1. The Best Way of Learning
2. Key Factor in Learning
3. Linguistic Interference
4. Universal Language

5. Online Learning
6. Language Extinction
7. Learning by Imitation
8. Sign Language

A. Young children have a genetic ability to learn language. They come into the world as eager learning machines, and language acquisition is a major aspect of this learning. How children actually learn language is not entirely clear, however. Most linguists believe that they do it primarily by listening to and trying to communicate with adult speakers. Initially, this means that they copy the way adults use words and grammar.

B. Learning a second or third language is easier in early childhood than later. It is particularly important to learn correct pronunciation as young as possible. At any age, learning by constant contact with native speakers in their own society is the quickest and the most effective method. It is superior to taking foreign language classes because it forces you to concentrate on it all of the time.

C. Learning a second language can be affected by the patterns of the first language. There can be some blending of phonemes. For instance, most Americans who learn French in high school or college pronounce French words with a distinctive American accent. Grammar can also be affected. English speakers who learn both French and Spanish sometimes combine grammatical rules of both when speaking either of them.

D. Until just a few years ago, language study was limited to the classroom or personal tutor, or home study by book. In the last few decades technology has given us a much needed audio option — first vinyl records, then cassettes and CDs. Now technology has given us a new format — the Internet. Options to learn a language by Internet are still limited but the potential is not.

E. What is important when learning a language? If you have the desire and persistence, time is the only factor that you may have to work with. How much time you can devote to learning will play a role in how quickly you can learn the language. Just remember how exciting it will be and how rewarding you will feel at the accomplishment.

F. Rather than have businessmen, diplomats, scientists and tourists from every country learning all the major languages that they want to learn or need to learn, Esperantists would have everyone just learn one second language — Esperanto. Then everyone could communicate with everyone, everywhere. The major ‘national’ languages could keep their special characteristics for anyone who wanted to learn them. This is the essence of the ‘Esperanto Movement’.

G. More than half of the world’s 7,000 languages are expected to die out by the end of the century, often taking with them irreplaceable knowledge about the natural world. When a species dies out, sometimes fossils can be found, remains uncovered. But when a human language disappears, there’s rarely any key left behind. Each loss becomes a linguistic black hole, where an entire way of knowing the world disappears.

That summer an army of crickets started a war with my father. They picked a fight the minute they invaded our cellar. Dad didn’t care for bugs much more than Mamma, but he could tolerate a few spiders and assorted creepy crawlers living in the basement. Every farm house had them. A part of rustic living, and something you needed to put up with if you wanted the simple life.

He told Mamma: ‘Now that we’re living out here, you can’t be jerking your head and swallowing your gum over what’s plain natural, Ellen.’ But she was a city girl through and through and had no ears when it came to defending vermin. She said a cricket was just a noisy cockroach, just a dumb horny bug that wouldn’t shut up. No way could she sleep with all that chirping going on! Then to prove her point she wouldn’t go to bed. She drank coffee and smoked my father’s cigarettes and she paced between the couch and the TV. Next morning she threatened to pack up and leave, so Dad drove to the hardware store and hurried back. He squirted poison from a jug with a spray nozzle. He sprayed the basement and all around the foundation of the house. When he had finished, he told us that was the end of it.

But what he should have said was: ‘This is the beginning’. For the next fourteen days Mamma kept finding dead crickets in the clean laundry. She’d shake out a towel or a sheet and a dead black cricket would roll across the linoleum. Sometimes the cat would corner one, and swat it around like he was playing hockey, then carry it away in his mouth. Dad said swallowing a few dead crickets wouldn’t hurt as long as the cat didn’t eat too many.

Soon live crickets started showing up in the kitchen and bathroom. Mamma freaked because she thought they were the dead crickets come back to haunt, but Dad said they were definitely a new batch, probably coming up on the pipes. He fetched his jug of poison and sprayed beneath the sink and behind the toilet and all along the baseboard until the whole house smelled of poison, and then he sprayed the cellar again, and then he went outside and sprayed all around the foundation leaving a foot-wide moat of poison.

For a couple of weeks we went back to finding dead crickets in the laundry. Dad told us to keep a sharp look out. He suggested that we’d all be better off to hide as many as we could from Mamma. I fed a few dozen to the cat who I didn’t like because he scratched and bit for no reason. I hoped the poison might kill him so we could get a puppy. Once in a while we found a dead cricket in the bathroom or beneath the kitchen sink. A couple of weeks later, when both live and dead crickets kept turning up, Dad emptied the cellar of junk. He borrowed Uncle Burt’s pickup and hauled a load to the dump. Then he burned a lot of bundled newspapers and magazines which he said the crickets had turned into nests.

He stood over that fire with a rake in one hand and a garden hose in the other. He wouldn’t leave it even when Mamma sent me out to fetch him for supper. He wouldn’t leave the fire, and she wouldn’t put supper on the table. Both my brothers were crying. Finally she went out and got him herself. And while we ate, the wind lifted some embers onto the wood pile. The only gasoline was in the lawn mower fuel tank but that was enough to create an explosion big enough to reach the house. Once the roof caught, there wasn’t much anyone could do.

After the fire trucks left, I made the mistake of volunteering to stay behind while Mamma took the others to Aunt Gail’s. I helped Dad and Uncle Burt and two men I’d never seen before carry things out of the house and stack them by the road. In the morning we’d come back in Burt’s truck and haul everything away. We worked into the night and we didn’t talk much, hardly a word about anything that mattered, and Dad didn’t offer any plan that he might have for us now. Uncle Burt passed a bottle around, but I shook my head when it came to me. I kicked and picked through the mess, dumb struck at how little there was to salvage, while all around the roar of crickets magnified our silence.

I studied Mandarin Chinese 50 years ago. It took me nine months to reach a level where I could translate newspaper editorials from English to Chinese and from Chinese to English, read novels and interpret for people, I did this in the age of the open-reel tape recorder, long before the age of the Internet, online dictionaries, language learning apps, MP3 files and YouTube.

If I reflect on what I did, I find that there were six things that helped me learn faster than other students who were studying with me. Below I list each of these tips on how to learn Chinese which you may want to apply to your studies.

My Six Tips on How to Learn Chinese:

Listen to Mandarin as Often as Possible

The first month or maybe two, just focus on listening.

Start out by focusing on listening. Just get used to the sounds. You should read whatever you are listening to, but do so using a phonetic writing system, such as Pinyin, in order to get a better sense of what you are hearing. You will have to learn the characters eventually but you can leave the characters out at first, and instead, try to get a little momentum in the language.

It’s too difficult to start learning characters when you don’t have any sense of the words, what they sound like, or how they work together. A new language can sound like undifferentiated noise at the beginning. The first step is to become accustomed to the individual sounds of the language, to learn to differentiate words from each other, and even to have a few words and phrases reverberating in your brain.

My first introduction to Mandarin was listening to Chinese Dialogues, an intermediate text with no characters, just romanization, in this case the Yale version of romanization. Today Pinyin, developed in China, has become the standard form of romanization for Mandarin. In Chinese Dialogues, the narrator spoke so fast I thought he was torturing us. But it worked. After a month or so I was used to the speed and had a sense of the language.

As an aside, I think it is a good idea to begin learning a language with intermediate level texts that include a lot of repetition of vocabulary, rather than overly simple beginner texts. Podcasts and audio books are great for this. The Mandarin Chinese mini- stories at LingQ are an example of the kind of point of view stories, with a great deal of repetition of high frequency verbs, that are available today. These were not available to me 50 years ago. Watching movies and TV shows is another excellent way to get lots of Chinese listening in.

With a sense of this exciting new language and some aural comprehension, my motivation to learn the characters grew. I wanted to know the characters for the words that I had been listening to and getting used to.

So that is tip number one, to focus on listening and Pinyin for the first month or two.

Devote Time to Memorizing Characters

The study of Chinese, Mandarin Chinese, is a long term project. It will bring you in touch with the language and the culture of well over 20% of humanity and a major influence on world history. For this reason, I always recommend learning Chinese characters if you are going to learn the language.

Once you decide to study Chinese characters,  work at them every day. Devote half an hour to an hour a day just on learning characters. Use whatever method you want, but set aside dedicated character learning time every day. Why every day? Because you will forget the characters almost as quickly as you learn them, and therefore need to relearn them again and again.

You may want to use Anki or some other modern computer based learning system. I developed my own spaced repetition system. I had a set of 1,000 small cardboard flashcards with the most frequent 1000 characters. I had sheets of squared paper to practice writing these characters. I would pick up one card, and write the character 10 times down one column on the squared paper and then write the meaning or pronunciation a few columns over. Then I would pick up another flashcard and do the same. Soon I ran into the meaning or sound of the previous character that I had written there. I then wrote that character out again a few times, hopefully before I had completely forgotten it. I did this for the first 1000 characters. After that I was able to learn them by reading, discovering new characters,  and randomly writing them out by hand a few times.

As we progress, learning new characters becomes easier because so many elements repeat in the characters. The characters all have “radicals”, components which give a hint of the meaning of a character. There are also components of the characters which suggest the sound. These radicals are helpful to acquiring the characters, although not at first. As with so much in language learning, too much explanation upfront is a distraction to acquiring the language. I found that the efforts of teachers to explain these radicals and other components at the early stages of my learning were not to great avail. I didn’t understand them. Only after enough exposure did I start to notice the components and that sped up my learning of the characters.

Tip number two is to really put a constant and dedicated effort into learning characters.

Recognize Patterns Rather than Rules

Focus on patterns. Don’t get caught up in complicated grammar explanations, just focus on patterns. When I was studying we had a wonderful book by Harriet Mills and P.S. Ni. It was called Intermediate Reader in Modern Chinese. In every single lesson they introduced patterns and to me that’s how I sort of got a sense of how the language worked. The patterns were the frames around which I could build whatever I wanted to say.

I have absolutely no sense of Chinese grammar, or grammar terms, yet I am quite fluent. I have seen books that introduce special grammar terms for Chinese. I don’t think they are necessary. It is better to get used to the patterns that Chinese uses to express things that we express in English using English patterns. Chinese has a rather uncomplicated grammar, one of the pleasures of learning Chinese. There are no declensions, conjugations, genders, verb aspects, complicated tenses or other sources of confusion that are found in many European languages.

Tip number three is to focus on patterns, write them out, say them to yourself, use them when speaking or writing, and watch for them when you listen and read.

If you would like a free grammar resource to help supplement your learning, then I recommend LingQ’s Chinese grammar resource.

Read More than You Can Handle

Read a lot. If I learned faster than my fellow students 50 years ago, it is because I read everything I could get my hands on. I read much more than other students. I am not just talking about special texts for learners, but rather a wide range of material on subjects of interest to me. I was helped by the fact that the Yale-in-China had a great series of readers with glossaries for each chapter. We started with learner material using something called Chinese Dialogues, then graduated to a graded history text called 20 Lectures on Chinese Culture.

20 Lectures was a fascinating opportunity for me to learn about Chinese history and culture while learning the language. The book consisted only of texts and a glossary, no complicated explanations, no quizzes. When I look at some of the text books available today aimed at intermediate and even advanced learners, they are full of boring content about fictional people in China, somebody at university who met his friend or went to the barber or went skating, followed by explanations and drills. Not a good idea unless you are interested in these subjects.

I graduated from 20 Lectures on Chinese Culture to Intermediate Reader in Modern Chinese out of Cornell University. This was a reader with authentic texts from modern Chinese politics and history. Each lesson introduced patterns and kept drills and explanations to a minimum. Or maybe I just ignored them.

Yale had a wide collection of readers on politics, history, and literature, all with word lists for each chapter. This was my learning material. The availability of word list per chapter meant that I didn’t have to consult a Chinese dictionary. Before the advent of Alec Tronic or online dictionaries, it was very time-consuming and painful to consult a Chinese dictionary. Since we forget most of the things we look up in the dictionary, this was a tremendous waste of time.

I built up my vocabulary using these readers with word lists and finally was able to read a book without vocabulary lists, just ignoring the characters and words that I did not know. After seven or eight months I read my first novel, Rickshaw Boy or 骆驼祥子, which is a famous novel of life in present day Beijing during the turbulent first half of the 20th century, written by Lao She.

Tip number four is to read as much as you can. This is much easier to do today. You can find material on the Internet, use online dictionaries and apps like LingQ.

Get the Rhythm of the Language to Master the Tones

Focus on listening. I tried to listen to whatever content I was reading. Reading helps you learn vocabulary, but listening helps you connect with the language and get prepared to speak. Listening comprehension is the core skill necessary in order to engage in conversation with people.

One  of the challenges of Mandarin is the tones. We learn the tone of each character as we acquire vocabulary, but it is difficult to remember these when speaking. It is important to internalize the tones as part of phrases. Listening helps you do this. The intonation and rhythm of Mandarin, or any other language, can only come from listening to the native speaker. You can’t learn it theoretically.

In particular I found listening to traditional Chinese comic dialogues, Xiang Sheng, 相声, a great way to get the rhythm of the language and of the tones, since these performers exaggerate the intonation. Nowadays you can find these online, including the transcripts and even import them into a system like LingQ. This was not available to me 50 years ago.

In fact, there is a tremendous array of listening material available for download on all possible subjects, or you can buy CDs if you are in China. In our modern world, all the material you find on the Internet, or material you may find in CDs, can be converted into downloadable audio files which you can have with you wherever you go on an MP3 player or a smart phone. Constant listening, even for short periods of five or 10 minutes while you’re waiting somewhere, can dramatically increase the time available for learning any language, including Mandarin Chinese.

This was not available to me 50 years ago. I literally had to sit in front of my open reel tape recorder with my earphones on. The situation has changed dramatically. I had to search bookstores for audio content to listen to on my tape recorder. Today there is no limit to the material you can find, and there is no limit to where and when you can listen.

Take advantage and listen whenever you can. That is tip number 5.

Speak a lot and Don’t Second Guess Yourself

The individual sounds of Mandarin are not difficult for an English speaker to make. The tones are a different story. You will need to practice a lot, both speaking to yourself and speaking to others. Practice imitating what you are listening to. Find texts for which you have the audio. Listen to a phrase or sentence, then try to imitate the intonation, without worrying too much about individual sounds. You may even want to record yourself to compare. If you can get “infected” with the rhythm of the language, not only will your control of tones improve, but your choice of words will also become more native like.

When you speak, don’t second guess yourself on tones, or any other aspect of the language. Just let the words and phrases you have heard and practiced flow out, mistakes and all. Every time you use the language you are practicing and getting used to it. If you enjoy interacting in Chinese, if you enjoy getting in the flow, singing to the rhythm, then your Mandarin will continue to improve.

Don’t worry about mastering pronunciation at the beginning. We cannot pronounce what we don’t hear, nor imitate sounds and intonation that don’t resonate with us. In order to build up the ability to hear the language and to feel the music of the language, we simply have to listen to hundreds or even thousands of hours and allow the brain to get used to the new language. You can’t rush this process. Instead you should trust the fact that you will gradually and naturally get better. Therefore whatever stage you are at in Mandarin, just speak without fear and trust your instincts. If you continue your reading and listening activities, and if you continue speaking, your speaking skills will naturally improve.

Here you can read about: The best way to learn a language.

So my sixth and last tip is just go for it and you’ll get the rhythm.

Good luck!

Speaker A: I live in a small town where there are few opportunities to learn such an exotic language as Chinese. I don’t think textbooks and internet podcasts are enough to start learning such a difficult language. You still need a teacher. I hope one day I’ll be able to learn Chinese because it’s an exciting language, very beautiful, and a great way to train your brain. Moreover, if you speak Chinese well enough, you have a wider choice in the job market.

Speaker B: I honestly don’t understand why people choose to learn Chinese as a foreign language. They say there are a lot of native speakers of Chinese, but in my opinion, European languages are the ones of business, art and literature. Besides, Chinese is incredibly hard, as it’s composed of pictograms and semi-phonetic ideograms. So, it’s difficult, impractical, and it’s also impossible to find a good textbook or a professional teacher to learn it.

Speaker C: When I tell people that I learn Chinese, they are usually very surprised, because they think Chinese is a very difficult language to learn. They are even more surprised when I say it’s a stereotype. Well, I admit there are languages easier to learn than Chinese, but still, apart from the writing system, it’s not that hard. Chinese has no cases, no genders, and simple grammar. It also treats tenses in a very simplistic way, unlike other languages.

Speaker D: The Chinese language is high in demand now, so my parents advised me to try and learn it. School is not difficult for me, so I have a lot of free time on my hands. I think I’ll try learning Chinese, and I hope I’ll be good at it. The truth is, of all the things you can do with your spare time, learning Mandarin Chinese is one of the best investments you can make. I’m sure it will look good on my CV, and will help me to climb the career ladder.

Speaker E: I want to try to learn Chinese. There are courses of Chinese in our local linguistics center. So, I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for me. I’ve read it on the Internet that now there are very effective ways to learn Chinese faster with the help of computer programs. Huge dictionaries and poorly recorded tapes have long been forgotten. I hope computer based learning will help me master the Chinese language quicker, and without problems.

Speaker F: Not many people know this, but while much of the world shares a common online space, this is not the case for China. Due to government restrictions, and the ever-present language barrier, China’s internet sites are largely inaccessible to outsiders. The Chinese internet is full of its own unique multi-media, memes, and other content virtually unknown to the rest of the world. I want to have access to this stuff, so I do my best to learn Chinese.

Speaker A
Foreign languages are very popular nowadays, and it’s not surprising that people want to master them. Today there are lots of ways that make it possible to learn a foreign language and every person chooses what suits them best. There is no shortcut for faster learning, though; it takes the time it takes. The way I learnt Romanian was watching TV in English with Romanian subtitles. Subtitles helped me pick up Romanian words from sentences. It took about a hundred hours or so, but I can now read Romanian and understand the spoken language without having to put any work in it.

Speaker В
In my opinion, the only way you’ll ever truly learn a language is going to the country that speaks that language. I had studied German for four years, but after I spent two months in France, I spoke French much better than German despite all the time and effort I had spent learning it. Travel alone and refuse to be helped in your language. Stay for at least three months at the same place. At first you will feel frustrated but this is normal and you’ll soon get used to the language. I personally speak five languages, and I have never been to a language class.

Speaker С
In my opinion, the fastest and the best way to learn a language is to live in the country where it is spoken. However, not everyone can afford studying abroad. If you can’t do that, I believe that taking classes is an effective way as well. I don’t think it’s a good idea to try and learn a foreign language by yourself, I mean, sure, you can do that as a well as taking classes, but I do think it’s very hard to do it without any help. It is much easier if you have a teacher or a tutor, whom you can ask questions and ask for advice.

Speaker D
My preferred method is using a good textbook with both grammar lessons and vocabulary. Read the lessons and learn new words. Then practise using them with the exercises provided in the textbook. This is an accelerated way of learning, and it’s entirely possible. When starting a new language, memorizing a hundred words per day will come quite naturally. I recommend never falling below 50 words per day and keep them in your working memory. And make sure that the words you learn are the ones that people use commonly, learning odd and rare words is not effective if you are trying to learn quickly.

Speaker E
You can’t learn a language from books, you should hear it sound. While studying French at the University, I religiously listened to the cassette tapes that accompanied our textbook, and it really helped me to better learn the language. Listening doesn’t take up your time. Load the language into your ipod, walkman or whatever is convenient, and just listen to it at home while cooking dinner or in the car on the way to uni. Memorising words is not an effective way to learn languages. You can’t learn a language without speaking it. The only thing you should do is to find some kind of actual verbal interaction, so as to see how the language really works in everyday conversation. I used to know a couple of students who helped each other learn languages. One knew Spanish and wanted to learn English, the other knew English, and wanted to improve his Spanish. They divided the week in half. For half a week they only spoke Spanish and the rest of the time they spoke English. They both improved rapidly.

I. Задания на аудирование.

Задание 1.

A.Young children have a genetic ability to learn language. They come into the world as eager learning

machines, and language acquisition is a major aspect of this learning. How children actually learn

language is not entirely clear, however. Most linguists believe that they do it primarily by listening to

and trying to communicate with adult speakers. Initially, this means that they copy the way adults use

words and grammar.

B.Learning a second or third language is easier in early childhood than later. It is particularly important

to learn correct pronunciation as young as possible. At any age, learning by constant contact with

native speakers in their own society is the quickest and the most effective method. It is superior to

taking foreign language classes because it forces you to concentrate on it all of the time.

C.Learning a second language can be affected by the patterns of the first language. There can be some

blending of phonemes. For instance, most Americans who learn French in high school or college

pronounce French words with a distinctive American accent. Grammar can also be affected. English

speakers who learn both French and Spanish sometimes combine grammatical rules of both when

speaking either of them.

D .Until just a few years ago, language study was limited to the classroom or personal tutor, or home

study by book. In the last few decades technology has given us a much needed audio option — first

vinyl records, then cassettes and CDs. Now technology has given us a new format — the Internet.

Options to learn a language by Internet are still limited but the potential is not.

E.What is important when learning a language? If you have the desire and persistence, time is the only

factor that you may have to work with. How much time you can devote to learning will play a role in

how quickly you can learn the language. Just re member how exciting it will be and how rewarding

you will feel at the accomplishment.

F.Rather than have businessmen, diplomats, scientists and tourists from every country learning all the

major languages that they want to learn or need to learn, Esperantists would have everyone just learn

one second language — Esperanto. Then everyone could communicate with everyone, everywhere.

The major ‘national’ languages could keep their special characteristics for anyone who wanted to learn

them. This is the essence of the ‘Esperanto Movement’.

G.More than half of the world’s 7,000 languages are expected to die out by the end of the century,

often taking with them irreplaceable knowledge about the natural world. When a species dies out,

sometimes fossils can be found, remains uncovered. But when a human language disappears, there’s

rarely any key left behind. Each loss becomes a linguistic black hole, where an entire way of knowing

the world disappears.

What is the quickest and the most effective method of learning a language?

How can learning a second language be affected?

What are the difficulties of learning languages?

How does technology help us to learn a language?

What is the essence of the ‘Esperanto Movement’?

What happens when a human language disappears?

Задание 2.

A. Foreign languages are very popular nowadays, and it is not surprising that people want to master

them. Today there are lots of ways that makes it possible to learn a foreign language. And every person

chooses what suits them best. There is no shortcut for faster learning, though it takes the time, it takes.

The way I learnt Romanian was watching TV in English with Romanian subtitles. Subtitles help me

pick up Romanian words from sentenses. It took about a hundred hours or so, but I can now read

Romanian and understand the spoken language without having put any work in it.

B.In my opinion the only way you will ever truly learn a language is going to the country that speaks

that language. Stay for at least three months at the same place at first you will feel frustrated but this is

normal and you will soon get used to the language and I have never been to a language class.

C. In my opinion the fastest and the quickest way to learn a language is to live in the country where it

is spoken. However, not everyone can afford studying abroad if you can’t do that I believe that taking

classes is an effective way as well. I don’t think it is a good idea to try and learn a foreign language by

yourself, I mean, sure, you can do that as well as taking classes, but I do think it is very hard to do it

without any help. It is much easier if you have a teacher or a tutor, whom you can ask questions and

ask for advice.

D.My preferred method is using a good textbook with both grammar lessons and vocabulary. Read the

lessons and learn new words. Then practice using them with the exercise provided in the textbook.

This is an accelerated way of learning and it is entirely possible. When starting a new language,

memorizing a hundred words per day will come quite naturally. I recommend never falling below 50

words per day and keep them in your working memory. And make sure that the words you learn are the

ones that people use commonly, learning odd and rare words is not effective if you are trying to learn

quickly.

E.You can’t learn a language from books, you should hear it sound. While studying French at the

University, I religiously listened to the cassette tapes that accompanied our textbooks and it really

helped me to better learn a languge.Listening doesn’t take up your time. Load the language into your

ipod, walkman or whatever is convenient and just listen to it at home while cooking dinner or in the

car on the way to uni. You can also listen to foreign pop music. You know, French sounds are rather

difficult and singing French songs really helped me improve my pronunciation.

F.Memorizing words is not an effective way to learn languages. You can’t learn language without

speaking it. The only thing you should do is to find some kind of actual verbal interaction so as to see

how the language really works in everyday conversation. I used to know a couple of students who

II. Задания для развития и совершенствования навыков чтения про себя и

устной речи.

Задание 1.

1)

Прочитайте текст про себя. Установите соответствие между заголовками А—Н и текстами

1—7. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

2)

Переведите тексты на русский язык

3)

Перескажите тексты своими словами

1.

Recognize your limitations

2.

Take a Rest

3.

Clear Out Distractions

4.

Have Help Handy

5.

Plan Your Work

6.

Stay Calm Under Pressure

7.

Work With Interest

8.

Stay Focused

A. The overriding idea is to go for simplicity. A quiet basement, a library table or the ground next to a

big tree outside allow you to focus on what you’re doing. Examples of poor locations would include the

kitchen table, common areas where you’re likely to en- counter friends, or even your own room, as it’s

usually stocked with a computer, television, and video games that seem a lot more appealing than what

you’re doing. You have to remove yourself far enough from any potential disturbance. This is the key to

any successful session of work.

B. Making your work relates to your leisure activities or hobbies eliminates much of the tedium

associated with it. Whenever possible, make your schoolwork centre around something you love, and

run with it. Essay assignment? Write about your favourite hobby. History report? Write about your

favourite historical battle. Just pick anything to make your reports and assignments less mundane. As

long as you meet all the requirements of the assignment, the rest is yours to choose.

C. It’s okay to reward a long session of hard work with a quick break here or there. Eat something,

watch a TV show, play a bit of your favourite video game, pick up a musical instrument and practise a

little bit. Trying to work too long at too hard a pace with- out a break is only going to spoil your work in

the end, as you’ll start to tire, grow apathetic, and make mistakes. Taking semi-frequent breaks

proportional to the amount of time you spent working keeps your mind fresh and your spirits up.

D. Ultimately, you are going to have to make executive decisions about the importance of various

assignments relative to how much time and effort you’re expending on them. Don’t get bogged down

worrying about finishing a small assignment that is worth a negligible fraction of your grade if it means

that finishing it will cost you important points on a far more important project or paper for another class.

Always rank assignments based on their due date and importance. In the grand scheme of things, it’s

always best to do what will get you the best overall average of grade points.

E. If you have multiple assignments to do, don’t try and work on more than one at a time. Pick the most

immediately due assignment and stick with it like glue until it’s done. Then move on to the next most

pressing assignment. This way, you resist the temptation to bypass hard, looming assignments to jump to

easier but less pressing assignments for your sense of accomplishment. Concentrating your efforts on

one task is the key to any successful session of work.

F. Often, you’ll be tempted to pull all-nighters simply to get things done and out of your head. This is

extremely counterproductive. If you feel very tired, you can just drop off at any moment. If you sense

you’re giving less and less effort to your work, then stop. It’s always better to pick it up the next day

when you’re focused than to run a marathon all night and wind up with substandard work that you aren’t

proud of.

G. It’s not always easy to stay on the ball in college, but if you know how to stay calm, and make your

assignments work for you, you can simplify things tremendously. If you have no idea how to even start

an assignment, always feel free to contact your professor, campus tutoring office, or even your parents

for advice. Don’t let your fears get in the way of your doing well. If asking a professor for assistance is

the difference between a C and an A on an assignment, you should not care about your pride, you should

care about your college marks.

Задание 2.

The most difficult language.

People often ask which language is the most difficult to learn, and it is not easy to answer because

there are many factors to take into consideration. A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find

Portuguese much easier to learn than a native speaker of Chinese because Portuguese is very similar to

Spanish, while Chinese is very different. The greater the differences between the second language and

our first one, the harder it will be for most people to learn. Many people answer that Chinese is the

hardest language to learn possibly influenced by the thought of learning the Chinese writing system.

The pronunciation of Chinese appears to be very difficult for many foreign learners, too. However, for

Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning this language

will be less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet.

Some people seem to learn languages readily, while others find it very difficult. Teachers and the

circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner’s

motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they

often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day-to-day life.

British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest language is Japanese,

which will probably come as no surprise to many. But the language that they have found to be the most

problematic is Hungarian, which has 35 grammatical cases.

Different cultures and individuals from those cultures will find different languages more difficult. In

the case of Hungarian for British learners, it is not a question of the writing system, which uses a

similar alphabet, but the grammatical complexity, though native speakers of related languages may

find it easier.

When it comes to the issue of understand of life, some people suggest that the best way to learn about life is getting others» opinions, while other people maintain that the best way of learning is through person experience. In my point of view, the latter opinion carries more weight.

In the first place, learning from previous successful experiences is beneficial for people. For instance, a student who is preparing for an important exam can think of the past exams that he did very well, and he can review more effectively if he learns from these exam experiences. Moreover, the student can acquire the lesson from life that people who work effectively can be successful.

In the second place, learning from past failures can help people to understand the meaning of life. An example is that, losing money because of unwise investments is part of many businessmen»s experiences. When a businessman is planning to invest a big amount of money, he can look back at his experiences of the past and avoid pitfalls that may cause him to lose money again. As a result, he probably will seek advices from professional people and plan his investment more carefully this time. Learning from those failures can surely help people learn how to make wise decisions in life, and people can understand that avoiding mistakes is the keys to succeed in life.

In conclusion, although learning from one»s personal experience may have a few drawbacks, its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages. Both good and bad experiences can help people understand life better.

Задание №7507.
Чтение. ЕГЭ по английскому

Установите соответствие между заголовками 1 — 8 и текстами A — G. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

1. Education: the Way to the Top
2. From Agony to Love
3. Teaching to Learn
4. Learning That Never Stops
5. Things Worth Learning
6. The Right Word Can Bring Changes
7. What My Father Taught Me
8. The Power of Numbers

A. Education has the power to transform a person’s life. I am the living example of this. When I was on the streets, I thought I was not good at anything but I wrote a poem, and it got published. I went back to school to learn. I have learned the benefit of research and reading, of debate and listening. One day soon a group of fresh-faced college students will call me professor.

B. Language has the capacity to change the world and the way we live in it. People are often afraid to call things by their direct names, use taboos not to notice dangerous tendencies. Freedom begins with naming things. This has to happen in spite of political climates, careers being won or lost, and the fear of being criticized. After Helen Caldicott used the word ‘nuclear arms race’ an anti-nuclear movement appeared.

C. I never wanted to be a teacher. Yet years later, I find myself teaching high school English. I consider my job to be one of the most important aspects of my life, still I do not teach for the love of teaching. I am a teacher because I love to learn, and I have come to realize that the best way to learn is to teach.

D. One day my sister and I got one and the same homework. My sister finished the task in 2 minutes and went off to play. But I could not do it, so I went into my sister’s room and quickly copied her work. But there was one small problem: my father caught me. He didn’t punish me, but explained that cheating makes people feel helpless. And then I was left feeling guilty for cheating.

E. Lifelong learning does not mean spending all my time reading. It is equally important to get the habit of asking such questions as ‘what don’t I know about this topic, or subject?’, ‘what can I learn from this moment or person?’, and ‘what more do I need to learn?’ regardless of where I am, who I am talking to, or what I am doing.

F. Math has always been something that I am good at. Mathematics attracts me because of its stability. It has logic; it is dependable and never changes. There might be some additions to the area of mathematics, but once mathematics is created, it is set in stone. We would not be able to check emails or play videogames without the computer solving complex algorithms.

G. When my high school English teacher asked us to read Shakespeare, I thought it was boring and too difficult. I agonized over the syntax — I had never read anything like this. But now I am a Shakespeare professor, arid enjoy teaching Hamlet every semester. Each time I re-read the play, I find and learn something new for myself.

Learning a Language

B4

I’m going to start off by saying that the easiest way to learn a new language is by taking formal classes.
(степени сравнения)

EASY

B5

Last year I took a 40-minute English class once a week and it was definitely worth the money.
(past simple, т.к. действие происходило в прошлом не связанном с настоящим)

TAKE

B6

If you do not have the time or money to attend classes, you can of course teach yourself any language you want.
(present simple, т.к. это общее утверждение)

NOT HAVE

B7

If you have absolutely no prior knowledge of the language you are trying to learn, start by buying the same textbooks that schools use.
(present continuous, т.к. говорится о языке, который вы пытаетесь выучить сейчас)

TRY

B8

What makes using textbooks such a great tool for learning is that they are written in a context that makes it easy to understand.
(present simple passive, т.к. общее утверждение и они написаны, а не сами что-то пишут)

WRITE

B9

Besides, you can use the Internet, which is the greatest resource of knowledge that mankind has ever had.
(present perfect, т.к. знание, которое человечество имело до настоящего времени. Процесс не завершён)

HAVE

B10

But remember! You will not get any better without speaking and listening to the language. No matter what path you take in learning a new language, this is by far the most important step.
(future, вы не станете (говорить) лучше без …)
