.
After a few days, the workmen put a layer of hard cement over the entire
floor, so our find remained a mystery. But I won’t give 6 ______.
I still hope to go there some day and find that secret tunnel. Maybe, that
will become the greatest 7 ______ of the
21st century.

It 7 _____ beautiful in our

One day I came home from the shop. The boys met me at the door. “I’m as

matter, does it? You told us it wasn’t new. You aren’t cross, are you?”

That is how Moore arrived at

My new home was a long way

person was rejected quickly and sometimes after quite a while. Obviously

“Why did you leave your last job, “Why did you leave your job before
that? “And the one before?” I can’t 5 ______ my
answers, except they were short at first and grew shorter as we
continued. His closing statement 6 ______ a lack of

point. Or so I thought, believing that the work was easy. Actually, such
a job 7 ______ exactly this sort of elementary
responsibility a dreamer like me is unlikely to have. But, I was still
far short of self-understanding as well as short of cash.

and made me proud. However, they have also challenged me, made me angry
and tested my patience.
Each day we start anew, going about a 1 ______ routine.
I drive them to school, pick them up, cook for them and help with
homework. We spend the evenings 2 ______ about
what happened during the day. I meet their teachers and study for tests
with them. They are the last people I see each night and the first ones I
hear in the morning. They have become a 3 ______ of
my life. I am twenty-two and am beginning to understand the love of a
parent.
I could not have come this far without patience. They do not think like
miniature adults and it is not fair to expect them to. 4 ______ my
expectations of them are high, I must remember that so much of what they
see and understand is for the first time. First loves, first failed test,
first time feeling the need to break away from the nest. I must have
patience with them, because there is still a child within that comes out
when I least expect it.
This world is a fast-paced, fast food, fast-internet
place. 5 ______, no matter how fast things
move, children will be children. I believe they will mature quicker and
with more tools if I am patient. I see it in their eyes. Over time, sad
eyes can glisten again, but only if I am 6 ______ of
the fact that it takes them longer to get somewhere.
I see around them a world that expects too much of them. They
come 7 ______ too many things that give
them too much sadness. They listen to me, respect me and understand
reason but not always when I want them to. This opportunity has given me
wisdom but only when I was patient enough to hear a child.

To the North of London
The Aldenham Country Park is a large and pleasant area
easily reached if you are travelling north out of London. It is worth visiting
if you want a quick breath of fresh air and a reasonably attractive place for a
brief picnic. The most important point of the park is Aldenham Reservoir. It
was built in 1796 to __maintain__ the
water level in the river __affected__ by the
newly constructed Grand Union Canal, and more recently has been used as a
reserve public water supply.
Not far from there lies the busy town of Watford which can be
recommended for a brief visit. And in any __case__ much more interesting stretches of the canal are met further
north. And if you make your way through the town you can visit the Watford
Museum in the High Street which has materials on printing and paper-making on
__display__. The
picture gallery has changing exhibitions of works by artists who lived or
painted in the area.
Another attraction of the neighbourhood is a fascinating complex

mosaics can hardly be described on paper, and it is best __appreciated__ by standing and looking for a while. The
other principal Roman site to be visited is a long stretch of the city wall
which __dates__ back
to the 3rd century.

Searching for a New Programme
A healthy lifestyle can vastly improve your well-being.
This is a lifestyle designed for those who wish to feel more certain about
their health and more in control of what the present and future will bring them
in that important __area__ of
existence. None of us wants to be sick. None of us enjoys the idea that we may
become a medical statistic. This is a simple, easy-to-follow health-style that
can enable you to get cards very much in your __favour__. The doctors were fortunate enough to come into __contact__ with a field of study that brought them to healing and
well-being that they so desperately needed. They personally have __witnessed__ thousands of people improve their health
using only a small part of information.
Many more people begin to improve their health now. Embracing
the most current information from many health-related fields, the programme of
healthy lifestyle gives you an understanding of the impact of exercise,
breathing, sunshine, sleep and much more on your health. In order for this
programme to work for you, you have to be willing to apply at least some part
of it. Some change will be __required__. And as you make those first modest changes, you will get
positive results that encourage you to do more. Changing is fun. And if you
realize that your new healthy lifestyle __involves__ the making of new habits,
not the __breaking__ of old
ones, you will feel very positive about what the future holds for you.

Ordinary
“Ordinary” was the worst word she could find for anything.
She and I would argue fiercely because I wanted to be ordinary as desperately
as my mother wanted to be __unusual__ .
“I can’t __stand__ that
hair-do”, she said when I went to the hairdresser with my friend and came back
with a pageboy haircut straight out of Seventeen magazine, “It’s so terribly
ordinary”. Not ugly, not unsuitable. But ordinary.
Her __fear__ of
ordinariness came out most strongly in her clothes.
“Couldn’t you please __wear__ something else?” I asked her when she was dressing for
Parents’ Day in tight-fitting pants and a bright pink sweater, with a Mexican
cape.
“What’s wrong with my outfit?”
What wasn’t wrong with it!
“It’s just that I wish it would be something more plain,” I said
sheepishly, “something that people won’t __stare__ at.”
She looked at me angrily and drew herself __up__ to her full height of five feet ten inches.
“Are you __ashamed__ of
your own mother? Because if you are, Isadora, I feel __sorry__ for you. I really do.”

Alaska
The first Europeans to visit what is now called Alaska were
Russian sailors led by Captain Bering. The __expedition__ was funded by Russian czar Peter the
Great. In 1728 Bering and his crew __sailed__ through the strait that is now named after him, between the
easternmost part of Asia and the westernmost part of the Americas. Their
journey __proved__ that
Asia was not connected to North America; however, due to the heavy fog, they
never actually saw the nearby land of North America. In 1741 Bering headed
further south, landing on tiny Kayak Island off the __shore__ of what is now the southeastern part of the state.
In the 1780s and 1790s Russians began small colonies, first on
Kodiak Island and later on the mainland. In 1799 the Russian-American Company
was established to __look_after__
Russian interests. For the next 68 years the company provided the only form of
government for the European colonists, __who__ never numbered more than a few hundred. The Russians ruled
the __area__ until
the late 1860s, when they sold it to the United States for $7.2 million
dollars.
The __discovery__ of
gold in 1896 in the Yukon Territory started a huge gold rush that brought
thousands of settlers.

The First Day at School
Do you remember your first day at school? It was probably __rather__ confusing. Now, to __avoid__ this confusion, many primary schools in England have a
special teacher who welcomes new pupils. She is __called__ a reception class teacher. The children are __threatened__ with the idea of school and if they have
been good, they can’t understand why they have to go to school. They imagine
that school is optional. When the child goes to school on his first day and
watches his mother leaving he thinks that she is deserting him. The teacher
must __convince__ him
that at the end of the day his mother will be back and take him home. The
children are not the only people that are disturbed by going to school. The
teacher sometimes has as much difficulty in __coping__ with the mothers. They hang around and dislike leaving the
child without their protection.
The best way to __deal__ with the situation is to get the child used to the idea of
school. Before the beginning of term, the mother should take her child to see
the teacher and to look __round__ the
school. The first day should be something to emphasize the regularity of
school.

Your Future World
What will you be doing in 2025? Will you be living in an
undersea research station? Will you be the chief engineer __designing__ a bridge across the Atlantic Ocean? Will
you be leading an __expedition__ to the
planet Mars? Will you be …?
You can daydream, of course, but nobody knows exactly what the
world will be __like__. But
scientists have made some guesses.
Based on the advances made, they believe people will be
healthier. Diphtheria, malaria, tuberculosis, polio and many other killers are
under control now. These diseases are on the way out, __thanks__ to germ-killing chemicals, new ways of finding out about our
bodies, and new ways of providing clean, safe __food__ and water.
Healthier people live longer, so we can expect the world’s population
to __increase__
sharply. It may double in the next forty years! This brings up a serious
problem: how will we find food, water, and minerals for such a huge population?
Scientists are at work on some __solutions__. From the ocean they hope to get new
fertilizers to increase the yield of the soil; new chemicals to kill
crop-destroying insects without __harming__ other animals, new sources of water or supplies of food.

Light from the Past
When you stand and look at the stars, you are really looking at
past history. The light from Alkaid, the end star in the handle of the Big
Dipper, has taken about 210 years to __reach__ your eyes. If Alkaid stopped __shining__ today, people on earth would still see it __for__ about 210 years. Some of the stars you see here tonight may
have stopped existing several thousand years ago. The light from some __faraway__ stars right now will not be seen on earth until thousands, or
even millions, of years from now!
It’s __quite__
breathtaking, and it __adds__ to the
great mystery about the nature of light. Think about water waves. They get
smaller and smaller in amplitude as they travel. Their energy is lost in friction
among the water molecules. Think of sound waves in air. They too get weaker and
weaker because of friction among the air molecules.
But light waves stop only if they strike something, and their
energy is transferred __into__
another form. __Otherwise__, they
can go on and on, at the same terrific speed, with no loss of energy, forever!

A. Denmark, a small kingdom in northern Europe, has a lot of interesting places for tourists with children. For example, Legoland, a theme park, has become the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside its capital Copenhagen. And Copenhagen itself is world famous for its Tivoli Gardens amusement park, which opened in 1843 in, the heart of the city. The park offers ballet and circus performances, restaurants, concerts, and fireworks displays.
B. Denmark is the smallest Scandinavian country, consisting of the Jutland peninsula, north of Germany, and over 400 islands of various sizes, some inhabited and linked to the mainland by ferry or bridge. Throughout the country, low hills provide a constant change of attractive views; there are also cool and shady forests of beech trees, large areas of open land covered with rough grass, a beautiful lake district, sand dunes and white cliffs on the coast.
C. More than four-fifths of all Danes live in towns. The main cities represent a combination of medieval buildings, such as castles and cathedrals, and modern office buildings and homes. Denmark’s high standard of living and wide-ranging social services guarantee that the cities have no poor districts. Most people in the cities live in flats. But in the suburbs many also live in single-family houses.
D. Denmark’s fine beaches attract many visitors, and there are hotels and pensions in all major seaside resorts. Besides, excellent inns are to be found all over the country. Some are small and only serve local travellers, but others are adapted to the tourist and have established reputations for both international dishes and local specialities. There are also private rooms to let, usually for one night, and chalets all over Denmark.
E. There is a wide selection of places to go out in the evening, particularly in Copenhagen. Jazz and dance clubs in the capital city are top quality and world-famous performers appear regularly. There are numerous cafes, beer gardens and speciality beer bars. Entertainment available includes opera at the recently opened opera house in Copenhagen, ballet and theatre at a number of places in the larger cities, and live music of all kinds.
F. Most Danes eat four meals a day — breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a late-evening supper. Breakfast generally consists of cereal, cheese, or eggs. Dinner, which includes fish or meat, is usually the only hot meal. A traditional Danish dinner consists of roast duckling stuffed with apples, served with red cabbage and boiled potatoes. The other Danish meals consist mostly of sandwiches.
G. Almost all adult Danes can read and write. Danish law requires children to attend nine years of school. Primary school consists of the first seven grades, and secondary school lasts from three to five years. A five-year secondary school student can enter a university. Denmark has three universities. The University of Copenhagen is the oldest and largest. It was founded in 1479 and has about 24,000 students.

Sisters
‘Dear Kathy! Chance made us sisters, hearts made us friends.’ This quote is at the center of a collage of photographs — covering our twenty-something years — that now hangs in my office. My sister, Susie, made it for me as a wedding present. It probably cost very little to make (she is a starving college student, after all), but it means more to me than any of the more ‘traditional’ wedding presents my husband and I received from family and friends last June. Whenever I look at the collage, it reminds me of my sister and what a true friend she is.
Susie and I weren’t always close friends. Far from it, in fact. We shared a room for nearly fifteen years when we were younger, and at the time I thought I couldn’t have asked for a worse roommate. She was always around! If we argued and I wanted to go to my room to be alone, she’d follow me right in. If I told her to go away, she’d say right back, ‘It’s my room, too! And I can be here if I want to.’ Γd consult my mother and she usually agreed with Susie. I suppose being three years younger has its benefits.
When we were kids, she’d ‘borrow’ my dolls without asking. (And no toy was safe in her hands.) When we got older, Susie quit borrowing my toys and started borrowing my clothes. That was the final straw. I couldn’t take it anymore. I begged my parents to let me have a room of my own — preferably one with a lock on the door. The answer was always a resounding ‘no.’ ‘Please?!’ Γd beg. My parents would just shake their heads. They didn’t agree with each other on much, but for some reason they had a united front on this issue.
To crown it all, she had this habit of doing everything I did. Choirs, rock bands, sports teams, dance studios: There was no place where I was safe. ‘She looks up to you,’ my mom would say. I didn’t care. I just wanted a piece of my life that didn’t involve my little sister. When I complained to my mother, she’d just smile and say, ‘One day you’ll want her around.’ Sure.
It’s strange how mothers have this habit of being right about everything. When I was sixteen and my sister was thirteen, we went through a series of life-changing events together that would forever change our relationship. First, my parents announced that they were divorcing. My dad packed up and moved to an apartment in New Hampshire — more than a half hour drive away from our cozy house in Massachusetts. He bought me my first car and I often went with Susie to his place when we missed him a lot. During those trips we started discussing our troubles and making plans about how to reunite the family again. But a year later, our father met his future second wife and moved again; this time to Indiana. This meant we could only see him once or twice a year, as opposed to once every few weeks. That was hard.
Yet those few months changed my relationship with my sister forever. We started having more heart-to-heart talks as opposed to silly fights. Over time, she became my most cherished friend. It’s not uncommon for us to have three-hour-long telephone conversations about everything or about nothing—just laughing over memories from childhood or high school.
She’s the only person who’s been through all of the tough stuff that I’ve been through, and the only person who truly understands me. Susie and I have shared so much. She’s been my roommate, my friend, and my partner in crime. We’ve done plays together, gone to amusement parks, sang, and taken long road trips together. We’ve laughed until our sides hurt, and wiped away each others’ tears.
Even though distance separates us now, we’re closer than ever. Sisters share a special bond. They’ve seen all of your most embarrassing moments. They know your deepest, darkest secrets. Most importantly, they love you unconditionally. Γm lucky to be able to say that my little sister is my best friend. I only wish everyone could be so fortunate.

Music lessons It was a hard winter for Mother. She sometimes pleaded with Father but no one could ever tell Father anything. He continued to stand like a rock against stopping my music lessons. To A22 ______ the truth, Father had certain natural gifts for debate. In the first place his voice was powerful and stormy, and he A23 ______ to let it out at full strength. As a second gift, he was convinced at all times that his opponents were wrong. Hence, even if they won a point or two, it A24 ______ them no good, for he dragged the issue to some other ground then, where he and Truth could prevail. When Mother said it surely was plain enough that I had no ear for music, what was his reply? Why, he said that the violin was the noblest instrument A25 ______ by man. Having silenced her with this solid premise he declared no boy should expect to learn it immediately. It required persistence. Everything, he had found out, required persistence. His motto was, “Never give A26 ______ ”. He said that Mother should be stricter with me, if necessary, and make me try harder. He also said that none of us realized what he had had to go A27 ______ . Mother started to cry and said, “But you’re downtown, you don’t have to hear it”. Father was outraged. His final argument, I remember, was that my violin had cost twenty-five dollars, if I didn’t learn it, the money would be wasted, and he couldn’t afford it. But it was put to him that my younger brother Julian could learn it instead. Father was defeated, though he didn’t A28 ______ it, and I was set free. |

Margaret Old Margaret was just the kind of cook that we wanted. Lots of cooks can do rich dishes well. Margaret couldn’t. But she A22 ______ to cook simple, everyday dishes in a way that made our mouths water. Her apple-pies were the best pies I’ve ever tasted. But to A23 ______ the truth, even Margaret sometimes miscalculated. A large, royal-looking steak would be set before Father, which, upon being cut into, would turn A24 ______ to be underdone. Father’s face would darken with disappointment. He would raise his foot and stamp slowly and heavily three times on the rug. At this solemn A25 ______ , we would hear Margaret leave the kitchen below us and come up the stairs to the dining-room door. “Margaret, look at the steak.” Margaret would peer with a shocked look at the platter. She would then seize the platter and make off with it. Father and Margaret were united by the intense interest they both took in cooking. Each understood the other instinctively. I have to A26 ______ that they had a complete fellow-feeling. Mother’s great interest was in babies. She loved her children and her happiness depended A27 ______ them. She wanted to keep Father pleased somehow, and if it was too difficult or impossible she didn’t always care about even that. At table it was Father who carved the fowl, or sliced the roast lamb or beef. I liked to A28 ______ him take the knife and go at it. And usually the cooking had been as superb as the carving. Sometimes it was so perfect that Father would summon Margaret and say in a low voice, “You are a good cook”. |

A sign of weakness? What should you do when you realise that you have to apologise? Is it better to swallow your pride and say you’re sorry when somebody is waiting 32 ______ your apology? The psychologist Jack Black says that people worry that an apology will be 33 ______ as a sign of weakness, rather than as their effort to understand and make up with the opponent. But he adds that effective apologies address the person’s feelings – they don’t prove a point. As for how to do it, Professor Black has the following advice, “The right way to apologise is the way your mother taught you. Say you threw a stone at your brother. She’d have you go and 34 ______ him in the eye and say: ‘I’m sorry I threw the stone at you and I won’t do it again.’ It’s important to name what you did wrong, to show yourself as being regretful in some way and to indicate what might be different in the future.” You should 35 ______ that the number of times you’ll need to repeat the apology may vary depending on where you live. 36 ______ to preliminary data collected by Professor Black, for a minor offence, the optimal number is a single “I’m sorry”. “If the offence is large, then making two apologies seems to be the magic number for restoring trust and liking,” Jack Black says. 37 ______, if you’re British, you may need to double that. “A single ‘Sorry’ does not 38 ______ as an apology: we have to say it so many times with a lot of adjectives,” says Professor Black. |

The effect of the temperature Many people believe that office conditions can influence our work. For a 32 ______ time achieving a comfortable room temperature in hot climates was a constant struggle. Research discovered an obvious fact: finding an office temperature to 33 ______ everyone all the time is basically impossible. “Part of the problem is trying to work out the “correct” temperature. It depends 34 _______ what you’re measuring,” said researcher David House. One study 35 ______ at the impact of the room temperature on worker productivity, by tracking the activity of managers in an office. 36 ______ it measured the activity of just nine women, the results were impressive. At 25°C they were typing non-stop with an error rate of just 10%. When the temperature dropped to 20°C, they were half as productive, more than doubling the number of mistakes. But it’s not quite that simple. When students in the other study were asked to solve a math problem in either a cool or a warm room, the group in the cooler room 37 ______ in this task twice as often. It means that complex decisions are more difficult when we’re warm. When the temperature is above 27°C,we’re not so good at mathematics. In fact, the room temperature can do more than influence your productivity – it can change the way you think. Warm environments are better for creative thinking, while cooler workplaces are thought to 38 ______ people active during repetitive or monotonous tasks. |

Based on the advances made, they believe people will be healthier. Diphtheria, malaria, tuberculosis, polio and many other killers are under control now. These diseases are on the way out,

Healthier people live longer, so we can expect the world’s population to

New York City: Nostalgia for the Old Neighbourhood.
Life is made up of little things: some unimportant memories from childhood that, in fact, shaped your character. I

In a recent walk around Third Avenue my eyes

1950s and 60s when corporations replaced the old neighbourhood. In the early 1960s, the houses were pulled down. Families were forced to
