My Family’s Hobbies

My name is Adrianna and I’m 14 years old. My family is not very big. It’s just me, my parents and the tortoise named George.

All the members have their own hobbies in our house. Even George has a hobby — to eat and to sleep. My hobby is dancing and knitting. I regularly attend the dance class and watch step-by-step tutorials for knitting.

My mum’s hobby is cooking. She even runs her own blog.

My dad’s hobby is cycling. He loves spending time outside especially if the weather is fine. Last year he even participated in road cycle racing.

However, we also have a family type hobby. During each holiday we make a plan to go somewhere new and to explore the city sights. For example, last summer apart from going to the seaside, we visited two new cities — Irkutsk and Angarsk. We have relatives living there, so it was rather convenient for us to arrange our stay in the city. I’m glad that my parents love travelling as much as me. This New Year we plan to spend at my uncle’s place in Rostov-on-Don. We’ve been there before, but we don’t mind visiting it again.

Another collective hobby is to buy souvenirs from these cities. For example, in Irkutsk we bought some ethnic finery. As for Rostov, we have already plenty of objects from there, mainly magnets and ceramic plates.

It’s a shame George has to stay at home. Luckily, our neighbor Valentina feeds him, when we are away.

I like both languages, however they are absolutely different. English is more popular among the tourists, but Spanish is a more melodic language. Many people agree that hobbies make our lives bright and interesting. It is really cool to do what you want to do, to create something that other people can admire. There are so many different hobbies and every person is free to choose the one he is interested in. Some people like collecting things, others like sport, playing musical instruments, making something, cooking, watching films and so on. A. Hobbies provide work-free and responsibility-free time in your schedule. This can be especially useful for people who feel stressed by all that they have to do and need to recharge their batteries. For some of us it may be difficult to give ourselves permission to just sit and relax. Having a hobby, however, can provide a break and help people feel that they’re not just ‘sitting around’ but are using their free time for something productive.

B. Are there things you enjoyed as a child that you might still enjoy as an adult? Maybe you had a fantastic record collection, loved to make clothes for your dolls or were always out on your bike. Those are all things you could pick up again as an adult that would make great hobbies. Or there may be hobbies in your home right now that you started but have recently forgotten about. Maybe it’s time to finish that crochet project or pick up the guitar again.

C. If you’re adding a new thing into your life, you have to take time and focus away from something else. The good news is that most of us have a lot of time we’re not using well, either because we’re spending a lot of time online or watching TV or just wasting time we could be spending on our hobbies. See if you can spend a half hour or so every other day to explore your interest. This way it would be best in case you find that hobby isn’t for you after all.

D. Of course, everyone is different and your personality does play a role in what sorts of hobbies you’ll like. If you don’t have a lot of patience you might feel that knitting is too much for you, but exploring quick sewing projects might be a better choice. Maybe you really like being with friends, so you need to take a class or have an interest that you can do with a group. If you travel a lot, something portable or that you can do anywhere is helpful.

E. One study found that those who engage in physical leisure activities for at least 20 minutes once a week are less likely to have a fatigue. Other research found that enjoyable activities performed during leisure time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, and body mass index, and feelings of better physical function. Such activities were also associated with higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression.

F. When you look for material or equipment for your hobby, you are likely to find people who have the same hobby as you. You may be surprised to know how serious some people are about their hobbies and therefore would have great knowledge of their chosen pastime. Instead of meeting people from your work or college or those whom you have grown apart with, it is a great way to meet people with whom you have something in common.

G. For those who aren’t very stressed and may actually be understimulated, hobbies provide a nice source of eustress, the healthy kind of stress that we all need to remain feeling happy about life. If the rest of your life is somewhat dull or uninspiring, hobbies can provide meaning and fun, and can break up a boring schedule, without feeling like work. In other words, hobbies can provide just the right amount of challenge.

A. Birds are distinguished from all other animals by their feathers. Some types of birds live alone most of the time. Other types are more social. They may sleep, fly, and nest in groups called flocks. Birds use different sounds to communicate with one another. For example, some baby chicks stop moving when their mother produces a danger call. They may also sing to announce that a certain patch of land belongs to them. Many types eat insects. Some water birds catch fish. Many other types eat plant material.

B. Birds are found almost everywhere on Earth. There are more than 10,000 types of birds. All birds have similar features. The loss of a complete bird species may be inevitable because they are too sensitive to rapid changes. Birds living on small islands, or in desert or mountainous regions, can be vulnerable to slight changes in climate, while even minor disruptions of forest habitats can affect the breeding habits and survival of others. In some regions, it is the hunting of birds, for sport or to trade their pelts, that is the greatest threat.

C. Birds have spread throughout all parts of Earth because of their ability to fly. They live in a great variety of habitats, including fields, forests, grasslands, deserts, marshes, islands, and the open ocean. The size of an area and the diversity of the habitats help determine the number of species found in a given area. Many birds migrate, or fly long distances between their winter and summer homes. For example, many European birds travel to Africa for the winter. This helps them find enough food year-round.

D. Every bird when it is seen for the first time brings a thrill of discovery. The spring migration is a fresh wonder every year. The surprise and delight of coming across a rarity and the difficulty of keeping it in view long enough to be sure of what it is help to make bird-watching an endless fascination. Birdwatching is a hobby that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. In bird clubs the membership ranges in age from young children to grandparents. Bird-watching can combine healthy outdoor activity with the pursuit of beauty and knowledge.

E. Some birds never move far from where they were born whereas others migrate and can travel huge distances in the process. Birds migrate from one summer season to the other. Although they take a lot of risk when they migrate, for many of them it significantly improves their chances of survival and allows them to raise more offspring in another region. Birds migrate to move from areas of low or decreasing resources to areas of high or increasing resources.

F. Birds and their eggs have been sources of food for humans since their origin and still are in most societies. With the rise of agriculture, birds became important to farmers. In their constant search for food, wild birds eat huge numbers of insects, weed seeds, and rodents. Insects, weeds, and rodents cut down the amount of food the farmer can harvest from field, garden, and orchard. Many people keep birds as pets. Small finches and parrots are especially popular. Zoological parks are a source of recreation for millions of people each year.

G. Migration is often annual. It is closely linked with the cyclic pattern of the seasons. It is most evident among birds, which have a highly efficient means of traveling swiftly over long distances. The migration of most birds is a yearly cycle. Not all birds migrate. Permanent residents do not migrate. They are able to find adequate supplies of food year-round. Short-distance migrants move only a short distance. Medium-distance migrants cover distances that span from one to several states. There are also long-distance migrants.

Presenter: With us in the studio today we have Steven Roberts, a world-recognized expert in teaching foreign languages. Good afternoon, Steven.

Steven Roberts: Good afternoon.

Presenter: Steven, everybody wants to speak at least one foreign language. You are constantly in search of new effective ways of teaching a foreign language. What are the most modern ways of improving one’s language skills independently?

Steven Roberts: There are many methods indeed, but the thing I am presently researching is using films as a teacher. Many people feel like watching the original version of a foreign movie they liked. What I offer is a unique educational programme accompanied by the original film in the original language with original subtitles. Our programme is run entirely in a foreign language and instead of classics it introduces slang expressions, new vocabulary, modern grammar, listening comprehension practice as well as comments by native speakers to the audience.

Presenter: That sounds really innovative! Can you please tell us how this idea crossed your mind?

Steven Roberts: Well, when you start communicating with native speakers in a foreign language, you soon decide you are fluent and you have almost accomplished your goal of true bilingualism. However, as soon as you watch a movie in a foreign language, you feel lost. Films are difficult to understand precisely because they are so real world, at least from a linguistic perspective. This may make watching original films very frustrating even for advanced speakers of any language, but the fact remains that there is probably no better source of linguistic input than a good film, if, paradoxically, you could just understand what is being said.

Presenter: It seems to me though, not every learner may find this programme appropriate.

Steven Roberts: True. Movies are a good tool for fluent students. They are ideal for those language learners who fall into the linguistic zone of frustrated fluency discussed earlier. They are designed for upper level learners for the simple reason that they will be most effective as learning tools if you can already understand the language well enough to generally hear where one word ends and another begins. For lower level students, like pre-intermediate or elementary, I would advise to watch films, but not authentic, of course.

Presenter: If a person cannot take part in your programme, but still wants to try using films in their studies, what could you recommend?

Steven Roberts: Find a group of like-minded people and start a film club! The goals of such a club can be to help maintain your language proficiency and to upgrade it as well to give you a chance to enjoy original movies! In 2002 I developed a methodology called “Foreign Languages through Films and Media” which is a copyright and can be got in bookstores or via Internet and used for your club’s shows. Apart from this inexpensive book and some DVDs you will not need anything — well, of course you will need a place where to meet, watch films and discuss them.

A. This is a full-length (ninety minutes) cartoon, which is entertaining for both adults and children over six. C. The young woman is shown in a “shepherdess” hat and white dress, recalling a classical chiton. The background landscape, common in such paintings, seems to indicate the heroine’s closeness to nature, to the ordinary joys of life. The painter’s colour range  — at times as translucent as porcelain, at others muted like mother -of- pearl  — is based upon subtle plays of gray and green, light blue and pink.

D. In this picture one is struck by the artist’s absolute mastery in portraying natural details, whether the dry, sandy soil of the forest, the clear stream of water in the foreground, the yellow bark and fluffy needles of the pines, or the sense of a bright, clear, calm summer day. The artist managed to create an image familiar to anyone who has seen a Russian forest.

E. Have a good time on the most lively and exciting island in the Caribbean. Relax under a palm tree on the white sandy beaches. Swim in the clear, blue sea. Listen to the bands playing Calypso music. Or get really adventurous and go scuba diving for sunken treasure on the sea bed. Join in the many cultural celebrations we offer, for example the sugar harvest festival.

F. This event is considered the greatest attraction for visitors to the Isle of Man. No definite date can be given, but it is normally held between 5th and 15th July. The Pageant begins at about 8 p.m. First we are given a glimpse of village life in Celtic times. Then suddenly Viking long ships appear and then there are scenes of war. Then Celts and Vikings unite, and the Manx nation is born. The actual Pageant is followed by a grand torchlight procession and firework display.

G. Do you like Latin American dancing? Do you want to dance like you see in the films and on the stage? Do you want to feel the rhythm of the music in your body and in your soul? Do you want to meet other people who have a love for the same music as you? If you have answered “Yes” to any of these questions, join our Latin dance classes on Thursday night between seven and ten. All are welcome.

A. C. It is Junior Baseball Magazine’s mission to provide information that enhances the youth baseball experience for the entire family. The player improves his skills and is more successful. The family enjoys the activity more and shares this precious time in their life. Junior Baseball emphasizes good sportsmanship, safety, physical fitness and wholesome family values.

D. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison like industrial, nuclear and chemical waste. The Mediterranean Sea is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following it. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas. Every ten minutes one species of animal, plant or insect dies out forever.

E. Lots of people all over the world enjoy collecting stamps. Stamps are like little pictures. Very often they show the flowers or the trees which grow in this or

F. “Friend” is the title of my favourite magazine. It consists of 70 pages, with lots of colourful and bright pictures and provides interesting and useful information for people who love animals. The magazine includes numerous articles devoted to various topics connected with domestic animals, ways to take care of them, pet food, animal health and many other topics crucial for any animal lover.

G. People are beginning to realize that environmental problems are not just somebody else’s. Many people join and support various international organizations and green parties. What could be more important than human life? Polluted air, poisoned water, wastelands, noise, smoke – all these influence not only nature but people as well. Everything should be done to improve ecological conditions on our planet.

Speaker A. I go to a keep fit class in a local gym. They have classes both in the mornings and in the afternoons so there is always something I can go to. I try to choose classes with Janine. Some of the other instructors get impatient when you don’t do the exercises properly but Janine doesn’t. The only problem is that I’ve recently moved house. I work hard all week and there is always something to do in the house at weekends. I just can’t find a spare minute for anything else!

Speaker D. I love cycling and I used to dream of being an Olympic cycling champion. I joined a club and trained really hard. Now, though, I just enjoy cycling through the forest near my house. I always take my camera and some binoculars with me because I’m a keen bird watcher. That’s why I cycle alone. I love socializing but, on my bike, I need to be quiet so I don’t frighten the birds.

I go Nordic walking every day. I used to go with my neighbour and we had a nice chat as we walked. She was never very keen, though, and she’s given up now. I love it. I can go whenever I like and the sticks weren’t expensive. I had a few lessons when I first bought them because you have to hold them correctly if you want to get the maximum benefit from them.

Speaker F. I started jogging a few months ago. I wanted to run 3km every day but I’m quite lazy and I often find excuses not to go, even though I could find the time if I really wanted to. Одно из нововведений на ЕГЭ-2022 по английскому языку — новый формат эссе (задание 40). Теперь его нужно написать на основе таблицы или диаграммы. Разбираемся в структуре эссе, чтобы заработать на экзамене максимальный балл.

Новое задание 40 «Развёрнутое письменное высказывание с элементами рассуждения на основе таблицы/диаграммы» очень похоже на эссе прошлых лет. Критерии оценивания остались прежними, цель — всё те же 14 баллов:

Во главе всех критериев стоит РКЗ, 0 баллов по этому пункту обнуляет всю работу. В отличие от экзаменов предыдущих лет теперь намного сложнее получить 0 баллов за РКЗ, если будет написано более 180 слов и все аспекты будут освещены.

Все пункты плана нового задания 40 прописаны в контрольно-измерительном материале, то есть в самом задании под таблицей или диаграммой.

Вступление должно соответствовать предложенной теме проектной работы. Во вступлении нужно написать:

Участник экзамена выполняет проектную работу на указанную тему, он нашёл статистические данные по теме, и его цель — проанализировать их, выразив свою точку зрения.

Перефразирование не требуется в критерии РКЗ, но нужно помнить про критерий «Лексическое оформление текста», где оценивается именно соответствие высокому уровню сложности задания.

Конечно, мне нравится проводить свободное время со своими друзьями. Мы говорим на различные темы (политика, преподаватели, девочки). Мы обсуждаем фильмы, книги, телевизионные программы. В хорошую погоду нам нравится быть на открытом воздухе. Мы находим хорошее место где-нибудь в лесу. Мы разводим костер, печем картофель и нам очень весело. Когда погода плоха, мои друзья приходят ко мне. Мы хорошо проводим время вместе.

Hobbies In My Life

Hobby is an activity that you like doing. Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of people don’t have hobbies for different reasons. We work too much, spend too much time in offices and traffic jams. But even in our fast paced world it is very important to find time for things you like as they give you relaxation and positive emotions.

Many people agree that hobbies make our lives bright and interesting. It is really cool to do what you want to do, to create something that other people can admire. There are so many different hobbies and every person is free to choose the one he is interested in. Some people like collecting things, others like sport, playing musical instruments, making something, cooking, watching films and so on.

I have several hobbies. Firstly, I like playing tennis. Sport is always good for your health so my friends and I go to the tennis court twice a week. I can’t say that I have a great success in this, but I really like this game, it makes me feel very excited. Secondly, I am fond of handmade things. We do this together with my mother – she is really good at this! We make wonderful toys which we can give to our friends and relatives for special occasions. And one more hobby I have is collecting postcards, this is very interesting as it gives me an opportunity to get postcards from all over the world, write letters to people from different countries and know about their language and culture.

To my mind every person should have a hobby as it makes you feel relaxed, brings you good emotions and gives you a chance to meet interesting and dedicated people.

Хобби – это то, чем мы любим заниматься. К сожалению, сегодня у многих людей по разным причинам нет хобби. Мы слишком много работаем, проводим слишком много времени в офисах и пробках. Но даже в динамичном мире очень важно найти время для любимых занятий, потому что они помогают расслабиться и приносят положительные эмоции.

Многие люди согласятся, что хобби делают нашу жизнь яркой и интересной. Это действительно здорово делать то, что тебе нравится, создавать то, чем другие могут восхищаться. Существует большое количество хобби – каждый может выбрать себе то, что ему интересно. Некоторые любят коллекционировать что-то, другие любят спорт, играть на музыкальных инструментах, мастерить что-то, готовить, смотреть фильмы и т.д.

У меня несколько хобби. Во-первых, я люблю играть в теннис. Спорт всегда полезен для здоровья, поэтому мы с друзьями ходим на теннисный корт два раза в неделю. Не могу сказать, что я добилась больших успехов, но мне нравится эта игра, она очень захватывающая. Во-вторых, я люблю делать вещи своими руками. Мы занимаемся этим вместе с мамой – она действительно умеет это делать! Мы делаем красивые игрушки, которые дарим друзьям и родственникам на разные праздники. И еще я люблю собирать открытки, это очень интересно и дает мне возможность получать открытки со всего мира, писать письма людям из разных стран и узнавать об их языке и культуре.

Я считаю, что у каждого человека должно быть хобби, потому что это расслабляет, приносит положительные эмоции и дает шанс встретиться с интересным людьми, посвященными своему делу.
