Giraffes are found in the dry savannahs of Africa, where they roam among the open plains and woodlands.

Giraffes are the world’s tallest mammals, thanks to their towering legs and long necks. An adult male can grow to around 5.5m – that’s taller than three adult humans!

Giraffes have beautiful spotted coats. While no two individuals have exactly the same pattern, giraffes from the same area appear similar.

These animals don’t need to sleep so much — only 5 or 30 minutes of sleep in a 24 hours. This period of sleep is enough to feel quite oneself for the animal. Traditionally it was considered that the giraffe didn’t make any sounds, but nowadays this is known to be untrue. Actually, these mammals could hiss, snort as well as make flute-like sounds. They also communicate by low pitch noises, which humans can’t hear.

These animals are friendly, sociable, and peaceful, that’s why they fight and show aggression rarely. Sometimes males hit each other necks and perform a behavior called ‘necking’. Although it usually lasts no more than a couple of minutes.
