Sights of Sochi
Sochi is unique among other Russian cities because it has many aspects of a subtropical resort. Apart from the scenic Caucasus Mountains, pebble and sand beaches, the city attracts tourists with its vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant architecture. Sochi is called the Southern capital of Russia and it is difficult not to agree with it.
The fact that this city is the most southern city in our country. And in summer times it becomes «the heart» of the country.
Summer lasts here for about 6 months from May till October. The period from September till October is called «velvet summer». The sun is not so hot, though sunburn is not less efficient. The sun gives its heat more softly and that is more comfortable.
People from all country come here not only to have a rest, but for forums, festivals and summits. There is the southern residence of the President of Russia here and there are a lot of branches of many large companies. And in connection with the desire to be the place of winter Olympic games, this city attracts attention of the great investors and as a rule a number of Russian and foreign companies.
The main fact that makes Sochi the place of pilgrimage for visitors, who comes to the resort to improve health is the famous Matsesta — the deposit of hydrogensulphide sources, the legends of its medicinal properties were known for centuries.
Today Matsesta’s treatment is widely used in medicine when anyone has such illnesses: motive system, cardio-vascular system, central nervous system, nasopharynx, the mouth cavity, illnesses of knees, unfortunate accidents on work, and people who have professional illnesses.
I want to pay special attention to that fact, that Matsesta’s treatment — is individual and only if the doctor prescribed for you.
Sochi is a mounting skiing resort. The settlement Krasnaya Polyana is known as a place for mountain skiers, where in summer there is snow and you can ski and snowboards.
The sights of Sochi.
Let’s walk along the park «Riviera». It is one of the favorite places of rest for health resort visitors. There are shadow comfortable alleys of exotic trees, different attractions for grown-ups and for children, sports town. There is Green Theatre of Variety, where take place conserts of popular performers and ensembles. There is a forest meadow of Friendship, eternally green magnolias, which were planted by the political and state men of the world, the Soviet cosmonauts and the American astronauts.
There 200 meters from «Riviera park» to Komsomol public garden. At the top of the garden there is a wide-frame cinema «Sputnik».
In front of «Sputnik», to the left of the road there is a building of Sochi’s Main Post-Office which has a form of a curving horseshoe.
At the corner of Platan alley and Navagin street there is a tall hotel «Moscow». To the right of Platan alley, you can go to the Sea Terminal, Sea Port.
The frequent guests of Sochi are ships from Bulgaria, Romania, Italy, Norway, France, Greece. A lot of tourists arrive to Sochi Port. The Sochi Port connects ports of the Azov, the Black Sea and Rostov-Don. Besides in summer the Sochi Port organizes excursions on the ships of the Black Sea State Steam-Ships line.
Not far from entry to Svetlanin viaduct, connecting two banks of Vereshagin canyon you can see a marble monument to the writer — bolshevik Nikolai Ostrovski. On the monument there are his words: « The most valuable thing which has a man – it’s live. А man has one live and he must live in such way…» At the foot of the memorial there are flowers. Young couple always come here to Ostrovsky.
There is a museum of the writer. The Soviet Government presented this house to Ostrovsky in 1936. Here he spent his last months of his life and dictated the pages of his immortal novel «Born by the storm», met young people, his readers. His room is the same as it was when he was alive. There is a bed, round table of secretary, «plate» of a loud-speaker, headphones of the radio. Near there is a library. There is a type-machine «Mercedes» on the small table. On the shelves there are favourite books of writer. In the corridor on the hat-and-coat stand there is a coarse dress-coat with rhombs of a brigade commissar on the collar. This rank was given to N.Ostrovsky in 1936.
One of the most beautiful districts of Sochi is micro-district «Svetlana». It is behind the Svetlana viaduk, and there is a «sanatorium» district of the city — Hosta.
Hosta is called a pearl of the Black Sea Coast. It is situated in the valley, between high green mountains. Hosta is the centre of Russian subtropics. Winter is 1-2 degrees warmer than in the Central district of the resort, but summer is softer. The settlement is full of plants and flowers and looks as a large park. But there are a lot of sanatoriums, tall buildings, comfortable houses.
But the main sigh seeing of this micro-district is a park — «Dendrary». It is one of the most famous parks in our country such as Sukhum and Batum botany gardens, and Nikitsky in the Crimea. It was founded at the end of the ninteenth century by the journalist and publisher S.N. Khydyakov. This park becomes richer in several times. «Dendrary» is not only a collection of exotics but an ensemble of small architectural forms, where plants play the main role. Lebanon cedar, Algerian oak tree with cork bark, Mexico agava, an elephant California palm tree. Here you can see a collection of cactuses, bamboo groves, giant leaves of victoria — crusianas and an unattractive tree with small leaves. If you touch this tree, you will get a strong burn.
If you go along the underground, you will visit the Lower Dendrary. This part of the park represents flora of moderate climate zone. Maples, chestnuts and a lot of flowers are on the banks of the lake, where black swans swim.
The nature climate factors (the sun, sea, an atmosphera saturated by the oxygen), and hydrogensulphide Matsesta’s waters strengthen organism for many months.

The beaches and water parks of Sochi
No visit is complete without visiting pebble beaches. There are chairs, and the whole set of water entertainment, and cafes, and even a massage can be done on the spot. Wild beaches are not equipped, but there are less people.

To arrive in Sochi and do not visit Krasnaya Polyana ? Unforgivable! After all, that is where our athletes «fought» for Olympic gold. besides, Olympic Park deserves special attention.
Lake Riza, though located in Abkhazia, but its splendor is worth overcoming 125 kilometers. Besides, the road there goes through beautiful mountain gorges.
The Adler is interesting to visit the monkey nursery, in the terrarium; in Loo explore the ruins of the Byzantine temple; in Lazarevskoye visit the Ethnographic Museum.

Entertainment complex «Limpopo» and «Ice Club», bowling clubs, cinemas, circus, night clubs, bars, restaurants are always happy to see vacationers. Nightlife boils all year round, because Sochi is popular not only in the summer. When does the beach season, skiers arrive, many are choosing a resort for the New Year and all of the winter holidays.

I am really glad to receive your letter. Sorry, I didn’t respond to your letter right away. I am looking forward to seeing you.
As for the clothes, it’s usually cold in Russia, but it’s warm and nice in summer. You don’t need any warm clothes in summer here, just a jacket. There are tons of things can be done here. We can go sight seeing, restaurants, museums, Red Square and so on. We also can ride a steamer on Moscow river and take a special sight seeing or a bus ride. Russian food is also fantastic!
Btw, have you ever tasted Russian food before? What is your favorite food? Can you get me a souvenir from England?
Actually, I’ve got to go now. It’s time for me to prepare my dinner.

Sochi is Russia’s only subtropical resort city that stretches along the picturesque coast of the Black Sea. With a permanent population approaching 350,000, it holds the record as the largest resort city in Russia. As the unofficial capital of the Riviera of the Caucasus, its many beaches make the city popular in summer. In contrast, skiing in the nearby mountain makes it an ideal place for winter vacations.
The city is set in the Krasnodar Krai, which stretches 145 km (90 miles) along the Black Sea, making Sochi the second longest city behind only Mexico City. The resort has a long history that dates back to Ancient Greek and Roman times when the Zygii people inhabited the Area. The first Russian settlement on the site was called Fort Alexander, founded in 1838 at Sochi River’s mouth.
In fact, Sochi is a relatively new name for the city, as it was first called that in 1896. The name has two possible sources: it could be a variation of the term «sshatche,» was used by the local people to mean «place by the sea» or «shacha,» which locals used to mean «sell ahead» because the territory of the town used to be where slave markets were held.
One of the first big names to put Sochi on the map was Soviet leader Joseph Stalin — he built his favorite vacation home or dacha here. The city was also known as the «All-Union health resort» of the Soviet Union, and after the collapse of the USSR, the city was, in fact, the only Black Sea resort in Russia. It is still famous today for its recreation facilities.
Reasons to travel to Sochi
It is here that many well-to-do Russians go to rejuvenate in some of the most popular healing mineral springs in Russia. These vibrant spas are the best known of the Matsesta Sulfur Springs, renowned since antiquity as the “fiery river” springs because of the tanned hue that treatment in its waters leaves. A legend says that a local girl bravely wandered into the underworld and brought back its healing waters to the surface as a gift from the spirits below.
Natural mineral springs are a component of Sochi’s vast collection of natural attractions encompassed in the nearby Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve. The Agura and Orekhovskaya waterfalls are perhaps the most strikingly beautiful representations of these attractions. Still, the mountains also hide mysterious caves where traces exist of the first humans migrated northward through here into Neanderthal-dominated Europe some 35,000 years ago. Sochi also boasts a large trout farm, as well as a spectacular dolphinarium and aqua theater.
What is more, the air quality in Sochi is excellent, due in part to the fact that the city boasts nearly 500,000 acres of forests, with about 10,000 of those acres located in the city center! Sochi has a beautiful collection of parks, including a botanical garden and arboretum with rare and exotic species of tropical flora, as well as beautiful coastal promenades and trails.
Many local experts consider daily walks as important for the restoration of health to the body and mind, so it’s not unusual to find many strollers on scenic pedestrian byways like the gorgeous Eagle Rocks path.
Sochi also contains a special tea plantation, the only one in Russia and the northernmost in the world. Its tea-house’s picturesque view of the Black Sea from the exclusive Dagomys district provides the perfect setting for sampling Russia’s home-grown offerings. Another interesting fact about this city is that it is merely a 37-hour train ride away from Russia’s capital Moscow!
In addition to its status as a resort city, Sochi is known for its sports facilities. For example, Sochi tennis schools have trained such athletes as Maria Sharapova.
With so much local attention to health and exercise, the International Olympics Committee found Sochi to be the obvious choice to host the 2014 Winter Games.
The 22nd Winter Olympics welcomed thousands of visitors, and the attention of millions of international television viewers, to this proud resort area. The Games were a first for the Russian Federation — the Moscow Olympics of 1980 were, in fact, hosted by the Soviet Union, a now an extinct country.
The city has undergone several immense changes with billions of rubles spent preparing the city and the nearby Krasnaya Polyana skiing area for hosting this world event. All competitions took place in two areas: the newly constructed Coastal Cluster, for indoor ice events, and the Mountain Cluster — featuring a renovated Krasnaya Polyana for all downhill and skiing sports.
The two clusters are only 30 minutes apart, making the 22nd Winter Olympic games one of the most compacts ever held.
The Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix is held here until at least 2020, and Sochi is one of the host towns for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. So it is fair to say that Sochi is clearly familiar with top-notch athletes! It would be fair to say that Sochi is long used to being among the most glamorous spots in Russia.
Since 1909, Russian glitterati have thronged here, and movie stars have been a regular feature at the city’s Kinotavr Film Festival every June since 1991. The Russian president himself maintains a dacha near the tea plantation in Dagomys, which is used to entertain foreign heads of state.
