What Does the Future Hold?
Have you ever thought about the future? One of the most amazing predictions I have heard about the twenty-first century is that we will be living longer and longer. Scientists will have A22 comeup with a cure for a lot of the most common diseases that people die of at the moment. They say that by the year 2050, the average person’s lifespan will have A23 risen to one hundred years.
They also predict that work will take A24 up less of our lives and we will have more free time to spend. Robots, which will look more and more like human beings, will have taken A25 over a lot of the boring everyday jobs we do today. In the next ten years, the Japanese will have A26 invented a robot that understands human speech. This is not science fiction: the optimists say that by the year 2020 we will have created humanoids with brains similar to those of an adult human being. This will A27 bring about a big change in the way we live.
However, many experts feel pessimistic about the future. They predict that people themselves will look like robots. They will have microchips in various parts of their body, which will connect them to a wide variety of gadgets. Some experts even see robots as a A28 threat to human freedom. They are afraid that we will not be able to control them and that in the end, they will control us.

A. The longbow was England’s “secret” weapon in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was longer and more powerful than other bows and because the arrows travelled further — it proved decisive in many battles. Every man between 15 and 60 was required to own one and practice regularly. Surprisingly this actually had an impact on social and political development in England. It was difficult for Kings to behave like tyrants if every adult male in the land was expert with their own deadly weapon!
B. In 1688 King James II of England had a son. It was his intention that the boy be raised a catholic and that the absolute power of Kings in England be restored. The birth of that son changed everything. Parliament rose against the King and invited a Dutch protestant prince, William of Orange, (James’ nephew) to become a figure head King, under parliament. The people sided with parliament, James went into exile and a Dutchman became King William III of England. Democracy was born and not a shot was fired, or person killed.
C. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) is argued by some people to be partly responsible for the global spread of the English language. This was because the famous diarist was largely responsible for the complete reform and modernisation of the British Navy. Some argue that his reforms paved the way for Britain’s colonial expansion over the following 200 years. One might suggest therefore that Pepys, s hard work for the Navy indirectly impacted the size and global reach of the British Empire and the global export of the English language.
D. On July 4th 1776 Declaration of independence was approved and circulated. It was not signed on this famous day of celebration as people commonly believe. The most probable date was August 2nd. The document contains some of the most quoted words in the English language — including the right to “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Ever since these words have shaped the American nation and are loved by those who stand against injustice and discrimination in every walk of life.
E. Charles Darwin’s theories of natural selection and evolution made a huge impact on Victorian Britain and in time throughout the world. Until the early 19th Century the vast majority accepted and believed that all things were created by God. This determined what life was for and how it should be lived. Imagine then how people reacted when Darwin provided evidence that our very existence stemmed from
impersonal and natural processes. It was many years before his ideas were accepted and even today, some people still believe in Creation.
F. “Remember, Remember the 5th of November” begins the famous poem commemorating the Gunpowder plot of 1605. What is less well known is that what eventually became known as “Guy Fawkes Night” or “Bonfire Night” was established by the Thanksgiving Act in Parliament in January 1606. It is even possible that Fawkes knew his attempted destruction of the government would be marked annually as his execution was on the last day of January. From the very beginning there were bonfire parties and fireworks just as there are today.
G. Until the end of the Second World War the UK could hardly have been described as a multicultural nation. But the passing of the British Nationality Act in 1948 changed this forever. Because there was a labour shortage in Britain after the war, the Act invited 800 million subjects of the British Empire to live and work in the UK without a visa. The European Union added to this process and the result is that the UK is one the most multicultural nations in the world. Of course there are some who are deeply unhappy about this. But there are a greater number who rejoice in the country’s cultural diversity.

Clare
She had no intention whatsoever of going to the mainland like many of her friends (who thought she was mad). But Scotland meant nothing to her. She may have been just sixteen years old but she was a Shetland Islander: daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter to A to her beloved family.
She had no illusions whatsoever. Her friends were correct in this: crofting is hard work and to succeed required all the God given hours of day. Short winter shifts to seemingly endless summer days were filled B routines — just to survive. They would never be
Rich.
Clare’s family worked a croft (a piece of land) of almost 8 hectares. It was better than average growing land with fine views C. A small part was preserved for taking peat and the largest part for growing fruit and vegetables: strawberries under tunnels of polythene, winter potatoes and cabbage. D they kept sheep and from time to time goats. They even tried pigs once but this wasn’t a success.
Of course — E— the croft did not provide enough money. Her father and brother were also part-time professional fisherman and all of the family had various part — time jobs to make ends meet.

Dmitry
1847. It was his toughest year and they had all been tough. As a 13 year old living in Verhnie Aremzyani he did not know, for example, that a lady had just published a book called “Jane Eyre” or that she’d used a false name, Currer Bell, to disguise her gender. Nor would he have known that 6000 miles away a town called Yerba Buena was being formally re-named. Dmitry hardly knew what was happening in Tobolsk, let alone Moscow. He had far more pressing problems. At an age when for other children happy childhood might have been giving way to purposeful adulthood — Dmitry knew only despair. His father Ivan Pavlovich was dead. His mother’s livelihood in a nearby factory had been destroyed in a cruel fire. Dmitry may not have known about Charlotte Bronte or San Francisco (as Yerba Buena had been re-christened) but he certainly knew hard times lay ahead.
Dmitry was the youngest of 14 brothers and sisters. Being the youngest had its advantages in terms of maternal and sisterly affection. It possibly also helped in his educational development. For two years he attended the Gymnasium in Tobolsk and did fairly well. But the family was now really poor. At the age of 15 they all relocated to St Petersburg — hoping for a better life. Dmitry entered the Main Pedagogical Institute and successfully graduated. Things seemed to be looking up — when disaster struck in the form of tuberculosis or TB.
TB is a dreadful disease. Usually the victim suffers from chronic, disabling fits of coughing. Fever, night sweats and dramatic loss of weight follow. We may suppose Dmitry suffered all of these because he made the sudden decision to travel to Crimea where, it was supposed, the warm southern climate would provide a better cure than any medicines. And so it proved. Dmitry became a science teacher at Simferopol Gymnasium No 1. When he returned to St. Petersburg in 1857 — his health was fully restored, his career as a scientist could properly begin.
In late August 1861 his first book (on the spectroscope) was published. In 1862, after an engagement lasting just 23 days, he married Feozva Nikitichna — a marriage that was to sadly end
Disastrously and cause serious damage to his career. The following year, aged 29, he became Professor of Chemistry at the St. Petersburg Technological Institute.
On March 6th, 1869 Dmitry made a formal presentation to the Russian Chemical Society. A lot of other things were happening in 1869 and without doubt Dmitry was aware of most of them. Certainly he would have read that Ulysses S Grant had been elected 18th President of the USA and that the Suez Canal was complete. Probably he didn’t then know that a new synthetic material called plastic had just been patented or that a ship called The Cutty Sark was on its maiden voyage. But in a sense, none of these things were as important as the paper delivered that evening by a certain Mr. Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev.
As a result of that presentation, Dmitry was credited as being the creator of the first version of the periodic table of elements. Fantastically, using his table, he was able to predict the properties of elements yet to be discovered. From tough beginnings, Dmitry rose to be one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known.
Next time you are on the metro, line No9, passing south from Savelovskaya towards Moscow City Centre, spare a moment to remember Dmitry — the boy from Verhnie Aremzyani.
A15∣ Mentioning “Jane Eyre” and San Francisco in paragraph 1 the author probably wants to
1) show how much young Mendeleev knew about the world around him.
2) demonstrate how obscure Mendeleev’s childhood was.
3) point our attention to the times in which Mendeleev’s childhood ended.
4) stress the point that Mendeleev grew up being very ignorant.
We learn from paragraph 2 about Mendeleev’s family that
1) Dmitry suffered from lack of family love.
2) Dmitry had 13 elder brothers and sisters.
3) it had always been extremely poor.
4) they helped him to study at the Tobolsk gymnasium.
A17∣What, according to the author, helped Mendeleev to win over TB.
1) becoming a science teacher.
2) traveling around Crimea.
3) getting better medicine.
4) change of climate.
A18What does the author say about Mendeleev’s marriage to Feoza?
1) It helped him to get a professor’s position.
2) It had bad influence on his career.
3) It lasted only a few days.
4) It happened when he was too young.
A19According to the author in 1869 Mendeleev was sure to know about
1) election of president Grant.
2) invention of plastic.
3) the Cutty Sark voyage.
4) new patents on synthetic materials.
Тренировочные варианты ЕГЭ
A20 Of all the important events in 1869 Mendeleev’s presentation was special as
1) Dmitry was credited as the creator of the periodic table of elements.
2) it was proved that tough beginnings may have glorious endings.
3) it showed the possibility to predict properties of undiscovered elements.
4) Dmitry became one of the greatest scientists of the world.
A21 The last paragraph probably implies that
1) everyone should visit metro line #9 in Moscow.
2) there is a metro station named after Mendeleev.
3) Savelovskaya station is related to the life of Mendeleev.
4) when in Moscow metro, remember Mendeleev’s discoveries.

London, New York and Moscow
London, New York and Moscow are my favourite cities in the world.
I am lucky enough to have spent a amount of time living and working in each. Having to choose one would be. POSSIBLE
I love these cities and it would be like asking to say which your
Favourite child is. But that is not to say they are. DISTINGUISH They have different characters, moods and of course different qualities.
I am English, generations of my family were born in London and unquestionably the longest period of my working life was in this City. It is full of history, fabulous and beautiful parks. BUILD
But London, in terms of sheer energy, bustle and buzz cannot
come close to New York. Just walking the streets is REALIST exciting. If you could smell and taste optimism this would be the place to breathe it all in.
But over the last 10 or 15 years Moscow has won my heart. These have been years of constant change and reinvention. Moscow has also, arguably, become the new capital of the planet. CULTURE
But if I am honest it is not the wide streets, or the admittedly
architecture that most excites me. It is the people. IMPRESS
Moscow seems to be really welcoming to most foreigners. I for one feel completely at home in the city.

I can’t believe it! I wanted so much to visit India and when the chance came I saw McDonalds, western clothes and all the same shops we have in London. I suppose this is the result of globalization. Is it the same in Russia? Are old Russian traditions and customs still observed? Do you think this is important or should we just accept that the world has changed?

A. Sergei Rachmaninoff studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory before moving alone to Moscow to study piano under Nikolai Zverev and Alexander Siloti (who was his cousin and a former student of Franz Liszt). He also studied harmony under Anton Arensky and counterpoint under Sergei Taneyev. Rachmaninoff was found to be quite lazy, failing most of his classes, and it was the strict regime of the Zverev home that instilled discipline in the boy.
B. Josef Hoffman was a virtuoso pianist and composer of more than IOO pieces of music. He was the first recorded artist (in 1890 by Thomas Edison). These first examples were lost in the First World War but several others made in Russia during 1895-1896 were recently discovered and reissued on CD. Born in Krakdw and later a US Citizen, Hoffman spent quite some time in Russia. In 1913 he was presented with a set of keys to St. Petersburg.
C. Ludwig Van Beethoven died during a thunderstorm on March 26, 1827. The moment he died there was a huge outbreak of thunder — a dramatic end to a life characterized by greatness and sadness, joy and pain. Most difficult for the great pianist and composer was the gradual loss of his hearing from the age of 26 onwards. And yet, in his near silent world, he created some of the most spectacular and beautiful music ever written. It is so sad that many of these great works were never heard by the man who made them.
D. In 1912 Vladimir Horowitz entered the Kiev Conservatory, where he was taught by Vladimir Puchalsky, Sergei Tarnowsky, and Felix Blumenfeld. He performed Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor at his graduation in 1919. His first solo recital was performed in Kharkov in 1920. Horowitz’s fame grew, and he soon began to tour Russia where he was often paid with bread, butter and chocolate rather than money, due to the country’s economic hardships caused by the Civil War.
E. Franz Liszt became extremely famous throughout Europe during the 19th century for his great skill as a performer. At the time some people argued that he was the most technically advanced pianist of his age: Others said simply that he was the greatest pianist of all time. Besides he was an influential composer, an inspirational teacher and a pioneering conductor. He also helped and influenced other composers and performers,
notably Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saens, Edvard Grieg and Alexander Borodin.
F. Walter Wilhelm Gieseking (1895-1956) was one of the most popular concert pianists of his age as well as being a composer and famous for his ability to learn new repertoire with an almost super human ability to memorise. His career was damaged unjustly, as many believe, because he gave concerts during the war in Nazi Germany. His defenders argue that he was German, lived in Germany and had no involvement in politics. Still — before his death in 1956 he was again playing to packed audiences.
G. Mozart died at 1 a. m. on December 5, 1791 at the age of 35. He was buried in a common grave, in accordance with contemporary Viennese custom, at the St. Marx cemetery outside the city on December 7. If, as later reports say, no mourners attended, that too is consistent with Viennese burial customs at the time. Later, in 1856 Jahn wrote that 5 musicians were present and that their tale of a storm and snow is false — the day was calm and mild. Within a year or two of his death, his name was known in every household of the old world.

Arkhip
Arkhip Kuinji was born in 1842 in Mariupol on the Azov Sea. His family originally came from Greece as refugees during the reign of Catherine II. His father made a living making and repairing shoes but tragically both he and Arkhip’s mother died when the boy was just six years old.
Incredible though may seem to us — this meant that Arkhip had to start work for pay. He had no opportunity whatsoever to receive any formal education. Instead he divided his time between labouring, farm work and being an assistant at the corn merchant’s shop. But this unfortunate child had a special talent: He could paint and draw exceptionally well.
Aged 18 he moved to the Port of Taganrog in 1860; at more or less the same time that Anton Chekov was born — in the very same town! For five years he worked in a studio retouching photographs. He even tried, unsuccessfully to open his own photography studio. This was at more or less the same time a Mendeleev gave the world his periodic table! But eventually Arkhip headed north to the city of St. Petersburg hoping, no doubt, to do something with his natural artistic ability.
Once there, he evidently was allowed to attend classes at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and he also benefited from some training in the workshop of the famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky. For the next few years he studied, painted and exhibited whenever he could. In 1873, he travelled around Europe and thoroughly studied the works of great masters. On his return, however, he began to develop his own unique style.
In his early landscape paintings he often sought to capture seasonal moods. But after 1874 he became increasingly interested in painting “light”. He obtained striking effects by using vivid colours, chiaroscuro contrasts and simple but cleverly conceived designs. He began to make spectacular paintings that greatly moved contemporary viewers.
Possibly his most famous painting, “Ukrainian Night” (1876), opened a new romantic stage in his work. He achieved such astonishing results, that people, who saw the picture for the first time at an exhibition, tried to check its back, to see if there was any special source of light. Exhibited at the Paris World Fair in 1878, “Ukrainian Night” won praise from the most eminent French critics.
Through years of experimentation, Arkhip developed his own highly original techniques, which he applied increasingly to the treatment of subjects such as snow-covered mountains and moonlight. It is sad for us today that some of his experiments with paint led to problems of deterioration and many of his luminous canvases soon darkened.
In 1894, he accepted an invitation to become a professor of the Academy. He was very fond of teaching and his students admired him. Unfortunately his career of a professor did not last long (he was dismissed for supporting students in their protests against authorities) but he continued to teach his students privately. Later he presented the Academy with a big sum of money, the interest from which was to be used for awards to young painters. In 1909, the year before he died at the age of 68, he founded The Kuinji Society, an independent association of painters, to which he left all his pictures and property.
Starting from such a disadvantaged background, few have achieved as much or given so much pleasure to so many people as young Arkhip from Mariupol.

Times are Changing
I grew up in tiny village in East Anglia — population 210 people. Everybody knew each other and seemed to know everyone else’s business. What strikes me now — looking back A22 40 years ago — is that the village contained several social groups and there were clear distinctions and unspoken (and certainly unwritten) rules of engagement.
We had two A23 class families living in the village: The Brandings, who lived in the
Manor house, and the very honourable Archer family. The Brandings were well A24 but
Certainly not rich. They were extremely posh and so were the Archers who — on the contrary — were fabulously wealthy. But socially — the Brandings and Archers were A25. They could socialise with the vicar and my family (because my Dad was an RAF Officer) but their contact with the other villagers was A26 to friendly but polite greetings. Then we had 8 or 10 middle
Class families; teachers, a scientist, a factory director and so on. In so small a village we knew each other well and socialised a lot.
The A27 comprised of the true working class. They worked in shops, or on the farms.
We had also had quite a few elderly couples who in their young days had been “in service”. We didn’t socialise but relations were friendly and we greeted on first name terms.
It’s all changed now of course. Our village is a small town — far too large to be anything like the community of my youth. I may be wrong, but it seems like society has contracted into featureless A28 and that nowadays people often don’t even know their neighbours’
Names.

10. Установите соответствие между заголовками 1—8 и текстами A—G. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.
1. For adventurous skiers
2. Especially good in autumn
3. For the rich and lazy
4. Not just for gamblers
5. Like an island in heaven
6. Film-makers like it
7. Looking down from up there
8. Probably the best one of five
A. If you go to the Insular Mountain Range of Vancouver Island and face the open Pacific Ocean, be ready to experience the magnificent natural and cultural heritage of Canada’s west coast. If you decide to go deeper into the island, you will find a lush coastal rainforest that gives way to bountiful and diverse intertidal and subtidal areas. And to top it all off, there are breathtaking beaches that make this an island paradise.
B. The resort town of Whistler is about a two-hour drive from Vancouver. Whistler offers visitors fine food and spas, but mostly it is popular among tourists for the opportunities it offers for adventure. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains make Whistler one of the best destinations in the world for first-class skiing. The passage between the two mountains creates a unique terrain one mile above the village, providing a year-round skiable territory.
C. A prized national treasure, Banff National Park is one of five national parks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It attracts millions of visitors each year for camping, hiking, biking, skiing, fishing or just relaxing. A full range of accommodation, restaurants and shops can be found in the resort. Two of the most famous and historic Canadian hotels, the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Chateau Lake Louise, are located in these towns as well.
D. Niagara Falls is maybe the most famous in the world, attracting millions of tourists each year. However, it has a certain reputation for being partly a small-scale Las Vegas and a theme park, because in addition to Niagara Falls the tourists can visit a casino resort with fine hotels and restaurants. Although this area is improving very quickly and everyone can easily find what they like, the Niagara region as a whole is worth deeper exploration.
E. Tourists are naturally drawn to tall buildings where they can get a bird’s eye view of a city. The CN tower, located in downtown Toronto, is the tallest free standing structure in the world. Unfortunately, elevated observation usually comes at an equally elevated price, and the CN Tower is no different. However, tourists love it and the glass elevator takes them to the glass-floored outdoor observation deck which is a real thrill for both kids and grownups.
F. The 300 km long Cabot Trail is famous for its panorama views of the Atlantic Ocean. The trail is especially popular in the fall when the views are the most spectacular. Even though the drive into this area usually takes a few hours, once there, tourists can spend a day or two stopping in at one or two of the towns along the trail, relaxing and enjoying the magnificent nature all around.
G. By North American standards, Vancouver is a young city. But what it lacks in history it compensates for with its unique blend of urban and natural features. Thanks to its high- fashion boutiques, it has earned the nickname “North Hollywood.” Vancouver’s breathtaking views are often chosen as the setting for popular television shows and major motion pictures. Often tourists are surprised to recognize landmarks from their favorite films and shows.

Magnificent mysteries
“Dynasty and Divinity”, the first big exhibition devoted to African sculpture from the Kingdom of Ife (in present-day Nigeria), begins an 18-month tour of America. The show, which consists of a number of works in stone, terracotta and metal made between the 9th and 15th centuries, is a genuine revelation and a rare treat. Art from dramatically different cultures is often hard to connect with, as is their languages, traditions and ways, but these sculptures are naturalistic and remarkably accessible.
More than 100 works are on display. Some have been abroad before, some have left Africa for the first time. Text and photo murals on the walls instruct visitors about the ancient kingdom, which had been an unbroken monarchy for more than 800 years.
The background information is interesting but limited. The art itself makes a powerful impact. Some of it is unnerving. A few of the terracotta heads are gagged; others are deformed either by birth defects or disease. A dozen or more heads in copper alloy are exciting in a less complicated way; their faces radiate serenity. Ten of them are life-sized. The three that are somewhat smaller are topped by gorgeous crowns decorated with what appears to be rings of beads. These heads are beautiful, technically sophisticated and compelling.
Some of the objects in the exhibition definitely used to play a part in rituals. But were they made for that purpose? There is no answer as Ife has no written early history. Many of the works were chance discoveries. There is no archaeological record to help scholars find answers to the many questions that they raise. Were the copper-alloy heads the work of a single artist or workshop? Are the heads portraits or idealised images? It is almost impossible to be sure of the sex of one or two.
In the 15th century metal casting in Ife stopped abruptly. The reasons are quite clear. This was when the Portuguese arrived on West Africa’s coast to colonise it. The neighbouring Kingdom of Benin supplanted inland Ife as a trading centre and the metal casters, as other craftsmen, may have moved to where they were more likely to find patrons. For this speaks the fact that the best of Benin’s famous, more stylised samples of bronze were made between the 15th and 18th centuries. But the memory of the greatness survived, and Ife remained and still remains the spiritual home of the Yoruba-speaking people.
In 1910 Leo Frobenius, a German explorer, saw Ife’s superbly modelled terracotta sculptures and a single brass head. He was so stunned that thought they were too good to have been made by Africans and concluded that the sculptors must have been survivors of Atlantis, the submerged island of Greek legend. Along with expressions of excitement, there were echoes of this reaction in 1938 when Europeans first saw a cache of newly unearthed brass heads.
Now these reactions , seem shockingly bigoted or, at best, quaintly narrow-minded: the skill and imagination of African artists is generally recognised. Ife sculpture is seen to be sophisticated, not primitive. Appropriately, the show is touring art, rather than ethnographical, institute. Its last stop before returning to Nigeria will be in the handsome new building of New York’s African art museum.

The Art World
One of the major problems in the art world is how to distinguish and promote an artist. In effect, a market must be created for an artist to be successful. The practice of signing and numbering individual prints was introduced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the nineteenth- century artist best known for the painting of his mother, called “Arrangement in Grey and Black,” but known to most of us as “Whistler’s Mother.” (A) Whistler’s brother-in-law. Sir Francis Seymour Haden, a less well-known artist, had speculated that collectors might find prints more attractive if they knew that there were only a limited number of copies produced. (D) By signing the work in pencil, an artist could guarantee and personalise each print. (I)
As soon as Whistler and Haden began the practice of signing and numbering their prints, their work began to increase in value. (B) When other artists noticed that the signed prints commanded higher prices, they began copying the procedure. (II)
Although most prints are signed on the right-hand side in the margin below the image, the placement of the signature is a matter of personal choice. Indeed, prints have been signed within the image, in any of the margins, or even on the reverse side of the print. (C) Wherever the artist elects to sign it, a signed print is still valued above an unsigned one, even in the same edition. (III)
