Speaker A. The Calgary Stampede is held for 10 days in July. We call it ‘The largest outdoor show on Earth’. Over one million visitors attend it every year! There’s a rodeo, wagon racing, agricultural exhibitions and concerts. Come and see for yourself. And apart from having a great time, you will also support our social and educational programmes, as a percentage of all the money we spend at the Stampede — from parking and admission to food and drinks — goes there.

Speaker B. The Notting Hill carnival in London is a Caribbean festival. I went to see it with my mum when I was five. The only thing I remember though is that it was terribly crowded. No wonder. After all, it’s one of the biggest street festivals in the world. Stupidly, I wandered off but, due to the deafening music, I couldn’t hear Mum calling my name. I was carried away by the moving crowd and got lost. I was so terrified that I didn’t go back to the festival for years after that!

Speaker C. My first Glastonbury was in 1984. It was the coolest music festival of all, and cheap at only 13 pounds. Over the years, I saw all my favourite bands there live. Great bands they were, too. Quality music. Now the tickets are over 200 pounds and some of the performers are … well, let’s just say they’re not my cup of tea. And the people who go there … so-called celebrities who want to be seen at some-thing ‘cool’. I stopped going years ago.

Speaker D. Several years ago I was in St Petersburg during the White Nights Festival. There was so much to see and do! Romantic strolls by the banks of the river and canals on warm summer nights, the streets full of happy faces. And such a wealth of events! Magnificent classical ballet and opera performances by the greatest artists, as well as a concert by the Rolling Stones! And, unbelievably, I watched a pretend naval battle with pirates in boats on the river Neva!

Speaker E. There’s nothing like Up Helly Aa, I tell you, a fire festival in Scotland! There’s a torch lit procession to show the Sun’s return after the winter solstice. The torch bearers are all dressed as fierce Viking warriors with helmets, shields and axes. They make their way to the shore and there they set fire to a Viking boat. Why? I think it represents the burial ceremony of the great chieftains and their final jour-ney to Valhalla.

Speaker F. You must visit New York in March during the St Patrick’s Day Parade. I’m so glad I did. Wow! What a party! It’s a huge Irish festival, and bigger than anything in Ire-land. People wear green ‒ the traditional colour of Ireland ‒ even if they aren’t Irish, and watch the parade on the street or on television. I bought a green hat and joined in! For lunch, I had a green bagel and a green coke!

The Significance of the Chinese Lantern Festival

Chinese New year, also called Spring Festival in China, marks the beginning of the Spring season. The Chinese Lantern Festival marks the final day of these celebrations. After the Lantern Festival, Chinese New Year taboos are no longer in effect, and all New Year decorations are taken down. Some people still wait till after the festival to return to work or study.

The lanterns symbolize people letting go of the past year and welcoming the new year with good fortune.

The Origins and Stories of Chinese Lantern Festival

Chinese Lantern Festival can be traced back to 2,000 years ago. There are many origin stories about it. Here are two of the most popular ones:

Origin Story 1: A Buddhist Celebration

Ruling the beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), Emperor Hanmingdi was an advocate of Buddhism. He heard that some monks lit lanterns in their temples to show respect to Buddha on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.

Therefore, he ordered that all the temples, households, and royal palaces should light lanterns on that evening. This Buddhist custom gradually became a grand festival among the people of China.

Origin Story 2: A Trick Played on the Jade Emperor

A legend has it that the Jade Emperor’s favorite crane was killed by some villagers. So, he decided to destroy the village with fire on the fifteenth day of the lunar year. The Jade Emperor’s daughter felt very sad about this and warned the villagers about what was going to happen.

Then, a wise man advised the villagers to hang red lanterns to give the Jade Emperor the impression that the village was already on fire. The emperor was fooled and the village survived. This tradition of hanging red lanterns on the fifteenth day of the lunar year has continued until the present time.

How Do Chinese Celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival?

The most popular traditions to celebrate Yuanxiao Festival are enjoying lanterns, guessing lantern riddles, eating tangyuan, and lion/dragon dances.

1. Lighting and Watching Lanterns

chinese lantern festival, yuanxiao festival

Lighting and appreciating lanterns is the main activity of Yuan Xiao Jie. Lanterns are seen everywhere including in houses, shopping malls, parks, and streets. The (traditional) lanterns are almost always red to invoke good fortune.

Lighting lanterns symbolize «illuminating the future». It is a way for people to pray that they will have smooth futures and to express their best wishes for their families. In the Taiwanese Mandarin dialect, the Chinese word for lantern (灯 dēng) is pronounced similarly to (丁 dīng), which means ‘to have a new-born baby’, so in Taiwan putting up lanterns could even express a wish for couples to have a baby!

During the Lantern Festival, many big lantern fairs are held in China, such as Qinhuai International Lantern Festival in Nanjing and Shanghai Yuyuan Lantern Festival. The lanterns’ artwork vividly illustrates traditional Chinese imagery and symbols, such as fruits, flowers, birds, animals, people, and buildings.

2. Guessing Lantern Riddles

Guessing (solving) lantern riddles started in the Song Dynasty (960–1279), and it is one of the most important and popular activities of the Lantern Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on paper notes and paste them on the colorful lanterns. People crowd round to guess the riddles.

If someone thinks they have the right answer, they can pull the riddle off and go to the lantern owner to check their answer. If the answer is right, there is usually a small gift as a prize.

3. Eating Tangyuan (Yuanxiao)

chinese lantern festival, yuanxiao festival

Eating tangyuan is an important custom of the Lantern Festival. Tangyuan (汤圆 tāngyuán /tung-ywen/ ‘soup round’), also called yuanxiao in the north, are balls of glutinous rice boiled in a sweet soup.

As tangyuan is pronounced similarly to tuanyuan (团圆 /twan-ywen/ ‘group round’), which means ‘reunion’ and ‘completeness’, Chinese people believe that the round shape of the balls and bowls symbolize wholeness and togetherness. The popular lucky saying when eating tangyuan is 团团圆圆 (/Tuántuán yuányuán/ ‘group-group round-round’): ‘Happy (family) reunion!’

4. Watching Dragon Dances and Lion Dances

As two of the most outstanding traditional folk dances in China, dragon and lion dances are common during the Lantern Festival. Chinese people (traditionally) regard the lion as a symbol of bravery and strength and believe that it’s appearance can drive away evil and protect people and their livestock. Chinese people worship the dragon and regard it as a symbol of good luck.

Chinese Lantern Festival Food

The most traditional food eaten at Chinese Lantern Festival is tangyuan (汤圆 tāngyuán /tung-ywen/ ‘soup round’), also called yuanxiao in northern China. They are ball-shaped dumplings, made of glutinous rice flour and stuffed with different fillings, such as brown sugar, sesame seeds, peanuts, walnuts, bean paste, and jujube paste or a combination of ingredients. They are usually sweet.

chinese lantern festival, yuanxiaojie festival

It is a must-eat food at the Chinese Lantern Festival due to its auspicious meaning in every aspect — from its round shape to its sweet taste and fine-sounding pronunciation.

  • Its round shape symbolizes wholeness and completeness.
  • Its sweet taste symbolizes a sweet and happy life.
  • Tangyuan sounds similar to tuanyuan (团圆), which means ‘reunion’. It, therefore, symbolizes family reunion, harmony, and happiness.

Yuanxiao can be boiled, fried, or steamed, and are customarily served in fermented rice soup, called tianjiu (甜酒 tiánjiǔ /tyen-jyoh/ ‘sweet liquor’).

It is believed that the custom of eating tangyuan originated during the Song Dynasty era, and became popular during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynastic periods.

Is Yuanxiao Jie the Real Chinese Valentine’s Day?

China’s Lantern Festival is one of the romantic traditional Chinese festivals. In ancient times, unmarried women were not allowed to go out of the house. The Chinese Lantern Festival provided an opportunity for them to stroll freely, lighting lanterns, playing games, and interacting with men. This is why some say that the Chinese Lantern Festival is the true Chinese «Valentine’s Day», rather than Qixi Festival (七夕 ‘Double Seventh’).

Chinese Lantern Festival 2022 Events Around the World

Chinese Lantern Festival has become increasingly popular in Western countries in recent years. Many large lantern displays are held, such as:

  1. Nostalgia

The term nostalgia describes a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. The word is a learned formation of a Greek compound, consisting of νόστος, meaning «homecoming», a Homeric word, and ἄλγος, meaning «pain, ache», and was coined by a 17th-century medical student to describe the anxieties displayed by Swiss mercenaries fighting away from home. Described as a medical condition—a form of melancholy—in the Early Modern period, it became an important trope in Romanticism.
In common, less clinical usage, nostalgia can refer to a general interest in the past, their personalities, and events, especially the «good old days» from one’s earlier life. Boym argues that nostalgia is more prevalent during times of great upheaval.
The scientific literature on nostalgia is quite thin, but a few studies have attempted to pin down the its essence and causes. Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through the amygdala, the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of our past are usually important events, people we care about, and places where we have spent time. Music and weather can also be a strong trigger of nostalgia.

Nostalgia can lead to strong yearnings for discovering new lands, exploring newer oceans, and offering your unlimited creativity in most unfamiliar spaces — everything that is beyond your normal limitations, and outside your comfort zone.

Nostalgia is a predominately positive emotion that people easily perceive in their lives, for instance, people can feel happy and peaceful when browsing their pictures grouped with family or friends.

The Calgary Stampede is held for 10 days in July. We call it ‘The largest outdoor show on Earth’. Over one million visitors attend it every year! There’s a rodeo, wagon racing, agricultural exhibitions and concerts. Come and see for yourself. And apart from having a great time, you will also support our social and educational programmes, as a percentage of all the money we spend at the Stampede – from parking and admission to food and drinks – goes there.

My first Glastonbury’ was in 1984. It was the coolest music festival of all, and cheap at only 13 pounds. Over the years, I saw all my favourite bands there live. Great bands they were, too. Quality music. Now the tickets are over 200 pounds and some of the performers are … well, let’s just say they’re not my cup of tea. And the people who go there … so-called celebrities who want to be seen at something ‘cool’. I stopped going years ago.

Speaker D
Several years ago I was in St Petersburg during the White Nights Festival. There was so much to see and do! Romantic strolls by the banks of the river and canals on warm summer nights, the streets full of happy faces. And such a wealth of events! Magnificent classical ballet and opera performances by the greatest artists, as well as a concert by the Rolling Stones! And, unbelievably, I watched a pretend naval battle with pirates in boats on the river Neva!

Speaker E
There’s nothing like Up Helly Aa, I tell you, a fire festival in Scotland! There’s a torch lit procession to show the Sun’s return after the winter solstice. The torch bearers are all dressed as fierce Viking warriors with helmets, shields and axes. They make their way to the shore and there they set fire to a Viking boat. Why? I think it represents the burial ceremony of the great chieftains and their final journey to Valhalla.

Speaker F
You must visit New York in March during the St Patrick’s Day Parade. I’m so glad I did. Wow! What a party! It’s a huge Irish festival, and bigger than anything in Ireland. People wear green – the traditional colour of Ireland – even if they aren’t Irish, and watch the parade on the street or on television. I bought a green hat and joined in! For lunch, I had a green bagel and a green coke!

A. The pilgrim story begins in England in the 16th century. A congregation of religious dissidents in Nottinghamshire believed the Church of England did not act in accordance with the teachings of the Bible so they established a church of their own in 1606. At that time the church and state were one, so being a separatist was considered an act of treason. The congregation had no choice but to leave their motherland. They fled to the city of Leiden in Holland where they could worship as they liked. Unfortunately life was hard there, so they decided to emigrate to the English colonies in North America, then known as ‘Virginia’.

B. The voyage and settlement were financed by a group of English investors known as the ‘merchant adventurers’. They formed a partnership with the colonists whereby the merchants agreed to risk their money, and the settlers to invest their labour, for seven years. Land and livestock were jointly owned and the company would dissolve and divide its assets after the seven years..

C. On September 6, 1620, aboard a ship called the Mayflower, 102 passengers set sail across the Atlantic. The crossing was smooth at first but then came many storms, which damaged the ship. Two people died on board and one baby, named Oceanus, was born. Eventually, after 66 days of travelling, the emigrants arrived in Cape Cod in south-eastern Massachusetts. The pilgrims chose to stay here as it was too late to go to the northern part of Virginia..

D. The pilgrims went ashore to explore the wilderness. Exploration began with a small group of 16 men. They discovered a buried cache of corn and a kettle, signs that the native Americans had a camp there. They also found a native American burial ground and unoccupied homes. After a cold night camping, the pilgrims came face to face with the native Americans at dawn. So, they decided to settle down somewhere else..

E. Later on, in December, the pilgrims discovered a sheltered bay, called Plymouth Harbour, a place which was protected and good for them to live permanently. Their first winter was much colder than the English winters they had experienced before. The pilgrims began building houses, but the weather conditions were terrible, meaning that the building took longer to complete. Some of the thatched houses caught fire as a result of pilgrims cooking and trying to keep warm. The pilgrims sheltered from the snowstorms in the Mayflower ship. About half the group died from the bitter cold and from malnutrition, although happily, a baby, Peregrine, was also born. The pilgrims persevered and finally finished their village in February.

F. The native Americans met the pilgrims on March 16th. A native American, Samoset, from present-day Maine, welcomed the pilgrims in English. Samoset had learnt English from fishermen. He explained how previous explorers had kidnapped some native Americans, and said he hoped they would be able to live peacefully together. Massasoit, the regional leader of the Wampanoag also visited the pilgrims and they exchanged gifts. They signed a peace treaty, which would last for over 50 years.

G. The first Thanksgiving festival was held in the autumn of 1621, and Massasoit was invited. Together, they celebrated the harvest and the success of their peace with feasting and dancing. This festival is now a public holiday in the USA.

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936, in Oran, Algeria. He grew up in a villa by the Mediterranean with his two younger sisters, Michelle and Brigitte. While his family was relatively well off—his father was a lawyer and insurance broker who owned a chain of cinemas—childhood for the future fashion icon was not easy. Saint Laurent was not popular in school, and was often bullied by schoolmates. As a consequence, Saint Laurent was a nervous child, and sick nearly every day.

He found solace, however, in the world of fashion. He liked to create intricate paper dolls, and by his early teen years he was designing dresses for his mother and sisters. At the age of 17, a whole new world opened up to Saint Laurent when his mother took him to Paris for a meeting she had arranged with Michael de Brunhoff, the editor of French Vogue.

A year later, Saint Laurent, who had impressed de Brunhoff with his drawings, moved to Paris and enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, where his designs gained notice very quickly. De Brunhoff also introduced Saint Laurent to designer Christian Dior, a giant in the fashion world. «Dior fascinated me,» Saint Laurent later recalled. «I couldn’t speak in front of him. He taught me the basis of my art. Whatever was to happen next, I never forgot the years I spent at his side.» Under Dior’s tutelage, Saint Laurent’s style continued to mature and gain still more notice.

In 1960 Saint Laurent was called back to his home country of Algeria to fight for its independence. He managed to secure an exemption based on health grounds, but when he returned to Paris, Saint Laurent found that his job with Dior had disappeared. The news, at first, was traumatic for the young, fragile designer. Then it became ugly, with Saint Laurent successfully suing his former mentor for breach of contract, and collecting £48,000.

Over the next two decades, Saint Laurent’s designs sat atop the fashion world. Models and actresses gushed over his creations. He outfitted women in blazers and smoking jackets, and introduced attire like the pea coat to the runway. His signature pieces also included the sheer blouse and the jumpsuit.

By the 1980s, Yves Saint Laurent was a true icon. He became the first designer to have a retrospective on his work at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The fashion house flourished as a money-making venture.

Yves Saint Laurent didn’t have a happy childhood because

  1. he lived far from the city
  2. his family was very poor
  3. he didn’t get along with his classmates
  4. his father was too busy at work

After Yves Saint Laurent returned from Algeria, Christian Dior

  1. made him pay £48,000
  2. continued working with him
  3. broke his dream of becoming a well-known designer
  4. was made to pay a huge sum because of firing Yves
