Snowboarding
Snowboarding is one of the most impressive sports. It is very interesting to watch this competition even on TV. Pretty often when sportsmen snowboard down the snowy hill avoiding all the obstacles and doing tricks it takes spectators’ breath away.
Snowboard as a means of transport along the snowy hills was invented not so long ago. The prototype was created by an American named Sherman Poppen in 1965. Back then it was a simple children’s toy and looked like 2 skis glued together. Nowadays it is a complicated high-tech construction and every part of it has its own purpose. That’s why different boards are used for different kinds of snowboarding.
Besides, snowboarder’s uniform consists of special boots with hooks and protection, a helmet, special shorts, knee-caps and elbow-pieces. The protection is very important for snowboarders because snowboard is a traumatic sport. Especially the kind called halfpipe when sportsmen do tricks using a special track that looks like a half of the pipe with walls 7 meters high.
There are six official kinds of snowboarding and they are included in the Olympic Games and other international competitions. However, sportsmen invent new ways to snowboard every day and snowboard fans are able to find interesting videos that they will enjoy watching and at the same time they can learn something that will help them to conquer the mountains.

Snowboarding is a popular sport and one of the favorite winter activities for people of all ages. The point of this sport is to descend from the snow-covered slope or mountain on a special board – a snowboard.

Snowboarding is a young sport, it is not yet 100 years old. It was invented by a simple American man, Sherman Poppen, in the 60s. The «parent» of the modern snowboard was made from two connected skis. Deviser named his invention «snurfer». The rider had to hold on to a special rope tied to the nose of the device. The reason was there were no bindings on the board.

Snowboarding is also an Olympic winter sport, and was added to the program in 1998. Canadian man Ross Rebagliati became the first Olympic champion in snowboarding. Women’s first Olympic champion was the French woman Karine Ryuby.

Many people prefer to spend their winter holidays or weekends riding on boards. There are trails for both beginners and professionals on specially equipped slopes. People come with their personal equipment or rent it at the ski resort. After such extreme activity, vacationers like to sit in a cozy cafe, drinking tea, coffee or mulled wine.

In Russia, the snowboarding season usually starts in December and ends in April. The most popular Russian resorts are «Dombay» and «Rosa Khutor» in the European part of the country. «Sheregesh» in Siberia. And «Gorny vozduh» on Sakhalin.

As for me, I cannot ride on the board and never wanted to learn. It is a traumatic and uninteresting sport for me.

Snowboarding is the fastest growing winter sport and is set to become even more popular than skiing. It is hard to say who actually «invented» the first snowboard because it was influenced by many different people including Sherman Poppen, Demetrije Milovich, Tom Sims and Jake Burton Carpenter. Snowboarding’s roots, however, may be traced back to the early 1920’s. Then children in Vermont built what would now be considered makeshift snowboards out of barrel staves and rode them sideways down a snowy hill.

Later, there were some people, who built snowboard like sleds. One of them was M.J. «Jack» Burchett. He cut out a plank of plywood in 1929 and tried to secure his feet with some clothesline and horse reins. Burchett came up with on of the first «snowboards».Another snowboard inventor is Sherman Poppen. In 1965 Poppen, a chemical gases engineer in Muskegon, Michigan, invented «The Snurfer» (a mix between the two words «snow» and «surfer») as a toy for his daughter. He made the Snurfer by strapping two skis together and attaching a rope to the front tip of the snurfer, so the rider could hold it and keep it more stable. Many of his daughters friends wanted one of those new Snurfers, and soon Poppen lincensed his new idea to a manufacturer.

Short after that Jake Burton Carpenter (a today’s most popular snowboard factory «Burton Snowboards) used ski technology in snowboards. In 1977, at the age of 23, Jake Burton founded his own company in Londonderry, Vermont, and experimented continually with new materials and designs. Eventually, he was building a snowboard made of steam-bent wood and fiberglass, with high-back bindings and metal edges.

Another snowboard manufacturing pioneer is the former skateboard champion Tom Sims. Back in 1963, as an eighth-grader, Sims made a snowboard out of plywood in his shop class. He called it a «skiboard». After years of improvements, he opened Sims Snowboards in 1977 and with the help of his friend and employee Chuck Barfoot started making snowboards. Barfoot, who actually made the snowboards, came up with the «Flying Yellow Banana».

Snowboarding continued to increase in popularity over the next years but for a long time, snowboarders were seen as society’s outcasts. Ski resorts banned them and the upper-middle-class ski community looked down upon them. In 1985 snowboarding was only allowed in 7% of U. S. ski areas and story was much the same in Europe. As equipment and skill levels improved, though, snowboarding gradually became more acceptable. Most of the major ski areas had separate slopes for snowboarders by 1990. Now, about 97% of all ski areas in North America and Europe allow snowboarding and more than half of them have ramps and pipes. The number of snowboarders increased from about 2 million in 1990 to more than 7 million in 2000. It is predicted that the snowboarders will outnumber skiers by 2015.

Snowboarding is the fastest-growing winter sport. It’s catching on all over the world and is now included in the Olympic Games. Did we say sport? Snowboarding is also a way of life, with its own equipment, style, music, clothing and even language.

The «father» of snowboarding is Jake Burton. He became hooked on the idea when he was a teenager and took 15 years to develop the perfect snowboard. Now he owns the largest snowboard business in the world. Snowboarding is different from skiing. «The only thing skiing has in common with snowboarding is the snow,» says one snowboarding fan. A snowboard looks like a big skateboard without wheels. While standing up with both feet on a board, a snowboarder slides down a slope, controlling the direction with the same small movements that a skateboarder uses. The most difficult thing is, of course, to keep balance. Skiers, however, aren’t happy about the latest craze. They say that snowboards ruin the surface of the snow, and snowboarders can be intimidating as they fly down hills at amazing speeds. Besides, their baggy trousers, baseball caps, bright shirts and Walkmans playing Hip Hop music are not what traditional, conservative skiers are used to. But snowboarders will give you a long list of reasons why snowboarding is better than skiing. Snowboarding is especially popular with teenagers and college students (some say as many as 90% of snowboarders is between the ages 10 and 25). «Skiing is for old people,» says a student from Colorado.

«Snowboarding is for the young. You can go crazy when you snowboard and that’s cool.» (from Speak Out, abridged)
