| Stray Animals |
| Home is a cosy and warm place where you can hide from bad weather, have some rest from a noise, eat some good food and sleep tight. That’s why everyone should have a roof over his head, not only human beings but also animals. |
| Wild animals dig holes, make nests and digs, hide inside hollowed trees or in the forests. But what about cats and dogs that live in the cities and are not used to wandering and don’t know where to find food or where to hide? |
| A lot of them die in the streets before they become mature. Some of them get seriously sick and their diseases can be transferred to humans or they can just get aggressive. Best case scenario they continue wandering for the rest of their lives, hide in the basements of the houses and look for food in landfills. |
| This situation is very upsetting that’s why every time I see a kitten or a puppy in the street I feel very sorry for them. I really want to pet it, feed it or take it home. |
| But you can’t take all the cats and dogs home. Luckily there are special shelters that become their home temporary. People who work their are usually volunteers that love animals and try to make their life better. |
| A lot of animals in shelters find their new home soon. People come to the shelter on their own in order to get a kitten or a puppy or sometimes they come to different charity events. |
| Of course, in our country this problem will stay important for a long time because there are many stray animals. The situation gets worse because of mean owners who throw their animals out when they are bored with them. However, I really hope that a lot of cats and dogs will find their home soon and will know what the real owner’s care is. |

There are numerous stray animals in Cadiz, Kentucky. We do not have an animal shelter where these stray animals can stay. These stray animals normally end up starving to death or like most, ran over by motor-vehicles. With an animal shelter we will have a better chance to keep animals in a safe place. It would give people a place to volunteer at, and maybe even adopt a pet if they choose to. At an animal shelter they would have all their shots and records up to date.

A shelter closer to home would be more convenient rather than hauling animals to a shelter that ranges from twenty to forty minutes away.
Animal issues differ from one neighborhood to another. One area may have problems with dog fighting or feral cats, while another has spay or neuter concerns. Of course we could lessen the chance of needing an animal shelter if more people would have their pets spayed or neutered but that has not happened yet.
Here in Cadiz, we do have a full time animal control but nowhere to put the animals besides in the back of a truck in a cage. With stray cats and dogs running around at large numbers may represent a threat to the health of people and animals owned by responsible citizens. Animals running at large, especially packs of wild dogs, may be a threat to domesticated animals, children and adults. Together these considerations express the need for an animal shelter able to serve not Cadiz, but the entire Trigg County.
Shelters are expensive, both to build and run. Local authorities can provide regular income for an organization running an animal shelter. This money can be used to cover the cost of food, cleaning, heating and equipment, salary to workers, as well as large grants to pay for building and maintenance work. However, there is not an exact amount on how much an animal shelter will cost to build or maintain.
Volunteers can perform many tasks, such as medicating sick cats, training dogs with behavior problems, walking and grooming dogs, doing routine office work and helping with adoptions. There should be a wildlife referral program for skunks, raccoons, opossums and other wild creatures who find themselves at the shelter. Creating partnerships will save the shelter time, money, effort and space. The shelter could partner with the local veterinary clinics in town such as when an animal is adopted; the adopter can be told that this particular vet has the animal’s records and medical history. The person will be likely to use the vet in the future.
National studies show that people get their dogs from shelters only 15% of the time, and less than 10% of the time for cats. These numbers can be better. Good advertising and public relations is necessary for success. Promoting the shelter will help with people volunteering and future adoptions. To help get more animals adopted you can give the animals friendly, simple names like Buddy or Molly. And for dog breeds like the pit-bull, which are normally seen as scary you can dress them up in a flowery collar. The need for more animal shelters is becoming more and more current today. Not every shelter uses euthanasia and this leads to the overflowing animals. Animal shelters are not quite big enough to hold and save every animal that is found. The lack of space in the animal shelters presents a real problem since there are many animals picked up daily.

“You can take this one for a walk first. He just arrived last night.” The beautiful German Shepherd stared up at me with listless eyes. I had no idea what his name was, or even where to walk him, but looking at his confused face, I realized he was just as bewildered as I was. I grabbed a leash from the wall and went on the first of many long walks that I would take with other rescue dogs. I had wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter all my life, but living in South Korea where shelters are nonexistent, I had never had the chance. Now, however, my family and I were staying for a long visit in the United States, and I had my chance. After researching shelters in the area of Phoenix, where we were staying, I settled on Foothills Animal Rescue.
Foothills animal rescue is a vital and important addition to the community of Scottsdale, Arizona. Every year, in the United States alone, more than five million stray animals are admitted into animal shelters, and, sadly, of that number, five out of ten are destroyed from lack of adoption. Areas such as Phoenix, Arizona contribute significantly to these statistics. Maricopa County Animal Shelter, the major animal shelter for the Phoenix area, recorded receiving approximately 200 dogs and cats each day, and 50,000 animals each year. More than four of these animals are euthanized daily, simply because the facility does not have adequate accommodations for the growing population of strays. But Foothills Animal Rescue has committed to making a change for the better to these statistics; since 2010, the shelter has adopted out 618 cats and 552 dogs.

The Essay on A new animal shelter to benefit the communtiy
Northview Animal Clinic will be Opening a Shelter to House Stray and Abused Animals A new animal shelter will be opening in the local community. This animal shelter will be opening with the intent of being able to serve the stray and abused animals of the area. The animal shelter is being opened as part of a current clinic and will be funded by donations as well as grants that have been applied …
As a “no kill” shelter which takes in animals from multiple rescues, the public, as well as the local humane society, Foothills Animal Rescue understands that animals do not deserve to die simply because they have no home. Equipped with three non-cage cat rooms for kittens, grown cats, and those diagnosed with Feline Leukemia, ten spacious dog rooms, and a well equipped clinic, FAR can provide a true haven to animals, both short term and long term. Every animal that is taken in is given the best medical attention available, and automatically spayed or neutered. Each animal also receives a full round of vaccinations and is implanted with a microchip. Unlike many over-populated shelters anxious to place their animals in any home, FAR carefully screens potential adopters. Adoptees are judged on their care of previous pets, the amount of time they can dedicate to a new pet, and whether the size of their house is appropriate to the needs of the pet. With the adoption of a dog, the new owners receive a full medical history of the animal and thirty days of free pet insurance. Unlike other shelter, FAR goes an extra step and insists that should a change of situation occur, the pet is returned to the shelter in order to ensure the safest, happiest life for the animal.
Relying entirely on volunteers, donations, and the income of a nearby resale store, FAR still manages to create a enriching environment for the animals. Such amenities as indoor and outdoor play areas ensure that dogs always get their much needed romp. Large playgrounds keep the cats constantly entertained while music provides a calm environment for frequent napping. In addition, the shelter takes adoptable animals to weekly functions at popular pet stores. The shelter also provides educational tours and other community-awareness events on a regular basis. All of these efforts help to improve the plight of the many stray animals in need of stable, happy homes.
On my first day at the shelter, I walked, bathed, and fed dogs, cleaned their rooms, played with cats, and did whatever other odd jobs were needed. As I came daily, my confidence grew, and I began to feel at home at the shelter. I loved learning more about the care of the animals, and seeing how the shelter could make a positive change for any and every dog. There was Bella, the Great Dane, who had been adopted out, and then returned, due to family issues. Her spirit was broken, and you could see the sadness in her face; she had lost her trust in humans. But slowly, she began to warm to gentle care again, and soon she was given a happy home. Then there was Teddy, an adorable mixed breed who had been at the shelter for almost six months. I was so happy the day he was finally adopted I also loved being with the cats, especially the kittens, even though I was mildly allergic to them. I have never felt so proud as when an especially shy kitten I had been trying to befriend for weeks came and sat on my lap. Every dog and cat had a unique story and character and it was really amazing to be part of their stories.

The Essay on Personal Reflection On Work Experience – Lost Dogs Home
To be interested in dogs is one thing, but to get your self up early, every morning of your career just to clean, feed and look after dogs isn’t the easiest thing in the word too do. But on the other hand, if you do enjoy spending time with dogs and working along side people of all types this might just be the job you could be interested in, work experience gives you the opportunity you need …
No one shelter can “cure” the epidemic of irresponsible pet ownership in the United States, but FAR has made a true difference in lives of local animals. Many animals whose “time has run out” find refuge in the shelter where they are rehabilitated, socialized, and placed with a loving owner. The basic luxuries of a safe, stable environment with the promise of a “fur-ever home” are enough to give these abandoned and abused pets a second chance. Foothills Animal Rescue, though small and limited, meets a genuine need.
There are so many different ways to help when volunteering at the animal shelter, and I had the opportunity to experience many of these options. Not only do shelters need volunteers daily to assist in taking care of the animals basic needs, but assistants in on-site and off-site adoptions, those who can do office paper work, and fosters are also needed. Unlike volunteers who only stay with the dogs a few hours a day or even a week, a foster’s responsibility is twenty-four hours a day, until the dog gets adopted. Not only must you care for the basic needs of the dog, but also try to make him a better candidate for adoption. This involves working on behavioral issues such as aggression, fear, barking, or biting.
I had the privilege of fostering three dogs, a black lab-mix named Abel, who had a rough past, having lived in shelters most of his life with his violent brother. Before he could go to his new home, Abel had to learn how to live in a house with a family. The next dog I fostered was a sweet, timid Cairn Terrier named Tyler. I didn’t have him long (he was so cute, no one could resist adopting him!) but I loved that I got to help him get settled. My final foster dog was an elderly Jack Russel named Vincent. I had Vincent the longest, and enjoyed taking him on his first trip to a dog park ever, helping him learn basic tricks, and ultimately finding him a good home.

The Essay on Animals in our life
Animals play an extremely important part in the lives of humans. We may not realize how much impact animals have on our lives. They have played various roles; that of a friend, companion, protector, comforter, and more. Addressing people who are not animal lovers, I would say it is very difficult to explain what joy an animal can bring to one’s life. Pets impact human lives on a face-to-face basis …
When it finally came time for me to return home to South Korea and leave FAR, it was with a heavy heart. I had gone almost every week-day and accumulated 150 hours, but I never had done it for the hours. I had learned so many things from the dogs, cats, and staff at the shelter, and had formed good friends, both canine and human. Overall, volunteering at the animal rescue was one f the most rewarding experiences of my life. I hope that some day I
can return and that you too will see what a difference volunteering at an animal shelter can make in your life and the lives of needy animals.

This is a rough draft for my English 101 class. We were able to write an essay on anything, and I chose adopting from animal shelters. I only got 80 points out of 120, I knew it wasn’t that good, but I didn’t think it was that bad either.
At some point in time I think everyone entertains the idea of getting a pet, either their child wants a dog or they just want the companionship of a cat. There are many ways to get your new pet, but which do you choose and why? Should you go for the adorable kittens and puppies at the pet store or do you go to the local shelter, where the animals may not look as cute and desirable to you. You think, «It doesn’t really matter where I get it from, I am saving a life either way, right?»
4 million shelter animals die year after year. There are so many advantages to adopting, not only are you saving a life, but you will already know the temperament of the animal, you will be able to know if it can coexist with children or your other pets. You are also saving tons of money. Depending on the breed a pet store will charge you hundreds of dollars, while a shelter should generally cost you under $100, and the money goes to a good cause by helping to buy food and helps keep the shelter running, so in a way you are saving more than one life.
Pet store animals come from puppy mills. These animals sole purpose is to make money by breeding. They are crammed into cages with no proper care at all, barely lucky enough to get something as basic as food and water. Many of them have genetic diseases, which can be passed onto their offspring and in the end that will end up costing a surprise vet bill after the puppy finally begins to show symptoms of said disease.
Buying from a pet shop is definitely easier and less time consuming, all you have to do is walk in, pick the one you want, pay, then leave. Pretty much making it seem like you are purchasing something as simple as groceries. The shelter process is so much different, they care enough to take the time to pick out the right family for each individual animal, they meet and interview everyone in your household to make sure it is a perfect match.
To answer the original question, «I am saving a life either way, right?» It is all about supply and demand. The more you buy,the more they will produce, while millions of animals are dying.
Here are my instructors comments. «What’s the main idea? Why do you want me to read about pets? Who is the audience and why? The first paragraph does not clealry indicate what the essay is going to be about, beyond the general notion of ‘pets’.»
I thought my main idea and audience were pretty clear.
What can I do to make my final draft better?
Homeless Animals – Essay Sample
Imagine you are alone on the street. You have nowhere to go, there is no one waiting for you or worrying about you anywhere in the whole city. You are so hungry that each movement seems to be unmanageable. There are hundreds of people going by, yet you cannot talk to them, they do not even notice you are suffering badly while lying here on a cold pavement, unaided, neglected, exhausted… If animals are able to think and feel which is quite possible, that is probably what numerous homeless dogs and cats you are passing during the day are experiencing. Is it fair though? And do we really have right to close the eyes to the fact of numerous living being suffering and struggling for life completely ignored and abandoned? I believe strongly in humans’ responsibility to protect those who are in need, and I claim that all humans have an ethical obligation to provide help to those who are so much dependent on us, to animals deprived of essential care and love.
These days millions of animals are stray, lost, or in shelters. Statistics of animals being euthanized or chucked out provided by official organizations is dreadful and, unfortunately, the numbers are rising every day. The problem of homeless and displaced animals is a huge one. Shelters today are overloaded. Domestic animals are left on the roadside doomed to take care for themselves. Pet shops and breeders carry on selling animals to the general public without considering the conditions or quality of life animals are put into after leaving the shops’ doors.
Most people enjoy taking care of animals. They even feel some sort of emotional connection with their domestic pets, treating them like rational creatures endowed with emotions, able to realize some facts and to experience sentiments. However, an animal we meet on the street we regard as being a beast, dull and primitive, deprived of any ability to feel. Just take few minutes to realize the dreadfulness of conditions they are doomed to struggle in. What if they actually are able to “think” and “feel”? Just imagine what they are going through.
Unlike homeless people, homeless animals have never had any choice. Most of them were either born already homeless or abandoned by their rightful owners. Animals that are kept in normal conditions never escape their homes. They cannot get addicted to alcohol or drugs; they cannot lose their job because of law-breaking practices or gamble their property away. Can they talk, or express dissatisfaction, or ask for help? They can only watch you passing by with those sad, hungry, sometimes wild eyes. However, their inability to express feelings, fears and pains doesn’t mean they have none. They need help just as any other suffering living beings do, and their being silent in no way means they wouldn’t cry for help if they could.
Most people justify own inaction by seemingly reasonable arguments such as “We cannot help everyone”, “We do not want to help someone unable to appreciate what we do for them”, “There should be some governmentally regulated system, spontaneous actions are ineffective”, etc. Personally I cannot understand how all those reasons comfort and prevent humans from providing at least elementary help. No doubts, the process of providing aid is much more efficient if being organized and systematized properly. However, it would be enough for one to get interested and to look around in order to notice that nowadays there are numerous nonprofit organizations that could harness one’s willingness to submit a helping hand to make the whole situation better. If being ready and able to help, you can face various options among which you are free to choose. You can make donations to official nonprofit organizations, participate in adoption programs, provide assistance to shelters, etc. – your choice will depend on what resources you own and how serious your intentions are.
We all have to finally look around and realize: homeless animals cry out for help, and we have to provide them with necessary aid. Humans should take care of whom they have tamed, since, as one little fox has once said “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” It is up to all of us to turn this world into a nicer place for domestic animals. Making city streets look better by killing off innocent creatures is just a way too cruel to be ignored. So shouldn’t we finally put our humaneness into practice and justify our right to rule the world? I guess we should, and that is our moral obligation.
