An English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher is responsible for instructing non-native English speaking students ranging from children to adults. As an ESL teacher you assist students in learning the English language, focusing on areas such as speaking, reading and writing. Also, you teach students about the different cultures of English-speaking populations, like those in the United States. However, before you can start teaching non-native English speaking students, you must know how to become an ESL teacher.

  1. Image titled Be a Good Leader at School Step 1

    1

Apply to a university or college. A 4-year degree from an accredited university or college is required to become an ESL teacher. Most schools, both small and large, house English, education, or teacher training programs. To make your future job applications as strong as possible, it is wise to select a school that has a strong reputation in the field you are entering.[1]

  2. Image titled Make Money as a College Student Step 1

    2

Select a major. Earn a bachelor’s degree in education, teaching or English. The degree takes 4 to 5 years to complete, depending on the program and college you choose. Which major you choose will necessarily impact how you choose to package yourself as a job candidate.[2]

    • Many colleges and universities have joint-degree programs that allow you to focus on specific aspects of two majors while earning one bachelor’s degree. These types of degree granting programs are ideal for ESL teachers.[3]

    3

Take core courses. If you’re pursuing a 4-year degree in teaching or education, then you will likely take core courses related to pedagogy, syllabus development, how to devise testing and assessment techniques, etc. You also must complete general education classes, such as math and political science and elective classes.[4]

    • It may be wise to take some general history courses. Knowing the history of the countries of ESL learners may make teaching them English a little easier.[5]
  4. Image titled Read French Step 11

    4

Take foreign language courses. While learning a foreign language is not required to become an ESL teacher, it is strongly recommended. Which language you choose to take is up to you. However, you should be aware that you will have an easier time finding a job if you learn languages that are in demand.[6]

    • For example, many European nations, especially in northern and western Europe, maintain a strong knowledge of the English language among their general populations. This will make learning a language like German, Dutch, or Norwegian less marketable than learning a language like Chinese, Spanish, or French.
    • Also, keep in mind that many developing nations that house multiple language groups utilize European languages as official languages in the country. So, it will do you little good to learn an obscure language from Senegal or Haiti, when you can just as easily provide instruction in French to people from these countries.
  5. Image titled Befriend a Professor Step 5

    5

Complete a teaching internship. Most education or teaching-based majors require you to complete an internship to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. The internship is usually at a school or learning center and will be arranged by your department. Typically, internships are offered for 1 or 2 semesters and are carried out in the student’s junior or senior year.

    • Internships often do not pay regular wages, but they may offer college credit. They may also offer a small stipend.

  1. Image titled Get Good Grades in Chemistry Step 2

    1

Know why you’d want a Master’s Degree. A graduate degree takes 2 to 3 years to complete. Although the minimum requirement to work is 4-year degree, some employers may prefer hiring an ESL teacher with a graduate degree. Having this degree will not only increase your chances of being hired, but may also bump you up into a higher pay grade once employed.[7]

  2. Image titled Masteral Degree

    2

Apply for a master’s program. Select a program that is well-respected in the field of education or teacher training. As is the case with most graduate programs, the strength of a department lies in the teaching and research strengths of its faculty members. So, be sure to research departmental webpages to know who you will be working with.[8]

    • Most graduate programs require students to select a faculty adviser. If this is the case with the program you select, it is wise to contact those faculty members directly to see if they will work with you and support your candidacy. You will also want to mention which faculty members you would like to work with in your application essay.
  3. Image titled Get Paid to Go to College Step 4

    3

Complete your coursework. Certain courses, like basic methodology and literature review courses will be required. You should select the remaining courses that fulfill your degree requirements based on the faculty member overseeing the course and the topic of the course, as they pertain to your specialty.[9]

  4. Image titled 563418 22

    4

Network. Graduate schools are great places to engage with other respected-faculty members and other students, which can help you find a job later on. While completing your coursework, take every opportunity to attend conferences, workshops and seminars.[10]

    • Depending on the size of and available funding in your department, you may be able to get money to attend conferences, workshops and seminars.
  5. Image titled Become a Teacher if You Already Have a 4 Year Degree Step 13

    5

Write your thesis. A major component of completing your graduate degree is researching and writing your master’s thesis. This document represents your contribution to ongoing scholarly debates in your area of expertise. Your adviser in the department should be able to help you identify a topic and find resources for writing your thesis.

  6. Image titled Get Paid to Go to College Step 5

    6

Acquire letters of recommendation. As you are nearing the end of your degree program, you will want to ask three faculty members, who know you and your work well, for letters of recommendation. These letters will be essential parts of your application for jobs down the line.

Join ESL organizations. These organizations allow you to network with other ESL professionals and learn more about the career. More importantly, they will allow you to meet people who may be able to provide you with job opportunities, references, or advice on finding a job. Some of these groups are:

    • TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a global organization that holds annual conventions, maintains online forums and blogs, and provides access to TESOL resource centers.
    • AAAL (The American Association for Applied Linguistics) is the American branch of IAAL and offers access to peer-reviewed journals, holds annual conferences, and grants student travel awards.
    • IAWE (The International Association of Worldwide Englishes) is another global group that brings ESL teachers together, runs a journal, and hold various conferences throughout the year.
    • ILTA (The International Language Testing Association) is an organization that runs newsletters, holds online discussions, and hosts annual conferences for people interested in developing testing to gauge how individuals learn languages.
  2. Image titled Get a Teaching Certificate in Texas Step 6

    2

Earn a TESOL certificate. You will need a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate to work as an ESL teacher. The certificate provides you with additional ESL training and is offered online or through community colleges and language institutes.[12]

  3. Image titled 563418 8

    3

Pass the state teaching examination. States require all teachers to obtain a license to teach at public schools and adult education programs run by the government. Qualifying to take the exam for the license usually requires obtaining a bachelor’s degree and finishing a teaching training program.[13]

  4. Image titled Motivate Students Step 1

    4

Work as an ESL teacher. You are now ready to get your career as an ESL teacher started. You can obtain employment through networking, help from college advisers or online employment websites.

    • You may find that work for ESL teachers is more readily available outside of the United States. If you plan to work abroad, you will want to apply for or renew your passport and look into getting a visa, if one is needed for where you are going.
    • There are a number of websites and online resources for ESL teachers looking to work abroad. Some of those sites are:
    • Dave’s ESL Cafe provides a list of jobs available around the globe for people looking to teach ESL abroad.
    • Teacher Port gives a listing of ESL opportunities across Asia and the Middle East.
    • Go Abroad is a website that provides a number of suggestions for finding employment abroad to fund traveling abroad. There are many ESL opportunities on this site as well.
    • There are also plenty of opportunities to work as an ESL teacher domestically as well. Some websites that provide opportunities to to teach ESL in the United States are:
    • ESL 101 is a searchable database of ESL teaching jobs that allows the user to look for opportunities by country or region.
    • The TESOL website maintains a job listing database that can help you find an ESL job in the U.S.
    • Remember, ESL goes by a number of different acronyms (EFL, TEFL, ESOL, EAL), so be sure to search for all the associated acronyms when looking for employment. This will expand your job pool quite a bit.
    • University and college departmental webpages often maintain links to relevant job search sites. So be sure to scour English, teacher-training, and education departmental websites.
    • Many of the teaching opportunities for ESL teachers are found in public schools across the U.S. As such, you will want to look at state government and local school district webpages as well to see if there are any ESL job openings in your area.

  • Question

I have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Can I become an English teacher?

    Donagan

Most public schools want to hire people with bachelor’s degrees (or higher) in teaching. Private schools may observe different criteria.

  • Question

I studied English language for four years, then did a one year postgraduate diploma in education.I also have a masters in English. I have been teaching for 10 years. Am I qualified to teach in Australia?

    Community Answer

You most likely are! It would be easier to judge your qualification if you could specify your country of origin. However, ESL stands for English Second Language teacher, meaning you would have to be able to speak the country’s first language as well. In Australia you would be a regular English teacher then, unless you are teaching Indigenous students speaking different Aboriginal languages.

Teaching English nowadays is considerably different from English teaching model a few decades ago.

In the past, foreign language teachers hardly traveled to the country of origin and were hardly ever exposed to the cultural aspects or had no opportunity to communicate with native speakers and update their knowledge. Everything was digged out from books, which used to bore students to death.

Presently, teaching English (or any other language) is a rewarding experience for both teachers and students. If you search to teach English abroad, you will see many ESL offers in foreign countries. So, hurry up and grab this opportunity to update yourself, broaden your horizon and gain comprehensive experience.

So, what are the perks you get? There are plenty of them:

  • Opportunities working abroad. It is immensely interesting, not designed for whimperers though, since it requires a lot of adjustments. Your comfort zone shrinks. Or sometimes expands, too, who knows!
  • Free travels. Basically, you are getting paid to travel! Why bother waiting the whole year for 2-weeks vacation, if you can simply be on a paid vacation the whole year!
  • You practice your English. Constantly. Everywhere. Your English gets updated. Your skills improve.
  • You start understanding different levels of educational background and start adjusting your teaching methods accordingly. This is not just: read the text and answer the questions, as you used to do with your students in your home country. This is live communication with the people who don’t speak your language!!
  • You have no choice but to learn another language. Free. Most of the times school or training center offer free classes of the language of the country of origin. Besides, students are very excited if you use a few words in their language. You become popular. You become a star in your own eyes.
  • Students appreciate you. They learn better, because you are an interesting object for them to explore. They listen to you, they copy you, which is a great challenge, because you carry the responsibility of being a positive, and only positive example for them to follow.

Did I want to become a school teacher when I was a university student? No. But being a foreign ESL teacher changed my perception, and gave me the happiest experiences in my life.

We are passionate about teaching English but if you needed any more reasons to take a TEFL Course and become a certified ESL Teacher then check out these 8 benefits of being an English teacher:

Summers Off

This is a major plus for teachers EVERYWHERE! You’ve worked hard all year putting in countless ‘extra hours’ and you deserve some time off in order to recharge your batteries. While other working professionals may think you just kick around beside the pool all summer, ESL teachers often keep quite busy working at camps, studying the language of their new host country, working as au pairs, or finally taking the trips they’ve saved up for all year. While it may not all be fun and games, there usually are at least a few weeks during the summer months to kick back and soak up some rays on the beach.

Flexible Schedule

Do you dread getting out of bed in the morning? Well let me tell you, as an ESL teacher, your schedule can be whatever you make it! If you think about it, working 20 hours a week in Spain (which can earn you a decent salary) can easily be attained by working just in the afternoon M-F or M-Th, if you’re feeling particularly driven and take more intensive hours. New teachers are often pleasantly surprised with the flexibility of their job options and hours.

Student Diversity

As an ESL teacher, there’s always an opportunity to have students from all walks of life. You may find yourself teaching a VP at Coca-Cola in the morning, children’s classes in the afternoon, and academy classes in the evening. The variety of students throughout your day will help your job from feeling stale and mundane.

Job Location

If you’re looking to broaden your horizons geographically, this is a fabulous opportunity to do so! Since English is the language that dominates the international business world, there are students everywhere looking for a certified English teacher. You could explore Seoul in South Korea, Chile in South America, or enjoy the sun and siestas in Spain! The options are endless and many jobs will offer advice and assistance with legal processes and housing.

Exposure to New Cultures

It’s one thing to visit a country and experience the culture but it’s quite another to immerse yourself in it for a period of time. Nothing will ever compare to spending ‘Noche Buena’ (Christmas Eve) stuffing your face with endless streams of homemade tapas while old Tío Antonio tells you tales of times past. Completely throwing yourself into another culture is unbelievably enriching and actually teaches you to appreciate your own even more!

International Certification

Many academies will tell you that English teachers are a dime a dozen, however, they would be hard-pressed to say the same about quality internationally certified ESL teachers. Because international certification calls for stricter standards in their programs, teachers who complete TEFL courses with this certification are usually preferred over their peers who don’t have it. Our teachers are internationally certified by IATQuO.

More autonomy with lesson plans/creativity

Traditional teachers are usually required to follow a specific curriculum and aren’t allowed much room for their own creativity. As an ESL teacher, this can vary greatly. While some academies may require you to follow specific materials, the way you implement them is wholly dependent on you which allows for more freedom to be as creative as you like as long as you are still meeting the goals set by your academy/student.

Easy to transition into from any career

Here at TtMadrid we get new students every month from all walks of life. Some are looking for the opportunity to try something new while others are interested in a complete change of careers. Teaching involves so many transferrable skills that people often realize that they have a natural ability for it soon after they begin the course. Furthermore, teaching helps fine-tune many skills such as, managing groups, and building strong communication and organizational skills. This will help to set you apart from other applicants making you a more competitive candidate.

Oscar Wilde once said, «Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes». This holds true for everyone starting out in a new career, and ESL teachers are no exception. But one thing is accepting we’ll make mistakes as we go and chalk it up to a lack of experience, and another is completely ignoring the worst kind of mistakes you could make.

Since anyone can learn from their mistakes, then we can certainly learn from the five worst mistakes beginner ESL teachers make.

1. Taking up all of the talking time

In an ESL class, what is the most common reason students are enrolled? They want to SPEAK English! And what happens when the teacher speaks most of the time?

They don’t have enough chances to actually practice their speaking skills. Those who are new to ESL teaching often make this very crucial mistake: They take up too much of the talking time, either because they feel uncomfortable around silence or long pauses, or because they are

over-enthusiastic to share their knowledge. So clearly, hogging most of the talking time is out of the question.

But, how to find the right balance between student talking time and teacher talking time?

As a general rule of thumb, students should speak for 70% of the class time, while teachers speak for the remaining 30%. These percentages could be tweaked in cases where students are absolute beginners , or at the other end of the spectrum, very advanced learners in need of intensive speaking practice . This means that in most cases, your participation should be limited to giving instructions and explaining essential points, but above all to eliciting response from students and facilitating all types of speaking activities.

2. Ignoring boundaries between teacher and students

ESL teachers should be friendly and strive to bond with students in order to achieve the best learning outcomes. But there’s a line between being friendly and being a friend. A teacher is meant to be an authority figure, one that is most definitely not on equal terms with students. This is a very common mistake in young teachers, especially because they might be the same age as their students. It’s all right to share some personal things and talk about family, pets, interests or hobbies.

But you must never let it get too personal. Any personal information shared must be supplied to give students context when they are learning something new. It is not meant to be shared so you may be accepted by students.

This is when the lines become blurred and students get confused. You lose all authority and any effective classroom management is severely compromised.

Be on friendly terms, talk about your dog or what you did last weekend, but make sure students feel there is a boundary that can’t be crossed.

3. Poor or inconsistent classroom management

This is one of the mistakes that is often made due to a lack of experience. Classroom management is not an exact science; it’s not like teaching the past simple tense. Each group of student is different and rules must be set as a group.

The problem stems from the fact that new teachers may not have a clearly defined teaching style. So, they either become too strict or too lax. There are plenty of articles you can read on effective classroom management; you may agree with some of the techniques, you may disagree with others and choose to implement your own. For example, you may choose to forego stickers as a means of rewarding students, and choose another method.

It’s not about being stricter, but rather being consistent. There’s nothing worse for a group of students than empty promises or weak threats. Once you define how you’ll manage your class, stick to it!

4. Forgetting cultural differences

Some teachers are so focused on teaching things about the English culture, they completely ignore their students’. Some gestures ESL teachers commonly use in the classroom, like the gesture for OK, may be very rude in other cultures. In some countries, students may be used to lecturing, and may not react positively when you propose a game. This is a mistake ESL teachers make above all in foreign countries where the culture is very different from Western culture, like Arabic or Oriental cultures.

Learn about their customs, especially greetings, and use this information to create a positive learning environment.

5. Not gathering enough information on students’ backgrounds and needs

How many beginner ESL teachers start a lesson with a new group and don’t even find out where they’ve studied English before, how long, and with which results?

What if you have a student who has studied English countless times, off and on, over the last 20 years, but is still at an intermediate level? It doesn’t matter if you obtain this information from your department head or from the students themselves; this is essential information to have if you want your students to advance, to make progress in their English language skills.

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, for mistakes will surely be made. There are valuable lessons to be learned from each and every one. Start by avoiding the ones listed above, and you’ll start your teaching career off on the right foot.

Being an ESL student — English as a second language — can be a painful experience. Many of us who have been ESL students know what it is like to get pulled out of class in front of everyone, so you can learn to master the verbs and retrain your tongue to twist differently from what your parents taught you. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes.
‘It takes a lot for any student,’ Whaley explains, ‘especially for a student who is learning English as their new language , to feel confident enough to say , ‘I do not know, but I want to know’

But First, a Moment of Self-reflection…

As with any career, teaching English isn’t for everyone. Before investing your time and money in this endeavor, have a long think about whether this is something you really want to do. Here are the most important questions to ask yourself:

Do I have the qualities of a great ESL teacher?

Here are some of the top skills you’ll need to excel in this profession:

    • You need to possess confidence and adaptability. Some of this will be learned on the job, but before you get started, you’ll want to have the self-assuredness to stand in front of a group of people and provide them with dynamic English lessons.
    • You need to be highly organized and detail-oriented. ESL lessons aren’t going to plan themselves!
    • You need to know your stuff. Be sure that you’re on top of all the latest materials, trends and changes in the English-teaching world to create engaging and practical classes.
    • You need to know the ins and outs of English grammar. Being a native English speaker isn’t enough. Do you know the difference between a direct and indirect object pronoun? Can you provide examples of countable and uncountable nouns off the top of your head? If not, make sure to study up on your English grammar so that you can answer your students’ questions.
    • You may need to acquire an officially recognized teaching certificate such as a TEFL. (For more info on this, keep reading.)

Once you know if you can be an ESL teacher, you’ll next have to consider if it’s something you want to do. So, the next step is to ask yourself if you’re ready for this adventure. Specifically:

    Am I ready to…

…open myself to completely new cultures?

…meet new and interesting people from around the world?

…potentially spend a long time away from home?

    …work a meaningful and life-changing job?

Have you answered yes to these questions?

    Great!

Now that we’ve reflected, let’s dive in.

Teaching English as a Second Language: 4 Steps to Start Your Journey

Step 1: Choose Which Type of English Teaching Is Right for You

It’s important to define your English teaching goals before moving forward.

Here are some questions that you need to be asking yourself, as well as my key pointers and experiences, picked up while working in several ESL positions with learners of all ages.

Do I want to teach in my home country or teach abroad?

This is the big question. Are you hungry for adventure? Or looking to make a big impact in your local community?

Teaching ESL at home can be an incredibly rewarding experience, as you’re often teaching refugees and immigrants. This means you get to meet people who now call your home, their home! Not to mention, you can stay close to friends and family, may not have to move and won’t experience such a profound lifestyle adjustment.

On the other hand, if you decide to teach abroad, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a completely new culture while having a potentially life-changing experience abroad. This comes with opportunities to travel and meet friends, as well as possibly develop skills in another language.

The international job market can be easier to break into. But on the other hand, it doesn’t always pay as well, and you may need to search for additional sources of income such as teaching online.

Do I want to work with adults or with children?

While both groups of students have their pros and cons, deciding on a classroom demographic can make or break your ESL experience. Have a think about how you’d deal with a classroom full of boisterous children or a room full of serious adult learners who expect top-quality teaching class after class.

Teaching adults can be a deeply satisfying job, as you’ll be able to share life experiences and form a meaningful connection with your students. Plus, classroom management is far simpler when teaching adult learners, as they’re dedicated and committed learners.

However, the classroom environment can at times feel overly serious, with none of the fun and games of an elementary school.

Teaching children can also be rewarding. It can be encouraging to watch children develop their language skills at a rapid pace, as their brain plasticity aids their language development. Plus, their excitement and joy can make for a positive, high-energy classroom environment.

On the other hand, if you plan on working with kids, remember that you’ll need to polish up on your behavior management as well as grammar rules!

Children will also be far more dependent on their teacher, and you may need to infuse your classes with stimulating additional resources such as music, videos or games. And you’ll have to get ready to deal with demanding parents, too!

Do I want to teach ESL short-term or do I want it to be my career?

While it may be difficult, it’s entirely possible to make a career of teaching English as a second language. This is something that can really only be decided once you’ve begun your English teaching journey and start to get a feel for it. Keep this in the back of your mind as you progress.

Teaching ESL for a year or two can be a great way to take a step back if you find yourself a bit lost in life and earn some extra money while you decide what’s next. It’s also a great way to earn extra cash while traveling and meeting new people. Plus, if you’re only in it for the short-term, you may be able to avoid having to go through a certification course.

There’s also a benefit to positioning yourself as someone who’s in it for the long haul. The TEFL world is expected to grow rapidly in the near future, and there won’t be any shortage of work as English is in high demand around the world.

If you think about English teaching as a long-term career right from the get-go, you’ll have more incentive to grow your teaching skills and build your resume with courses and certifications, which will make you a highly desirable candidate for jobs.

While this is a lot of work up front, it’ll eventually help you find higher-paying positions with more stability—and plus, it’ll make you a more effective teacher.

If you’ve gotten this far, the next step is to think about whether or not you’ll need a teaching certification. Have a look below to assess which certificate would best suit your needs.

    Step 2: Research Teaching Qualifications

TEFL, TESOL, TEAL… To a newbie, it can seem like there are an infinite number of different acronyms to refer to various styles of English teaching and their associated certifications.

While in every option you’ll be teaching the English language to non-native speakers, for the purpose of acquiring a job it may be important to differentiate between all these acronyms.

    Let’s break it down!

    Different types of teaching qualifications:

    • TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is the one to go for if you’re looking to work abroad. A TEFL certification usually takes 120 hours, and it can be taken as a fully online course, a classroom course or a combination. Because of the emphasis on travel, TEFL is usually the preferred choice for gap year students, travelers and adventurers. Note: TEFL is generally used as a catch-all term for all English teaching related jobs.
    • TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) is generally the recommended choice for those who want to teach English in a native English-speaking country, for example to immigrants or refugees.
    • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is very similar to a TEFL and may be heard being used interchangeably. However, a TESOL is generally recommended for those hoping to teach English in their home country, although a teacher holding a TESOL certificate may also be permitted to teach internationally. Think of this one as a sort of combination of the TESL and TEFL.
    • TEAL (Teaching English as an Additional Language) is a new acronym currently in usage, just to add a little more confusion to the mix! TEAL emerged as a response to the acronym TESL. The problem with TESL is that many English learners aren’t in fact learning English as their second language, but rather, their third, fourth or even fifth! So, if you see a TEAL certification course you can think of it as similar to a TESL.
    • CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is sort of like a fancy TEFL. It’s a highly regarded certificate in the industry and will take about a month to complete. While it’s more expensive than the other options, it opens up a world of opportunities (literally) for the keen teacher. As you can guess from its name, this one’s best suited to teachers interested in working with adult students.
    • DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a higher-level form of accreditation which is only open to teachers who’ve taught for a period of one year. It’s recommended for those looking to turn their passion for ESL into a career.

If you’re overwhelmed, don’t worry. Many job postings will simply ask for a teaching certificate and will be happy with whichever one you have. In the meantime, you can take a look at YouTube to see some real teachers talk about their experiences and what worked best for them.

Psst…I’ll let you in on a little secret: some jobs don’t even ask for a teaching certificate at all. In fact, my first TEFL teaching job didn’t require a certificate! However, this is fairly uncommon. These days most English schools and academies will require their teachers to be accredited with one of the previously mentioned certificates.

With that seemingly never-ending list of acronyms at your disposal, it’s time to think about which qualification is right for you and where to study it.

You may need to consider factors such as cost, time, where you want to teach and if you prefer online or in-classroom training.

Where to find more information on teaching certification programs:

Once you’re ready to look for a program, here are a few resources to get you started.

    • TEFl.net has a great search function, which shows you the various institutions offering these degrees in your country.
    • GoAbroad is a great resource for not only travel but also for finding accredited institutions to undertake your ESL studies.
    • Cambridge English has incredibly useful information regarding the higher-level qualifications as well as fantastic resources related to the ESL world as a whole.
    • OnTESOL is a top-notch resource for comprehensive training and information on the TESOL certification.

You can also take some time to research your local colleges and training centers to see if there are any available courses. Whatever path you choose, always be sure to read the reviews of the institution. If possible, try to make contact with some former students to ask about their opinions of the course.

Step 3: Check the Job Market

    Work, work, work, work, work.

That’s what we’re here for! But finding the right gig can be a tough, well, gig. It’s all about using the right tools.

Here are some of the most popular job boards to check out:

    • Dave’s ESL Cafe is considered the gold standard blog in the English teaching world. There are daily updated job postings as well as endless materials, resources and information at your disposal. (Don’t be put off by the outdated web design.)
    • ESLbase is where I came across my first job teaching in Spain. It’s very comprehensive and also includes a handy scam guide.
    • TEFL.com allows you to search for jobs within very specific parameters, meaning you can find that ideal gig if you already have some specifics in mind, such as location or length of contract.
    • /r/TEFL, the TEFL forum on Reddit, is another option, where you can get crowd-sourced info and potential leads for teaching positions.

    Step 4: Research Target Schools

Like any industry, it’s important to do you due diligence. There are certainly cases of dodgy dealings, scams and teachers having horrible experiences with their ESL journey. Luckily there are a few steps to overcome this.

First, when you’ve identified a target school, look at its online presence. What does the website look like? Does it have any sort of social media presence? Informing yourself about the school won’t only help you avoid scams, it’ll also make you a more attractive job candidate.

Next, talk to as many people as you can. This includes your potential boss and co-workers. But also, if you can, contact some ex-teachers to ask about their experiences.

Forums can be a great place to get in touch with others who’ve taught in a similar region, program or even school. Facebook pages such as this internationally-oriented one are a great way to approach the job hunt with the added bonus of being able to read comments posted on the various opportunities, often by current or ex-teachers. If you can find a specific Facebook page or forum for your target city, that’s even better.

Some websites are designed to help job candidates research potential employers. For example, the TEFL blacklist on Reddit is a helpful resource to read about past negative experiences and potential places to avoid. Workplace review sites such as Glassdoor may also be helpful when searching for further information.

If we were to include a step five, it’d be: “Get ready for the exciting adventure of a lifetime.” As long as you’ve done all your research and prepared accordingly, teaching English as a second language can be a highly rewarding career choice. So be thorough, ask questions and enjoy every minute!

Teaching English as a Second Language is a high-demand subject of instruction that continues to experience growth in schools across the country. As children from foreign countries continue to immigrate to the United States and enroll in schools here, the number of students whose native language is not English continues to grow. Thus, many schools have English Language Learners (ELL) programs, also known as English as a Second Language (ESL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).As the primary spoken language in a country with a rich history of immigration and cultural diversity, English and its mastery are an important part of educational development. ESL is offered for people of all ages, though it is not part of the standard public school curriculum as it is not essential to all students.

ESL is a supplementary, comprehensive English language program for students trying to learn the language to better function in American society. Though ESL is supplementary, ESL teachers may still be employed by the public school system. Many schools, especially in urban areas, have programs in which students set aside part of their normal school day to study the English language in a small group with the close supervision of an ESL teacher. Other ESL teachers may be employed by private institutes to offer English tutoring to speakers of other languages.

    ESL Teacher Salary

ESL teachers can expect to make have a similar salary to most other teachers in their location, subject and with a similar amount of experience. Generally speaking, the longer you work as a teacher the more your salary will grow. Learn about specific ESL teacher salary offerings, updated regularly via the career and jobs community at Glassdoor.com. Also important to consider is the fact that teachers receive an annual salary based on nine months of in-classroom work during the school year. Not to say that teachers are not still hard at work during holidays and the summer break, but they can certainly pursue other income earning opportunities during those periods as well.

    Bilingual Education

Like ESL, Bilingual Education is not a mandated part of the curriculum, yet many schools offer it to accommodate the influx of culturally diverse children. Most often found in urban areas, Bilingual Education seeks to help students whose native language is not English keep up with subjects such as Math and Science, which can easily be lost in translation without assistance. Bilingual Education exists in many forms, including Transitional Bilingual Education, Two-Way or Dual Language Immersion, and Late-Exit or Developmental Bilingual Education. In these forms, a student will be assisted with non-language subjects so that they can maintain the achievement level of native speakers while learning to speak English. Bilingual classes will often be taught by bilingual teachers, or will have a translator to assist.

    Teaching English Abroad

For many new and inexperienced teachers, teaching English abroad is a great way to gain teaching experience, travel and be immersed in a new culture. The requirements to teach ESL abroad vary by country, but typically require at least a Bachelor’s degree and an ESL teaching qualification, such as a TEFL certificate.

A TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate prepares educators for teaching English in countries where English is not the native language and few English immersion opportunities exist for students. The University of Toronto offers an online TEFL certification course, that is self-paced and can be earned from the comfort of home.
