TEST 03(part 1) |
A. UNUSUAL VIEWS 3
B. EARLY INVENTORS 6
C. SENSIBLE DECISIONS 4
D. POPULAR ARTISTS
E. COMMON MISTAKES 5
F. FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS 2
G. SCIENTIFIC VALUE 1
1. Photography has many uses. Most of us use photographs to save special moments for the future, but scientists can also learn a lot from them. In the nineteenth century, for example, people argued about whether all four of a horse’s legs left the ground at the same time when it ran. A man call Eadweard Muybridge took high-speed photographs of a horse and proved that all four legs were indeed off the ground at the same moment.
SCIENTIFIC VALUE
2. The ordinary camera that uses film seems to be a thing of the past. These days, more and more people are using digital cameras to capture those unforgettable moments. In ten years’ time, we’ll all be taking pictures that we then put on our computers to print out or to send around the world by e-mail. The cameras will get better and cheaper, and the world of photography will never be the same again!
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
3. Is your album full of boring snapshots? Taking good photographs is a lot easier than you might think. The secret is to find new ways of looking at an ordinary scene. If you’re taking a picture of a building, what happens if you look up? Or perhaps the back of the building is more interesting than the front. Photography is about surprises and discovering new points of view.
UNUSUAL VIEWS
4. Before buying a camera, it’s important to decide what you’re going to use it for. Do you want to take quick photos of your friends and family? In that case, you should go for a cheap camera that you can keep in your bag or pocket, always ready. Do you want to take artistic pictures? If so, you will probably want to spend a bit more on a more expensive professional camera. A little thought now can help you choose wisely.
SENSIBLE DECISIONS
5. Many people hope to simply pick up a camera, point it and produce great pictures. Photography is a lot easier than it used to be, but it’s still easy to get it wrong. Remember that you should have the sun behind you. Too many people take photographs facing the sun and then are surprised when there’s too much light! Another thing to avoid is taking pictures of something far away in the dark. Your flash won’t help at a distance.
COMMON MISTAKES
6. When the Englishman William Henry Fox Talbot first pointed his camera at a window in his home, Lacock Abbey, in 1835, he helped to start a revolution. This was the moment he created the first photograph on paper. His ideas, together with those of other pioneers, including the Frenchmen Daguerre and Niepce, changed things forever. Today’s world of full-colour images had its beginnings in their experiments.
EARLY INVENTORS

The Archipelago
In the remote southern seas there is a cluster of islands. Each island is inhabited by a different race of people. Although physically they look alike, you can tell them 30 … by their styles of dress and their distinctive dialects. Each island has its own unique form of architecture. The only similarity between them is that each race builds in a manner that is 31 … odds with the environment. On rocky hillsides there are wooden huts and in wooded valleys you can see towns of brick. Arid uplands are irrigated and planted with leafy gardens, whereas, on fertile plains, the parks are paved with stone. 32 … their differences, the islanders coexist peacefully. There is rivalry over certain fishing waters but it rarely 33 … to more than a few heated exchanges.
At the centre of the archipelago, perhaps in the most favoured spot of all, lies an island that has been deserted for many generations. It looks very different from the rest: darker, taller, silent. There is no obvious reason 34 … its abandonment as it has good soil and plenty of freshwater.
Long ago, it was inhabited by farmers and fishermen much like everywhere else in the archipelago, but everything changed when they started building the first wall. As soon as it was finished a second circle of battlements began to rise from the centre, slightly narrower than the one before, so that from faraway the island 35 … an enormous wedding cake.
Nobody can explain why the wall was started but there are many theories as to why it was never finished. Some say that so many had perished during its construction, that no one dared halt the work and thereby admit that it had all been in vain. Others claim that the builders simply 36 … out of materials. But one thing is certain, the predicted threat never arrived and the people at the centre of the archipelago had, quite simply, bricked themselves in.

A. «When men first flew in space, they were amazed to discover that the only men-made object visible from orbit was the Great Wall of China.» This is a nice idea, but it’s not true. The Great Wall is mostly grey stone in a grey landscape and, in fact, is very difficult to see even from an aeroplane flying at a mere 15 kilometres above. What can be seen when orbiting the earth are the fires of African desert people and the lights of fishing boats off Japan.
В. The term «Mayday’ is an internationally recognized radio signal which is only used when a ship is in great danger and needs help immediately. The signal is transmitted on a wavelength of 2.182 kHz, which is permanently monitored by rescue services on the shore. The use of this expression has a very straightforward explanation. It came from the French phrase «m’aidez’, which means «help me’.
С. In 1700, Henri Misson, a Frenchman visiting Britain, asked villagers why they had horseshoes nailed above their doors. They said it was to keep witches away. Horseshoes are made of iron and the strength of the iron was thought to protect from evil. Still today they are thought to bring good luck and many brides carry silver ones at their weddings. The position of the horseshoe is very important. It must point upwards like a cup so that the luck cannot fall out.
D. Women generally live about six years longer than men. Evidence suggests that boys are the weaker sex at birth, which means that more die in infancy. Also, women do not have as much heart disease as men. In terms of lifestyle, men smoke more than women and thus more die of smoking-related diseases. Also, they generally have more dangerous occupations, such as building work.
E. Scientists say that rats can help look for earthquake survivors buried in the ruined buildings. Dogs are already used to search for people, but rats can be even more useful. Like dogs they’ve got a great sense of smell, but scientists still need to train rats to sniff out people and to carry special radio transmitters to let them know when the survivor is found. Rats may also be trained to find bombs or explosives.
F. Dinosaurs roared for about 150 million years before they disappeared. We humans have only been around for about 2 million years. But cockroaches are 350 million years old and still going strong! Cockroaches can survive in extreme conditions. They can be frozen, then thawed, and walk away as if nothing had happened. They can go for incredibly long time without eating anything. And that is the secret of their success!
G. Founded in 1980, BASE jumping grew out of skydiving. But BASE jumping is much more dangerous than skydiving that is why it is banned in many countries. Legal jumps now happen on specific days and from approved structures. However, like other extreme sports, it’s the risk of disaster that makes BASE jumping so exciting.

Clothing
Clothing is a distinctly human artefact. Even more than the use of tools, it distinguishes humans from the other creatures on this planet. The basic purpose of clothing was originally practical. By putting on a skin, humans were able to move into regions ___ (A). An example of this use of clothing can be seen among the Eskimos, and other people who live with extreme cold. However, clothing was not only used for protection, but has also been a means of displaying one’s status. Thus, clothing also developed in countries ___ (B).
Clothing tells us many things about the wearer. It can be used to indicate ___ (C). The most extreme example of this type of clothing is a uniform.
A dress code is very important in business. It is a rare businessman ___ (D).
Most politicians also try to be neat and well-dressed.
The significance of what we wear is becoming more important ___ (E). There have been cases on holiday islands where the locals have been outraged by foreign visitors – especially female visitors – who wear far less than the minimum that the locals consider decent. Actually, the signals given by clothing as worn by men and women have decreased ___ (F). For example, today most women are very comfortable wearing jeans. Yet the sight of a man in a dress would raise eyebrows in most western cultures.
Clothing is very important in our society. So it is highly unlikely that there will be no use for clothing in the future, unless humanity evolves into a completely new species.

The Open Window
«My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel,» said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; «in the meantime you must try and put up with me.»
Framton Nuttel endeavoured to say the correct something which should duly flatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing.
«I know how it will be,» his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; «you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice.»
Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction came into the nice division.
«Do you know many of the people round here?» asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.
«Hardly a soul,» said Framton. «My sister was staying here, at the rectory, you know, some four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here.»
He made the last statement in a tone of distinct regret.
«Then you know practically nothing about my aunt?» pursued the self-possessed young lady.
«Only her name and address,» admitted the caller. He was wondering whether Mrs. Sappleton was in the married or widowed state. An indefinable something about the room seemed to suggest masculine habitation.
«Her great tragedy happened just three years ago; that would be since your sister’s time. You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon,» said the niece, indicating a large French window that opened on to a lawn.
«It is quite warm for the time of the year,» said Framton; «but has that window got anything to do with the tragedy?»
«Out through that window, three years ago to a day, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting. They never came back. In crossing the moor to their favourite snipe-shooting ground they were all three engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog. It had been that dreadful wet summer, you know, and places that were safe in other years gave way suddenly without warning. Their bodies were never recovered. That was the dreadful part of it.»
Here the child’s voice lost its self-possessed note and became falteringly human. «Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday, they and the little brown spaniel that was lost with them, and walk in at that window just as they used to do. That is why the window is kept open every evening till it is quite dusk. Poor dear aunt, she has often told me how they went out, her husband with his white waterproof coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing «Bertie, why do you bound?» as he always did to tease her, because she said it got on her nerves. Do you know, sometimes on still, quiet evenings like this, I almost get a creepy feeling that they will all walk in through that window’

Do you
believe in climate change?
This may
seem like an odd question for a climate scientist to ask, but it is one I am
constantly asked
now. The typical discussion starts: «I know that the
climate is changing, but hasn’t it always changed
through natural cycles?»
Then they will often give an example, such as the medieval warm period
to prove
their point.
Those
asking the question include a wide range of people I meet in the pub, friends,
politicians and,
increasingly, even some of those active in sustainable
development and the renewable energy
businesses. What I find interesting is
that I have known many of these people for a long time and
they never asked me
this before.
Recent
studies show that public acceptance of the scientific evidence for man-made
climate change
has decreased. However, the change is not that great. The
difference I find in talking to people is
that they feel better able to express
their doubts.
This is
very hard for scientists to understand. The scientific evidence that humanity
is having an
effect on the climate is overwhelming and increasing every year.
Yet public perception of this is
confused. People modify their beliefs about
uncomfortable truth, they may have become bored of
constantly hearing about
climate change; or external factors such as the financial crisis may have
played a role.
Around
three years ago, I raised the issue of the way that science can be misused. In
some cases
scare stories in the media were over-hyping climate change, and I
think we are paying the price
for this now with a reaction the other way. I was
concerned then that science is not always
presented objectively by the media.
What I don’t think any of us appreciated at the time was the
depth of
disconnect between the scientific process and the public.
Which
brings me to the question, should you believe in climate change? The first
point to make is
that it’s not something you should believe or not believe in –
this is a matter of science and
therefore of evidence – and there’s a lot of it
out there. On an issue this important, I think people
should look at that
evidence and make their own mind up. We are often very influenced by our
own
personal experience. After a couple of cold winters in the UK, the common
question was:
«Has climate change stopped?» despite that fact that many
other regions of the world were
experiencing record warm temperatures. And 2010
was one of the warmest years on record. For
real evidence of climate change, we
have to look at the bigger picture.
You can see
research by the Met Office that shows the evidence of man-made warming is even
stronger than it was when the last report was published. A whole range of
different datasets
and independent analyses show the world is warming. There is
a broad consensus that over the
last half-century, warming has been rapid, and
man-made greenhouse gas emissions are very likely
to be the cause.
Ultimately,
as the planet continues to warm, the issue of whether you believe in climate
change will
become more and more irrelevant. We will all experience the impacts
of climate change in some
way, so the evidence will be there in plain sight.
The more
appropriate questions for today are how will our climate change and how can we
prepare
for those changes? That’s why it’s important that climate scientists
continue their work, and
continue sharing their evidence and research so people
can stay up to date – and make up their
own minds.

3) there is evidence that the climate change
has stopped finally.
4)people draw conclusions based on their own
experience rather than scientific evidence.
6. How does
the author feel about the evidence of climate change?
1) It’s not enough yet.
2)It’s not very convincing.
3)It soon would become conclusive.
4) It’s irrelevant so far.
7. The
author wants climate scientists to continue their work because …
1) they have not shared their findings with
the public.
2) people need to know how to get ready for
changes.
3)society demands more research in this field.
4)people don’t want to make up their own
minds.

Human evolution is a lengthy process of change by which people originated from their apelike
ancestors. The traits that we today recognize as human evolved over a period of approximately
six million years. One of the earliest human traits was the ability to walk on two legs. This ability
evolved some four million years ago. A large and complex brain, the ability to use tools and the
capacity for language have developed more recently. Some studies lead us to believe that humans
have some relationship to another group of primate species, the apes. Scientists say that humans
and the great apes of Africa — chimpanzees and gorillas — share a common ancestor who lived
between 8 and 6 million years ago. However, researchers do not all agree about how these
species are related to the modern human. Genetic research into this relationship has produced
some controversial results and more discoveries, perhaps sensational ones, are to be expected.

Islands that appear and disappear are certainly part of the world’s legends. But in 1963, with the aid of cameras and scientific observers, some of those legends were given a solid basis of fact. For example, on November 13, 1963, a kind of miracle occured. An island was born.
On that day a fishing boat sailed into waters that were boiling and rolling and foul with a strong smell. The world still had a hard time believing the miracle that was to occur. It was the first time that scientists were to witness the unexpected birth of an underwater island.
First the engineer, then the captain, and at last the cook were aware of awful smell and the peculiar roll of the sea. But it was the cook who first noticed the smoke. He thought there was a ship in trouble somewhere on the seas.

высказывание;
защиту;
его защиту;
противоположным мнением;
краткие формы: can’t, didn’t, isn’t, I’m;
предлоги, артикли, частицы;
числительные, выраженные цифрами: 25, 2006, 1000000;
числительные с процентами 25%;
сложные слова: well‑being, good‑looking, twenty‑five;
UN, e‑mail.
One should read about historical sites before
early choice of a career path is the key to success — Ранний выбор карьеры —
Например, к высказыванию “Friendship is the greatest gift of life” писали выступление, которое полностью дублирует фразу: “Some people believe that friendship is the greatest
gift of life. Others don’t think so”.
Science is the first thing to be financed in the
modern world” писали такое вступление: “Modern science helps human progress, that is why it
should be financed before other spheres”.
Nowadays people are getting more and more concerned
about…
It is generally
accepted that…
A common opinion
is that…
There are two
points of view on…
Some people are
convinced that…and others believe that…
Who is
right? Which is true?
I think that it is better to read some historical
information before visiting historic places” шли такие аргументы: “Firstly, you can find a lot of information in the
Internet. Secondly, it may help you in your future life”.
My personal view
is that…
In my opinion/judgment/view… —
I completely agree/disagree with this statement… — Я
I don’t support the idea of…
Firstly/ first and
foremost/ first of all…
Another (positive/
negative) aspect of …
Finally/ Lastly
However… — Хотя…;
On the other hand
There is another
side to the question of…
«One should read historical sites before sightseeing”
I think that it is better to
visit historical places than to read information» с контраргументом
«The guide will tell you everything during the excursion». В
The guide will tell you everything during the
excursion». Например, подойдёт ответ: «If you read about sights in advance you will
save money because excursion may be expensive».
I strongly disagee
with…
I am afraid I
cannot agree with the opinion that…
Despite my respect
for the opinion that…, I cannot share it because…
One should read about historical sites before
sightseeing” следующими словами: “To sum up, I would like to say that sightseeing is
wonderful. And we should cherish the memories about those nice places we have visited”.
In conclusion, I want to say,
that it is a debatable issue. Everybody
must decide themselves if they need to find some historical information before
sightseeing”.
On this basis, I can conclude that…
In conclusion, I would like to stress that…
All in all, I
believe that…
To sum up…
in addition — к тому же,
therefore — следовательно,
To my mind, personally, I think that it is better
to visit historical places at first. To begin with, firstly, it will be a
surprise and you will better remember it”.
риторические вопросы;
разговорные конструкции типа let’s;
I’m, he’s, don’t, didn’t, haven’t.
needn’t.

Now we are ready to start.
Tom: Hi, Kate. Kate, earth to Kate! You’re obviously so deep in thoughts. Are you lost in your dreams? What are you thinking about?
Kate: Oh, hi Tom! Sorry, I didn’t see you. Actually I was thinking about a present for my friend’s birthday.
Tom: This shouldn’t be much of the problem for you. You are always so creative for the presents.
Kate: Thanks for the compliment, but the point is, I don’t know this person very well, so choosing a present for her is tricky.
Tom: How can it be that this is your friend and you don’t know this person very well? How can be possible?
Kate: I know it sounds strange, but this is my pen friend actually.
Tom: That explains it. How did you find her?
Kate: Well, she is from Peru and we have just started communicating. I found her profile on facebook. I got a message saying that she has her birthday in two weeks; I thought it’d be nice to give her something on such a special occasion.
Tom: Ok, I see. What about giving her CD? This shouldn’t be so hard to ship to Peru, and music is universal, you know.
Kate: A great idea! But I don’t know what she has or hasn’t in her music collection, do i?
Tom: Oh, that’s pretty easy. You can give her a disc of our local music, she can’t have that. That’s for sure.
Kate: Super! You’re a star!
Tom: Just keep in mind what styles she generally prefers. Do you have any information on that?
Kate: I saw it in her profile. If I remember correctly, she likes calm, romantic music. Does that mean that she is a quite person?
Tom: Not necessarily. She might be just the opposite. Very talkative and easygoing.
Kate: You know, I believe, persons character is reflected in what music he or she likes.
Tom: I think so too. But the connections can be very unexpected and inexplicable for my mind.
Kate: All right. Now I need to go to a music shop and choose something.
Tom: Shall I help you? I’m absolutely free and I know all the local music really well. I can help you choose.
Kate: Really? That would be great! You could also help me choose something for myself, I think my collection needs new items.
Tom: Good idea. Let’s go then.
