Tips for boosting motivation
To excel in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really care about the work that must ( DO ).
The ultimate key to success in school is ( STAY ) focused on your course work.
Naturally enough, the vast majority of students find it tempting to do the ( SIMPLE ) assignments first.
However, those tasks that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you ( LEARN ) the most from by the exam time.
Changing your approach can help you stay interested. If you ( GIVE ) an assignment similar to one you’ve done previously, think about it in a different way.
If you ( WRITE ) an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time.
You can also reach out to peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.
Give ( YOU ) a quick reward when you complete an assignment or task. Take a walk, get a snack — whatever works for you. Then move on to the next project.

Most days, I feel happy and satisfied with my habits. I feel accomplished about my learning progress. I have the big picture of what I intend to accomplish in mind. On those days, I feel unstoppable.
But then there are those other days. Those days when things don’t go quite so well, and the bad things start to pile on each other.
Those days when I am so unmotivated that I start to question why. Why do I even bother learning languages. What’s the point, when I’m so bad at it, especially when it comes to speaking? Why not just stop? After all, it doesn’t matter either way…
It’s on those days that I realise that I need motivation.
Life isn’t always smooth-sailing. It’s what you choose to do in the difficult moments that will make the difference. It’s what separates failure from success.
It’s important to learn how to self-motivate, because you can’t rely on others to do it for you.
I want to share the following 3 tips are great for a quick motivational boost that will help you get excited to continue working hard all over again.
Tip 1: Reach Into The Past
Reach into the past. Basically, think back. There are two parts to this.
First, think about why you got started with learning the language in the first place. If it helps, you might want to write it down.
I have found that putting it down in writing makes it more concrete, and more effective than simply thinking about it. You can get any scrap piece of paper to do this; it is for your eyes only.
It is perfectly fine not to have one big reason. In fact, write as many reasons as you can think of, even those that might seem rather insignificant.
In a language class, you might feel obliged to give a reason that sounds acceptable and reasonable. Many of the reasons that I have are personal, that I don’t necessarily wish to share. I hate the feeling of being judged for my reasons, because they seem so impractical. I would always say something generic like “I love the culture” when in truth I had zero knowledge about the culture.
My relationship with languages is complex. I don’t have a single reason for learning any one language, and now, with each new language I learn, many of the reasons overlap, creating a complex web. But all the ones I have are important to me.
That’s really what matters: That you have reasons for learning a language that matter to you.
So write each and every one of them down.
To quote Jim Rohn, when the why gets big enough, the how becomes easy.
Second, if you have been learning the language for a while, then recall the incidents where you felt like you could do anything in your target language.
It can be as simple as the first time you had a meaningful conversation in the language.
It doesn’t even have to be very long.
One of the good memories I have for French is from 2013.
Back in 2013, I was on immersion in Geneva, and I took a day trip to a mountain in France together with some of the other students. From the bottom, there was a cable car that took you near the top, and from there, there is quite a lot of space to walk about.
On the way down the mountain, I met a French family.
The father asked: Parlez-vous français ? (Do you speak French?)
I was shocked, but I replied: Un peu. (A little.)
He asked: Où est le téléphérique? C’est là-bas ? (Where is the cable car? Is it there?)
I replied: Oui. (Yes.)
This was the first conversation I remember that I ever had with a native speaker outside of the classroom context. I didn’t speak much, but the feeling of being able to understand and be understood? Amazing. It was a major victory to me.
It doesn’t have to be something long and convoluted. It just has to make you feel accomplished, and rekindle your passion for the language.
Tip 2: Imagine The Future
This second tip requires you to use some imagination. Imagine what the future would be like for you, if you were to keep going as you are right now. What do you envision yourself to be able to do in your target language?
Start with the general idea. Perhaps you want to be able to speak and write well enough to take a job in Germany. Or to speak without an accent that people mistake you for a native speaker.
Imagine the scenario actually happening. This includes the setting, the time, the sounds… everything you can possibly think of. The more detailed, the better.
Where does it happen? On the street, in a restaurant, on the bus?
How are the surroundings like? Is the weather cool?
This exercise in imagination was something I learnt from two independent sources. One was a book that was more to do with public speaking with confidence. The other was an audio program about goal setting.
The first time I did this, I felt rather silly. I had not used my imagination for so long that it was awkward and foreign. It was downright weird.
But I figured I had nothing to lose. So I used it to prepare for a presentation at work.
I didn’t expect it to work as well as it did. My presentation was well-received by the clients, that I became the de-facto presenter for my team. (We used to rotate.)
That first time, I didn’t even imagine the setting in very vivid detail. I wrote down how I wanted it to go, and some of the reactions of a few people whom I knew would be there.
But as I did it more, it started to feel more natural, and it was effective.
And I thought, why not use if for language learning as well?
I found that it was really useful as a motivational boost, and I also have something to work towards and look forward to.
Just give it a try.
Tip 3: Do What You Love
This is for the present, for the now. Think an activity that you are good at in your target language, and that you love doing.
Ask yourself what you normally enjoy doing. (Normally, because if you’re down on motivation, you might not really want to do anything at all.)
Then do it.
If it’s writing, then write a short piece in your target language. Maybe you love to read comics. Then read a comic in your target language. If it’s listening, listen to some music in your target language. Or perhaps you just want to watch a movie. That’s fine too, as long as it’s in your target language. You can even play a game.
Though, it’s more effective if the activity that you choose is not only something that you love, but isn’t too easy to do. This way, it can fuel your sense of accomplishment when you get it done.
The sense of accomplishment that comes will raise motivation faster than anything else.
Know that it is a normal part of the process to feel unmotivated at times.
I have shared 3 tips for boosting motivation. You can apply them from time to time when needed. However, if you really want to successfully learn a language, what you need to do is to cultivate the habit of working at it every day. That way, you don’t end up relying on motivation to keep going, because motivation only lasts so long and takes you so far. It’s simply not sustainable.
Accept that it will not be effortless. To achieve anything, hard work is required. But when you finally achieve what you set out to achieve, it will be well worth the effort.
Do you have any tips for boosting motivation? How do you normally overcome the urge to give up when you don’t feel up to it?

Writing Can Be Fun: Tips to Boost Your Desire to Write
November 18, 2016| Category: Careers in Writing, Freelance Writing, Writer Jobs
Whenever one comes to a decision to start writing, there comes a challenge of defining whether one is capable of doing this kind of job and turning it from a hobby into a full-time employment. I believe this is absolutely possible; however, there is a need to define what motivates us to write and what drives our decisions. Therefore, I would like to share the tips for boosting your writing motivation.
Have the right attitude
Primarily, we should consider writing as something that brings us fun and joy. In the opposite case, i.e. when one takes it as purely as a job, it is impossible to feel satisfaction from writing. Unfortunately, many beginning writers initially consider writing as a job, not a way to spend time with joy and fun. This is the major reason why before anybody starts writing, he or she should think about it as a way to spend time in a useful manner and with a positive approach. Otherwise, it would be impossible to fully relax and have fun while writing. This is why every writer should remember that as long as he or she considers writing as a job, they would not be able to relax and enjoy while completing their job.
Take a break
Next, remember to take a break between writing numerous essays. Although some experienced writers may say they can work 24/7, long-lasting continuous work will never lead anyone to success. Every work has to be followed with some decent rest. In other words, whether you like it or not, find some time for relaxation and entertainment, and this is how you will be able to keep up working for hours or even for days without a big break. Since writing as a job takes a part of part life, we have to find the alternatives that would allow us to spend some time out of it, leaving the job behind.
Feel proud
Third advice you will receive may seem somewhat strange, yet this may change your life significantly. Start thinking of writing as of some masterpiece you create every time you engage in the writing process. In other words, make sure you are the first person to realize how important your writing is. This would enable you to share your views and ideas with others. This is crucial in both short-term and long-term perspectives, as such positive approach and capability of feeling proud of your work will lead to other people seeing you the same way. In such case, when both yourself and other people would be perceiving you this way, you will be always happy to keep on writing and sharing joy and happiness with the people surrounding you.
Make friends with other writers
Last, yet definitely not the least important tip on how you may boost your writing is by making friends with other writers, or suggesting your current friends to become writers. Even though writing is individual, you should not forget that sometimes ideas mysteriously skip your mind, and it might turn literally impossible to come up with the great idea for writing on demand. This is a perfect case when the friends may come to rescue you from the approaching disaster by dropping in some fresh thoughts and ideas that were omitting you somehow. Also, talking about writing with friends may shed some new light on the issues in writing you may face from time to time. Therefore, it is important to have friends who are writers as well, so that in any tough situation you would have someone to reply on and the person who would support you in making a complex decision.
Following these easy and simple tips, it will be extremely simple to be always tuned into writing and remain focused on it. Thus never stop writing and creating new masterpieces.

Выберите только ОДНО из двух предложенных заданий (38.1 или 38.2). Укажите его номер и выполните согласно данному плану. В ответе на задание 38 числительные пишите цифрами.
38.1 Imagine that you are doing a project on what motivates people in Zetland to do volunteering. You have found some data on the subject — the results of the opinion polls (see the table below).
Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.
| Motives | Number of volunteers (%) |
|---|---|
| Helping others | 45 |
| Gaining knowledge and developing new skills | 23 |
| Socializing | 13 |
| Building confidence and self-esteem | 11 |
| Broadening experience | 8 |
Write 200−250 words.
Use the following plan:
— make an opening statement on the subject of the project;
— select and report 2−3 facts;
— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments;
— outline a problem that can arise with volunteer work and suggest a way of solving it;
— conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of volunteering for society.
38.2 Imagine that you are doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland spend their money on. You have found some data on the subject — the results оf the opinion polls (see the pie chart below).
Comment on the data in the diagram and give your opinion on the subject of the project.
What teenagers in Zetland spend their money on
Use the following plan:
— make an opening statement on the subject of the project;
— select and report 2−3 facts;
— make 1−2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments;
— outline a problem that can arise with spending money for teens and suggest a way of solving it;
— conclude by giving your opinion on the role of shopping in teenagers’ life.
Спрятать пояснение
Пояснение.
38.1 People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. While doing a project on what motivates people in Zetland to do volunteering, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.
According to the diagram, 45% of the young volunteers in Zetland are motivated just by helping others. As much as 23% of the surveyed do volunteering to gain knowledge or to develop some new skills. Broadening experience is chosen by 8% of the respondents and thus proves to be the least popular motivation behind volunteering.
The data analysis reveals that volunteering as a way of socializing, chosen by 13% of the polled, is only by 2% more popular than building confidence and self-esteem, favoured by 11% of the teenagers in Zetland. It is not surprising, because mixing socially with others and boosting self-assurance and self-respect are closely interrelated and almost equally important for self-development.
Although volunteerism is per se doing something noble and serving those who need care and affection, it can be time-consuming and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem, one should look for volunteer opportunities that require only a few hours of spare time each month, otherwise school or university studies will be neglected.
In conclusion, I believe that volunteering is really important for society as it is an extremely rewarding experience, giving people a chance to make an impact on the lives of others, whether directly or indirectly. Besides, volunteering provides both emotional and psychological benefits. (250 words)
38.2 Shopping is both a routine and a pleasure and there is hardly anyone who doesn’t like it. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland spend their money on, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.
According to the diagram, 34% of the teenage boys and girls in Zetland spend their money on clothing and footwear. Technology is the second popular category with as much as 29% of the respondents. Another noticeable fact is that only 8% of the surveyed mention spending money on entertainment.
The statistics analysis demonstrates that spending money on clothes and shoes, chosen by 34% of those polled, is twice as popular as spending money on travelling. Surprisingly, entertainment costs are at the bottom of the list and are by 4% less admired than spending money on personal care. It is clear that modenrn teenagers take care about themselves and thier look.
Although spending money is an exciting activity, not all teenagers can spend their money wisely and that seems to be a problem. Creating a spending plan could be one of the solutions to the problem. A teenage spender should write down all the sources of income they make including pocket money and part-time or summer job wages and analyze their expenses. This could allow young shopaholics to manage their cash responsibly.
In conclusion, I’m convinced that shopping is really important for any adolescent: at this stage of life it teaches young people to become moneywise, satisfies their social needs, helps to create good consumer habits and finally it is really fun. (266 words)

Задание № 2781
1. Motivating opportunity
2. Books come first
3. Teachers to come first
4. Junk food — out
5. Numbers come first
6. Relevant for today
7. Learn by using
8. Fewer and worse
A. High school students have rights protected by the Constitution like everyone else, but it is complicated. There is no one set of rules. State laws differ from federal laws, and school board regulations vary from place to place. Students discover what rights they have by trying to exercise them, and, if prevented, taking the school to court.
B. Kids who live on junk food grow up to be fat and unhealthy, so schools should teach good health. They should fill their vending machines with health foods, and lunch programs should serve nothing but nutritious meals. If some kids complain, so what? They complain about algebra, too.
C. There is a new five-year program that lets students earn a high school diploma and two years of college at no cost. It is getting kids who are at risk to become more mature in the lower grades, to take college-preparatory courses, study harder, and focus on a career. Once in the program, very few drop out.
D. Neuroscience (brain science) is finding out how teaching affects the brain. It has discovered pre-school kids can learn numbers and simple math because the number instinct is hard-wired in the brain. So is the language instinct, but teaching kids to read is harder. It takes longer for the brain to connect sounds with letters—up to 11 years.
E. In hard times, colleges must be relevant. Today’s students want Chinese and Arabic, not Latin and Greek. Economics is in demand; and even English classes are teaching how to network, write a resume, and present oneself in an interview. It is not a good time to be a philosophy professor.
F. Computers help with drills and practice, but they are not much help in higher-level thinking. In the lower grades, money is better spent on new textbooks, music programs and the arts. In the higher grades, there is no choice. Everyone should learn to use the electronic genie.
G. The US program, No Child Left. Behind, seeks to place a qualified teacher in every classroom. But where is the pool of qualified people out there waiting to teach disadvantaged kids in the cities? US policy should provide better training and support for those already teaching. They could start a new program and call it No Teacher Left Behind.

1. Living by yourself
2. Personal discoveries
3. A clean home
4. Simple home repairs
5. Difficult travels
6. Personal possessions
7. Living in harmony
8. Difficult tasks
A. Setting up an aquarium in your home is a fairly simple process, but maintaining it is important if you want the fish to survive. You’ve got to make sure the water filter gets changed every so often, and you must regularly replace some of the dirty water with fresh water. Doing this ensures the health of your fish; after all, they have to live in that tank!
B. There are some things almost anyone can do to improve a bathroom, like installing a new shower curtain. Other things like blocked drains or faulty pipes are more tricky, and usually need the assistance of a professional. They’re probably not jobs you want to undertake on your own, as without skill and experience, you might end up with a disaster like a floor flooded with water.
C. Sharing your things with others is a good way to build character and promote generosity. However, you need to have some things that you can say are yours alone, and belong to no one else. This is true for many electronic devices, such as mobile phones and laptops. Having to constantly share something like that with a sibling, for example, can be a nuisance.
D. Taking a guided tour can be a hassle-free way of seeing sights in a new town, but there’s a bit of adventure lacking from such things. It’s a great feeling to freely wander round a new city armed with your own map and a keen sense of direction. With a bit of planning and some courage, you might just embark on the most memorable of journeys.
E. Caring for fish doesn’t take a lot of know-how; however, certain fish can’t live together peacefully. You should consult an expert who knows about fish and which varieties can happily share space with one another. Some varieties of fish absolutely cannot live with other fish in the tank, so make sure you do your research before you put random fish together.
F. Putting your faith in a guided tour can sometimes be… well, misguided. It all depends on how extensive the tour guide’s knowledge of the sights is and how passionate they are about showing them to you. Another problem can be the sheer number of activities packed into the tour. You might find yourself exhausted after the first day. Sometimes quality is better than quantity.
G. For many things round the house that need attention, there’s no need to hire a professional. If you’ve got a light fixture that you want to replace, you should be able to climb up a ladder and unhook it as long as you’ve turned the power off. If you’ve got a loose tap, you might be able to fix it with just the use of the right tool.

Anatoli Tarasov
It takes a tough coach to lead a team to victory, even though such a coach may bring controversy. This was the case for Anatoli Tarasov, one of ice hockeys greatest coaching legends ___ (A).
Tarasov, a former ice hockey player himself, was tasked with building an ice hockey team from scratch for the Soviet Union after World War II. At that time, ice hockey was not very popular, but Tarasov had fallen in love with it, was particularly skilful at it ___ (B).
So, Tarasov founded the ice hockey department at CSKA Moscow, the country’s leading sports club. His early career didn’t see a great deal of success, and he was replaced by a rival coach, Arkady Chernyshev, who didn’t fare much better.
