7. A new way to buy

8. Too much choice

A. When you are tired and don’t want to cook, just pick up the phone. Restaurants are expensive and take some time and effort to reach if you don’t live in the centre of town. Ordering food for home delivery is cheap and these days there is a huge choice. Indian and Chinese are the most popular but I prefer to get in a pizza.

B. A school group on a skiing holiday to Italy narrowly avoided disaster when their coach left the road and fell eighty meters into a valley. Trees slowed down the falling coach and because of the fresh new snow the vehicle landed quite softly. Amazingly no one was injured.

C. A teenager from London is making news around the world. On his recent holiday in Australia he set off without his mobile phone. Experts are amazed that he is still alive after walking for fourteen days, surviving extreme temperatures and living off the land. However, a lot of Australians are unhappy with him. The rescue cost is estimated at more than 100,000 dollars.

D. You can buy almost anything, new or second hand, on the internet. On one site you can offer the price you want to pay for something. Whoever offers the highest price can buy that item. Recently I made the highest offer for a nearly new pair of skis. However, I only paid half of what they would have cost new in a shop.

E. Making new friends on the internet makes so much sense. You can see someone’s photo and read if they share your interests and opinions. The important thing is you can spend time getting to know people who are attractive to you and looking for the same things in life that you are. Still, for personal safety, most sites recommend that in person you meet initially in a public place like a cafe or a gallery.

F. I like eating out but some restaurants have huge menus. And usually every item sounds mouth watering. The trouble is I like to read about everything on offer and sometimes waiters wait for me rather than on me! The other issue is how they can offer so much whilst maintaining quality? I’d rather take one of five options knowing that each one was brilliant.

G. “Facebook” is a social networking website that has 250 million members and despite lots of criticism by employers, governments and media, continues to attract thousands of new users daily. In spite of claims of concerns about privacy, safety and wasting time at work, “Facebook” is one of the most rapidly establishing phenomena of recent years.

Self-confidence is an integral part of the equation of personal and professional success—and it comes easier for some than for others. Refer to the FORBES Top 100 Power Women. The list runs the gamut from heads of state to a race car driver to chief executives of some of the nation’s largest companies.

What’s their secret? Is it a motley combination of supernatural drive, Machiavellian wit, dumb luck, brute force and an innate sense of office politics? Since there’s not a lot of research on this subject, I went to the experts—a sociologist, psychologist and New Yorker (Yes, The New Yorker) cartoonist—for their thoughts.

Photo Gallery: Confidence Boosting Dos And Don’ts

Christy Glass, Ph.D., is a sociologist at Utah State University who recently published a study finding that overweight women are significantly less likely to achieve career success than their thinner peers—no matter the educational or socioeconomic status of their families. While prospective employer biases may explain part of this effect, much of it is due to the fact that overweight women were significantly less likely to complete college than other women, despite equal talent and ambition. (The same was not true for overweight men.)

So how does personal confidence play into professional achievement? Glass suggests that confidence has to do with one’s inner perception of his or her ability to fulfill a particular job or role in society. To be sure, Glass also says that much, if not most, self-confidence is influenced by the world around us. This includes our crazy families, supportive friends and employers (likely falling somewhere between crazy and supportive)—not to mention People magazine and Victoria’s Secret.

“Self-confidence doesn’t exist in a vacuum,” says psychologist and founder of Compass Point Consulting Suzanne Roff, Ph.D. She believes confidence is largely built through our dealings with the world.

Having the internal sense that one’s actions impact the outside world is a large part of confidence – and in this way, it’s a two-way street. “When a goal is identified and accomplished well, confidence can increase,» says Roff. And because our personal situations, social networks and relationships with ourselves are ever-changing, confidence is not static -– which is a very good thing for those who are trying to build more.

Are there gender differences in confidence? Absolutely, says Liza Donnelly, the well-known New Yorker cartoonist who has taught Women’s Studies at Vassar College. She suggests that the distinction goes back to how men and women learn to behave in society in their early years.

“Women are not taught to exhibit self-confidence, and in fact are taught the opposite,» says Donnelly. «Women often wait to be discovered, wait to be called upon. Asking questions, providing ideas and offering to be the person for the job are all things that we, as women, often wait for. But this only holds us back.”

Men, on the other hand, generally don’t hold their breath to be chosen. They tend towards the “my opinion is needed here” attitude, continues Donnelly. It’s an attitude that everyone should possess, and luckily, it’s one that is learnable.

An interesting note: there’s a transparency to genuine confidence, which makes it harder to feign and easier to learn. Roff says that the “fake it ’til you make it” attitude can come in handy at certain times, but “too much arrogant false confidence is not only a turn off but a potential symptom of low self-confidence being masked.”

By the same token, when you lack confidence, others pick up on this, and may put less stock in your abilities. Rather than “faking it,” it makes more sense to spend the energy developing the authentic variety. “Practice makes perfect and our brains learn from practicing new behaviors,” says Roff.

The bottom line is that self confidence comes from the inside out and the outside in. Changing long-held attitudes about yourself and your reactions to others is one part of the equation. This part can be done through inner work, like therapy, coaching, assertiveness training and engaging in new activities like improv classes.

The experts agree that equally important is being in an environment that fosters positivity. Glass stresses the importance of the office climate for professional women: “Workplaces that provide women all the tools they need to succeed are likely to be characterized by a large number of confident women. Occupations or careers that present women with systematic barriers and negative evaluations by peers are likely to have a lot of women ‘opting out’ or not entering in the first place. While these women may blame themselves, or regret that they were not confident enough in their abilities, the real culprit in my view is the occupational context.”

The important thing is that confidence can be thought of as a learned behavior. It’s just a matter of discovering the best tools and resources to help you develop it. Here’s how:

Is confidence inborn or acquired? Is it nature or nurture? Here are a few insights about confidence that may help you see it more clearly and experience it more readily:

  1. Experience: Through experience and training – trial and error and repeating patterns – you gain confidence. Even when you are skilled in a given area, it is only with years of experience that you become confident in yourself and your accomplishments.
  2. Peer support: Peer support is another important factor in gaining confidence. Beginning in early childhood, the support we get from our parents (or lack of it) directly affects our level of self-confidence. When a child is acknowledged and encouraged, assured and complimented, that child builds courage and learns to trust themselves. As we grow older, we look to our friends and colleagues for support and confirmation.
  3. Confidence is mysterious: Even with experience and peer support, confidence remains somewhat of an elusive mystery. Many experienced people who have all the support in the world may still be insecure and lack self-confidence. Others have deep self-confidence despite their lack of experience and affirmation.
  4. What confidence isn’t: Confidence must not be confused with persistence or audacity, or with boldness and nerve, just as it shouldn’t be confused with cockiness or arrogance. Many bold actions can be driven by forces other than self-confidence.
  5. True confidence is rooted in the soul: How can we ever be secure and confident in a world where everything is always shifting and changing? The only permanent thing in your life is your soul – but all people have souls, so why are some more confident than others? Because security comes from a connection to your soul, resulting in a profound self-confidence in your soul’s capacity.

We have two voices within us: the secure voice and the insecure one and the confident voice and the unconfident one. The insecure voice is the one that identifies with the impermanent things in our lives. To tap into our inner sense of security in an insecure world, we need to connect to and practice conscious awareness of our soul.

If you feel you can’t easily access this inner resource that’s just beneath the surface, scrape away the outer “crusts” that conceal the energy within. Psychologically, this is called behavioral change; external change brings internal change. Shift your routines and this will in turn shift your inner moorings. Shift breeds shift.

One way to create such shift is to “fake” it. Project and believe in the possibility even when you are not in the mood. Act confident even when you may not feel that way. When you behaviorally “pretend” to act according to the true nature of your soul – when you align your outer self with your inner self – you actually give your soul the opportunity to be actualized in your life.

Choose a cause you believe in and jump in with confidence, even if you have fears. Project confidence, and true confidence will often follow. Believe in your soul. Believe in yourself. Everything is possible.

    правильный ответ;
  • Писать подробно, чтобы ответ был исчерпывающий и не
