In recent years the number of environmental problems has increased greatly. One of the most dangerous problems for our planet is global warming which means that most climates all over the world are changing and getting warmer. It happens because we burn too much petrol resources, such as oil and coal, and the Earth heats up. This process can cause melting of the polar ice and the sea level rising in the future. If the climate changes there will be floods, heavy storms or severe droughts in different areas of the world. Cutting down on exhaust fumes from vehicles could help solve this serious problem.

Our planet is overpopulated, that’s why we are using up our natural resources – they are not endless. So the scientists have started looking for some alternate forms of energy such as water, wind, sunlight and even tides. These resources are clean, natural and unlimited. I’m glad that modern automobile industries make hybrids which use electric or solar energy instead of petrol. It would definitely help protect our environment from pollution.

There are different kinds of environmental pollution: air pollution, water pollution, land pollution. Sadly, not all human beings realize or admit that we are the ones who cause these problems and we should be the first to stop them and protect our environment. Because of the industrial revolution the air is polluted with awful chemicals; seas and oceans are poisoned with oil spills. Many rare species of flora and fauna are threatened with extinction.

We should be proud to live on our wonderful planet and understand that the consequences of pollution might be terrible and affect us and our children later. We should start recycling things made of glass, paper, plastic and aluminium. We should stop smoking and plant as many trees as we can because they can give us more oxygen. We need to drive less and use public transport in order to reduce fuel burning. We are responsible for the situation.

Reunion

The last time I saw my father was in Grand Central Station. I was going from my grandmother’s in the Adirondacks to a cottage on the Cape that my mother had rented, and I wrote my father that I would be in New York between trains for an hour and a half, and asked if we could have lunch together. His secretary wrote to say that he would meet me at the information booth at noon, and at twelve o’clock sharp I saw him coming through the crowd.

He was a stranger to me — my mother divorced him three years ago and I hadn’t been with him since — but as soon as I saw him I felt that he was my father, my flesh and blood, my future and my doom. I knew that when I was grown I would be something like him; I would have to plan my campaigns within his limitations. He was a big, good-looking man, and I was terribly happy to see him again.

He struck me on the back and shook my hand. «Hi, Charlie,» he said. «Hi, boy. I’d like to take you up to my club, but it’s in the Sixties, and if you have to catch an early train I guess we’d better get something to eat around here.» He put his arm around me, and I smelled my father the way my mother sniffs a rose. It was a rich compound of whiskey, after-shave lotion, shoe polish, woollens, and the rankness of a mature male. I hoped that someone would see us together. I wished that we could be photographed. I wanted some record of our having been together.

We went out of the station and up a side street to a restaurant. It was still early, and the place was empty. The bartender was quarrelling with a delivery boy, and there was one very old waiter in a red coat down by the kitchen door. We sat down, and my father hailed the waiter in a loud voice. «Kellner!» he shouted. «Garcon! You!» His boisterousness in the empty restaurant seemed out of place. «Could we have a little service here!» he shouted. Then he clapped his hands. This caught the waiter’s attention, and he shuffled over to our table.

«Were you clapping your hands at me?» he asked.

«Calm down, calm down,» my father said. «It isn’t too much to ask of you — if it wouldn’t be too much above and beyond the call of duty, we would like a couple of Beefeater Gibsons.»

«I don’t like to be clapped at,» the waiter said.

«I should have brought my whistle,» my father said. «I have a whistle that is audible only to the ears of old waiters. Now, take out your .little pad and your little pencil and see if you can get this straight: two Beefeater Gibsons. Repeat after me: two Beefeater Gibsons.»

«I think you’d better go somewhere else,» the waiter said quietly. «That,» said my father, «is one of the most brilliant suggestions I have ever heard. Come on, Charlie.»

I followed my father out of that restaurant into another. He was not so boisterous this time. Our drinks came, and he cross-questioned me about the baseball season. He then struck the edge of his empty glass with his knife and began shouting again. «Garcon! You! Could we trouble you to bring us two more of the same.» «How old is the boy?» the waiter asked. «That,» my father said, «is none of your business.»

«I’m sorry, sir,» the waiter said, «but I won’t serve the boy another drink.» «Well, I have some news for you,» my father said. «I have some very interesting news for you. This doesn’t happen to be the only restaurant in New York. They’ve opened another on the corner. Come on, Charlie.»

He paid the bill, and I followed him out of that restaurant into another …

1. The Best Way of Learning
2. Key Factor in Learning
3. Linguistic Interference
4. Universal Language

5. Online Learning
6. Language Extinction
7. Learning by Imitation
8. Sign Language

A. Young children have a genetic ability to learn language. They come into the world as eager learning machines, and language acquisition is a major aspect of this learning. How children actually learn language is not entirely clear, however. Most linguists believe that they do it primarily by listening to and trying to communicate with adult speakers. Initially, this means that they copy the way adults use words and grammar.

B. Learning a second or third language is easier in early childhood than later. It is particularly important to learn correct pronunciation as young as possible. At any age, learning by constant contact with native speakers in their own society is the quickest and the most effective method. It is superior to taking foreign language classes because it forces you to concentrate on it all of the time.

C. Learning a second language can be affected by the patterns of the first language. There can be some blending of phonemes. For instance, most Americans who learn French in high school or college pronounce French words with a distinctive American accent. Grammar can also be affected. English speakers who learn both French and Spanish sometimes combine grammatical rules of both when speaking either of them.

D. Until just a few years ago, language study was limited to the classroom or personal tutor, or home study by book. In the last few decades technology has given us a much needed audio option — first vinyl records, then cassettes and CDs. Now technology has given us a new format — the Internet. Options to learn a language by Internet are still limited but the potential is not.

E. What is important when learning a language? If you have the desire and persistence, time is the only factor that you may have to work with. How much time you can devote to learning will play a role in how quickly you can learn the language. Just remember how exciting it will be and how rewarding you will feel at the accomplishment.

F. Rather than have businessmen, diplomats, scientists and tourists from every country learning all the major languages that they want to learn or need to learn, Esperantists would have everyone just learn one second language — Esperanto. Then everyone could communicate with everyone, everywhere. The major ‘national’ languages could keep their special characteristics for anyone who wanted to learn them. This is the essence of the ‘Esperanto Movement’.

G. More than half of the world’s 7,000 languages are expected to die out by the end of the century, often taking with them irreplaceable knowledge about the natural world. When a species dies out, sometimes fossils can be found, remains uncovered. But when a human language disappears, there’s rarely any key left behind. Each loss becomes a linguistic black hole, where an entire way of knowing the world disappears.

A constitution may be defined as the system of fundamental principles according to A ____________. A good example of a written constitution is the Constitution of the United States, formed in 1787.

The Constitution itself is rather short, it contains only 7 articles. And it was obvious in 1787 C ____________. So the 5th article lays down the procedure for amendment. The Constitution was finally ratified and came into force on March 4, 1789. When the Constitution was adopted, Americans were dissatisfied D ____________. It also recognized slavery and did not establish universal suffrage.

That summer an army of crickets started a war with my father. They picked a fight the minute they invaded our cellar. Dad didn’t care for bugs much more than Mamma, but he could tolerate a few spiders and assorted creepy crawlers living in the basement. Every farm house had them. A part of rustic living, and something you needed to put up with if you wanted the simple life.

He told Mamma: ‘Now that we’re living out here, you can’t be jerking your head and swallowing your gum over what’s plain natural, Ellen.’ But she was a city girl through and through and had no ears when it came to defending vermin. She said a cricket was just a noisy cockroach, just a dumb horny bug that wouldn’t shut up. No way could she sleep with all that chirping going on! Then to prove her point she wouldn’t go to bed. She drank coffee and smoked my father’s cigarettes and she paced between the couch and the TV. Next morning she threatened to pack up and leave, so Dad drove to the hardware store and hurried back. He squirted poison from a jug with a spray nozzle. He sprayed the basement and all around the foundation of the house. When he had finished, he told us that was the end of it.

But what he should have said was: ‘This is the beginning’. For the next fourteen days Mamma kept finding dead crickets in the clean laundry. She’d shake out a towel or a sheet and a dead black cricket would roll across the linoleum. Sometimes the cat would corner one, and swat it around like he was playing hockey, then carry it away in his mouth. Dad said swallowing a few dead crickets wouldn’t hurt as long as the cat didn’t eat too many.

Soon live crickets started showing up in the kitchen and bathroom. Mamma freaked because she thought they were the dead crickets come back to haunt, but Dad said they were definitely a new batch, probably coming up on the pipes. He fetched his jug of poison and sprayed beneath the sink and behind the toilet and all along the baseboard until the whole house smelled of poison, and then he sprayed the cellar again, and then he went outside and sprayed all around the foundation leaving a foot-wide moat of poison.

For a couple of weeks we went back to finding dead crickets in the laundry. Dad told us to keep a sharp look out. He suggested that we’d all be better off to hide as many as we could from Mamma. I fed a few dozen to the cat who I didn’t like because he scratched and bit for no reason. I hoped the poison might kill him so we could get a puppy. Once in a while we found a dead cricket in the bathroom or beneath the kitchen sink. A couple of weeks later, when both live and dead crickets kept turning up, Dad emptied the cellar of junk. He borrowed Uncle Burt’s pickup and hauled a load to the dump. Then he burned a lot of bundled newspapers and magazines which he said the crickets had turned into nests.

He stood over that fire with a rake in one hand and a garden hose in the other. He wouldn’t leave it even when Mamma sent me out to fetch him for supper. He wouldn’t leave the fire, and she wouldn’t put supper on the table. Both my brothers were crying. Finally she went out and got him herself. And while we ate, the wind lifted some embers onto the wood pile. The only gasoline was in the lawn mower fuel tank but that was enough to create an explosion big enough to reach the house. Once the roof caught, there wasn’t much anyone could do.

After the fire trucks left, I made the mistake of volunteering to stay behind while Mamma took the others to Aunt Gail’s. I helped Dad and Uncle Burt and two men I’d never seen before carry things out of the house and stack them by the road. In the morning we’d come back in Burt’s truck and haul everything away. We worked into the night and we didn’t talk much, hardly a word about anything that mattered, and Dad didn’t offer any plan that he might have for us now. Uncle Burt passed a bottle around, but I shook my head when it came to me. I kicked and picked through the mess, dumb struck at how little there was to salvage, while all around the roar of crickets magnified our silence.

1. It is necessary to take care of your pet’s health if it has problems.
2. Having two pets can be more enjoyable than having one.
3. Giving an unwanted pet a home is an opportunity to do something kind.
4. Each and every pet has an interesting and unique personality.
5. Choosing the right pet is a very important decision.
6. A pet often loves its owner and can be like a best friend.
7. Pets need something to play with, just like people do.

ответ

A – 5
B – 4
C – 2
D – 1
E – 7
F – 3

Speaker A: We’ve had our dog, Fido, for two years now. My parents asked me which animal I’d like, and I said a dog. A dog was a good choice for us because we’ve got a big house and a fenced-in garden where he can play, and we all take turns walking him. Dogs need space and exercise. People who’ve got a small flat and not a lot of free time to spend with their pet should probably get a fish instead!

Speaker B: Our cats, Leo, Tabs and Boo, certainly keep us entertained round the house. They love to play and sleep and they certainly perk up at mealtimes. But they have their own characters. Leo is super friendly and loves to sit on your lap. Tabs always runs away when you try to pick her up. And Boo is unpredictable – sometimes he loves you, and sometimes he doesn’t! I guess they’re like people in a way – no two are alike!

Speaker С: I love having an aquarium. I’ve got two fish in it now. They don’t really have personalities, you know, although they get excited when I toss flakes of food in their tank. I started off with just one fish, then after six months, I decided it would be fun to get a second one, and they seem very happy together. They’re easy to look after – just give them some food and watch them swim!

Speaker D: We’ve got a really cool parrot named Polly. Polly’s a great character, and she talks! What better pet could you have, right? Sadly, though, Polly wasn’t feeling well a few weeks ago. She stopped eating and wasn’t talking so much. Everyone who owns a pet must look after it, so we had to take her to a vet, who prescribed some medicine. She’s much improved now and back to her usual chatty self!

Speaker E: Our local pet shop has got lots of different pets – rabbits and hamsters, birds and fish. I’m always tempted to buy another pet, but I know I mustn’t! But every time I go there, I pick up something for my dog, Gus. He loves having a new toy to chew on or chase round the house. I think about myself, you know. I love video games, but I can’t play the same one over and over again!

Speaker F: When we were thinking of getting a pet, we had to consider where we would get one. The pet shop near my house has lots to choose from. But I get so sad when I think about all those animals that are out on the streets. So my parents and I decided that we would visit the city shelter and rescue a pet from there. And that’s how we got our dog Chester, who’s more than happy to live with us!

Jason: Vicky, are you going to Helens fancy dress party on Saturday? You have to come, if only to see my outfit. I’m going as a gorilla rugby player!

Vicky: That’ll be hilarious, Jason! I wasn’t sure if I was going to come, but I think you’ve helped me make up my mind. But I don’t know what to wear. I was thinking maybe a princess, but that seems a bit boring.

Jason: No, that sounds great. If you came as a princess, you would wear loads of jewellery and a huge crown, right?

Vicky: Hmm, I’m not keen on that idea, really. Where would I get all those things? I don’t want to spend a thousand pounds on an outfit.

Jason: That’s a good point. Well, what about a celebrity? Maybe you could come as Lady Gaga. That should be easy to do, shouldn’t it? Just copy one of her looks.

Vicky: No, I can’t do that. Lisa’s already going as Gaga. Besides, I think I’m way too tall to be her. She’d only come up to my chin if she were standing in front of me!

Jason: What about a mermaid? You know, dress up like a fish! I think you’d look really good in that kind of outfit, and it can’t be that expensive, can it?

Vicky: That sounds interesting, but how would I get round the party without falling over? It would be quite difficult to walk!

Jason: Hmm, maybe you could wear a long green skirt and ask your mum to sew a fish tail on the bottom.

Vicky: How creative! I’ve also got a funky green blouse and I can put some fake seashells all over it. I think we’re getting somewhere with this idea! Of course, I’ve got an exam in three days, so I can’t spend all my time making a mermaid costume.

Jason: Hopefully it won’t take too long to make.
The party’s this weekend and today’s Monday. That’s plenty of time, don’t you think?

Vicky: Well, my exams in maths, which I’m terrible at. I think I’ll have to wait until it’s over before I can do this costume. But at least I’ve got the idea.

Jason: Well, good luck in your exam, and with the costume!

Vicky: Thanks. See you at the party Jason!

Presenter: Hi everyone and welcome to our programme, Awesome Job! Today we have John Stone with us to talk about his work in ecotourism. John, welcome to the show.

Speaker: Thanks for having me.

Presenter: Tell us some things about your job and what your company does.

Speaker: I work as a tour guide for a company called Go Green Tourism. We specialise in tours to unique habitats with rich biodiversity. We organise very small tours, for maybe 20 people or less, so that the environment remains protected, and our destinations are mainly tropical regions in South America and most recently South-East Asia. We travel to our destination and stay at a local village near the habitat, which is where we eat and sleep. Then we go on a guided walking tour of a rainforest and we educate our travelling companions about the different flora and fauna of the area.

Presenter: So you have to be well-trained in plant and animal sciences to give one of these tours, yes?

Speaker: That’s right. Typically the tour guides have a degree in biology or botany, or a master’s in forest conservation, something like that. My specific educational background is in zoo management, but I saw an advert for this job and decided I wanted to give it a try. I’ve learned a great deal more about the natural environment through this work, which I’m happy about.

Presenter: Is ecotourism safe for the environment, in your opinion?

Speaker: We do our very best to ensure that any place we visit is left virtually untouched. Our ecotravellers must attend a seminar before we embark on our journey in order to learn the dos and don’ts of the trip. People who sign up for these tours are quite conscious of the environment to begin with.

Presenter: Does your company participate in environment protection programmes?

Speaker: I’m glad you asked that, because yes, we do. Part of our profits go to awareness programmes aimed at educating people about the rainforests and their value as a resource. Most people don’t realise that without rainforests, we wouldn’t be able to survive.

Presenter: There is also the problem of rainforests being cut down, isn’t there?

Speaker: Yes, we also provide funds for organisations that fight illegal logging and land clearing in Brazil. These organisations work with the Brazilian government and although it’s a continuous battle, they have made progress in recent years in protecting land.

Presenter: That’s good to know. What sorts of things do people get to see in the rainforests, besides plants and animals of course?

Speaker: Oh, many things. We visit dazzling waterfalls, and pristine lakes and rivers. We also visit the native peoples who live in or near the rainforests – the ones who are welcoming to visitors anyway! So there is also a cultural exchange that takes place between the ecotravellers and the locals. I’ve even picked up a few words of the locals’ languages, which is really cool. Of course, I’m a long way off being fluent!

Presenter: And do you just visit rainforests?

Speaker: Well, the company is only about eight years old, so the focus has been rainforest regions mainly in Brazil, but as I said before, we do visit South-East Asia, which we started doing a couple of years ago. But I’m excited to say that we are planning to expand our operations to regions in Africa, such as the Serengeti and Madagascar. Business has been booming for ecotourism, so hopefully that trend will continue, for us and for other environmentally-conscious organisations…

Text 39C. Looking After the Environment
Part II
Although Britain is densely populated, it still has large areas of open countryside, including National Parks, areas of outstanding natural
beauty and Royal Parks. Many special sites are protected because they are of architectural or historical value, for example Stonehendge. In
addition to the Government’s Department of the Environment there are a number of voluntary organizations which are involved in protecting
buildings and the countryside.
Over the last twenty years there have been changes in patterns of agriculture and urban development. Traditional heavy industries such as
iron and steel have declined and inner-city areas have declined with them. At the same time, new towns have been built and the pressure on
the countryside from roads and houses has increased. People have moved away from the big cities and there has been a battle to keep parts
of the «Green Belt» from development.
Changes in agriculture have meant bigger farms with bigger fields, with less room for plants and wildlife in hedges, and an increased danger
of soil erosion in some areas. Mineral workings, intensive forestry and the use of nitrates in fertilizers, as well as the general increase in the
amount of pesticides, have created concern for the future. In some ways, Britain is a less polluted country than it was thirty years ago. Coal burning is strictly controlled in areas like London, which no longer suffers the poisonous smogs that killed people in the 1950s.
Attempts have been made to landscape areas of wasteland, to repair and restore the old canals and to clean up Britain’s rivers. But despite these efforts various serious threats to the environment remain: acid rain caused partly by sulphur emissions from power stations, the rise in the number of cars and lorries on the roads, the pullution of the sea, the destruction of old buildings and the spread of housing. There is
continuing debate on the safety of nuclear power stations and the possibility of alternative sources of energy.

Environmental Protection

B11

Nowadays more and more people are worried about our environment. Journalists discuss these problems on the pages of their newspapers. Scientists hold special conferences in order to find a solution and make the right decision how to help our planet.

DECIDE

B12

If we want to continue living happily on our planet, we should understand the importance of environmental protection.

IMPORTANT

B13

First of all, we ought to find an opportunity to reduce the amount of air pollution and build special water treatment facilities.

TREAT

B14

We must also stop unlawful killing of birds and animals and we should not destroy their natural habitats in order to build homes or to make farmlands.

  LAWFUL

B15

Finally, we must ensure the safety of nuclear power plants as nuclear accidents have disastrous consequences.

DISASTER

B16

If we do not take any action now, the life on our planet may end tragically.
