What Your Clothes Say About You
People wear clothes to protect their bodies from the cold or the burning sun, from insect bites and injuries, and from the unwelcome eyes of strangers. However, what people wear can also convey a message about who they are and their role in society.
For example, visit nearly any country in the world and you will notice that young people everywhere are wearing fashionable blue jeans, not for work, but for social occasions such as parties and concerts. The jeans are somewhat of an index of how these young people view themselves: I’m modern and stylish. l’m relaxed and confident. I’m different from the traditional older generation. I’m sexy. Jeans make such an important statement that, in some groups, a person might be judged by the brand of jeans he or she is wearing. As a result, some young people feel pressured into spending hundreds of dollars to acquire a single pair of designer jeans just to be in fashion.
An even more direct means whereby people make statements about themselves is via messages printed on T-shirts. One says Oxford
University. Another reads Italy 2006 World Cup. There are many kinds of T-shirt messages. They can convey allegiance to schools and sports teams, advertise places or products, make political statements, serve as wearable travel souvenirs, and commemorate important occasions. These wearable messages are seldom ambiguous. They clearly tell others, This is what I want you to know about me. Just as blue jeans and T-shirts say a great deal about the people who are wearing them. So does the Western business suit. It says that the person wants to impress others with his or her professional status. A fitted jacket and matching trousers constitute a man’s suit, while a fitted jacket and matching skirt constitute a woman’s suit. A collared shirt and a necktie are integral parts of the man’s outfit, while stockings and high-heeled shoes complete the woman’s. Often this attire is not what the person chooses to wear, but it is what a company requires its top- level employees to wear. The business suit is so conventional that it is analogous to a uniform in other occupations.
A uniform identifies the occupation of many people. Military personnel are easy to identify by their uniforms. The same is true for civil emergency personnel like police officers and fire fighters. Medical workers, airline pilots, and members of religious orders are other examples of people whose work can be identified by their clothing. In certain contexts, special clothing is worn to differentiate not only the occupation of people, but also their authority For example, when a court of law convenes, the judge’s robe is a clear indicator of her role and authority, Similarly the chef’s tall white hat indicates his job and that he’s in charge in the restaurant’s kitchen.
Clothing might also show which group a person belongs to. For example, Scotsmen wear distinctive tartans to show their clan affiliation, just as city street gangs wear colored headscarves to show their gang membership Similarly; school uniforms identify children as students at to a certain school.
Societies choose different ways to show marital status. In Western societies, women— and often men—wear wedding rings on their left hands. Other cultures use different symbols.
Hindu women, for example, wear a red powder in their hair after they marry. Unmarried Amish women wear black bonnets on their heads, while married women wear white ones.
Clothing serves many functions beyond just protecting our bodies. Clothing can tell a lot about the people who wear it.

It’s no news that your wardrobe says a lot about you.
What you wear can inform passersby of your type of employment, as well as your ambitions, emotions and spending habits.
And now it’s even launched a whole new type of psychology.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner literally wrote the book on this phenomenon, which she calls the «psychology of dress.» In «You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You,» she explains not only how psychology determines our clothing choices, but how to overcome key psychological issues your wardrobe might be bringing to light in your everyday life, or even at work.
«Shopping and spending behaviors often come from internal motivations such as emotions, experiences and culture,» says Dr. Baumgartner. «You look at shopping or storing behaviors, even putting together outfits, and people think of it as fluff. But any behavior is rooted in something deeper. I look at the deeper meaning of choices, just like I would in therapy.»
We spoke with her to figure out why clothes are so revealing (of our personalities, that is), what messages they’re sending and how you can use your wardrobe to change how others perceive you—and even how you think about yourself.
How We Use Clothing as an Aid … and a Weapon
Americans rely on clothing as an economic and social indicator because there aren’t official marks of rank such as a caste system or aristocracy, says Dr. Baumgartner.
«When you don’t have a specific system, people come up with their own,» she explains. It’s what «helps you figure out where you fit in. Especially now, with the economy, with people losing status, maintaining a sense of who we are becomes even more important. Our clothes help place us where we think we want to be. «
She cites the Real Housewives TV series as an example: «Look at the way they focus on money. When they fight, they use logos and designers as a way to put each other down. They’re using clothes and accessories both as a tool to know where they fit in and as a weapon against others.»
Clothing That Projects a Good or Bad Image
Have you ever been told that you can judge a man by his shoes? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.
There’s no one piece or style that makes a person look successful. Dr. Baumgartner recommends the basics when trying to project a positive image: the little black dress, the blazer, the pumps. «With classics, history has done the work for you. It has lasted throughout time, so you already know it works,» she says. And what is it that makes a classic a classic? «It has multiple functions, and it’s appropriate for different age ranges and body types. It became a classic because it works no matter who you are.»
(To help you choose the best wardrobe items to use and reuse, LearnVest created the Essential Outfitter.)
On the other hand, there’s no one piece or style that makes a person look unsuccessful. «Anything where it looks like you didn’t take the time or make the effort comes across badly,» says Dr. Baumgartner. «The worst clothing is the kind that tries to undo, ignore or hide where or who you are, or the kind that shows you didn’t pay attention to your body/age/situation … Any clothes that prohibit you from doing your job well send the wrong message.»
What Your Clothes Say to You, Not About You
A study this year from Northwestern University examined a concept called «enclothed cognition.» Researchers define it in their report as «the systematic influence that clothes have on the wearer’s psychological processes,» meaning what your clothes are saying to you, not about you. And how they make you feel.
The researchers distributed standard white lab coats to participants, telling some that it was a doctor’s coat and some that it was a painter’s smock. All participants performed the same task, but those wearing the «doctor’s coat» were more careful and attentive. Their actions were influenced by their clothing.
The same may be true of you. When your friend dragged you out of the house and told you, «Get dressed up! You’ll feel better!» after your last breakup/failed interview/lousy day, she was onto something. «When you dress in a certain way, it helps shift your internal self,» explains Dr. Baumgartner. «We see that when we do makeovers, and even actors say that putting on a costume facilitates expression of character. That’s just as true for everyday life.»
Enclothed cognition gives scientific proof to the idea that you should dress not how you feel, but how you want to feel. Which clothes make you feel powerful? Sexy? In control? Wealthy? The clothes you choose are sending a message to those around you, but also to you, yourself.
In «You Are What You Wear,» Dr. Baumgartner features some of the most common wardrobe and perception problems. Do you recognize yourself in any of the below?
| If you … | You might … | Consider: |
| Keep every piece of clothing you’ve ever owned | Be clinging to the past through the sentimental value of your pieces | Adopting the Golden Wardrobe Ratio: Get rid of 2 out of 3 items you own, including anything too big/small, ripped/torn or outdated. |
| Wear only neutrals, largely devoid of accessories | Be stuck in a psychological rut, too comfortable to shake it up, or too afraid to draw attention to yourself. | Deviating from your routine in small ways (a different route to work, a few new spring accessories—like these inexpensive ways to incorporate trendy polka dots—to jog your brain into feeling excited |
| Dress in clothing too large for your body | See your body differently than others see it, or as a reflection of the way it once was. | Bringing an honest friend shopping to find out what looks great on you, ignoring sizes and getting used to wearing clothes that really fit. |
| Have been told you’re dressed inappropriately or too sexily | Consider the same outfit appropriate for every occasion (i.e. clubbing and family barbecue), or be looking for the wrong kind of attention. | Consider the image you want to project in given situations (at work, on the town) and choose outfits based on cues from those around you |
| Dress too young (or too old) for your age | Be trying to express the age you feel you are, but getting caught between your actual and internal age | Gearing your outfits toward your goals (like getting a promotion, meeting a significant other, traveling the world), rather than a specific age. |
| Are always in work clothes | Value yourself primarily through your work and work-related accomplishments | Recognizing your talents outside of work (great artist, compassionate, fun to bring to parties, etc.) |
| Covered in designer logos | Think you need to broadcast wealth in order to be treated well by others | Practice wearing «blank canvas» pieces and only accenting with logos to emphasize that people value you for more than your labels |
| Live in your «mom outfit» of jeans and a hoodie | Put the needs of your family before your own | Take more «me time.» Remember: When mom isn’t happy, nobody is. |

Clothes are a basic essence of our society, fully evolving and civilized. It’s the one thing that does not differ nor is absent in virtually any part of the world. Our clothes become a part of us, an integral part of our identity. In other words, they portray a sense of image of the person living within us.
It’s impossible to go without clothes–even during swimming or just a good ol’ hang out with the pals on the beach, we’re clad in our swimwear. Might not be much, but eh, they’re still covering up the bare necessities. For us girls, it has a deeper meaning than just being a part of what we wear.
Clothes are very important in giving off the vibes or just giving a glimpse of our influences and interests in culture, colour, shapes, designs and even texture. Some adore silk, it’s indeed such a breathable fabric. Others prefer tops made out of cotton materials, it’s great cooling properties allows users to maintain a dry, soft feel while retaining its strength as a natural fibre composite. Viscose and polyester also represent popular clothing materials, especially in activewear, sports and travel attire.
The interesting thing is, our clothes actually says a great deal about each one of us. The clothes and shoes you adorn displays an estimate of your type of job position, spending habits, income level and also your personal emotions and personality. Some wear clothes just to fit in, not wanting to display their own feelings and emotions into what they wear outside. Many, like me, prefer to hide in baggy clothes and off size sweatshirts- simply because I just don’t want to think ahead of my outfit and sometimes, I just don’t feel comfortable in the clothes I wear.
That can tell you a lot about a person. A person who chooses to hide behind thick and heavy layers of clothing (doesn’t have to just be covered) may be feeling insecure and uncomfortable about their figure or weight size, they could even be covering up a deeper secret behind all those clothing layers. See, the interesting thing about humans is we have been on this earth, centuries upon centuries, studying and observing the trend of fashion among society yet we can’t seem to look beyond the clothes a person wear. I do believe that what we wear; is what we want others to think about us.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that what we wear is a measure of who we truly are and represent in our short cycle of life on Earth. We simply go through seasons of emotions, moods and feelings and not one of us can turn it off. I mean, we probably would if we could. It would definitely be easier to handle.
To fully portray my point, let’s take the Real Housewives TV show for example. Designer brands and signature Chanel bags used by the ladies as a status symbol shows just what a weapon our outfit suggests. When they argue, they don’t just use words, they’re using the brands and accessories as a tool to show where they stand at the hierarchy of popularity, power, rank and wealth. It’s used as an extension of fame, focusing on literally what money can buy and how to use that to advantage in comparing lifestyles within societal members.
Why does one consider blazer, tie and glossy shoes as a measure of a high-ranking job or to display success? Why does one judge a woman by the length of the skirt she wears to dinner? Is longer better or is shorter fashionable? When we walk in for an interview, why do we adorn the little black dress, blazer and black pumps? It’s an example of a classic look, one made possible through years and years of history.
But what makes the classic a classic? These are a few important questions I’m afraid there’s no straight way to answer it. On the bright side, not one piece of clothing makes a person look unsuccessful. However, if it looks like you didn’t pay enough attention or care to make your clothing work, then it comes off as a negative outlook. When choosing what to wear, choose wisely, practicality and comfortability are two big words that stand out from the other criterions. Elegance and style would be top for Coco Chanel lovers, however!
If you’re looking to create your own unique style, take all the time you need. Some people find their style early on, mainly celebrities, fashion icons and movie stars. However, if you do need an extra hand to choose a style, there are 7 different fashion styles for you to consider:
- Sporty (If you are a big fan of sporty clothes, you probably have a big exposure to physical activity and it conveys confidence, optimism, focus and a determination to push barriers in life.)
- Feminine/Girly (Covered in lace, floral prints and pastel colours, you are the vision of innocence and naïveté beauty. Plus, it also shows your composure, calm attitude and thoughtfulness.)
- Clean and Simple (Sometimes referred as a tomboy look, the user opts for a clean T-shirt with no frills/poof situation paired with killer jeans represents the look of modern comfort, kindness, honesty and being earnest.)
- Making a statement (This style doesn’t need an introduction or attention –it demands it.)
- Free-Spirited (Wild and flowy dresses are a big component of this fashion style, and inspires a carefree, enthusiastic, creative mind with an adventurous heart for adventure.)
- The trend-setter (This style caters to evolving, androgynous and extravagant pieces of clothing that makes up a look fit for the fashion stage or bust.)
- Homely and traditional (Think plaids, button-ups and comfy uggs. It displays a sense of resourceful, productive and energetic aura about this style!)
Conclusion
Humans, although constantly evolving and discovering newer places, creatures and things– we have yet to fully ponder on what’s inside of us. Maybe the brightest and biggest discovery lies within us, potentially closed off to the strangers passing by. We have to just tap into that primary source of inspiration and discover ourselves before we discover the world around us.
