The standard test dates are on Saturdays. However, special exceptions are sometimes made for students to take the exam on a Sunday.

Many high school students will take the SAT during the spring of their junior year and/or the fall of their senior year. 

The registration deadline is approximately one month before the test date. If you miss the deadline, you will pay an additional fee for late registration.

The SAT schedule typically follows a set formula — the first Saturday in November, December, May and June; the second Saturday in October and March; and the fourth Saturday in January. 

Sunday administrations usually occur the day after each Saturday test date for students who cannot test on Saturday.

Please note that some high schools may participate in School Day Testing. This allows all students in a school to take the exam during the week in their own classrooms. Students will be told whether their high school participates in School Day Testing.

How to Register for the SAT

You can register for the SAT online or by mail. Most students will register by using the online portal provided by the CollegeBoard.

You can register for a free account on the CollegeBoard site. You will need to do the following when registering for the SAT:

1. Have a valid photo ID
2. Upload a photo of yourself when registering online
3. Pay registration fees
4. Print your admission ticket

SAT Registration Fees

It will cost your $60 to take the SAT. Some students may be eligible for a fee waiver. Some additional fees may include:

• Change test center — $25
• Cancel registration — $25
• Cancel registration late — $35
• Late registration — $30
• Additional score reports — $12 per report
• Rush score report — $31
• Get scores by phone — $15 per call
• Archived scores — $31
• Hand score verification — $55

SAT Late Registration

For SAT test takers in the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Puerto Rico, you are eligible to register late by paying an additional fee. Late registration by phone or online is usually available until approximately 11 days before the test date.

Please remember that you can take the SAT as often as you like — but you do have to pay for it each time. The SAT registration deadlines are important dates to remember — you do not want to miss registering for the test because you have forgotten the deadline.

It is also important to keep your college application deadlines in mind. You do not want to have to take the SAT after your school’s deadline.

High school students typically take their SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year. Many students also take the test a second time, usually in the fall of their senior year. 

More than half of high school students take the SAT at least twice, with most students showing an improvement in their test scores.

Other important information for U.S. students:

• The U.S. deadlines are only applicable to students who take the SAT in the United States and other U.S. territories
• If you mail your registration materials, they must be postmarked by the U.S. deadlines which expire at midnight eastern time.
• If you cannot take the test on a Saturday for religious reasons, Sunday administrations are usually scheduled the day after each Saturday test date.
• The November dates are the only ones that offer the Language with Listening tests.

SAT Test Locations – U.S. & International

The SAT must be taken at a testing site. These testing sites are usually high schools, colleges, or universities. The same goes for international students who will be taking the SAT outside of the United States.

When searching for a SAT testing center, it is important to ensure that the testing center offers the SAT on your desired date. Every location does not offer the exam for every SAT test date.

If you happen to live further than 75 miles from a testing center, you may qualify to take the exam closer to your home. 

Please keep in mind that this option is not available for every testing date and is not offered for all international locations.

At present, the table above reflects the anticipated 2022-2023 SAT test dates that have been provided by the College Board. If there are any changes to the SAT testing dates above, the table will be updated to reflect the most current information. However, it’s likely that the official SAT testing schedule will be pretty close to the one in the table above. 

Additionally, the dates listed for normal and late registration deadlines and score release dates are estimates and have not been finalized by the College Board. The dates above are based on records from previous years.

If you want to try to estimate registration deadlines and score release dates for each anticipated SAT testing date, remember this: normal registration deadlines are usually four weeks prior to a testing date, and late registration deadlines are usually two weeks before a test date. Score release dates have traditionally been thirteen days after a testing date.

Tip 1: Know Your Application Deadlines

Before you register for the SAT, take a close look at your college application deadlines. It’ll be in your best interest to choose an SAT test date that leaves you some flexible time before your college applications are due. 

Taking the SAT well in advance of your college application deadlines will also give you the chance to take the SAT again if you aren’t satisfied with your initial scores. If you plan to apply early decision or early action, it’s extra important that you register for an earlier SAT date.
