Speaker A. Can you imagine it — the average American spends more than $ 100 on Valentine’s Day! And men spend almost twice as much on Valentine’s Day as women do! A survey I read shows that more than one-third of men would prefer not receiving a gift. At the same time just less than 20 percent of women feel the same way. The reason for this is partly that the holiday seems just too expensive.

Speaker B. As far as I know on Valentine’s Day no one saves money on flowers. No wonder flowers may cost up to 30 percent more that day! Some people even buy and send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day. The most popular flower is still the rose followed by lilies and violets. The colours of flowers are very important as they speak about your feelings and emotions, but many people just don’t pay attention to that and buy whatever they find nice and suitable.

Speaker C. I was surprised to learn that Valentine cards have a very long history. Some scientists believe that the tradition was probably started by Charles, Duke of Orleans, because the oldest surviving Valentine dates back to him, to the year of 1415. It was a beautiful poem written by the Duke to his wife. However some historians trace the roots of the holiday back to the Roman times and their pagan celebrations or early medieval times.

Speaker D. Do you know, that one billion Valentine cards are sent each year worldwide, making it the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas? I’ve heard Hallmark, a big card producer, even employs research staff to analyze the sales pattern of previous Valentines. They analyze customer interviews and instore observations to find out which cards’ve been a sell-out this or that year and which age group chooses which type of cards and which is the best poem on the card and so on.

Speaker E. BBC reports that India has spoken out against Valentine’s Day calling it “an attack on local culture for commercial purposes”. So I guess they do take it seriously and there’re people not in favor of this holiday. The Catholic Church, for instance, struck St. Valentine’s Day from its official calendar in 1969. There even have been times when Valentine’s Day was close to being forbidden.

Speaker F. The University of Maryland has a team of academic experts educating the media about Valentine’s Day no matter what angle they wish to cover. There I’ve read that many people choose Valentine’s Day for getting married. Can you imagine? The list of celebrities who’ve done this includes Elton John and Meg Ryan. And quite a lot of famous people have been born on that day!

1 Perm’s industry
2 City’s cultural life
3 Natural resource as attraction
4 The greatest achievement
5 Traditionally liberal
6 Beneficial location
7 Where the name comes from
8 Too important to be left alone
A The word “Perm” first appeared in the 12th century in the Primary Chronicle,
the main source describing the early history of the Russian people. The Perm
were listed among the people who paid tribute to the Rus. The origin of the
word “Perm” remains unclear. Most likely, the word came from the Finno-
Ugric languages and meant “far land” or “flat, forested place”. But some local
residents say it may have come from Per, a hero and the main character of
many local legends.
B Novgorodian traders were the first to show an interest in Perm. Starting from
the 15th century, the Muscovite princes included the area in their plans to
create a unified Russian state. During this time the first Russian villages
appeared in the northern part of the region. The first industry to appear in the
area was a salt factory, which developed on the Usolka river in the city of
Solikamsk. Rich salt reserves generated great interest on the part of Russia’s
wealthiest merchants, some of whom bought land there.
C The history of the modern city of Perm starts with the development of the Ural
region by Tsar Peter the Great. Perm became the capital of the region in 1781
when the territorial structure of the country was reformed. A special
commission determined that the best place would be at the crossroads of the
Trans-Siberian Railroad, which runs east-west and the Kazan line, which runs
north-south. This choice resulted in Perm becoming a major trade and
industrial centre. The city quickly grew to become one of the biggest in the
region.
D Perm is generally stable and peaceful, so the shocks of 1917 did not reach it
right away. Neither did they have the same bloody results as in Petrograd.
Perm tried to distance itself from the excesses and did not share the enthusiasm
for change of its neighbours. Residents supported more moderate parties. They
voted for the establishment of a west European style democracy in Russia.
Unfortunately, the city could not stay completely unaffected, as both the White
and the Red armies wanted its factories.
E Perm’s desire for stability and self-control made the region seem like a
“swamp” during the democratic reforms of the 1990s. Unlike other regions,
there were no intense social conflicts or strikes. Nevertheless, Perm was always
among the regions that supported the democratic movement. In the 1999
elections, the party that wanted to continue the reforms won a majority in the
region. So the city got an unofficial status of “the capital of civil society” or
even “the capital of Russian liberalism”.
F During the Second World War many factories were moved to Perm Oblast and
continued to work there after it ended. Chemicals, non-ferrous metallurgy, and
oil refining were the key industries after the war. Other factories produced
aircraft engines, equipment for telephones, ships, bicycles, and cable. Perm
press produces about 70 percent of Russia’s currency and stamped envelopes.
Nowadays several major business companies are located in Perm. The biggest
players of Russian aircraft industry are among them.
G Perm has at least a dozen theatres featuring productions that are attracting
audiences from faraway cities, and even from abroad. The broad esplanade
running from the city’s main square has become the site of almost continuous
international art, theatre and music fairs during the summer. Even the former
prison camp with grim walls outside town was converted into a theater last July
for a production of “Fidelio”, Beethoven’s opera about political repression. The
performance was well-reviewed.

The culture shock of being an international student
For any student, moving away from home can be a bit scary. But I did not expect student life in Scotland to be all that different from my home of the Netherlands. After all, we get the same news and TV shows online. Many students find the northwest climate can affect them a lot. You may find the grayness and dampness, especially during the winter months, difficult to get used to. However, when I moved from Amsterdam to study at the University of Stirling, I began to realise that a few minor issues were catching me off balance. I was suffering
a minor cultural shock.

In my first year, I quickly found out my English was not as good as I had assumed. Most of my roommates were born and raised in Scotland, and I constantly found myself having to ask people to repeat themselves. Their Scottish accents did not help and I was mispronouncing names and places all the time. I also got confused about minor cultural things. Much to my flatmates’ amusement, it took me two Christmases to figure out that mince pies are not actually filled with minced beef.

The linguistic barrier meant that public transport was tricky at first. I found the lack of information about bus prices and how and where to get tickets really surprising. It turned a simple 15-minute journey into a daunting task. Then I had to adjust to a new social life. I was surprised by the campus culture in the UK – in the Netherlands, most universities don’t have one main campus where you can attend university, as well as live and exercise all in the same place. But here, you never have to leave campus if you don’t want to. I had to adapt to everyone being so close to each other all the time.

Parties are different here too. In the Netherlands, the less effort you put into getting ready, the better. I’d normally slip on my trusty Converse shoes, along with some clothes I could get away with wearing to class tomorrow, and wear minimal make-up. But, in my experience, partying is more formal in the UK. Your make-up needs to be flawless and your hair needs to be immaculate. You’ll preferably be wearing a dress and heels, too. I was constantly having to borrow clothes off my friends just to fit in. Parties finish early and everyone just wanders off, whereas in my country that would be the time I’d leave the house.

But it is not all early closing times and strange pastries. Social behaviours may also confuse, surprise or offend you. For example, you may find people appear cold, distant or always in a hurry. Cultures are built on deeply-embedded sets of values, norms, assumptions and beliefs. It can be surprising and sometimes distressing to find that people do not share some of your most deeply held ideas, as most of us take our core values and beliefs for granted and assume they are universally held.

However, I have found lots of pleasant surprises in the UK too – and so have many other international students I know. My friend Agnes was taken aback by how sociable people are. She says she was shocked when complete strangers started talking to her at the bus stop. I, personally, was surprised by how smartly male students in Stirling dress compared to my home country. Culture shock can knock your confidence in the beginning. But you are not alone in taking time to adapt, and soon you start to come to grips with all experiences. Studies suggest that taking a gap year or studying abroad can positively influence your brain to make you more outgoing and open to new ideas.
Looking back, most of the ones I experienced made good stories to tell my friends.

Task 3-9.2.

Task 1.1.

Speaker A. I try to care about our planet. Some people argue that it’s impossible for an individual to affect major changes, but I disagree as there’re many things everyone can do to help our planet. Let’s start with our homes. Encouraging your family to recycle regularly is a good thing to start with. Every glass bottle you recycle saves enough energy to run a TV for an hour, while recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours! It’s not difficult to turn out the lights when you leave a room or use re-useable containers for your lunches.

Speaker В. My name is Walton and I’m from the USA. I’m personally concerned about our environment pollution. I try to protect the environment, to preserve it and leave it clean and undamaged for the next generations who are at risk of not being able to leave their homes due to the high city pollution. Yet now, in my native city (Boston) the smog has increased to such a threatening level that my family and I had to move, because the air was harmful to the health of my 4-year-old son.

Speaker С. In my country, England, there is hardly a part of it that is within its natural state. The typical English countryside, the hills and fields, have all been shaped by generations of cultivation. In fact, taking the planet as a whole there is hardly a part of it that humans have not changed. I fear that by our pollution humans are changing the places where they do not live and where they live. Deserts are becoming hotter, arctic ice is melting and wherever you look you can see the ugly footprint of humanity.

Speaker D. Of course we should care more about our planet water supplies. When you use water wisely, you help the environment. You save water for fish and animals. You help preserve drinking water supplies as well. You save the energy that your water supplier uses to move water to you and the energy your family uses to heat your water. When you use water wisely, you save money as your family pays for the water you use. So if kids start learning to use water wisely today, they will be helping themselves in the future.

Speaker E. My name is Susan and I’m 17 years old. I think the earth is the home we all live in but many people simply don’t care. I get depressed by all those warnings that we hear daily, acid rain, global warming and on and on. It is likely that there will always be some people who litter in towns and in the country, despite fines and knowledge of the environmental consequences. You cannot influence the way other people care for our planet and that makes me very sad.

Speaker F. I suggest we should use all resources in the most efficient way possible. A green home will be a good solution here as it helps to conserve energy as well as water. Waste and pollution will be decreased too. A green home protects the environment by using renewable solar energy. Solar panels on the roof of a home collect sunlight, which is then converted into power to heat the home and run the home equipment. So a green home will save energy as well as money in addition to having other health benefits.

A−7: Let’s start with our homes. Encouraging your family to recycle regularly is a good

         thing to start with.

B−5: I had to move, because the air was harmful to the health of my 4-year-old son.

C−3: I fear that by our pollution humans are changing the places where they do not live

         and where they live.

D−4: Water wisely, you help the environment. You save water for fish and animals. You

help preserve drinking water supplies as well.

E−1: I get depressed by all those warnings that we hear daily, acid rain, global warming

         and on and on.

F−6: So a green home will save energy as well as money in addition to having other health

         benefits.

A. The client is going to London this week. —

I need to fly to London next Monday and I’d like to make reservations for a round trip ticket.

B. The client has chosen an evening flight.- В верно

I’d rather leave at 9 p.m. I have to get to London early in the morning, as early as possible,

C. The client is flying to London for sightseeing.-

It’s a business trip, you know, I might want to see some sights or spend the night at the theater, фраза see some sights — ловушка, герой диалога предполагает, что ему захочется это сделать, но не уверен, поэтому использует модальный глагол might.

D. The ticket price seems okay for the client.- D

That’s ridiculous! It’s too much! Okaaay, if I don’t have any other choices…

E. It’s the shortest possible flight to London.- Not Stated.

What’s the flying time? Not Stated.

F. The client dislikes London airports except for Heathrow.

What’s the destination airport? That’s good news! I don’t expect a lot of traffic jams on my way then, and you can always rent a decent car there. F — Not Stated.

G. The final ticket price is lower than the original one.- G

В конце разговора покупатель не может определиться с датой обратного вылета и просит оставить open date на билете, на что получает ответ but it will make the price jump, то есть цена «подпрыгнет» или увеличится. Well, I don’t mind it,

Task 3-9.1.

Callum: Hello, I’m Callum Robinson and this is Entertainment. Our topic today is films and film festivals. You may have heard of the Venice Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival, glorious occasions with A-list celebrities from the movie world turning out to promote their latest projects. A festival you might not know is the Portobello Film Festival which is currently taking place in Portobello, an area of West London. It’s had its own independent film festival for a number of years and to learn more about it I’ve invited the festival’s director Jonathan Barnett. So, Jonathan, could you tell us about when and how the festival started.

Jonathan Barnett: Well, it started in 1996 because even back in those days there were people making very low budget films often using video equipment and there wasn’t really anywhere for them to show their films so we thought it would be nice to provide a platform for these filmmakers. We had the mad idea at the time of showing every film that was submitted and we also decided not to charge because I suppose at heart we weren’t rabid capitalists.

Callum: So the festival started as a way of giving unknown filmmakers somewhere to show their films. As Jonathan said, to give them a platform. Then I’ve got a question. How many films are being shown and how do you manage to pay for it, for running the festival, I mean?

Jonathan Barnett: This year we’re showing 700 films. The money comes in from funding mostly, we get money from people and organizations like Film London and the Arts Council and we also get different kinds of support from sponsors. So we don’t have to pay for advertising, we don’t have to pay for launch parties, we don’t have to pay for prizes.

Callum: Over the first three weeks of August 700 films are being shown as part of the Portobello Film Festival. What kind of films can be seen? Are they just short student films or does the festival attract big names as well? Here’s the festival’s director Jonathan Barnett.

Jonathan Barnett: The actual films we’re showing are a lot better than anything you’ll see on TV or on multiplexes and it’s everything from student films and we also get stuff from top filmmakers like, for instance, John Malkovich. So I think because we’re a festival that has a reputation for a certain amount of integrity and also being a little bit out on a limb we attract the big names as well as people who are just starting out. The first year of the festival we had Guy Ritchie’s first film which was called the “Hard Case”, which was fantastic, it’s exactly the same as Lock Stock and Snatch but he was kind of formulating his ideas and it was a short film.

Callum: As far as I know, the Portobello Film Festival runs until the 21st of August as well as films there are other arts events, a variety of fantastic concerts, exhibitions and presentations. You want the festival to be more than just for film, don’t you?

Jonathan Barnett: Yes, what we want it to be is, we want it to be a bit like a kind of cross between Glastonbury festival and Edinburgh festival, but for free and set in Portobello Road.

Callum: We also hope it would become a big arts festival — amazing, unforgettable and a good start for young talents!

That’s all from Entertainment this week.

A festival you might not know is the Portobello Film Festival which is currently taking place in Portobello, an area of West London.

Слышим: “You may have heard of the Venice film festival and the Cannes film festival. Glorious occasions with glorious A-list celebrities from the movie world turning out to promote their latest projects. A festival you might not know is the Portobello Film Festival, which is currently taking place in Portobello, an area of West London. It’s had its own independent film festival for a number of years. And to learn more about it, I’ve invited the festival’s director… Could you tell us when and how the festival started?”

Фраза “It’s had its own independent film festival for a number of years” отсекает ответ 3) is running its second season only. Первые два ответа откликаются в предложениях: “Glorious occasions with glorious A-list celebrities” и “A festival you might not know is the Portobello Film Festival”. Второе предложение с “you might not know” подтверждает, что фестиваль действительно “not so fashionable and well-known”. Значит, правильный ответ — 2) not so fashionable and well-known. Это еще раз подтверждает, что ответ 1) does not attract celebrities неверный.

3) sponsors and funds provide good financial support.

6. One characteristic feature of the Portobello Festival is that

1) 700 films are shown each festival season.

9. Speaking about future plans, the festival’s director

1) sounds optimistic about the festival extension.

2) believes the festival should turn to other arts mostly.

3) thinks the festival will be united with Glastonbury or Edinburgh events.

The Portobello Festival differs from festivals in Cannes and Venice as it

    1) does not attract celebrities.

    2) is not so fashionable and well-known.

    3) is running its second season only.

A.

The client is going to London this week.

B.

The client has chosen an evening flight.

C.

The client is flying to London for sightseeing.

D.

The ticket price seems okay for the client.

E.

It’s the shortest possible flight to London.

F.

The client dislikes London airports except for Heathrow.

G.

The final ticket price is lower than the original one.

A.

The client is going to London this week.

I need to fly to London next Monday and I’d like to make reservations for a round trip ticket.

B.

The client has chosen an evening flight.

I’d rather leave at 9 p.m. I have to get to London early in the morning, as early as possible,

C.

The client is flying to London for sightseeing.

It’s a business trip, you know, I might want to see some sights or spend the night at the theater, фраза see some sights — ловушка, герой диалога предполагает, что ему захочеться это сделать, но не уверен, поэтому использует модальный глагол might.

D.

The ticket price seems okay for the client.

That’s ridiculous! It’s too much! Okaaay, if I don’t have any other choices…

E.

It’s the shortest possible flight to London.

What’s the flying time? Not Stated.

F.

The client dislikes London airports except for Heathrow.

What’s the destination airport? That’s good news! I don’t expect a lot of traffic jams on my way then, and you can always rent a decent car there. F — Not Stated.

G.

The final ticket price is lower than the original one.

В конце разговора покупатель не может определиться с датой обратного вылета и просит оставить open date на билете, на что получает ответ but it will make the price jump, то есть цена «подпрыгнет» или увеличится. Well, I don’t mind it,

7. From steam to electricity

A.
The invention of the steam locomotive made a breakthrough in the development of the railway system in the 19th century. Today the technology seems ordinary, but two hundred years ago it was revolutionary. Steam locomotives were fueled by burning coal, wood or oil, to produce steam in a boiler, which drove the engine. Of course, large amounts of water were also needed. In the 20th century, steam engines were gradually replaced with trains fueled by diesel or electricity.

B.
Some long-distance passenger trains have become famous. For example, the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia is the longest railway in the world, covering 9,259 kilometers and 10 time zones. In the United States, the California Zephyr travels between Chicago and San Francisco, and during the 3-day trip, passengers can enjoy amazing views of the Rocky Mountains. The Orient Express between Venice and Istanbul offers old-fashioned service that is luxurious, romantic, and expensive.

C.
Of course, not all trains carry passengers. Many trains are freight trains, transporting goods from one location to another. The busiest freight system in the world is in China. Freight trains are usually much longer than passenger trains. The longest freight train recorded was in Australia with over 682 cars. Freight trains can carry anything — coal, cars, clothing — anything that people need. Refrigeration, which keeps food cold and fresh, revolutionized freight transportation.

D.
In many countries, overnight trains are a good option to air travel. For example, you might leave one city at 11:00 at night, and arrive at your destination at 7:00 the next morning. Typically, you share a cabin with three other people, who you might be travelling with, or who you might not know at all. Your seats become your beds and the price of your ticket includes your bedding. If you want, you can order tea and a snack from the cabin attendant.

E.
Authors have been using trains in literature for as long as trains have been running. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine some stories without a train in them. Even people who have never read Anna Karenina know how the famous novel’s heroine dies at the end. Many American children learn the important lessons of optimism and hard-work reading the classic story The Little Engine that Could. And of course almost everyone on the planet knows about Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter books.

F.
Many countries around the world are investing in high-speed trains. Today’s high-speed railways are amazing. They can go twice as fast as regular trains, and they are designed for passenger comfort with spacious chairs, internet access, and multi-media entertainment. High speed rail makes it possible to move many more people much faster over longer distances. High speed rail also can help the environment because it is more energy efficient and reduces cars on the roads.

G.
In the 19th century, railroad travel became the fastest way to travel long distances overland. It was a great improvement over travelling by horse and wagon, which could take weeks longer than the train. But early trains weren’t comfortable. Seats were hard and the soot from the coal engine made the air very dirty. In addition, the cars were cold in winter and hot in summer because there was no heat or air conditioning. But fortunately, since those early years, train travel has become much more pleasant.

The United Nations sponsors many wonderful programs to help people all over the world, and one of the most famous — and oldest — is UNICEF. The acronym UNICEF is short for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The program was founded in 1946 to provide emergency food and healthcare for millions of children in the countries that had been ruined by World War II. Today UNICEF helps children in developing countries with programs that support human rights, food, healthcare, and education. UNICEF programs emphasize the importance of developing strong communities. In recognition of its work, UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.

UNICEF operates with a budget of over $2.7 billion. The funds are provided by governments of the member nations of the U.N. and also by private groups and individuals. In the United States and Canada, UNICEF is especially well known for its “Trick-or-Treat” program, which began in 1950. Every Halloween, in October, children dress up in magical, fantastic and scary outfits and go door to door in their neighborhoods, asking for candy. Many children also carry with them bright orange “Trick-or-Treat” boxes, and they receive money as well as candy. They get to eat the candy, of course, but the money is given to UNICEF. Over $200 million has been raised in this way — all by children dressed up as witches and ogres and fairy princesses.

UNICEF has offices and centers in over 190 countries, with thousands of staff, interns and volunteers. UNICEF also relies on famous people to help raise awareness for its projects. One of the most famous and popular was the actress Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn had herself been the child of war, having survived World War II in the Netherlands. She credited the United Nations with saving her from starvation at the end of the war. Hepburn believed her work with UNICEF was more important and more meaningful than her career as an actress.

The platypus is one of the most unusual creatures in the animal kingdom. Platypuses have a paddle-shaped tail like a beaver, a furry body like an otter, and webbed feet like a duck. In fact, the first time a platypus was brought from Australia to Britain, people could not believe that it was a real animal.

Platypuses make their homes in the freshwater areas. While they are in the water a lot, they will also waddle onto the riverbanks to dig burrows with their claws. These burrows are tunnels that have rooms or chambers. Platypuses also live under rock ledges, roots, or debris.

Platypuses weather many climate extremes. Their waterproof, thick fur keeps them warm in chilly temperatures, and their big tails store extra fat for energy. Platypuses usually sleep during the day and hunt at night. They hunt for their food in the water where they live.

Electronic assistant: Hello! This is the electronic assistant of the cafe The Best Choice. We are doing a market research, and we would like to offer you new opportunities for special occasions. We kindly ask you to take part in our survey. Please answer six questions. The survey is anonymous, so you don’t have to give your name. Let’s get started.

Electronic assistant: Is there a cafe in your neighbourhood?

Student: (pause 40 seconds) Well, there is one good cafe in a stone throw from my home. It is small buit extremely cute. This cafe is made in French style and it has panoramic windows and fresh flowers everywhere. _

Electronic assistant: Where do you prefer to celebrate your birthday, at home or in a cafe? Explain why?

Student: (pause 40 seconds) If I were to choose where to celebrate my birthday, I would defenetly go for cafe. The reason is that I don»t want to be bothered with cooking and washing dishes after all. Besides, I won»t missan opportunity to take cool photos in a luxuriously designed cafe.

Electronic assistant: If you had a chance to arrange a birthday party in a cafe, what kind of food and drinks would you order?

Student: (pause 40 seconds) First of all, as I have a sweettooth, a birthday cake is of utmost importance. Then there»d definely be some cocktails and champagne. Finally, I am sure if I were to organise the birthday party there won»t be staple food like vegetables and potatoes. It seems to be old fashioned for me.

Electronic assistant: What kind of entertainment would you like to have at your birthday party to make it more exciting?

Student: (pause 40 seconds) First of all, there will be a cotton candy counter, an incredible magic show and a fashionable photo booth. Then I can»t do without music and so I will invite a jazz band.

Electronic assistant: Whom would you like to invite to your birthday party, your family or your friends? Explain why.

Student: (pause 40 seconds) Surely I will invite both my friends and family, because I would like to share the happiest moment in my life with all of them. However, with no doubts there would be 2 different parties because the interesta and as a result the entertainment must be different.

Electronic assistant: What other special occasions (like your graduation party or getting a driver’s licence) would you like to celebrate in a cafe?

Student: (pause 40 seconds) To my mind, getting a Bachelor»s Degree or retirement are occasions that must be celebrated in restaurants and cafes, because they»re the most important milestones of our life and we should do our best to remember this moments forever.

Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your time.

You are going to give a talk about your free time. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

What teenagers enjoy doing in their free time, why

What your favourite pastime is, why

Whether you help your family with household chores if you have free time, why

You have to talk continuously.

I would like to start with the idea that most of the people have enough free time to relax. But the majority of them always complain that they need more and more. I think that you just have to be responsible for a wise usage of your free time. Speaking about me, I’m usually busy doing homework. But I still have enough free time to play with my friends. I would say that I have enough free time to do everything that I’ve planned. I do believe that all other teens prefer to watch a new movie in the cinema and have fun with their friends from school for example they enjoy hanging out in clubs. But my favourite day of the week is Sunday because I always help my parents with household chores such as washing dishes and taking the garbage away. The main reason why I do it is (not mentioning that it’s my responsibility to help my elderly parents) that after fullfiling my duty I go to the pool , meet with my friends and we watch a movie together. In summary, I should say that having a lot of free time is great.

Speaker A

Woman: I would definitely recommend it — you find things on every topic under the sun

there, from ancient Greek sculpture to the Japanese art of bonsai. But if you»re planning to

go, don»t leave it too late
in the day. I went in the afternoon
and it was really crowded,

especially round some of the more popular stands.

Speaker B

Man: They kept the curtain open during all the scene changes, which rather spoiled the

illusion for me. And they did it in modern dress, which I found a bit strange,

especially since it»s supposed to be set in ancient Egypt. But apart from those things,

I really enjoyed it. The female lead was superb; she had a wonderful voice of course,

but she was a good actress too
, which isn»t always the case.

Speaker C

Woman: I only went because David persuaded me into it — he»s a big fan — but it wasn»t

really my cup of tea. Of course, they were fantastically fit and did the most amazing

leaps and twirls, and it was all quite pretty to look at.
The music was nice too, bit I

did get a bit bored. In fact, I have to admit I fell asleep for a while in the second

Speaker D

Man: The Swinton retrospective at the Tate
has really been pulling the crowds
, so

get there early if you want to avoid queuing to get in. The irony of this popularity

would not have been lost on Swinton himself — he struggled for thirty years to

make a living from his work and it was only in the last decade of his life that his

cartoon-like images of daily life caught the public»s imagination.

Speaker E

Woman: Of course, it»s always harder to bring something fresh to the classics —

everyone»s got their own preconceived ideas about the right way it should be done.

But I must say, this production was absolutely fantastic. I was completely

spellbound
from the moment the curtain rose and the final speech
at the end of act

three brought tears to my eyes.

Speaker F

Woman The performance was certainly slick
and the guitarist»s fingers as nimble as

ever, but I have to admit that I found the spectacle of a group of men in their fifties

pumping out songs of teenage rebellion more than a little ridiculous.
This did not

seem to bother the audience, however, who had turned up in thousands to see the

heroes of their youth. Predictably, it was the old hits that went down best, while

songs from the new album met with a lukewarm response.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

Vocabulary

amazing leaps and twirls – удивительные прыжки и повороты

queue – очередь

preconceived ideas — предвзятые идеи

slick — гладкий, блестящий

as nimble as ever – такие же шустрые, как всегда

A5 John is pleased with his working hours.

A6 Tini disapproves of John choosing a teaching career.

A7 Tini thinks she has the right personality for a career in banking.

John: Tini, you’re a student, aren’t you?
Tini: Yeah, I am.
John: Do you like to study? Do you like your student life?
Tini: Of course. You know, I like studying although I’m not that much of a bookworm, like some of my friends who can’t imagine their lives without reading, but yes, Hike studying. I like spending time with my friends, and I just like my student life.
John: Now, soon, you’re going to graduate, correct?
Tini: Yes, fortunately or unfortunately, yes.
John: Well, why would you say fortunately?
Tini: Fortunately in the sense that, you know, it’s about time to get out into the real world and, you know, earn some money. But unfortunately in the sense that all of these precious memories, like you are putting them all behind.
John: Yeah, soon they are going to be over.
Tini: Right, and then you have more problems and responsibilities as soon as you step into the real world, which is understandable. I don’t mind this but no more spring vacation, no more summer vacation, this is tough.
John: Actually, that’s why I’m a teacher. People always ask me, why are you a teacher, John? And I say because of the time off. You get so much time off, and you don’t have to work a 9-5 schedule.
Tini: Yes, that is a very smart choice, I think.
John: Yeah, but you make no money.
Tini: Well, but you know you can be fresher and that’ll keep you young forever.
John: I don’t know about young forever but it does… you do feel energetic when you’re a teacher. I do agree. Well, you know, you can also become a teacher.
Tini: Well, actually, I’ve given it a bit of thought but right now I’m really into the banking industry.
John: Banking?
Tini: Yeah, the financial services industry, and then probably I might like to give it a go.
John: That’s going to be very stressful.
Tini: It is, but you know, I pretty much like the fast- paced lifestyle and I’m quite quick-thinking and well-organ- ised.
John: Good luck with banking then, you keep on with it.
Tini: Thank you. It’s going to be really tough, I know.

Presenter: Our guest today is Chris Nash who is widely recognized as one of the most creative photographers in his field. He has held over 40 exhibitions of his dance photographs worldwide and has worked with world renowned dance companies and choreographers. And my first question is: What inspired you to become a photographer?
Chris Nash: A kind of it came from an odd angle I was studying fine art at college and as part of the course we spent a week in the darkroom. I found it a bit like magic, watching the pictures develop. At the time, I was making a lot of big pieces of sculpture, and because I didn’t have anywhere to store them, I would have to take photographs of them and then destroy the sculptures. This was a bit heartbreaking really, so I took real pride in the images and gradually began to develop a greater interest in photography.
P.: Did you have any formal training?
C.N.: Not really. I spent more and more time in the darkroom. The tutors were the artists making work that was photographic-based. The darkroom technician at the college was great. He was a professional photographer and introduced me to John, the photographer I assisted when I left college. I wanted to do things, and John would tell me what I would need, what equipment, what books to read. I kind ot taught myself, but he was there to help with any questions I had. The best way of learning is doing.
P.: You just said you worked as an assistant; is this a good way into a career?
C.N.: Yes, absolutely! In fact I think it is the best way. When you see an photographer working on the job, you come to realize, get a clear idea of what photography is about. You have to deal with a lot of talented people: models, performers, make-up artists etc. All of them have their particular habits and eccentricities. You need to be able to draw the best out of them and to be really patient. Ideally when you are at college you are taught all the basic techniques, but when you
come out, there is a whole lot of other important stuff to learn.
P.: What was your first camera? Or the first photo you took?
C.N.: A really cheap plastic camera. I had that when I was twelve and then I bought a single lens camera when I got to college. Then I went back to a plastic camera. I saw this exhibition where a photographer had used a really cheap camera called a Diana. It had a cheap plastic lens on it, which made everything go fuzzy and dreamy. I wanted to get the same effect, so I went to a lot of markets, to try and pick up a second-hand camera. I had two which I would carry around with me.
P.: When did you become interested in dance?
C.N.: It was while I was studying in London. At that time the Dance Centre was attached to our college. So I met a lot of dance students and saw a bit of contemporary dance. I thought this would make a great subject for photography. So, I encouraged one of the dance students to go into the studio and let me take some photographs. I was fascinated by the results and sent the pictures into a competition and I won. I won 50 pounds worth of photographic materials. That got the ball rolling. This was about 1979.
P.: Do you go to dance performances of the people you photograph?
C.N.: Yes, but not very often. The way I work is a bit back-to-front. When I take pictures, it’s usually way in advance of the actual piece being created. Working with the dancers I can only imagine what the future performance will be like. And it is interesting to find out if the work I have done corresponds to the real play. So, sometimes I will go and see the premiere. It is important for me to see if the photographs make any sense and if the piece is how it was originally described to me.
P.: What do you enjoy most about your career?
C.N.: With the exhibitions I’ve done, I’ve got to do lots of travelling. I’ve had trips abroad on shoots, which can be a great thing. Also, I have really enjoyed working with dancers and working with creative people. Dancers always have a lot of energy and are always active. When you ask them to do things, all those little directions, they have absolutely no objections. When you work with other people who don’t have that physical training, it can be difficult to work in the same way. I love going to see dance performances, but it’s different when you work with dancers. It’s right there with you and it’s really exciting. That’s what I love.

1. Controlling skies 5. Blocked roads

2. Lack of safety 6. Paid roads

3. Bicycle is faster 7. Improving railways

4. Office at home 8. Buses instead of cars

A. The world’s first public passenger railway was built in Great Britain in 1826 and ran between the industrial north-eastern towns of Stockton and Darlington. After 180 years’ experience the British say that their trains still don’t seem to run efficiently or even safely. On average, about 500 accidents with broken rail tracks happen in the country every year.

B. The British government is promising to give £33.5 billion to modernise the railways before 2010. Another £30 billion is to come from the private sector. The main target is to increase safety and speed. For example, new London-to-Scotland high-speed trains significantly reduce journey times and in 2004 a warning system was installed throughout the country.

C. Statistics show that only 12% of all journeys made in Britain are by public transport. The remaining 88% are made by car. Every year British people spend about two weeks travelling to and from work including nine days in their own cars. But anyone will say this isn’t a quick and easy way to travel. In fact, a journey from London to Manchester frequently takes seven hours. A cyclist could get there quicker.

D. Every year there are about half a million traffic jams in Britain. That is nearly 10,000 a week. There are hundreds of big traffic jams every day. According to the forecast, the number of jams will grow by 20 per cent over the next ten years. Nearly a quarter British people find themselves in a jam every day and 55 per cent at least once a week.

E. Nowadays many British people take their children to school by car. Twenty years ago, nearly one in three primary school children made their own way to school. Now only one child in nine makes their own way. During the school year at 08:50 a. m. one car in five on the roads in any British town is taking children to school. The solution could be special school buses widely used in the USA.

F. Many scientists hope that new technologies allowing more people to work at home may help with traffic problems. Fewer people will work from 9 to 5 and travel to and from work during the rush hour. But only 15% of people now want to spend more time working at home. The workplace is, for many people, a place to meet other people and to talk to them, so they would miss it if they worked from home.
G. In 1903, the Wright brothers made the first aeroplane flight. It only lasted 12 seconds but changed the world forever. A century later, air travel is no longer a miracle, it is part of everyday life. One billion air passengers now fly every year — that’s equivalent to a sixth of the world’s population. To make sure everything runs smoothly, there are special air traffic control centres in each country which watch every aeroplane.

The Courtship of Susan Bell

Mrs. Bell invited Aaron Houston, a famous British artist, to paint her younger daughter’s portrait. Aaron wanted to make a few drawings before he started a portrait. On the Thursday evening the drawing was finished. Not a word had been said because the girls were shy to speak in Aaron’s presence and he had gone on working in silence. “There,” said he, “I don’t think that it will be any better if I go on for another hour. I hope you will like it. There, Miss Susan”, and he sent it across the table with his fingers.

Susan’s face got red, she was embarrassed. She took the drawing and said, “Oh, it’s beautiful”. The superb originality of the drawing captivated her. A young girl was represented sitting at a table in a room filled with fresh air and the soft light of a summer day. The greenery of an old overgrown garden could be seen through the window. In front of her on the white tablecloth there was her book. The eyes of the girl looked out at you, dark grey, mysterious, sad, languorous, yet strangely intent. What was the girl thinking about? Who was the girl thinking about? The drawing was more than a portrait. It fact, the artist tackled a far bigger job than that of reproducing a definite person in portraiture and in performing which he imparted another and bigger content.

Susan’s face revealed her feelings. She turned to her mother and said, “Isn’t it beautifully done, mother?” and then her elder sister and her mother got up to look at it, and both admitted that it was beautifully done but Susan felt there was doubt in her mother’s voice.

“We thank you very much,” said Susan after a long pause.

“Oh, it’s nothing”, said he, not quite liking the word “we”.

On the following day he returned from his work to Saratoga about noon. He had never done this before, and therefore no one expected that he would be seen in the house before the evening. On this occasion, however, he went straight there, and by chance both the widow and her elder daughter were out. Susan was there alone in charge of the house.

He walked in and opened the sitting-room door. There she sat, with her knitting and a book forgotten on the table behind her, and Aaron’s drawing, on her lap. She was looking at it closely as he entered.

“Oh, Mr. Dunn,” she said, getting up and holding the picture behind her dress.

“Miss Susan, I have come here to tell your mother that I must start for New York this afternoon and be there for six weeks, or perhaps, longer.”

“Mother is out,” she said. “I am sorry.”

“Is she?” said Aaron.

“And Hetta too. Dear me! And you will want dinner. I’ll go and see about it.”

Aaron began to swear that he could not possibly eat any dinner.

“But you must have something, Mr. Dunn“ she said.

“Miss Susan,” said he, “I’ve been here nearly two months.”

“Yes, sir,” Susan said, hardly knowing what she was saying.

“I’m going away now, and it seems to be such a long time before I’ll come back.” And then he paused, looking into her eyes, to see what he could read there. She leant against the table; but her eyes were turned to the ground, and he could hardly see them.

“Will you help me?” he said. She was keeping silent. “Miss Susan,” he continued, “I am not very good at saying things like this, but will you marry me? I love you dearly with all my heart. I never saw anyone so beautiful, so nice, so good.” And then he stopped. He didn’t ask for any love in return. He simply declared his feelings, leaning against the door. Susan remained silent. Aaron ran out of the room.

A19 What was unusual about Aaron’s visit on the following day? He came

Bath»s ancient history A. Bath is a world famous city known for its thermal baths, which are a major tourist attraction. The city is situated in the southwest of England, near the country»s west coast and about 150 kilometres from London. Bath is in the area of England that is known as Somerset, a county bordered on the north by the Bristol Channel. B. The baths for which Bath is known were built around the year 60. It was the Romans who established the city as a spa. They did so about 20 years after they arrived in England. They constructed the baths, along with a temple, on a hillside near hot springs. Over the next 300 years, structures would be added to the baths, making them grander. C. Over the years, Bath slowly became an important city. Wealthy people began moving there in the 1500s. In 1767, construction began on the Royal Crescent, a group of buildings that form a semicircle and look out onto a park. The buildings were constructed in the Georgian style. Afterward, more buildings were built in the same style, giving Bath the character it has today. D. Bath is situated in the Avon Valley. The city is built on and surrounded by hills, which have a maximum height of 238 metres. The valley, which is about 18 metres above sea level, runs through the city centre. The River Avon runs through this area, and because it is a low-lying area, the city sometimes suffers from floods during rainy seasons. E. Presently, there are just over 80,000 people living in the city itself. The greater region of Bath, which includes nearby parts of Somerset, has a total population of around 160,000. The majority of people living in Bath are of English birth, with just under 3% of people being from places outside the UK. A resident of Bath is known as a Bathonian. F. As it is located in the southwest of England, Bath generally has winters that are warmer than other parts of the country. Its summers are usually cool and rainy, and the temperature doesn»t go much over 20 Celsius. Average rainfall is 700 millimetres, which is spread out evenly throughout the seasons. Its windiest period is in the winter, while summers tend to have light breezes. G. The city of Bath has five theatres, and performances are put on by both national and international companies. There are also important concerts that take place in Bath, as well as literature and film festivals. One such festival decides who in Bath is that year»s greatest poet, singer or storyteller. These various events attract thousands of people to the city. Ответ: Тексты A В С D Е F G Заголовки

In the autumn of 1900, a team of Greek sponge divers were returning from the coast of Africa. A dangerous storm started, which forced them to take shelter near the small Greek island of Antikythera. While the crew waited for the storm to pass, the captain of the boat sent one of his divers to search the seabed for sponges. The diver, Elias Stadiatis, discovered the remains of a 2,000-year-old shipwreck at the bottom of the sea, 60 metres below. When he returned to the surface, he was so excited about what he»d found that the captain thought he had been affected by too much carbon dioxide. But when the captain himself went down to take a look, he saw that his crewman really had found ancient treasures. He immediately told the Greek authorities, and the sponge divers, with the assistance of the Greek navy, began to recover the wonderful things. In the following months, using only very basic diving equipment, the divers managed to bring to the surface an amazing number of ancient artefacts, including bronze and marble statues, delicate glassware and gold jewellery. All of this had remained undisturbed for nearly two thousand years. The operation only stopped because conditions became too dangerous to continue. One of the items that was discovered was a piece of bronze. It was in such poor condition that no one was sure what it was. One archaeologist suggested that it was some kind of clockwork mechanism, but no one believed him and it was put away for storage in a museum. It was nearly fifty years before anyone else took any interest in the item. In 1951, a British scientist called Derek Price began to investigate the item. He discovered that it contained a complex gear mechanism and suggested that it was used to make calculations about the position of planets. It is regarded as the world»s first example of an analog computer. Today, it is world famous, and is known as «the Antikythera mechanism». Before the discovery of this mechanism, it was believed that no complex clockwork machines had been invented until the 14th century. Scientists continue to investigate just how it was used. The site of the shipwreck continues to fascinate modern archaeologists, who are keen to make further diving expeditions in the area. But diving in dangerous waters at depths of between sixty and seventy metres is expensive and difficult, so there have been only a few expeditions over the last hundred years or so. If it»s difficult now, just think how much harder it was for a team of Greek divers over a hundred years ago. А7 А8 A9 AlO All A12 A13 A14 The storm made the divers stop while on their way back to Africa. Elias Stadiatis was the best diver on the boat. Sailors helped the sponge divers collect the treasures. Some of the divers were injured while diving. One of the discoveries from the shipwreck was ignored for many years. The mechanism changed ideas about the history of clockwork machines. Scientists have stopped studying the Antikythera mechanism. No one has explored the shipwreck site for about a century.

Types of digital cameras 7. Professional uses today 8. An immediate advantage A. Cameras have come a long way since the time of our grandparents. The days of using film cameras are almost gone. Even the digital camera has come far since its beginning. Now there are digital cameras that fit in your pocket, and there are those for use among professional photographers. Even the movie industry has taken to using a kind of digital camera for shooting films. B. Digital cameras perform a wide range of functions. They can zoom in on an object, just like a film camera, but they can also zoom in digitally for an even closer shot. They can make the colours brighter or darker, and they can make the image sharper. They can even make the photo come out in black and white, for a more artistic look. C. One great feature of a digital camera is the ability to delete unwanted photos. As soon as you take a photo, you can view it on the camera screen and decide if you want to keep it. If not, you can erase it from the cameras memory and take another photo. Its better than having the photo developed from film, which takes time and money. D. A digital camera records an image in basically the same way as a film camera. The difference is that, with a film camera, a chemical process occurs to create the image. With a digital camera, the process is electronic. A sensor records the colours and details of an image, which then appear on the cameras screen. E. You can use a digital camera just as you would a film camera. An obvious difference is that with a digital camera, you don»t have to load film. You basically just point and shoot. As with any other camera, though, you have to use the flash in dark places, and you can adjust the lens to take photos from far away or up close. F. You can attach extra lenses to digital cameras to take special pictures, just as you can with a film camera. Unlike film cameras, though, a digital camera also has a cable that you can use to attach it to a computer, to save your images for ing and storing on your computer»s hard drive, or sending to a printer for easy printing. G. The first digital cameras were used in military and scientific settings. This was around the time of their invention in These early cameras weighed about 3 kilograms and took black and white photos. A few years later, digital cameras were used in medical facilities. It wasn»t until the early 1990s that digital cameras were made available to consumers. Ответ: Тексты A В С D Е F G Заголовки

Health and your diet 7. Exercise and health 8. Work and health B. Staying healthy is just as important as getting help when you do fall ill. Doctors recommend getting vaccinated against certain diseases at a young age, or perhaps when there is a flu epidemic and many people suffer from and spread the disease. «Prevention is better than cure», as the old saying goes. It is easier to get ill than it is to get better, so take care. Healthy food is essential for the body and the mind. You are what you eat, so if you eat junk food or drink a lot of sugary drinks, think what it is doing to your body. Another old saying is «an apple a day keeps the doctor away», pointing out the benefits of eating simple, healthy food. C. A good work-out can keep you fit and healthy, but too much can cause problems. There are two forms of exercise, resistant and aerobic, and both have their advantages, but doctors recommend combining both forms for maximum benefit. It can be difficult to find time to go to the gym, because of work or family obligations, but just a few minutes a week can work wonders. D. It is not so easy to combine healthy living with your everyday routine, and sometimes a person»s job can present problems. For example, if you work long hours, you can become over-tired and your body gets run down. Other jobs involve a lot of pressure, which can cause stress, leading to various illnesses. As always, moderation and care are the best defence against the threat of illness. E. Some groups of people are especially vulnerable to illness. Babies, for example, need a clean environment as their bodies cannot yet deal with certain germs or bacteria, and can catch all sorts of diseases very easily. They need a lot of sleep and a special diet, too, to ensure healthy growth. Each new family should get the best advice they can from an expert on how to raise a healthy child. F. Both the young and the elderly are high-risk groups. Age brings wisdom, but it can also bring health problems. As your body grows older, it naturally grows weaker, and special care must be taken at this stage in life. Perhaps some gentle exercise or a change in diet becomes necessary, on the advice of your medical consultant. G. If you do become ill, you must act quickly. You could make an appointment with your doctor, or if it is more serious, visit the local hospital. Your doctor might refer you to a specialist if the problem requires expert attention, or your hospital visit might turn into a longer stay if you need an operation. The important thing is — seek help! Ответ: Тексты A В С D Е F G Заголовки

This was finally done in 2002, and to this day 12th June is known as «Russia Day». Because it is a national holiday, most banks, schools and public offices are closed. Public transport still runs, but with reduced timetables in most places. The Russian flag is flown and the two-headed eagle, the symbol of the Russian Federation, is displayed everywhere. As you would expect, the state puts on a magnificent display, and around the country various official events take place to celebrate the day. In the capital, Moscow, there»s a big parade through the streets, and sporting events often take place outside the Kremlin. The President of Russia addresses the nation and takes the opportunity to present medals and awards to important and famous people in the arts and sciences. Perhaps because it is such a new national holiday, some people are a little confused how it should be celebrated. Musical events and firework displays are common across the country. Some people take advantage of the day to celebrate their cultural heritage by dressing in traditional clothes and demonstrating the traditional dances of the various regions. A more modern way of celebrating may include attending pop concerts or going for a picnic in the countryside. Environmentalists have sometimes used the day to draw attention to green issues while still expressing their national pride. Some Russian communities abroad also celebrate the day. For example, in 2012 a formal dinner in Chicago, USA was attended by various VIPs representing both America and Russia, and included a speech given by the Russian Ambassador to the US. Russian classical music was performed and the dinner featured traditional Russian dishes, while soldiers from both countries were honoured. This celebrated Russia Day and helped to bring Russians and Americans closer together. Despite this variety of focus, the true meaning of the day is clear. No matter how people celebrate on 12th June, they are celebrating the relationship of a country to its past, present, and future, and — above all — its people. No other country celebrates a National Day on 12th June. In 2002, «Russia Day» was on a Saturday. Buses and trains operate as usual in most places on 12th June. On 12th June, the Russian President gives a speech at midday. There are only a few firework displays on 12th June. Some people in other countries also celebrate Russia Day. The dinner in 2012 helped make some people become better friends. A14 People celebrated Russia Day more in the past than they do now.

1. Family problems 5. Other achievements 2. First signs of recognition 6. His life is remembered 3. A giant of science 7. Proved right in the end 4. Beaten by a competitor 8. A comfortable beginning A. Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist and inventor who developed the Periodic Law and a periodic table of chemical elements. This allowed him to predict the properties of elements that had not yet been discovered at the time. He is internationally recognised as one of the greats of the world of science and scientific research. B. Dmitri Mendeleev was born in 1834 in the village of Verkhnie Aremzyani near the Siberian city of Tobolsk. He was the youngest child in a very large family. Although the exact number is not known, he had between eleven and sixteen brothers and sisters. In his early years, the family was quite well-off, as Mendeleev»s father was a teacher of fine arts, philosophy and politics. C. The Mendeleev family fortunes changed when Dmitri s father became blind and had to give up teaching. His wife was now forced to work to support the family, and she re-opened an old glass factory which belonged to her family. But later, the factory was destroyed in a fire and, because of poverty, the family had to move to Saint Petersburg. D. Dmitri Mendeleev began his scientific career teaching chemistry, and by 1864 he had been made a professor at Saint Petersburg State University. He soon began to be noticed by chemists around the world, and it wasn»t long before he had turned Saint Petersburg into an international centre of excellence in the field of chemistry research. E. Mendeleev was not the first to work on a periodic table of elements. Another scientist, Lothar Meyer from Germany, published an almost identical table a few months after Mendeleev. However, only Mendeleev»s table contained predictions of undiscovered elements. Many scientists didn»t believe his predictions, but two of the missing elements were later discovered, establishing without doubt the accuracy of his table. F. Apart from his work in the field of chemistry research, Mendeleev was a founder member of the Russian Chemical Society. He also helped establish the first oil refinery in Russia and was, at one time, director of the Russian Bureau of Weights and Measures. Finally, Mendeleev is also credited with having introduced the metric system into Russia. G. Mendeleev died at the age of 72 in His life is commemorated with a museum in his honour at Saint Petersburg State University. A street in Saint Petersburg is named after him, as well as a crater on the far side of the moon. The Russian Academy of Sciences annually awards the Mendeleev Gold Medal for achievements in chemical science and technology. Ответ: Тексты A В С D Е F G Заголовки

The Maya are a group of people living in Central America and southern Mexico, whose history dates back an incredible 4,000 years. The height of their civilisation is sometimes known as the «Classic period». This lasted from about 300 to 900AD, and then suddenly ended. Archaeologists today still ask, «Why did this happen?» There are many possible explanations for the end of the Classic Maya civilisation, but no-one knows for sure exactly what happened. One possibility is that some groups of foreigners invaded and destroyed some of the most important Maya cities. However, most archaeologists and historians who have studied this subject think this explanation is unlikely. Another possibility involves the expansion of the civilisation during the 700s. Some buildings from that period remain unfinished. Why? The suggestion is that poor Maya citizens were forced to carry out the hard building work. Because they were badly treated, they fought back. This would explain why the buildings were never completed. However, scientific research has shown that the buildings weren»t actually very difficult to build. What»s more, other civilisations that experienced problems like these did not just disappear. A third possibility involves the collapse of trade. Some archaeologists believe that the Maya were, closely connected to the city of Teotihuacan by trade. This great city ruled central Mexico, and its collapse in 750AD changed trade routes. However, it has been discovered that the Maya»s connection with this city was strong around 500AD. This means that by the time Teotihuacan fell, the Maya were already independent of the city»s influence. One of the most likely explanations is a change in the weather, with not enough rain leading to an extremely bad drought. Scientists have been able to work out rainfall amounts at the time from soil samples. It appears that the area suffered from a «mega-drought» and the severe lack of water was enough to starve the Maya of food. Critics of this idea say that only the northern regions have been studied and the Maya civilisation was stronger in the south. Also, certain Maya cities in the north survived until 900AD or even later, but this is possibly because they were located closer to the sea and could survive on fish. Whatever its cause, the end of the Maya Classic period did not bring a complete end to its people. Today, there are still millions of them living in the area, speaking one or more of the 21 Mayan languages still in existence. A7 А8 А9 А10 All А12 A13 А14 The «Classic period» lasted for more than 4,000 years. Archaeologists often have meetings with historians to discuss the Maya civilisation. Not all of the buildings the Maya started building in the 700s were finished. Maya buildings were usually very expensive to build. Around 500AD, the city of Teotihuacan ruled over the Maya civilisation. Scientists have no idea how much rain fell during the Classic period. Some Maya cities continued after the end of the Classic period. Maya people today all speak the same language.
