So its 3:23am, perfect time for a blog post right? So I’m sat here in bed, armed with my phone and my tiny keyboard – 가자!
Through a combination of talking about my travel experiences with a friend, and reading another blog* which had been recommended to me, I was inspired to finally write this post about my travels. I had the idea of writing about my study abroad experience for a while now, something to summarise all of my experiences combined, or just something to show how much I’ve grown as an individual, but I found it difficult to craft my thoughts into words.
Throughout my travels I’ve had the opportunity to see some amazing cities and landscapes, but deep down, seeing all those things wasn’t the reason I wanted to travel. Sure, it’s a part of it, but the thing that I enjoy the most is sharing experiences with new people. It’s amazing how travel can bring together strangers from different cultures to share moments of exploration together.
Meeting different people, learning about difficult cultures and listening to travelers’ stories – that for me, is what made my journey worthwhile.

South Korea (韩国)
Sitting alongside the Han river, we ordered chicken and beer to be delivered to the riverside as we sat alongside hundreds of other students. In my eyes, it felt like something that was really special – everyone around us sharing stories with their friends, catching up after a busy week, or even just to sit together to eat and drink. It was a community that we’d become a part of.
I sat with my friend Max I’d met at UNNC, my girlfriend Georgie from the UK, and our newly found Korean friend Eunice. We’d all been brought together by our love to travel and explore other cultures, and it was lovely to have an evening just immersed in conversation and embracing our surroundings.

Taiwan – (台湾)
We travelled through Jiufen village to see the inspiration for Spirited Away, followed by Houtong Cat Village (where it rained so much, urgh). We took shelter from the rain in a nearby shop and managed to send off a postcard to my friend Michelle in Amsterdam. As I watched the rain run down the glass door, it reminded me of a phrase I’d swore by on my travels – “when it rains, it pours”. It was metaphorical in the sense that when something went wrong, it went wrong pretty bad ? But hey, I guess it’s never an adventure until something goes wrong.
An amazingly coincidental moment happened during our travels though. We’d met a Swizz girl at our hostel in Taipei called Aline who we’d explored a night market and ate dinner with. At the end of our time in Taipei we said our goodbyes and parted, and my friends and I head towards the South of Taiwan to 台中. On the day we were going to Sun Moon Lake, we saw Aline in the morning waiting for the bus (roughly 200 miles away from Taipei!) It was an amazing coincidence, but we spent the day exploring the lake on bicycles – it was awesome.

Oh China, how we have a love hate relationship. I miss China a lot, whether that be the friends I met abroad (s/o to Nichole from America that we stayed up drinking all night with you on the last day to see you off in the taxi at 6am), or the immense experiences and vast environments I faced while travelling.
I remember one time on a 26 hour sleeper train (it was really, really long…) I was busy trying to catch up Mandarin work from classes I’d missed while I was travelling. People started to walk past and stare at me writing Chinese characters. It’s rare for them to see foreigners on a sleeper train, most foreigners opt for high speed rail or at least a soft sleeper cabin. However, since we’re broke students we travelled on a hard sleeper. In the process we met and spoke to many Chinese people on our carriage which was a great way to exchange language – we even had a security guard who read my homework and offered us food out of his lunchbox!
Another Chinese friend of ours was Sue. She’d never been travelling much before with friends and she’d decided to join us on some of our adventure. I don’t think she was prepared for what we had to face: being hassled by taxi drivers, getting dropped off a 6 hours walk away from our hostel and having to spontaneously find a new place to stay, or getting caught in a rainstorm. Despite these hiccups, it was a pretty awesome experience. We all grew closer together as friends, but in the end we had to part ways. ?

From all my travelling experiences, people have asked me questions like ‘oh, so did you find yourself out there’?
Maybe I didn’t exactly find myself, but the realisation that really hit home was the fact that everyone has different stories to tell and experiences that they have been through. I’ve learnt to appreciate how people from all over the world, speaking different languages, can come together and share something amazing even if it’s only for a short amount of time. That realisation is what has kept me travelling and exploring new cultures.
So, if you ever get the chance to talk to internationals – talk to them about their experiences, if you ever get the chance to visit another country – go and immerse yourself in their culture and finally, if you ever get the chance to study abroad – you better take it because you will have realisations along the way and grow as an individual.

This is so true. The world is such an intriguing and complex environment. When we are young we have our parents to guide us but then there comes a point when we’re on our own.

This is especially true when you’re abroad in a country you don’t know with a language you don’t speak.
We traveled independently through China and we must agree that we underestimated how challenging this would be. We often were completely helpless. There were no English-speaking ticket offices in the train stations and to our surprise we didn’t meet that many people who spoke English during our trip.
But those people who spoke English really did anything they possibly could to help us. They never took advantage of us, they never asked anything in return.
They just seemed happy to help us.
They acted as an honest friend and that’s something I will never forget about our trip.

This traveling with friends quote reminds me of a lot of a story we experienced when we were traveling through Vietnam a few years ago.
We were hiking and accompanied by a local tribe that didn’t speak English.
Suddenly one of our fellow hikers slipped out in the mud and she desperately tried not to fall. It was really funny to see how she alternately was gliding forward and backward.

Once she had regained her balance everybody started laughing including the ladies of the local tribe.
This really shows how all people are the same and even when we come from completely different backgrounds, and we don’t speak the same language, we still have more in common than we think.
This event even broke the ice.
Before this happened we had no contact with the local tribe but when we continued onward we were helping each other to cross the muddy parts and we tried to do some basic conversation.

Its been a long, long time and as you can imagine a lot happened. . . but let me start with the best thing that happened since last time I was in touch with all of you. I am super thrilled to let you all know that I am a proud godmother to a wonderful little baby girl! When it comes to my Australian adventures I’m once again not sure where to start but let’s go back to Xmas. I was really excited about Xmas & New Year not only because I had a lot of amazing plans but also because I was expecting to live in Bondi with 4 lovely friends from Melbourne who came all the way up to celebrate the festive season. Unfortunately, the trip in Sydney started off horrible! We arrived at the flat, where we rented a room, to find that the room had been given to someone else. . . so there we were, 5 people homeless in Sydney. Thanks to Charming William we managed to get to stay in the flat, however the five of us had to sleep on the floor 😦 Imagine 10 night sleeping on the floor and unfortunately I am not the youngest any more, my whole body was aching. . . we still had a wonderful time because after all it’s the people that make a place. Xmas eve was spent on a boat cruising around the Sydney Harbour and let me tell you we had such an amazing night. . . well how could we not, there was free booze and an amazing atmosphere 🙂
I started off the new year on Bondi beach with Snoop Dog who warmed up the crowed and Pendulum who made sure we did not want to go home. It was just amazing the whole atmosphere, the people, the music. . . it was really all about getting drunk, not going to sleep, living young, wild & free 😉 However, after the whole festive season was over I realised I was not feeling Sydney like I used to. I have to blame myself mainly for it, if I am honest, I was just not making any effort. I did not feel like making new friends in the hostel I moved to. While you travel what you do most is small talk and make new friends, which as you can imagine I have no problems doing so, however this time I just did not feel like making new friends, I just wanted to be able to sit down and be surrounded by my friends without having to make any effort. I guess the 10 days on the floor and everything that went wrong during the festive season took away a bit of my travel enthusiasm. It was big brother who made me come back to reality and made me realize I am making this trip for myself, so if I don’t feel happy it’s because I don’t want to be happy. I started thinking what I actually wanted and the only thing I knew was that I needed to follow my heart and my heart was telling me to go back to where I belonged, which is Melbourne.
So here I am now, back in Melbourne for the third time, and I am having the time of my life again. I am loving every single minute! The welcome I received when I got back made me just realise that I had made the right decision!
A journey is best measured in friends!
To get some variation we try to do something during the weekends. Hence, Dan had the great idea to go on the great ocean road trip. Almost half of the hostel joined, & it was one of the best weekends I had since I am in Australia. There was 20 of us ready to go mental for three days, just drinking, singing, dancing, enjoying each others company and of course playing shimmy shimmy 🙂 We experienced everything you can actually expect to experience during a road trip. Having 4 cars we did of course manage to loose one of the cars, we got stopped by a police officer called Ashley ( a male police officer called Ashley to clarify), we spend more time in the car than actually seeing the beauty of the great ocean road, we almost got kicked out from a camp site & we even started to like the taste of warm beer. . . all in all it was just a unique experience, so thanks to Sarah for organising it & I look forward to the next road trip!

I will def stay down in Melbourne until I head over to New Zealand to meet my god-daughter, just because I don’t feel like going anywhere else. It’s like they say, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it 🙂 especially now that some people got their own house and there are a lot of house parties to be held & BBQ to attend I can’t leave and miss out on all of this fun times 🙂 I’m so convinced this is the right place I am even trying to get a waitressing job in my favourite place. Not only so I get some money and some entertainment but also I get to eat the delicious food they serve! & to make Melbourne even more attractive at the end of the month I’ll be able to regularly do some Jitsu, thanks to Tim and his dedication to start a club in Melbourne. Exciting times & even if I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, I am determined to get my light blue belt by the end of the year. . .
I could go on telling stories, but I gotta get ready for work (wow, feels weird to say getting ready for work after not doing anything for the last 4 month)

This summer I have traveled to three different states excluding West Virginia, my home nine months out of the year, Pennsylvania, my permanent residence with my family and New Jersey where my family and I go for day trips to the Jersey Shore!
My first trip was to Orland Park, Illinois. Orland Park was my home until I was 15 when my dad was offered a new position at work and my family was transferred to PA. The last week of June we loaded the van and drove across PA, through Ohio and Indiana to Illinois, a trip lasting a total of 12 hours. We were in Illinois for just about a week. Whenever we visit we stay with my mom’s parents, my Oma and Opa. Their house is smaller then ours so while the six of us are visiting it is a little cramped but I love staying at their house and miss being able to see them whenever I want. We also held a graduation party for my brothers at my dad’s parents house, my Grandma and Grandpa.

My dad is one of five and my mom is one of two. There are 12 grandkids, 4 of which are married, and 5 great-grandkids on my dad’s side. There are six grandkids on my mom’s side. As you can imagine our family parties are always big and very lively. I had previously seen most of my family members earlier this year at my cousin Mike’s wedding; but before that had not seen them in about two years. I had a great time visiting with everyone, sharing my most recent experiences, what I plan to do in the future and listening to their advice for as I move forward. The visit went by too fast. The biggest disappointment from the move, and I am staring to tear up as I write this, is that we are not able to see everyone as often. We stay in touch through phone calls and e-mails, but it is not the same as physically being there. Both sets of my grandparents and my dad’s sister and her husband have been out to visit us at least two times each. I enjoy having them here too because then we can show them how we adapted to life in PA and they can see first hand all that we share with them via phone or internet.
My second trip was to visit my friend Chrissy in Virginia just a few days after returning to PA from IL. Last summer my dad had enough frequent flyer miles for a one person round trip, so he offered it too me to fly down to see her. This time I drove myself, a trip lasting only four hours. Chrissy and I met the summer going into our freshman year at WVU. We both attended a week long camping trip through Adventure WV.

I am not a huge camper but I would give anything to go back to that week if I had the opportunity. Our trip consisted of 20 freshman journalism majors exploring the natures of West Virginia. My freshman year would have been a completely different experience had I not went on this trip and met the people who for that first year I would call my best friends. Unfortunately, as time past we all became more distant but Chrissy and I are still best of friends and I grateful for having her in my life! But I digress. I had a short 5 day visit in VA. We ventured into Washington DC braving the 110 degree weather, spent a day and night at her Lake house visiting with her grandparents from out of state and hung out with her friends who I have come to call my friends as well! I was so glad I got the opportunity to visit again. It was a last minute trip and because of commitments with my internship could not last longer, however I wish it could have! I plan to visit again, that is if she’ll have me!

My third trip was to Atlanta, GA for the Golden Key International Summit! I was in Atlanta for only a weekend but accomplished a lot! The summit was held on the Georgia Tech Campus. Being the only delegate from WVU to attend I was placed in a room with girls from Ohio. I later realized I was placed in their room because WV, OH and KY make up the fourth region of GK. At first I was nervous and felt very alone because I did not know anyone or where I was. Throughout the weekend I met many people from my region and beyond, and became more comfortable navigating the campus. The delegates attended workshops to learn how to better your chapter and how to brand Golden Key on your campus, as well as personal/professional development. After the workshops we had an open day to explore Atlanta. A group of about 15 of us took the GATech Trolley to the MARTA to Underground Atlanta.

It was a cute street, literally underground, of shops and vendors. We enjoyed dinner at a Jamaican restaurant then headed back to campus. The next morning we took part in a Project Live Love community service event, helping in a garden built by and for refugees living in Clarkston, GA. The last night of the summit included a dinner and motivational speech at the Georgia Aquarium. I am so glad I attended the summit. Last year our chapter did not have much involvement, which I found to be true for most of the chapters present this past weekend. After all that I learned about Golden Key and what other chapters are doing to create more involvement I have plenty ideas to kick start a great year at WVU. I can only hope that the other officers are on board, if not we will have to compromise and or put our heads together to think what will work best on our campus! There is a regional summit coming up in February 2013. I am more then excited to attend, to see all my new GK friends and to discuss how the International Summit helped flourish their chapter as well!

I was chatting with a friend earlier today, catching up with each other’s lives. This particular friend of mine is an active AIESECer having done an internship in Istanbul, been apart of the Congress Committee in Hungary, and is now helping establish AIESEC in Albania (!!!). Talk about a crazy AIESEC experience, and a major role model. It is experiences like these that challenge the individual to learn more about the world. For example, did you know in Albania that you can only get water 3 times a day? You have huge tubs to collect water and when you run out, you have to wait until the next time the water is on. This absolutely blew my mind.
I met this particular friend when I was on the Congress Committee for Global Leaders Summit in February of this year. We traveled to Slovenia together and then a couple weeks later, she went home, without knowing when I would ever see her again (but I’m sure I will see her, its not a matter of if, but when). This speaks to the transient nature of my relationships in Budapest.
I was very lucky to have met some amazing people when I first arrived in Budapest, all of whom had similar contract lengths and would all be leaving around the same time as I was. But life never turns out the way you plan it, and for various reasons, all of my close friends started to leave, one after the other. The past 3 months has been particularly difficult with 3 of my closest friends in Budapest leaving – one a month.
My friend asked me what my plans are after the end of my contract. I’m entertaining a bunch of ideas right now, with no solid plans. For sure I will go home for a little bit, but then where to next? I’m not sure if I want to stay in Canada and I don’t think I want to stay in Budapest. This city is starting to make me sad. Most of the people that made this city special to me have left it and I’m left with memories. Everywhere I go, I am haunted by the memories of people who use to be here, who I shared those memories with.
When I told my friend this, she completely understood. Living abroad is all about the people you meet. They make the experience what it is and with out them, everything is different. I still like the city of Budapest itself, but its vibrancy and allure has somewhat diminished now that those I associate with the city have left it. I am thankful for the friends that I’ve had here, and I know, if I ever decide to go to Japan or Brazil or Hong Kong or even Albania, I’ll have a floor to sleep on.
