The History of Parachutes
Scientists who study archeology say that there may be some evidence of prehistoric parachutes. But the first written history of the device comes from China about 2,100 years ago. Scientists cite an ancient book that describes parachutes. However, there is no archeological evidence that proves that an actual parachute was ever made. Later, people from northern Africa and Italy also had ideas about a similar invention. In fact, a Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawing corresponds closely with the modern parachute design!
In 1783, French scientist Sebastian Lenormand invented the first modern parachute. Sebastian brainstormed with other scientists to come up with a way to help people jump safely out of burning buildings. He thought the solution was to give people an object to restrict their speed while they traveled toward the ground. Many people thought that he was up to some kind of fraud, but Sebastian had a lot of integrity. His budget was limited, so he first tested his theory by using two umbrellas. He jumped out of a tree and found that the umbrellas worked.
Next, he refined his invention. Rather than using umbrellas, he knit a large parachute. Finally, he jumped off a tall building on a French estate and landed safely in the courtyard.
Sebastian’s work gave another man an idea. Jean-Pierre Blanchard had a different outlook than Sebastian. He was a hot air balloon addict. He was one of the first people to ride in a hot air balloon powered by hydrogen gas. He was a proponent of using the parachutes to exit from hot air balloons. Starting in 1785, he used his dog to show that animals could land safely from hot air balloons by using parachutes. Then, in 1793, he was faced with a chaotic experience. The hot air balloon he was riding in burst and started to fall. He was forced to use a parachute himself. And much to his relief, it saved his life!

Faust Vrancic — Homo Volans
Other early inventors designed parachutes, including Croatian Faust Vrancic who constructed a device based on Da Vinci’s drawing. Faust Vrancic jumped from a Venice tower in 1617 wearing a rigid-framed parachute. Faust Vrancic published Machinae Novae, in which he describes in text and picture fifty-six advanced technical constructions, including Vrancic’s parachute called the Homo Volans. -

A. Mary is a professional dress-maker specializing in exotic costumes. She devotes many hours to crafting mermaid tails and hand-made tops. Her professional mermaid costume includes a tail and a top. A tail is made of the finest silicone that bends naturally with movement and looks beautifully on film and in print. Out of the depths of the water her costume shines with hundreds ot pearls, crystals, and gemstones.
B. Today’s well-educated person uses about 18,000 words. Shakespeare, whose plays written for a small theatre are now performed in more countries than ever before, used over 34,000 different words, thousands of which he made up. For example: accessible, roadway, schoolboy, and watchdog. Many of his phrases have fallen into everyday use in our language today, including, “A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!’’ by Richard III.
C. The Celtic division of the year was into two parts. The winter half was considered the beginning of the year, and the summer half the second part. There were two further subdivisions. so the year was finally divided into the standard four seasons. At each of these four stages, a Fire Festival was celebrated. It involved religious ceremonies, music, storytelling, and poetry. These great festivals were regarded to be the best time.
D. As symbols of respect and courage, knights turned out to be an intriguing mix of all the things that made males the best, as their education included the most effective sorts of exercises for the brain and the human body. Knight tournaments were a good way for the knights to try out the actual travails of fighting and never having to go through the pain and troubles of having to look after themselves, and of their kingdoms.
E. Were there any women pirates in Renaissance England? They were in the minority, but they were never the less there and very able. Lady Mary was a daughter of a pirate and married to a pirate. When her husband died, she recruited her castle staff and went to sea herself. Her luck ran out when she captured a German captain, who was a friend of Queen Elizabeth. So Lady Mary quit piracy … and started selling stolen goods.
F. Russia is an amazing holiday destination. It should be visited during the festival season, as it reveals the rich cultural tradition and fascinating customs of its people. While the festivals come from the Christian legacy Russia shares with Europe and America, the manner of celebration is unique. Enthusiastic travelers suggest planning a Russian holiday during the festival time and to be sure that the memories will last a lifetime!
G. Normally very fine textiles are found in graves. Obviously, the quality of clothing worn in the Middle Ages would reduce with lower ranks, but even the slaves did not wear cloth as rough as people thought in the past and some still do today. Slaves would probably wear their master’s clothes, which may have been very thin in places and not decorated. They would usually receive the underclothes to be worn as overclothes.

When he reached an altitude of 2,230 feet, he cut the basket loose and fell toward the earth under an umbrella-like parachute. No one knew if a parachute would work from that height, but it did, and Garnerin went on to give many more parachute-jumping exhibitions. |

Parachutes

DaVinci Parachute drawing
Credit for the invention of the first
practical parachute frequently goes to Sebastien Lenormand who demonstrated
the parachute principle in 1783. However, parachutes had been imagined
and sketched by Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)
centuries earlier and other inventors have designed parachutes, including
Croatian Faust Vrancic who constructed a device based on Da Vinci’s
drawing and jumped from a Venice tower in 1617.
Faust Vrancic published Machinae Novae, in which he describes
in text and picture fifty-six advanced technical constructions, including
Vrancic’s parachute called the Homo Volans.
Jean Pierre Blanchard (1753-1809)
a Frenchman was probably the first person to actually use a parachute for
an emergency. In 1785, he dropped a dog in a basket, to which a parachute
was attached, from a balloon high in the air. In 1793, Blanchard claims
to have escaped from an exploded hot air balloon with a parachute. Blanchard,
it should be noted, also developed the first foldable parachute made from
silk, up until that point all parachutes were made from rigid frames.
In 1797 (October 22), Andrew Garnerin was the
first person recorded to jump with a parachute without a rigid frame. Garnerin
jumped from hot air ballons as high as 8,000 feet in the air. Garnerin
also designed the first air vent in a parachute intended to reduce oscillations.
In 1837, Robert Cocking became the
first person to die from a parachute accident.
In 1887, Captain Thomas Baldwin invented
the first parachute harness and in 1890, Paul Letteman and Kathchen Paulus
invented the method of folding or packing the parachute in a knapsak to
be worn on the back before its release. Kathchen Paulus was also behind
the invention of the intentional breakaway, which is when one small parachute
opens first and pulls open the main parachute.
Two parachuters claim to be the first
man to jump from an airplane, both Grant Morton and Captain Albert Berry
parachuted from an airplane in 1911. In 1914, Georgia «Tiny» Broadwick
made the first freefall jump.

Parachute Training Tower — Switlik Parachute
Company
Polish-American Stanley Switlik founded the «Canvas-Leather
Speciality Company» on October 9, 1920. The company first manufactured
items such as leather hampers, golf bags, coal bags, pork roll casings, and
postal mail bags. However, Switlik soon switched to making pilot and gunner
belts, designing flight clothing, and experimenting with parachutes. The company
was soon renamed the Switlik Parachute & Equipment Company. According to
Switlik’s Website:
In 1934, Stanley Switlik and George Palmer
Putnam, Amelia Earhart’s husband, formed a joint venture and built a 115 foot
tall tower on Stanley’s farm in Ocean County. Designed to train airmen in
parachute jumping, the first public jump from the tower was made by Ms.
Earhart on June 2, 1935. Witnessed by a crowd of reporters and officials from
the Army and Navy, she described the descent as «Loads of Fun!»
History
of Paratroopers
The idea of parachutes for military
personnel was first suggested by the late Col. William (Billy) Mitchell,
this was sometime during W.W.I even before they had chutes for American
flyers.
The
Development of the ParaPlane
Aeronautical Engineer, Steve Snyder,
with the help of Adrian Vandenberg, completed the basic frame design of
the paraplane in March of 1981.
