A32. В этом задании проверяется знание идиомы love at first sight. Она довольно часто встречается в тестовых заданиях, поэтому ее стоит выучить.

Some people, it is said, fall in love at first A32 ______, but that was not what happened to them.

A33. Давайте посмотрим на следующее задание.

В данном случае, чтобы подобрать правильный вариант ответа, можно использовать либо переводной метод либо знание грамматических особенностей данных глаголов. Начнем с последнего.

Глаголы achieve, reach и complete являются переходными.

Что такое переходные глаголы? Это такие глаголы, после которых должно обязательно стоять беспредложное дополнение, чтобы предложение имело смысл. После нашего пропуска стоит предлог with, это значит, что данные глаголы не подходят. Остается arrive — он и является правильным ответом.

Чтобы проверить правильность выбранного варианта, переведем:

Both had A33 ______ with major scholarships to read English language and literature. — «Получив стипендию, оба приехали, чтобы изучать английский и литературу».

A34. Приступим к разбору следующего пункта, в котором проверяется знание разницы между many, much, little, few.

Посмотрим сначала на слово после пропуска. Почему это важно, вы можете узнать в одной из наших статей. Там мы видим исчисляемое существительное во множественном числе — students. Это позволяет исключить варианты much и little, которые употребляются только с неисчисляемыми существительными.

Чтобы понять, какой из оставшихся вариантов, правильный, необходимо перевести как предложение с пропуском, так и предшествующее, чтобы понять, что автор имеет в виду:

Each had been reliably assured by their schoolteachers that they would be the star pupil of their year. A34 ______ students had such prospects. — Школьные учителя заверили каждого, что они будут лучшими на курсе. Немногие студенты имели такие перспективы.

Исходя из перевода, видим, что подходит few. 

Ответ: few

A35. Посмотрим на следующее задание.

He never A35 ______ it.

Ответ:

• dissatisfied
• disappointed
• regretted
• apologized

Первое, на что следует обратить внимание, — это то, что предложение содержит отрицание never. А в английском языке, как известно, действует правило одного отрицания, поэтому сразу исключаем варианты глаголов с отрицательной приставкой dis-: dissatisfied и disappointed.

Остались regretted и apologized. У глагола apologize есть предложное управление for, когда есть дополнение: apologize for – извиняться за что-либо. В имеющемся предложении есть дополнение it, а вот предложного управления for нет. Следовательно, это тоже неподходящий вариант. И методом исключения остается regretted. Давайте переведем, чтобы проверить.

He never A35 ______ it. — Он никогда не сожалел об этом.

Обратите внимание, что глагол regret не требует предложного управления: regret smth.

Ответ: regretted

A36. Сначала посмотрим на место пропуска в предложении. Он между подлежащим и сказуемым. Значит нам нужно наречие, которое ведет себя, как наречие частотности, то есть может стоять между подлежащим и сказуемым. Все они могут быть на этом месте, поэтому разбираем каждое из них детально.

They taught each other most of the time and he A36 ______ acted as a referee.

Ответ:

• rarely
• merely
• nearly
• hardly

Начнем с hardly. Это наречие не подходит, так как обычно идет в сочетании с ever: hardly ever – почти никогда. В данном предложении после пропуска нет ever, поэтому исключаем этот вариант.

Чтобы понять, какой из оставшихся вариантов подойдет, нужно перевести предложение, подставив все три наречия: nearly, rarely, merely.

They taught each other most of the time and he A36 ______ acted as a referee. — Они поучали друг друга большую часть времени, а он выступал почти что/ редко/ просто в роли рефери.

Сразу убираем nearly, которое означает «почти, около, приблизительно, почти что». Это слово не подходит по смыслу.

Rarely в значении «редко» не подходит по контексту также, так как по переводу видно, что выступать в роли рефери ему приходилось постоянно.

Остается наречие merely, которое переводится как «просто» и подходит в данном случае.

A37. Снова задание на знание идиом. 

It A37 ______ as no surprise to anyone that, as the examiners felt unable on this occasion to award the prize to just one person, they A28 ______ decided that it should be shared by William and Philippa.

В данном предложении это come as no surprise – не удивлять.

Ответ: came

A38. В этом задании предстоит вспомнить слова-связки. Более подробно мы писали о них здесь (linking words: 1 тип, 2 тип (1 часть, 2 часть, 3 часть), 3 тип).

It came as no surprise to anyone that, as the examiners felt unable on this occasion to award the prize to just one person, they A38 ______ decided that it should be shared by William and Philippa.

• nevertheless
• therefore

Сначала посмотрим на место пропуска. Он между подлежащим и сказуемым, следовательно отпадает although. Это союз и обычно с него начинается придаточное предложение. 

Остались три линкера: however, nevertheless, therefore. Будучи союзными наречиями они все могут стоять между подлежащим и сказуемым. Значит, необходимо перевести:

It came as no surprise to anyone that, as the examiners felt unable on this occasion to award the prize to just one person, they A38 ______ decided that it should be shared by William and Philippa. — Никого не удивило, что когда экзаменаторы не осмелились вручить приз кому-то одному, они в этом связи решили, что он будет поделен между Уильямом и Филиппой.

However и nevertheless не подходят, так как переводятся «однако» и используются в тех случаях, когда нужно показать контраст с предыдущим предложением или его частью. В данном предложении нет контраста, а присутствует следствие, поэтому therefore.
